695.0. "Cashing in on limited availability" by SIEVAX::WATSON (When the going gets weird...) Tue Jul 25 1989 19:00

I recently read of a Ferrari F40 going for auction in Japan. Evidently,
Ferrari tried to stop it but the car fetched 600,000+. Also, having
spent some time on Sunday looking at a BMW Z1, I see that they are going
    for about 45,000 - 50,000 after a supposed list price of 28,000.

What do people think of this ? I understand the supply and demand ideas,
but surely this is just buying a commodity ? Are Ferrari right in trying
to stop this ? Did Porsche REALLY blacklist people who 'sold on' their
959s ? What do you think about the silly money paid for cars like the
Ferrari 328, which were going for 180,000 after a list price of 47,000 ?

An auction held at Easter saw many cars failing to reach
reserves. The best price achieved was for a V12 E-type at
49,500 against an estimate of 60-65,000. About the cars
	didn't sell at all apparently.

Last weeks Sunday Times had an article on all the 200mph
supercars that you can/could/will be able to buy. There are
so many that you have to wonder whether the market isn't
going to become saturated - how many super rich are there
about?. I for one think it'll collapse quite badly.

I've been following the price curve. It is definitely confirmed
that the uncontrolled explosion is behind us. The "high volume"
cars have been coming down, almost back to normal (E-type, 308/328
    GTB, ...)

The real exceptional cars are still going up in price.

911 turbo ? No, Colin ! The one you want is spelled

Carrera RS (1500 examples made in 1973)

I'm afraid the price went up (and still growing) pretty high.
If you have additional funds you can take the 2.7 Carrera engine
    and make it a 2.8 RSR (300bhp @8000rpm).
