Does anyone have any experience of registering an imported kit car
in the UK?
Briefly the situation is this, we (my son really) have obtained
from a friend the basics of a VW Puma GTE kit. It's usual thing,
fibre glass body sitting on a shortened Beetle floorpan with standard
(or nearly so) running gear, engine etc.
The question is - how do we avoid getting a "Q" registration? Can
we declare changes to a (notional) donor car which is being (has
been) scrapped and use its registration? If so, do we need to declare
what we are doing or just send the registration document to Swansea
in the normal way?
(The main point of avoiding a "Q" reg. is so that we can then do
a switch to a cherished number plate when a suitable one becomes
available - apparaently once a "Q" always a "Q").
Any advice will be welcome.

I'm thinking of bringing a car from the Isle of Man to England.
The car was originaly used in England and shipped/re-registered to the
Isle a few years ago.
Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a 'new' registration
ie J reg,(its a 1987 car) or will I need to go back to the original
plate?
Thanks, Craig.

Unless of course you can prove it's brand new and never been registered before! | |||||

A while ago when imported cars were reregistered in Britain they got
the current letter. This could be misleading and cars could be mistaken
for being newer than they actually were.
Nowadays you get the letter for the year when the car was first registered.
For '87 you should get a 'D' or 'E'.

I agree with .12 Unless you can't prove the original reqistration date
etc (Shouldn't be a problem) in which case you would be stuck with a
"Q" plate like a kit car ;-)
