1564.0. "Spridget graveyards?" by TLE::LEGERLOTZ (When I want your opinion I'll ask for it.) Tue Oct 08 1991 16:56

I will be travelling in England during the latter part of November and was
thinking of trying to track down some parts for my '74 Midget.

Does anyone out there know of any good junk yards (that would have lots of
Spridget parts) in the area between the Reading/Basingstoke area and Plymouth?

I realize that most everything can be had through catalogues and mail order
houses, but I might be able to save some money this way, as well as having the
fun(?) of picking through the junk yard for the parts that I want/need.

Thanks!
Al Legerlotz

    Hi Al,

Its a little bit out of the way from reading /Basingstoke, but
Richardsons (in Stains about 35 miles east of Reading) is a soley MG
    scrap yard.

There is tons of stuff there.

They also do average to good rebuilds .. and you can drool over some T
type midgets they have got there.

You can normally phone them before going there and asking about the
availability of parts, if there are certain things you want, otherwise
    just rummage around the wrecks.

Note of advice. Take some old shoes and dirty clothes.

If it sounds like the place you want to get to I can post the address
    and telephone number.

    Steve (67 midget nearing completion!)

Please do post the address and phone number. I'll make sure to bring the
appropriate attire for the scrap yard. I'm sure that AVIS won't mind me
throwing a few dirty bits into the boot of the car I hire 8^)

1564.3Try this too if you have time.NEWOA::SAXBYAye. When I were a lad....Wed Oct 09 1991 12:5412

    Al,

Staines (it just seems like it should be spelt STAINS!) is easily
reached from Reading via the M4. While you're rummaging around the
M4 area, there is a scrapyard at the end of the A329M at Bracknell
which, a few months ago, had quite a few MGs, amongst other cars
(many MG parts are found on other BL products of the same era).

    Happy hunting!

I looked at the map. StainEs is very close to Heathrow, so I'll be in that area
anyway.

Bracknell looks to be relatively close, too.

My girlfriend can't believe that I'm going to spent time on Holiday looking
through Junkyards! On the other hand, I can't understand why she spends most
of her time on holiday looking through shops.. 8^)

There is an MG centre just outside Reading at a place called Beech
Hill. I can't remember the name just now but I'll look it up when I
next pass. They concentrate on rebuilding MGBs, MGCs and Spridgets
presumably using a mix of old and new parts (even new body shells are
now available - but I guess that one of those couldn't be described as
hand baggage). They might be worth a 'phone call.

I'll get the name and number

1564.6Keep 'em coming, I've still got a couple of weeks before I go.TLE::LEGERLOTZWhen I want your opinion I'll ask for it.Wed Oct 16 1991 17:3712
Thanks. I would appreciate the name of the place.

A new Body shell is not necessary and is a *bit* out of the budget that
I've set aside for MG bits on this trip.

I may go for some things that aren't quite hand baggage and have them
either shipped, or put them in their own box and "check" them through
    on the ride home.

    Cheers,

    Richardson's Address is Moor Lane,
    			    Staines (sp?)

Telephone number is on the way.

Beach Hill Graage (or MG Spares and Services) is about 8 miles from
    DECpark in Reading.

Their tel number is: 0734 884774 (the spares number)

They sell just about anything, but it might be worth giving them a ring
before you come over so they can order stuff in.

    They also ship stuff international!

Steve (Richardsons number in the pipeline!)

Well, I leave for my trip in a couple of hours.

Thanks for the replies. I'll let you know if I get to any of these places and
find any good junk.

Cheers,

This really would be better placed in another note, but since I started the
conversation here, I figure I should follow up here.

I never did get to any of the scrapyards mentioned when I was over. The weather
was too crappy, and I was too tired to go trudging through acres of rusty wrecks.

What I did instead was go to MG shops. I went to a place in Beech Hill (near
DecPark) which was recommended to me by Steve Freer. They had some good stuff,
and I got some pricing information from them.

On the one weekday that I had off, I went to Brown and Gammons (in Baldock up
the A1 from the M25) to look at interior pieces. The next thing I knew, the
credit card was on the counter, and I was buying...

an interior pannel kit,
carpet kit,
seat covers,
headrests,
shift boot gator,
door pulls,
door seals.

The quality seemed to be top notch, and the price was 1/2 to 2/3 of what I'd have
to pay from a catalogue place here.

Thanks for all of your replies - now all I have to do is to restore the car! 8^)
