579.16 | Sunroof breaking? | BAHTAT::HILTON | Two in the box ready to go | Tue May 22 1990 16:04 | 9 |
| Taken from April's Which:
"If you had a sunroof fitted to your car between March and October last
year, check whether it has a glass plane marked "VERTOPANE" halfway
along one of the long sides. If so, it may break in use - contact the
dealer who fitted it for a free replacement"

| re .16;
I had a sunrrof put into my wife's Astra last year by Autoglass
(I think); and they sent me a letter towards the end of last year
about this.
So if you were fitted by a "reputable dealer"; you should have hada
recall already!!

| Last weekend, I installed a curved glass sunroof onto my Beetle, it is
a glass tilt and remove one. I am so far very pleased with it, but for
one thing, What do you do with the glass when it is removed?, so far I
have been keeping it down in the passenger footwell, but this seems a
bit risky!, are there any bags, or padded boxes specialy made for this
(preferably not big $$'s)

May I ask how much it cost and where you got it fitted. I think it's time my
MANTA had a sunroof.
Any one else got any ideas on where I can get a sunroof fitted.

Mike,
are you sure that your manta could take having another hole cut in it ?

| The sunroof cost me 60 pounds to buy, being specialy curved for the
Beetles roof,
Cost of fitting ... 1 pint.
This was to steady my nerves as I fitted it myself last weekend, the
sunroof kit gives you a template and the neccessary bits. As long as
you measure it out carefully it is quite easy.
I used a "nibler" to cut out the metal, which is a sort of metal hole
punch which clamps into the end of a drill chuck (borrowed from the
local garage) This is made to do similar jobs, as it doesn't buckle the
roof, it holds each side of the cut steady whilst it cuts.
Apparantly a variable speed jigsaw is just as good.
The only tip I would give is to use 2 people whilst measuring where it
goes!. Everyone says.. oh no, you did what!!?, but it is really quite
asy, and only took about 3 hrs including trimming the headlining from
start to finish.
Carl.
PS, before anyone says, I have tried a hosepipe on it, and it doesn't
leak!

I agree about having a second person for moral support! I've never
fitted a sunroof, but my Dad and I fitted side windows into his old LWB
Landy. Quite nerve-wracking cutting the first hole........

| Hi, my Croma IE has developed a slight leak at the passenger side
front corner. Is there any easy fix for this (not putting it into
a garage, I hasten to add).
Thanks for all advice,

Don,
I assume you have a sunroof fitted, seeing as you placed your question
here. What you have to do is find the drain pipes and clear them out.
I had the same problem on an Alfa GTV, the drain pipes I found in the
back, and I managed to clear them by blowing through them. The problem
did not return.
Hope it helps .......

| I was flicking through a brochure on the Volvo 480.
I noticed that it now comes fitted with an electrically operated...
..."moonroof"
Someone always has to be different. I mean is there a difference ?
I always thought it was called a sunroof because you usually open it
when the sun is out. Would you use a moonroof only at night :-)

I always IMAGINED a moonroof was semi circular and sort of rotated out
of the way.
I'm probably hopelessly way off the mark though! :^)

| Thanks for your comment Mark. I check the piccies in the brochure
but it looked pretty much like a standard tilt and slide sunroof to me.

Maybe, in that case, Volvo are after the lager-lout market.
You can get your friends to 'moon' out of the roof at passers-by while
you drive along! :^)

579.29 | I prefer Mark's suggestion, a 'mooning' roof | CHEST::RUTTER | Rut-The-Nut | Fri Apr 12 1991 12:26 | 5 |
| Is it possible that by 'moonroof' they mean the glass type, which
you can see through even when closed, as opposed to the 'sunroof'
which you open 'when sunny' to see out of ?

| perhaps it's called a moonroof to attract vampires to buy the car -
the last thing they'd want on a car is a sunroof! :-)

The new MR2 non-T-Bar still has a "moonroof"!
Probably because it is half-moon shaped(ish) and sounds better than a
"kidney roof".

| Actually a moonroof is the clear glass, and the sun roof is usually
steel. At least it's that way in Canada EH.....:-)

| The term moonroof has been common at the lower class Car Auctions
for many years. It applies to any aperture in the roof, no matter
what shape it is or material its filled with.
The word sunroof is normally only used if a car doesn't have one,
as in "none of the disadvantages of a leaky sunroof".

| Perhaps it's a reference to the days of continuous darkness they have
in the scandinavian countries, so when volvos come out of the factory
at mid-day they open the roof and see .... the moon!! :-)

| In the US all sunroofs are called moonroofs. Or at least that's
what it seems to me. I figured it was just another
boot/trunk common language difference.
