| I see from the channel 4 teletext service that the peugeot 205
will be soon available with the turbo charged 1.8 engine
.. if it also has the intercooler that means the engine
will put out (about) 90 BHP.. not bad bad for a car
that size

| re .12;
well, if the 309 hasn't got space for the intercooler, I doubt if the
205 will have.
Anyway, 70-odd bhp is still respectable, coupled with the strong
torque.

(possible rathole).. an intercooler is'nt that big surely ?
(PS: What does an intercooler look like anyway? .. so I can
find it when I (finally) get my TZD BX TD)

like a radiator

| An intercooler is an air-air radiator used to cool the air after it leaves the
turbo and before it enters the inlet manifold. It's usually mounted in front of
the coolant radiator. Look for a large air pipe leaving the centre of the turbo
and disappearing off to the front of the vehicle. A second large air pipe
returns the cooled compressed air to the inlet manifold. By cooling the air
after compression, you increase its density, which in turn increases the amount
of charge you can pump into the cylinder, and gives more power.
If your turbo connects directly to the inlet manifold, then you ain't got an
intercooler (unlikely these days)

| On the BX, I think(!) the intercooler is a big "box" which sits on top
of the engine, and has air ducted into it direct from the front of the
car, through(!) the bonnet.
There is then lots of plumbing, which disappears down the side of the
engine.
The BX is quite wide, and the engine compartment is stuffed pretty full
with the Turbo; certainly more than e.g. the 16v engine bay.
Of course, I may well be wrong (it wouldn't be the first time today...)
Feel free to come down to SBP and see if you can spot it yourself.
Peter.

| Pter's right. The BX intercooler is situated on top of the engine. it
is a box laying flat, with a radiator like grid in the face of it.
Engine air comes from the filter on the wing, round to the turbo, then
back up to the side of this box. It exitsd the box at the rear, through
individual ports to each cylinder.
Cooling air is diverted in front of the radiator up through the
soundproofing in the bonet and down across the intercooler, exiting
around the engine.

692.19 | confirm it's non-intercooled | UKCSSE::RDAVIES | Live long and prosper | Wed Sep 19 1990 13:27 | 6 |
| Read reports in a local rag, the 205 shares the 309 installation, i.e.
non-intercooled. They quoted around 78 BHP, 0-60 12.5 secs.
This now gives them a turbo across the entire range!.

692.21 | Metro Diesel? | PEKING::GERRYT | | Fri May 29 1992 14:11 | 7 |
| And how does the new Metro Diesel compare in terms of economy and
performance? I think it uses the Peugeot 1400cc diesel engine, but with
a different gearbox.
Anyone any figures/reviews of this?
Cheers, Tim
