1165.1 | Fix it! | IOSG::MARSHALL | Harry Palmer | Wed Jul 25 1990 12:50 | 13 |
| If the rubber has just dislodged and not split, and the mounting brackets
and bolts are intact, it would be simple to fix it, and a lot safer.
Just put a jack under the sump and lift the engine a couple
of inches, then put the mounting back properly and tighten everything up.
Don't forget to take the jack out before you drive away!
If the rubber has split or something else has broken, I wouldn't drive the car
any further than the nearest garage... (where you buy the new bits and fit
them in the same way as above).

Jacking an engine under the sump......
Interesting thing the MGB engine. The sump must be very strong.
Mine does not look though it would survive.
I'd recommend jacking near a stronger part of the engine's bottomside.

| ... put a large piece of wood between the jack and the sump to
spread the load. This does work. I've tried it myself ...
The chances of the engine falling out are zero because the subframe
for the front suspension is in the way. However, replacing the mounting
is so easy, that you might as well do it.

1165.4 | Sorry, forgot the wooden block... | IOSG::MARSHALL | Harry Palmer | Wed Jul 25 1990 14:10 | 4 |
| No the engine can't fall out, but if it did come adrift you'd
probably have a snapped gearbox first shaft and a few other problems too...

| I assume that the engine is held at the rear also. On both sides?
What I'm getting at is : would it survive with 3 out of 4 mountings?

1165.6 | Doubt if it's serious | HAMPS::LINCOLN_J | | Wed Jul 25 1990 14:37 | 7 |
| Engine mountings are fail safe. If the rubber goes the metal stops
it from falling out. On some cars it's possible to fit them upside
down - a very foolish thing.
This doesn't sound very serious to me. Just fit a new one.

Approx cost each #4 , #5.50 & #11 respectively. Do replace both
of them while your at it (there probably the same age). As has already
been stated its a very easy job.
Re. .5 No there are only 2 Engine Mounts (there are 2 more on the
gearbox). I would'nt even drive it out of the garage in this state.
Only thing that puzzles me, is why are you putting an open top
Sports Car into storage at the begining of August ????

I'm off to a more consistant climate (ie. guaranteed sun)
for a couple of months where I have waiting for me a jet black
'Vette Stingray.
I'm not going to leave my MGB in the street all that time so it's
taking voluntary retirement for a while.

1165.9 | RE: original Problem | RDGE44::JONESK | Yep you sure are | Thu Jul 26 1990 10:10 | 10 |
| I jacked up the engine last night and managed to remove the dislodged
mounting. It was quite distorted from it's original round shape
but I managed to put it back straight and it got me to work this
morning although by the time I arrived at DEC Park, it had shifted
slightly (approx. 5mm).
Later today I'm off to Beech Hill to see if they have a replacement
which I will fix tonight with a bit of luck.
