| Can't say I noticed Nige being called English except when mention was
made of the new English record - this is an English record for number
of GP wins, not British.
Maybe we should be called Europeans? Definately for EF91 now!

| Mansell broke Moss' English record for number of wins. However a certain well
known Scot has about 10 more wins, so Mansell has a long way to go to get the
British record.
I suspect most Europeans could care less about sub-national records like Moss'

| This is a very old debate...
Sports commentators always do this, almost subconsciously:
English person does well -> (English) commentator says "English"
English person does badly -> commentator says "British"
Scottish/Welsh/NI person does well -> commentator says "British"
Scottish/Welsh/NI person does badly -> commentator says "Scottish/Welsh/NI"
Not fair really...

Being a British citizen, of Scottish nationality, I would love to
see Nigel Mansel "or any Brit", break Jackie Stewarts record for grand
prix wins. Somehow though, I don't think think that old Nigel has the
ability to do it, which is another reason for the English commentators
NOT to put him up on a pedestal too quickly...only to be shot down
again!
As far as I am concerned, he is not in the same class as Stewart, Hill,
Clark and the likes, who's driving abilities helped to shape the world of
grand prix driving. To state facts like" the best English driver" only
belittles Nigel Mansels, and the true great Brits, influence on the British
and world grand prix racing arena.
Yes he is good, but there is a long way from being good to great!!

for making "history", it all depends on your definition of history, does it
not?
My budgie lived for 17 years, possibly it too made "history".

Re .14 and before
Why make so much fuss about this? Mansell, an Englishman, broke
an English record. He didn't break the Scottish record, nor did
he break the British record.
In other sports, like athletics, there are English, Scottish,
Welsh AND British records so why not in Motor Racing too?

I presume you would be happier if he was the traditional 'it's not the
winning but the taking part' type of Englishman wouldn't you.
It's that sort of attitude which first of all led to the decline of the
Empire, and a steady deterioration in Britains standing in the world
during the 50's, 60's and 70's. The attitude of 'someone else can do
it', 'Jobsworth' etc.

I used to share a house with a Scotsman for 2 years (in the early 70s)
and he made this same observation.
So, we conducted a sort of survey when watching the box for the number
of times any individual or event was (to our knowledge) misrepresented
with regard their/its nationality. This would include the
Scots/English/British thing as well as any others we noticed such as
Canadian/American, Indian/Pakistani, US/English etc.
The only conclusion we came to was that Scotsmen are no more
misrepresented than anyone else. A good example was Pop Groups. Most
non-English speakers used to (and probably still do) think that people
like the Hollies, Who, Herman's Hermits etc were American. In fact I
have known such people think that the Beatles were the ONLY pop group
of the 60s to come out of Britain!
Closer to the conference topic. The other point Scotsmen used to make
was concerning the comparison of roads (the fact that the M6 stopped at
Carlisle). True, but in 1972 I could drive from Ayr to Stirling on dual
carriageway for 90% of the way. I could not identify anywhere in
England where (that wasn't served by motorways, and remember there
wasn't many motorways then!) that you drive a similar distance on such
good roads.

| On an interesting rambling aside - I've noticed a really wierd sort of
inverted snobbery about living and driving in the South-East. I
sometimes find myself boasting about things which we really should be
ashemed off. For example, on returning home to Edinburgh;
"Call that a traffic jam?! Why, if I don't get on the M25 before 7AM I
might as well just give up and go home. It has millions of lanes, you
know ... None of this 4-lane motorway nonsense. What do you mean, you
don't need more?"
So that proggie on telly last night about Jumbo jets and concorde? I
must admit, its pretty impressive sight when driving along the M4 and
Concorde flies over. Perhaps that should be in the Seen in Passing
note?
Which reminds me, I've always wondered. If Concorde is flying away from
you, at Supersonic speed, does that mean you can't hear it ....

| Yep, Concorde is not allowed to go supersonic over land.
There was a small article in the paper on Monday which described
a 'DIY supersonic plane' for about 150,000.
This basically consisted of a jet engine, with wings and a pair
of seats connected to it. The all-up weight was designed so that
it can be flown on a Private Pilots License.
In the article it did state that it is against flying regulations
to travel overland at supersonic speeds. That will also apply to Concorde.

Just open your mouth wide !!!
Actually, there is a body and a canopy. The nose is not dissimilar
to a Hawk (ala Red Arrows) and the wings/tailplanes look like the
Eagle, I think (the Top Gun plane ?).
I can't spare 150 grand, but if you get together a dozen people
(who haven't just bought new houses and/or cars) then maybe it
would be reasonable - just as long as your aren't last in line
to fly the thing...
