| have you tried Armour-all?
i used it on wing mirrors & bumpers on my car (all the grey plastic bits),
and was v. happy with the results: they look clean and (almost)new.
the interior (dash etc) looks new.
it's also made washing the car easier because dirt doesn't stick to the plastic
as it used too; water tends to bead & roll off
the bad thing about it is that it leaves a greasy feel to everything it's
applied to.
I think armour-all is really a finish rather than a cleaner (tho it does remove
wax & grime off plastic)

| I managed to get hold of some `bumper paint' which is in fact like
boot polish, but runny.
You usually need a couple of applications to get it looking nice,
becuase it absorbs into the bumper. (also needed is some elbow
grease!).
Maybe this would do the trick.
Lewis.
PS. It's like black paint, so only use it on black bumpers etc.
PPS. You can also get it in silver and some other colours. I'll
look at it closer tonight.

I used this and it did the trick for about three months or so. I believe this
is what some Valet companies use. It was a bit exoensive - 3pounds seventy or
so per can but gave a good shine.

| Simoniz "Black Chrome" worked a treat on my Granada's sadly neglected
Vinyl roof and all the black trim inserts. Like a runny wax (it's
got a naptha base) and needs lots of rubbing in but after buffing
up when it had dried it came up a real treat. 1.99 a bottle (I
think) from Halfords or most accessory shops. It also wipes of chrome
and paint OK too when it's wet, but is a bit harder to get off when
it has dried.
Definately recommend it.

| If my experience of old with MGB roofs is anything to go by you're
onto a loser trying to revive it. Nothing will do any good bar make
it look good for a while.
Replacements used to be really quite cheap though, how about a new
one?.

John,
I have no choice, a new convertible roof for the astra costs a fortune.
Besides the roof is only just three years old... I have been out and
bought a can of Armour-all will give it a try at the weekend...
Heres hoping !!!

| SHAZ,
Yes I have. I purchased the car second hand and have owned it now
for about 7 months...
The car is an absolute dream and I love it to death !!!
MY personal thoughts out of both cars would be the Astra.. (Mind
you I am Bias)..
It has a bigger engine 2.0litre Injection and hasn't got the
dated looks like the Volkswagen.. (aren't VW working on a new
convertible for the new shape golf ?)
Also the best thing is the car is a little more unusual, Escorts
and Volkswagens are so popular everybody seems to have them.
The spare parts are expensive, not that that would bother you
purchasing from the lease scheme.
As long as the Astra has Power steering which I think is fitted as
standard you should be O.K. with it..
If you want me to tell you some more about the car... I will mail
the rest to your all in one, stops me blabbing on here and putting
everybody else to sleep !!
Regards

| Out of interest, have you had any problems with water leakage around the seal
at the roof/windscreen, when talking to an unbiased (about this particular
thing anyway!!) salesman, trying to compare the Astra and Golf, he stated
that when he worked for Vauxhall when the Astra cabrio 1st came out they
had no end of claims from extremely damp owners for new seats, clothes etc.

Can anyone tell me which is the best?
Between the Escort (new shape), Golf and Astra convertibles in terms
of standard features, fuel economy, comfort, optional extras available and
performance (not cost and shape).
And, any opinions on any of the above if possible.
He doesn't want to know too much, I hear you say.
Any info would be great, as I'm trying to help my wife make the
decision. :-)
Thanks,
Tony
