1484.0. "Proton ?" by KIRKTN::PDUNN () Fri Jun 28 1991 14:06

Anyone got any experience of the Proton ? - a 6 year parts
and corrosion warranty, and a reasonable price for a high
spec makes it *appear* good value !

My father bought one about a 1-1.5 years ago, he's got the 1.5
    Aeroback.

It's got all the gadgets fitted if you like that sort of thing eg:
electrically operated wing mirrors. Head room a bit low when driving.
Also it's performance is not brilliant but a dirve a Turbo so can't
    really comment.

I found it a bit plasticky, mind you the cassette/radio is pretty good.

Apparently they're neither good nor bad, just bland.

What has set Proton apart from other manufacturers is that
they have always competed on price, a concept totally
alien to the trade as a whole.

They now seem to be creating a dealer network and whilst
this will improve acceptability to the public may also
	push up prices too.

I remember looking at one parked just down the road from my mates' place just
after they came out. It looked OK, and I can imagine that the Stereo would be
good, as in the one I saw, it was a Blaupunkt.
As I remember we spent most of the rest of the day trying to work out what
exactly it was/ were it came from. Never did get it right !!!!!!

Apparantly, when first introduced, a manager from one of the 'majors'
stated that it was as well, if not better built, than some of their
    range.

Remember, Malaysian labour unit costs are bound to be low, and with a
Mitsubishi drive unit, can't be too bad.

1484.5Proton update?WOTVAX::LIVINGSTONEPSurvive! get a little crazy...Mon Jan 24 1994 13:348
Any update on the Proton range?
With the changes in the car scheme and car tax it may be worth
    considering.
Recent adverts price the 1.6SEi (16v) at approx 11,000 pounds with lots of
extras and some nice standard features.
I've never driven one, but would appreciate any feedback/comments.
    Thanks,
    		Phil.

Obviously not much activity in the Proton note.
    Does this mean something? :-(

I don't know much about Protons but did consider them a few months back when
looking for a replacement second car. I obtained literature direct from Proton
and then visited a dealer in Reading. It took me two minutes of looking at one
of their flagship models to decide I'd never buy one of these. They are badly
designed, cheap, nasty cars.

The new model is very different from the old ones.
It looks MUCH better, and it drives like a 20th century car.

    Not bad value either.
