1214.0. "Retrofitting to lease cars" by NEARLY::GOODENOUGH () Wed Sep 05 1990 17:41

    Does anyone know how much it would cost to retrofit a tow bar and
    electrics to a lease car? What would be position at the end of lease?

    Thanks,
    Jeff.

    I did this to my Sierra Estate. Cost was about 120.

    At the end of the lease it was still in position at the back of the car
    (-:

    Well, actually I removed it and have been trying to sell it ever since.

1214.2Who owns lease car accessories??VOGON::KAPPLERWed Sep 05 1990 17:5910
    Which brings us to related question......

    I understand that if you order things like roof-racks on a lease car,
    these a written-off over the period of the lease (rather than the
    anticipated life of the car). Does this mean you can keep them when you
    return the car?

    p.s. I mean detachable things, obviously (-:

    The way I understood it was that accessories present when the car
    was purchased were the property of the lease company. Otherwise
    you had to return the car to its original state when you bought
    it, e.g. removing anything you had fitted.

    does this mean that if you want to fit anything, suce as rear wiper,
    you can go ahead and do it?

    If I was you Mike I would, you can always remove it before you give it
    back, and even if you didn't I doubt they would notice.

I believe you need written permission to add anything that involves cutting
holes in the car (including a radio aerial if you forgot to specify a radio
and antenna when ordering), and that such permission is not usually granted.

1214.7fixing a hole where the rain dont get inSHAPES::FIDDLERMThu Sep 06 1990 11:304
    I already have a hole (albeit with rubber bung), I only lack the wiper
    (and motor and electrcs!!). Just curious really.

1214.8Fit it, don't worryKERNEL::SHELLEYRCSC, BasingstokeFri Sep 07 1990 14:088
    I can't see anything wrong with adding a rear wiper if the provision
    is already there, because nobody would notice if you remove it when
    you hand the car back.

    I've fitted a high level brake light on the rear shelf of my leased
    XR3i which I intend removing when I hand it back.

1214.9Tell fleet as wellVOGON::COLEMike, TPAG Product management, 830-6571Fri Sep 07 1990 17:3410
    I have fitted towbars to all my leasemobiles - Pam D recommended that
    having it fitted afterwards is a lot cheaper than the lease cost.

    Golden rule is that you MUST notify fleet dept - sending a mail to fleet
    tellingthem you are fitting a towbar is sufficient.

    As you have then fitted the towbar, it then belongs to you; so take it
    or leave it.

1214.10mind the bodywork!YUPPY::SACKMANJI was dreaming of the past...Mon Sep 10 1990 19:089
    I asked about fitting 'items' to one of my lease carand phoned fleet
    who said phone PHH (this was a couple of years ago!). They said
    anything I fitted was fine as long as the bodywork was not drilled or
    modified, if it was it had to be restored to original or the attached
    item left in place. So you're OK if exterior body panels are left as
    is.
