1322.0. "New SAAB Turbo?" by EVTPUB::ANDERS () Wed Dec 19 1990 12:23

This morning's Independent carries an advert for a new Saab 900S. Says it has a
new tech called a light pressure turbo. Power output between the injection
models and the std turbo's.

Anyone know what this is? Does it overcome the dreaded turbo lag? Is it little
more than a marketing ploy for cheaper turbo? Is it a 16Valve job?

Steve - (Saab 900 driver).

Does this mean one with a very low boost pressure ?

In which case, the engine can be designed with higher compression
ratio regardless of boost, so avoiding pre-ignition problems.

One way of claiming to have a turbo, without getting any real
power increase of note. (The other way is to buy the sticker !)

It would still have the 'turbo advantage' of higher overall power
figures, possibly at lower (than 16V) revs, but still providing
more acceptable mpg figures (consumption only higher when 'on boost').

Of course, I could be (and probably am) completely wrong as I have
not seen the advert and could be (will be ?) accused of
talking out of my a***e ...

The new version is designed to replace the "S" version. Seems to be a
halfway house between the "normal" Turbo and the normally aspirated
car. Lower boost pressure, don't know whether lag has been done away
with...... no doubt price will be higher than the normally aspirated
    car.

I read somewhere that all SAAbs were going 16 valve.... true? or false?
