1339.0. "Road re-numbering" by SIEVAX::CORNE (Sometimes you get the Elevator, sometimes the Shaft) Mon Jan 14 1991 08:30

I heard on the radio this morning that many roads in Oxfordshire change number,
starting from today. This is to coincide (well, close, only two days out!)
with the new M40 extension opening. Not just one or two roads, but quite a
long list. Radio announcer joked that it was done to coincide with the
opening of a bottle of whisky rather than a new motorway....

So now my brand new atlas, which marks the M40 as open (well, someone moved the
dates after the book went to be printed) is now out of date. I wonder if
DOT would consider giving me a refund - somehow I doubt it.

Is there a need to change road numbers that have been that way for years?

Road re-numbering causes a lot of confusion. The road between M3/J5
and Spencers Wood etc became the B3349 before I arrived on the scene in
1985, yet some (most?, all?) road atlases still refer to it as the A32.

Renumbering makes sense if a new road has been built so the existing road takes
a back seat. In the example in .1 the DOT want less drivers to use the old road
and this is more likely if its called the B3349 and sounds like its some
godforsaken little byway than if its still called the A32. Drivers will use the
wonderful shiny new A32 instead.

I do agree though that they sometimes go crazy on renumbering and do it for no
readily apparent reason.

I agree in principle, but in this specific instance, there is no shiny
new A32. Whereas the A32 used to go all the way from Petersfield up
to Reading, crossing the M3 at junction 5, it now ends at junction 5,
where you start running along the B3349. I'm sure there was a jolly
good reason for it at the time, but it doesn't spring to mind.

Re .prev

OK, sorry, I guess it falls into my second category then - the DOT went crazy.

The A32 was renumbered the B3349 because megabucks were spent on improving
the A339 between Basingstoke and Alton. The powers that be want all the
traffic to take the A33 from Reading to Basingstoke, then the A339 to
Alton. The B3349 has a number of sharp bends and is narrow in places.

This blithely ignores the fact that the "new" route is 26 miles (from M4
J11 to Alton) compared with 22 miles for the "old" route. I always use the
"old" route when travelling that way. Unless you drive illegally you will
not save any time by driving the "new" way (it may even take longer).

Anyone know any details on the road-works alongside the A325,
which I presume to be an extension of the A3 north-bound,
    incorporating a by-pass of Petersfield ?

When that is complete, I expect it to be renumbered too.

The latest road atlas I checked shows the bit of A32 between
Odiham and Alton has been B-numbered too !!
