Fair takes you back to your youth.
First race meeting I went was the TT @ Goodwood in '59. 6 hrs long.
Sat in the main grandstand at the start of the straight. Masten Gregory
went straight on at the right-hander leading to the straight, hit the
bank hard, & was thrown right out of the car & across all the ditches
& catch-fences. Minor broken bones, but should have been dead if
probability had prevailed.
Car was a Lister-Jag. Absolutely folded in two over the cockpit
- he'd have had no chance if he'd been strapped in. Ever since then
I have sworn not to wear seat-belts in open cars -- after all, I don't
stay strapped to my motor-cycles or to my racing karts.
Race high-light was when Moss's Aston caught fire & burnt out in
the pits -- promptly snatched one of the other team cars & went
on to win.
Happy days. I'll save my 250k though : can buy lots of D-type replicas
for that. They're good enough for me.

I'll say so! - I was at that meeting too. Funny old world innit?
Didn't see the Gregory crash, but had a fair view of the Aston fire. The
other day I was going through some old photos and came across one I took of
the burnt out Aston after the race - pushed aside and looking all forlorn.
Back to Listers - are you sure that Gregory was driving one? I remember
his driving a Tojiero-Jag. in those days.

Not all Listers had Jag engines. An acquaintance of mine has one with a
Chev V-8. He bought the car new (I was there the night he picked it up) as
a last_years_race_car for about the price of a new Corvette at the time. He
raced a couple of times in local club events and drove it on the highway
late a night a few times as well. (I remember vividly seeing 160mph on the
speedometer and muttering prayer like phrases....)
One winter he didn't get all the water out of the block and if cracked. Car
hasn't been touched since. It's got about 4500 miles on the odometer.

Hhhmmmm........
I "thought" it was a Lister that Gregory drove, but nowadays I'm
never very sure about anything. Senility should be a crime really.
Big prang anyway. I'll dig out the programme, & have a look.

1052.5 | Costin shape? | DOOZER::PENNEY | | Mon Apr 30 1990 19:24 | 8 |
| Re .-1,
Clearly he has no use for this broken-down heap! Tell him I'll take it off
his hands for the scrap value - as a favour mind.
Notwithstanding the title of .-1, is it really the knobbly shape, or the
slightly later somewhat smoother more bulbous Costin design? I Thought
only the latter were listed new with the option of Chevrolet engine.

I haven't seen the car in years but my recollection is that it is in
fact a 'knobby' version. It is right hand drive. I seem to remember that
it was possible to order the cars without an engine and fit your own choice.
This particular car sat in the showroom of Auto Engineering, Lexington, MA,
for over a year. It was 'obsolete' as a current racer even though it had
little or no milage on it and they couldn't sell it. (The folks at AE at
the time were racers themselves even though their main business was Jags
and Mercedes.)
The car is white with blue stripes (ie: US racing colors). I suppose it's
possible that it was an unwanted 'team' car of someone.
Sadly the car sits, along with a 1_of_3 Ferrari, a Cobra, a 100S AH and
other various collectibles, while the owner procrastinates, gets older
and even less motivated than he has been in the last 20 years. Believe
me I, and others, have made serious attempts to purchase the car to no avail.
Perhaps the worst aspect is that the owner has no relatives and never married.
When he goes there is a good chance that the State will take over his assets
and God knows what will happen then.

Relief. My memory is vindicated (I think).
Article in Auto Classic this week says 25 knobbly Listers being
built, 8 already sold.

| re: 1/3 Ferrai
(I used to know all this stuff but...)
As I recall the car was build especially for the Marzotto(?) brothers. They
were well know local Italian hill climb specialists. The car has a 2.7 liter
V12 (snall block, early design). It is an open two seater, with deeply
sculptured fenders in the front and an odd cut out in the rear deck to
carry the spare tire. Also, I think it's right hand drive. It isn't a
particularly pretty car.
I can only remember seeing one reference years ago. An old magazine article
with some race results from Italy. There was a picture of the car, or a simliar
one. I think it's a type 225S.

1052.11 | 'New' Aston DB4s. | NEWOA::SAXBY | | Wed Aug 07 1991 17:46 | 12 |
|
Following on from the 'new' Listers, did anyone see the 'new' Aston
Martin DB4 Zagatos which have just been built?
Apparently Aston allocated 4 chassis numbers to the DB4 Zagato
production in addition to the ones built and some engineering company
has now, with AM approval, built those 4 cars. They are for sale now...
Price On Application.
Mark
PS They may be a special version of the Zagato on further consideration.

1052.12 | Half of mega $ is still a lot | TSGDEV::WAITE | Things are fine in Mt. Idy she goes on | Wed Aug 07 1991 18:11 | 7 |
| There is an article on these 'new' Astons in the Sept. issue of T&CC. The
factory has actually labeled them 'second version' or some such so they
won't be confused with originals. Since there are only four of them and
the chassis numbers have been published, I would think it difficult to pass
them off to anyone as originals. On the other hand they may actually be
better than originals given imporved materials and techniques. The article
mentioned something about costing 1/2 of what originals do today.

| The annual Vintage Fall Festival at Lime Rock Park (USA, Conn.), has as
their theme this year --- Lister's.
I've only seen two or three in vintage racing so it surprises me that there
would be enough cars available to fill out a field.
Maybe one of the 'new' ones will show up.
My old aquaintence with an low mileage 'knobby' is supposed to be getting it
ready for the event. (I'll believe it when I see it)
One Lister I would love to see is the Lister Bristol. Years ago one was run
in the New England area fro several years. It's the only one I ever saw and
even in the articles I've read on Listers, there has been almost no mention
and no photographs.
