1043.0. "Buying a Morgan: what, where, how much?" by DOOZER::KERRISK (VMS * RDB * SQL * ULTRIX) Tue Apr 24 1990 12:00

    G'dfay,

I've got a friend in NZ who's considering buying a Morgan in
the UK and importing it into NZ later this year. They've
asked me to find out some info about prices - I know
next to nothing about Morgans, but they're very important to him.

So what sort of price would one expect to pay, and where would
    one look for a

2nd hand Morgan (1988 or later),
    		1994 cc, Rover Engine
    		2 seater "Plus 4"

(New prices would also be interesting)

Does anyone have any idea about how one would go about getting
such a car from the UK to NZ?

    Cheers

    Michael

1043.1Newish s/hand aren't cheap!!IOSG::MARSHALLA mse once bit my sister...Tue Apr 24 1990 12:3319
For interest, new Morgan prices are (actually June 89 prices):

+4: 15075 to 16819
+8: 19528

I assume these are without VAT, car tax etc.

1989 +8s fetch 30000. The massive waiting list pushes the price of newish cars
through the roof. The old joke is put your name on the Morgan list for two
cars, then when they arrive four years later sell one for twice what you paid
for it, and get a free morgan!

They apparently have very bad handling and are generally regarded as overpriced,
even the new prices; you're paying a lot for the name. Also, they need looking
after; I've met sad morgan owners whose cars have woodworm / rot / ...

Hope that's some help.

Scott.

You do not buy Morgans in this country, you inherit places on the
waiting list to be considered as an owner :-)

Seriously, current prices for cars are for something silly like a 2 or
3 year waiting list, so they would not be terribly relavent, if you are
looking for a purchase price to compare with!, I agree with -1, +8's
are like gold-dust, and fetch "silliar than thou" prices, often well
above list price for a second hand car!

1043.3I knew a man who ...45624::LINCOLNThe sun has got his hat onTue Apr 24 1990 18:2321
I once worked with a man who ordered a Morgan +8 and actually
lived long enough to have it delivered. He ran around in it for
a while and then decided to sell. It took many months to find a
buyer at 5,000 or so. This would have been circa '83. It also
proved somewhat troublesome during the few thousand miles he ran
it including a breakdown on the way to work one day.

Apart from the profit aspect a reason people always seem to sell
them when they arrive is that the youthful enthusiasm for open
topped wind in the air motoring tends to fade into the problems
of living on a small pension when the great day arrives.

Incidentally at the same period a guy in our office popped out one
day and came back with a Ferrari 308 (only a GT4 I'm afraid) which
he'd bought for 4,500 or so. It had novel ventilated sills, ie.
it had rusted right through. He said he used it mainly for "Posing"
and shortly traded it for a Golf Gti.

Ah nostalgia!, not what it used to be though.

1043.4Some help, but not much i'm afraidRUTILE::SMITH_ANo-one puts baby in the cornerWed Apr 25 1990 09:5019
Got to agree with the other notes posted - new car has impossible
waiting list, second-hand don't appear too often and when they do
don't be surprised to find rot. For a handbuilt car they don't seem
to build much 'durability' into the thing.

Sources for prices and s'hand sales would be in magazines like Classic
    Car and Practical Classics.

As to shipping - if you are in the London area or some kind Deccie
on YUPPIE:: wants to help, then you should get copies of the
Australasian 'giveaways' like LAM and TNT. These magazines have
loads of shippers in the classified adds who are very experienced
in the methods of shipping cars to NZ and AUS. One thing you're
friend will need to find out is how long he has to own the car in
England before he can get the tax-free benefits of shipping his
    car to NZ.

Keep your fingers crossed, you might get the use of a Morgan for
    6 mths !

For those in the UK:

Next week's "The Troubleshooter" (Sir John Harvey-Jones analysing the financial
prospects of various firms) on BBC2, Tuesday, is about the Morgan Car Company.

Apparently Morgan want to increase production by 1 car a week...

H-J may suggest something radical...
