Try:
Blocked fuel filter,
Blocked fuel line
Faulty fuel pump
Incorrectly set carburettor float
Blocked carb jets
Leaking fuel line (particularly at joints)

While you're at it, adjust ignition timing, valve rocker arm clearance,
carburettor mixture richness

Also check the auto choke works properly (or manual one if that's what you've
got)

Also check the filler cap - a non venting one may cause this sort of
problem if the car expects the vent...

...and the thing I always mention - the condenser, a faulty one can
cause all sorts of odd (fuel-like) symptoms.

Me too! On an Escort 1.3L! Changing the filler cap made a world of
    difference.

Selling the car made even more!

I'm an advocate of changing the fuel filler cap. I used to have a SAAB that
wouldn't start if had been sitting in the sun for a while. I could crank it all
day, and nothing. As soon as I would open the fuel cap (which would make an
incredible sluping noise, and would almost suck my hand into the tank), then try
to start it, it would fire right up.

I had switched the stock cap for a locking one. Little did I know that the
locking cap didn't vent properly. When I switched back to the original cap, I
never had the problem again.
