939.0. "Chevette stereo problems." by RDGENG::CONNOR (Vauxhall Chevette-a car for the future!) Thu Jan 25 1990 16:20

I wonder if anyone can help. I own a Vauxhall Chevette and have
recently had a Stereo fitted. It has been working sound until someone
smashed the side of the car in, in a carpark. The stereo is playing a
lot of background noise and you can only just here the music in the
background. I've checked the wires for the speakers and they seem allright.
All the wires appear to be connected in the back of the unit itself, so
I wonder if anyone knows of any other problems that could be causing
    it.
Also, I want to know if I can fit a bigger carb onto a standard 1256cc
engine without too many mod's. If there is any problem what is another
cheap echonomical way to gain more power without serious mods.

Does the stereo have a cassette deck? If so does the problem persist when you
play a tape? Check the antenna wire. It could have been crushed or the casing
ripped off of it when the car was hit.

Perhaps you have speakers in the doors? Could the wires on the
side of the bump have deem damaged. They may now be touching some
    metalwork (going to ground).

Regarding putting a bigger carb in, I used to have a 1300 escort which one of
the previous owners had upgraded by fitting the carb from a 1600 engine (ie twin
vent instead of single vent). From my experience with that, the only other
"essential" mod may be a different inlet manifold with the correct mounting.
I noticed no improved performance with this carb, and on long journeys the extra
fuel caused the engine to flood and misfire. I suspect to get the benefit of a
bigger carb you would need a modified camshaft (different valve opening times)
and possibly an uprated exhaust to get rid of the extra waste quick enough.
Maybe also different valves; the list is endless. From my (limited) experience,
there is a lot of work involved to get extra power from an engine. The easiest
way to get "improved" performance would be to adjust everything to ensure its
all up to spec, eg ignition timing, fuel mixture, rocker arm clearances (or
whatever the equiv is on OHC engines), camshaft timing chain tension, and so on.
I did this on the escort and it did improve things; it was a lot quieter too!

Scott.

PS there are also silly things like checking the brakes aren't binding...
939.4Thanks, the problem has been solved.RDGENG::CONNORVauxhall Chevette-a car for the future!Fri Jan 26 1990 18:0210
Cheers everyone who replied. The stereo problem has now been fixed.
There was a wire that had been damaged in the accident causing the
problem, it is now back up and running like it should.
Regarding the engine mod, I am thinking of buying a late model Cavalier
SRi to solve my power needs, and eventually build up the Chevette into
a Street-Machine. I'm looking to drop a 327 chevy engine in it one day
when I have time and money. I'll drop a note in if I ever get round to
    it.
