I have a renault 11 txe and recently in wet weather it has been miss -firing for a while(after about ten miles)then about five miles later it misfires again then loses power and stops.If i let the car sit for about 1-2 mins it starts again and drives as before. I have new plugs leads etc and have given the ignition a good spraying with the usual moisture dispersant/ignition sealer.I feel sure that moisture is getting to it somehow but it sure is bugging me. Can somebody please help me before i go insane,i got stuck at the bridge tolls this morning....very embarassing(sp) Thanks in advance Tom ....SQF.

Longish shot... I had an '81 5TL, which I believe has the same contact breaker as the 11. This thing came as a cassette ( 7 a piece!) - you could adjust it quickly with an Allen key. I found that the lug on the cassette (some sort of bakerlite) used to wear down in no time, unless it was really well greased. This changed the timing considerably - although you could quickly get it back using the aforementioned Allen key with a dwell angle meter - you may have the same problem. Cheers Steve
1323.2 | Distributor probs... | KERNEL::BAYLISD | Thu Dec 20 1990 17:57 | 19
< Distributor Probs...> Check out the distributor cap. I know of somebody who had a very similar problem and the culprit was a broken carbon contact that sits at the top of the distributor cap. Replacing the cap solved the problem. Also check out the inside of the cap for any sign of cracks or 'arcing' (sparking between the four contact points). Anything like this is bad. You could also check out the coil. have a look under the bonnet when its dark to see if you can see any sparks flying around. (Watch fingers if you start poking things.) Good luck... Dave

The other problem that I used to have with the R5 was a naffed condenser, which caused coughing and bad starting. They're cheap as well... Steve

1323.5 | Clean the earth connection | GWYNED::BURTON | Wed Jan 02 1991 14:08 | 17
I own a Renault R11 and mine has electronic ingnition, doesn't yours? That should eliminate bad points and condensor. I would suggest that you clean the earth connection to the engine. Just follow the negative battery cable to the point where it connects to the engine block. On the 1.4 litre, it is between the engine and the firewall. I don't know where it is on the 1.7 litre. For the 1.4, put the car on ramps or stands, remove the splash shield from below the engine, and slide up under the driver's side from the front. The earth connection should be visible just above the steering rack. Remove the bolt, wire brush the contacts and the block real well, wipe everything clean, and reassemble with grease. Do the same to the battery connections. Even though nothing will look corroded, the car will run considerably better after performing the service. It may be that yours is corroded badly and increases in resistance during damp weather just enough to cause problems. Jim |
