1208.1 | Daimlers are rarer (and cheaper) | CHEFS::OSBORNEC | | Mon Sep 03 1990 18:20 | 13 |
|
Am in Cannes so a long way from my reference books.
Think the number is considerably higher for Jags, but only 380 approx
Daimlers built.
I'm looking for a nice one, but 13k pounds is not on. Your figure is
more realistic, even for a good car. Lot of optomists about .....
Know of an immaculate black Daimler XJ12C in Ascot. Am gently probing
to find out if available, at what price.

I believe it was 2500 XJ4.2Cs, and only 700 5.3Cs...
The 5.3 is the one to have, but difficult to find.

I have seen a Jaguar V12 5.3 in a local garage, with four flat tyres,
different coloured bonnet & boot & only one door attached, in addition
the roof has been cut off in preparation for a softop. I asked the
mechanic what plans were in store for it & he said that it was an
abandoned project, left with them by a customer & there were no
specific plans in place.
I understand that, given that the engine is reasonable, the thing could be
restored to MOT state for around 4k.....tempting, yet I expect that 4k
could run to 5 & so on.
I don't believe the car, as it is, would fetch more than 1k...so it
could be a good project. If you've 5 or 6 thousand lying around !!

But is it the XJCoupe ??? Thats what make all the difference in price.
The coupe is easily the nicest looking of the XJ series, maybe including
the XJS :'}. The coupe is easy to distinguish from the normal XJ by the
fact that it is pillarless i.e. no metal between the front and rear side
windows, just glass.

| Not moving in the right sort of social circles, I've never been close enough to
an XJC to see... but how does the door glass seal at its rear edge if there's
no door pillar?

By good workmanship. Not many constructors can manage it, especially
hard is keeping the seal at 100mph plus. Apparantly William Lyons was
behind the design and insisted that the seal be good at all speeds.

| Quick question...
What's the Jaguar Model/Series as shown in the "Tennant's" Advert ?
Also used in the film "Mona Lisa" by Bob Hoskins ?
I thought *THAT* was the model under discussion here until the "door
pillars" description was added.
IMO, I'd expect one of these <mumble> Jaguar's to be around 3-5K, for
an unrestored model, or 8-10K restored ? They seem to getting a lot of
attention recently and should be "readily" available ?
Any ideas anyone ?

A somewhat modified Daimler XJ5.3C I think...
I believe it lives somewhere near Epsom these days,
although maybe someone's just done one up to look like it.

| Yes, but what is the seal? Is it just glass - glass (ie door glass butts up
to rear side glass) or is there a rubber strip between the two bits of glass?
Or something else altogether?

Yes, its an XJC, a Jaguar V12 5.3
RE: .8
The car your interested in is a MKII & you're right, these cars have an
almost cult following in my experience.

I've no idea what the seal is. Thinking about it again, pillarless means
that when the windows are wound down, there is no pillar between them, so
it could be that the edge of the window forms the pillar i.e perhaps some
sort of chrome strip, with a rubber seal at the edge.

The car used in the New Avengers was an XJC.
It had the body kit like the ill-fated Broadspeed racing XJCs (used
in the European Touring Car Championships in the mid-70s), but was
in fact just a standard V12 (fast enough for most) under the skin.

I should say fast enough... 0-60 in 7 seconds and 150mph?
Makes quite a few modern sports cars look a bit silly...
And all with fuel consumption in double figures (just).

A friend of mine had a Daimler 4.2 Coupe. The back windows didn't wind
down but more back and down. They had a rubber seal on them. However
the reason the 2 door was discontinued was primarily this seal not
working. The 5.3s are much rarer than the 4.2s, the manual 5.3 Jaguar
is the rarest and most sought after.

| 18mpg from a 5.3 is VERY hard to achieve. The early models were lucky
to make double figures at all. Bank on 8-12 mpg as reality, then you
may ocassionally get a nice surprise.

1208.23 | Some sums someone | ULYSSE::FROST | | Tue Oct 09 1990 13:30 | 8 |
| I used to get 15-16 LITRES/100 km at 150 - 160 kmh on the autobahns.
22 - 25L/100 km at 250 kmh
Consumption would climb to 18 - 21 L/100 km in cities.
The figures quoted are "from new" throught the life of the car.
