1630.0. "State of the S/H Market?" by EVTPUB::ANDERS (Steve Anders, Evry, France.) Mon Dec 16 1991 11:22

Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a second-hand Saab here in France, and I'm trying to get an
idea on the price and general state of the market vs. UK.

Any comments on how the S/H market is at present over there? Down or very
down, or just slow?

Also, if anybody could post the current UK guide prices for a:-

_Saab 900i 16valve, born July 89, 90 model yr. and ~50 thou miles_

I would be very grateful.

Steve.

    Steve,

Although both the new and second hand market is currently experiencing
significant downturns, the second hand market is in far better shape.
Large luxury cars are currently being sold off at lower than trade
    prices!

A Saab 900 16v on an 89/90 plate (50k miles) will be sold for
approximately 6300 pounds sterling. The dealers will ask more, but I
recently got 1000 pounds off the second hand price of the Audi Coupe I
currently own; just by letting the dealer sweat it out for a week or
so, and then waving the cash in front of him.

    Steve,

The market is so depressed (thousands of cars for sale in the mags,
shops, etc) that you can target at least 25% below official (ARGUS)
price. They will be very glad to even fill the tank.

    Cheers
1630.3What about deals at the Auctions?UKCSSE::ARBISERIf you want it done well - DIYTue Dec 24 1991 11:4312

Has anybody taken advantage of these lower prices at any car auctions
    recently?

I'm about to do a survey with my next door neighbour starting at
Blackbush, come the new year. Has anyone out there actually bought
their car this way, and if so was it significantly below the current
    depressed prices??

I caught a bit of a Top Gear programme which discussed car auctions. It
seemed that common sense was the main thing required at these things.
Examining the car before-hand, not going over your allowance, and
giving the car a good test-drive in the hour after the sale.

1630.5Some prices ...CHEFS::OSBORNECThu Jan 02 1992 16:4924

Went to Blackbushe on Dec 27.

Some good prices for cars I was interested in eg :-

Citroen XM 2.0i on an 'H' plate, 17k miles, immac 7.7k

XJS 3.9 'F', 44k miles, 1 private owner, all docs, absolutely right
    10.2k

    Audi 100 2.2 Avant,'F', 60k miles, clean, 5.2k

Noted several others, but can't find the listing. I'll post some more
    if it turns up......

Average throughput in each hall, 60 cars an hour. About 400 cars
processed -- quiet, as it was after Boxing Day. About 500 bidders, to
judge by the car park -- may have been more gawkers than usual, as
private punters there in force. Some were so innocent they didn't
    even have last month's Glass's.........
