1221.0. "Small car suggestions - impossible criteria!" by VOGON::DAWSON (Turn ignition on - Turn brain off!) Thu Sep 13 1990 09:18

I currently drive a BX turbo diesel estate (on the lease scheme)
which comes up for renewal in Jamuary. My wife drives a Skoda (really
cheap motoring for three years!). I know this is pie in the sky but
what I really want to do is buy the BX as the family car (and for the
wife to drive day to day) and get a small car on the lease just for me
to potter to and from work (40 miles each way) which has about the same
performance as the BX turbo while, ideally, allowing me to fund the
purchase of the BX simply by reduced lease cost! (or at least, not end
up paying out too much more overall for the loan and the new lease cost
than I pay today for the BX lease).

Now I have had good experiences with my two diesels and so I am
thinking along those lines again. However, the two main considerations
are cost and economy. I have considered the AX diesel but it's a bit
underpowered! The AX GT seems nice. A Pug 205 diesel sounds OK but not
    sure about the price.

Has the panel got any sensible suggestions?

1221.1Rover Metro?SAC::DELANY_SThu Sep 13 1990 10:0210
    Colin,

How about one of the new Rover Metros? Their ride and handling have
been described by car mags as going "straight to the top of the class",
even including such benchmarks as the 205, and their build quality is
supposed to be A1, as per new Rover 200 series.

    Hi Colin,

I bet you were wondering whether I was still around :-)

How about a Ford Fiesta 1.8D ? You just said in another note that you
were quite impressed with the performance of the engine... There are
quite a lot of those little things over here and they really seem to go
quite well. Note that the figures Ford quotes for the 1.8D engine are
very similar to the ones given by Peugeot for the 205's. All in all,
it sounds to me like a better deal: better build quality and trim,
    lower price tag...

1221.3I'd recommend a Nova any day for a "small" car !OVAL::ALFORDJIce a specialityFri Sep 14 1990 16:0312
I put in the original "small/cheap lease car" note...

I eventually went for the Vauxhall Nova GTE

the SRi was almost as good, just a couple of extra bits came as standard on the
GTE, plus slightly better accelleration...

Lovely car, great fun, handles beautifully....and has changed a few "stick in
the mud" sierra drivers' mind about Novas being "slow" :-)

Mind you, I think I'll go for the Astra GTE next time.....even more fun !!!

Thanks for the responses guys. I have the Fiesta D on my comparisons
list, Ben, although I haven't driven one. I just have a funny feeling about
    Fords...

I also have the Nova on my list to test drive as well as the Pug 205.
Drove a Toyota Corolla last week (very nippy for a 1.3 and superb
roadholding but top of my personal price range) and was very impressed.
Looked at Polos but seem very overpriced and underpowered compared to
anything else I've seen so far.

I need to get a Saturday free of kids and things and go test driving!

    Thanks so far,

    	Colin
