628.0. "Stromberg 175CD Carb" by DELNI::OLESIN (Steve A. Olesin) Fri Jun 02 1989 14:33

			Stromberg 175 CD Carb

I've got an MGB 1978 with a just rebuilt ( by me this past weekend )
Stromberg carb fitted.

The cause for the rebuild was the symptom of not running. To finally get the
thing going well enough to deposit it back in my garage, I stuck a screwdriver
down it's sidedrafty little throat to hold the damper and metering needle up.
Other than running with quite a rich dark cloud following me, that didn't
seem like a good perminent solution - thus a rebuild.

I did not replace the metering needle nor it's mating seat. I did however
do the following :

	Replaced and adjusted float bowl untake valve
	Replaced some gaskets
	Replaced the diaphram on the damper
	Removed and remounted the automatic choke
	Cleaned all parts that appeared dirty ( since I could not find anything
	    that I was replaceing to have anything wrong with it )

After finishing this NOTE # 621 was written. Now I'm back to my original problem

SYMPTOMS :

	Engine starts well but idles quite high
	Engine runs roughly
	pushing on the accelorator pedal does little to chnage engine speed
	  ( while in neutral )

WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING AT ?????

628.3Weber carb.DUCK::NAGLEJFUNKY COLD RIBENATue Feb 20 1990 11:3921

    Does anyone know of a local WEBER carbs dealer in this area ??

    I'll briefly explain the problem.

    Since a new camshaft and bearings were fitted plus a general clean
    up the engine is running very lumpy on tickover. The carb has
    not been touched. Before the overhaul the engine was fine on tickover
    etc. It stalls alot etc.

    Its either the carb itself or a valve not seating correctly on
    tickover.

    The engine is smooth when pulling away but the fuel consumption
    is way too high even for a twin weber.

    Anyone have the dealers name plus some ideas.???

    Jeff.

628.5valve-timing ?SYSTEM::RUNDELLTue Feb 20 1990 12:582
     It almost sounds as if the valve timing is a tooth or so out,
    especially if the cam has been replaced.

    Thanx Mark. I called Phegre and they are closed this week so I'll
    look around for someone else or wait until next week.

    RE -1.

    You could be right about the timing. I'll check it out. Another
    point I've been thinking about is a sticking valve on tickover.

    In future I'll start doing the work myself again. When I had the
    work done it was the first time I had actually used the services
    of a mechanic to carry out the work. In the past I've always done
    the work myself. Still, if I do the work myself at least I know
    if its wrong then I am to blame.

    Jeff.
