1062.0. "New METRO GTi 16V" by ESSB::DOODY (3 Cylinders Good- 4 Cylinders bad) Mon May 07 1990 18:03

I have just received my copy of the new METRO brochure,
The GTi 16V looks especially interesting, (if a bit on the slow side
9sec 0-60) Does anyone have any more info? I'm looking for just this
type of car at the moment.

1062.1Gti 16v versus XR2iANNECY::PARKERFri May 11 1990 16:0830

I have the Metro 'buff' that was given to Rover employees.

GTi spec says 114 mpg top speed and 9 secs 0-60.

on the surface this compares not so well with the Xr2i (market leader)
but look closer and you see the following:

    		Gti XR2i

    Price	10,145 (I think)	10,445

    top speed	114 118

    0-60	9.0 8.2

    50-70	7.3 9. something

    30-50	7.something a lot slower

    mpg 38/56/44 28/44/38

Some of that is from memory but the 30-50 and 50-70 times which
are the important ones give a couple of seconds advantage to the
Metro. MPG figures for the Metro are in another league so the
XR2i is not such a clear winner.

	A Metro that does 0-60 in 9.0 seconds and a 114 M.P.G just has
	to be something else !

And the Metro is only a 1.4Litre compared to the XR2i 1.6Litre so
the insurance should be less for the Metro.

The 30 - 50 and 50 -70 times can be misleading... just like the
    0 -60.

The 30 - 50 and 50 - 70 times are not usually the "best" the car
can achieve, but are for a specific gear. (50 - 70 is normally 5th).
So all the figures may do is show how low geared the car is.

The best indicators are the comparatives times for 3rd/4th/5th gears
for the same speed increase. Gives a good idea of torque and
    performance.

That said I'm not trying to defend the XR2i.

I had to hire a car last week. My manager said I could have a group
    A. When I went to Avis in Cardiff, they gave me a Metro GTi 16V!!!

    Anyway,

As stated before, first gear was not as quick as some other cars
but for me it was ample. Once up into second, especially at moderate
to high revs (3500 +) it took off! I was impressed. Third too was
    zippy, again at 3000+.

The engine sounds good. There is not the ROAR common to many sporty
numbers, but rather a reassuring GROWL as I took her up through
    the box.

She ran smoothly at high speed. Very little vibration. Good at
long distances (90 down the M4 for 2 hours).

Unleaded petrol. London - Bournemouth - London #9.45

Bucket seats. Adjustable too at the baso of your spine for added
    comfort.

Good bootspace. Limited rear legroom but ample really.

Manual sunroof and windows. (NOT electric).

I did have some problems with the radio. the search facility didn't
work all that well. It seemed at times as though it could have
    done with a booster.

All in all, I was very impressed and most reluctant to leave it
    back with Avis on Saturday.

For the old A series, 3.5Krpm has to be over halfway. I know that
they can be made to rev VERY high, but in standard form, I wouldn't
take one above 6 or 6.5Krpm myself (unless it wasn't mine :-) )

    In my paper today...

"The new Rover Metro has clinched 21 land speed records.

"In a 24-hour high speed run, dubbed Project Pride, the 1.4 litre Metro
GTi averaged 121.33 mph on unleaded petrol.

"Eighty volunteers from the Rover workforce took part in the test at a
    track in Bedfordshire.

"The Metro, which reached speeds of over 130 mph, broke 19 existing
records and set up two new ones."

Just got one of these from Mavis too.

Very impressed with the engine, compared to old BL engines, but you have to
press it to go fast, and those rev's don't come without some cost - loads of
go-juice !

But what does the caravan warning light indicate ? (case of RTFM i s'pose)

To tell you you've got a caravan on! :-)

Seriously, it's for when you are using the "towing" electric socket, it
flashes when you use your indicators, just to let you know that it's
    all working, I suppose.
1062.15Anyone in DEC Reading got one?UKCSSE::PLATTCan't help if you don't talk to me!Wed Dec 19 1990 10:0315
    Hi Folks,

My lease is coming up for renewal soon and I like the sound of the
Merto GTI. Has anyone got one that I could have a look at? The ARG
dealer won't have one untill after X-mas.

Also, does anyone know how much one of these costs on the lease scheme.
There are no quotes for a Metro on VTX at the moment.

If there are any kind soles who would let me look at thier GTI drp me a
mail at either UKCSSE::PLATT or PETER PLATT @REO.

    Thanks,

    Pete Platt.
