1026.0. "Van hire info needed" by BAHTAT::HILTON (Two in the box ready to go) Tue Apr 17 1990 12:29

    Hiya,

    I need to hire a van to get a 3 piece suite from Liverpool to Leeds. I
    am hoping to do this on the weekend, so does anyone know if you can
    hire a van for one day?

    Which companies are cheapest?
    Can Hertz/Avis do me a Digital deal??

    Any other experiences/offers/advise etc would be very much appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Greg

1026.1No Digital DealIOSG::MARSHALLA mse once bit my sister...Tue Apr 17 1990 12:4611
When I rang Hertz and Avis, they said their arrangements with Digital didn't
cover anything larger than an estate car, so you can't get it cheap that way.

Prices vary wildly, from 35 per day to 80+ for a transit-sized van. Ring
round everywhere in the Yellow pages and see who's best.

Don't forget to check whether it's unlimited mileage, and if you only need it
one-way see if they can collect it from the destination (might be cheaper than
taking it back yourself?).

    Try Kendall Hire ....Guildford 0483 574434 or Aldershot 0252 333598.
    I have used them on several occassions, a bit down market but the
    cheapest after 30 mins or ringing around on the yellow pages.

1026.3Try Avesco, they're localMINDER::SMITHDBTue Apr 17 1990 14:0316

    I hired a Luton bodied transit from Avis to collect the Caterham in
    last May. I did get a special deal with being with DEC. It cost me 55
    for the day, no mileage charge. An ordinary transit was about 30 on
    the same terms.

    I would have hired a van from Avesco (in Wigan, near Wigan Pier) as
    their ordinary rates are even cheaper, but they didn't have a Luton
    available on the day.

    I found one-way hire charges to be far more expensive than hire and
    return, and Avis etc would only do it between specific locations eg
    London and Manchester Picadilly.

1026.4Trailer hire?SIMD::KENNEDY_CThe same old clichTue Apr 17 1990 14:216

    Have you tried Salford van hire, or Wallasey?

    On the same topic, anyone know of a local Liverpool firm that does car
    trailer hire, including tow car? I'm moving a B from Irby to Ellesmere
    Port, and don't fancy towing it.
1026.5The Local GarageMALLET::MARTINTue Apr 17 1990 15:3112
    My experience of hiring Luton vans and Merc Trucks (in connection with my
    hobby) is that the best rates are offered by local garages who own, say,
    ten vehicles.

    I've always found them by noticing the vans parked on a garage forecourt or
    by following up adverts in "Yellow Pages".

    By the way - far as I know the Digital car insurance won't cover you
    while driving vans. The hirers can arrange cover for you for the day or
    you can drive on your own personal insurance (if you have such).

1026.6BREW11::BELLMartin Bell, EIS Birmingham, UKTue Apr 17 1990 18:3814
    Greg,

    admittedly this is going back a few years, but i hired a Luton from
    Avis and got 30% off with Digital discount - i would definitely check
    with them cos it certainly will save a few quid.

    Also check the internal dimensions and if possible hire a transit
    van rather than a Luton. The Luton is slow and drinks petrol at
    an amazing rate. Them thar Pennines are mighty steep!!!

    Also, ask whether they do a day rate (eg 9:00 'til 16:00) if you
    think that you can get there and back in time.

1026.7More On CostsMALLET::MARTINThu Apr 19 1990 10:4514
    Re 1026.6
    Thanks Martin. 30% discount is worth investigating next time I hire.

    Some thoughts on the subject of costs;-
         - Lutons drink fuel. I've had them as low as 10mpg, so I estimate
           my costs on that basis.
         - Daily rates can seem cheap, but if there's also a charge per
           mile or km then that mounts up - my trips are usually about 500
           miles return.
         - Some hire companies hand over vehicles with a near empty fuel
           tank. The more fuel in the vehicle when you hand it back, the
           more money you are giving to the next hirer.

    Greg.
1026.8Wanna hire a van, Jon???? WARNUT::YATESTurbcharged for perfection...Thu Apr 19 1990 17:319
Greg (Hilton...)

As I told you, in my experience AVIS aren't really sure what they're doing in
this area ... They couldn't make up their minds whether or not I could have a
van at Digital rates, and the insurance was another nightmare! My advise is
definitely go hunting locally - there'll be some small cheapo outfit who'll hire
you a Luton at a really good price. Go for it!

1026.9car trailer near Dec Park?SUPER7::BROWNI'm real sure; it's not an adverbMon Mar 18 1991 10:199
    Similarly to .4...

    Does anyone in the Dec Park area have a car trailer I could hire/borrow
    or know where I can hire one locally at reasonable rates? I need to get
    an Escort van to Torquay, and am thinking about towing it as an
    alternative to driving it.

    Cheers, Laurie.

    It's about 17cwt, with about another 2cwt of stuff in the back, that
    brings it up to just short of the ton. In kilos that's (19*112)/2.2 =
    967 and a bit kees. I'm planning on using the Granada Estate to pull
    it, should cope! ;^)

      This is the company that sponsors the racing activities of the
      Noble 23 :-)

      I forgot to check on the load capacity of the trailer, I'll try to
    remember over the weekend. If your requrement is urgent, mail me, and
    I can phone you at home over the weekend.

    Not urgent really, I need it for Thursday night, 4th of April.

    Letting me know on Monday is fine by me.

    The load weight of the trailer is 900kg, so if you look something out
    of the back of the van then it would be ok!

    If you're interested, then please get in touch via mail
