A 4WD prototype Ferrari spotted (by CAR Mag.) on the back of a trailer
some years ago (when the 348GT% was being tested).

This car (name / number unknown) was though to be powered by the 2.8L
twin turbo engine from the 288 GTO had a front which looked like a NSX
and a rear like a 308. It was much shorter that a 3%8 but about the
    same width.

.2 A 4WD prototype Ferrari spotted (by CAR Mag.) on the back of a trailer

Do you mean the 408 ? of which 2 prototypes were built (1 yellow, 1
red). The 408 was never intended to become a road Ferrari (they hate
4WD) it was more a design exercise for Mauro Forghieri's newly created
Ferrari Engineering. Besides 4WD the 408 had a 4litre V8 and most of
the protos were built of plastic, carbon/kevlar compounds, etc ... The
only thing that might appear some day is the 408 engine.

It could well have been a 408, the article which described it was very
short but now you mention it it did state Kevlar (49?) construction and
could well have been 4litre V8. The car was red - do they do other
    colours :-)

This car is my favourate looking Ferrari - including the 288GTO and
    250LM.

Isn't 4 litres a bit too big for a V8 ? I thought you wandered out of some
    ``ideal'' envelope at 3.6L or so ?

It depends on which side of the Atlantic you are ... 8-) I remember
some 289 or 427 engines. Now don't tell me about the 302.

My preferred capacity is 250cc per cylinder ...

The Callaway Corvette is a petty mean beast with 5.7 Litre V8 Twin
Turbo ZR-1 engine (standard ZR-1 engine produces 380+BHP) and a Top
    speed of 254MPH.

    How about Cadillac's ~500cid V8s in the good ol' '70s? Isn't that
    something like 8 litres? ;^)

Yes That is 8.2 Litres as fitted to the Cadilac Eldorado the biggest
production car engine in the world & it only produced around 400BHP.

RE: .11

Yes, and it got about 5 miles/(U.S.) gallon. You needed an engine like that
to pull a tank like the old Caddie Eldorado around the road.

Here is a pretty wicked one-off special

The Dodge M45 built by the Dodge division of Chrysler Corporation and
PPG. It was a one off Pro Car Indy Car World Series.

It is powered by the 2.2Litre Dodge engine with a 16-Value Cosworth
cylinder head and Twin Garret T25 Turbochargers and it produces 440BHP &
has a top speed of 200MPH.
