While in Valbonne last week I've been able to do a very short test drive of the above. In short : 4 door saloon, lots of space, beautifully trimmed, very comfortable, very quiet, roomy boot, ABS, good radio, ... 2 ltr engine giving the best of 2 worlds : turbo and 16 valves. This one has an interesting feature : in addition to the normal overboost system fitted to all Fiat turbo engines, if you press the throttle flat out the waste gate shuts itself for up to 30 seconds giving something like 1.4 bar overboost. In this case you get a peak torque of 32.xx mkg at 2500 rpm. Now you have to consider the following situation : driving gently on the motorway in fifth, engine revving around 2500rpm, you decide to move fast. Instead of shifting to 3rd you just jump on the throttle and you get the magic 32 or so mkg. Impressive ! and very quiet. I'm sure it can give a hard time to Porsche drivers ... The car I drove was not fitted the "electronically controlled suspension" (variable damping) therefore I would not recommend using it for high speed cornering. Otherwise it is an excellent family saloon. Very good job !

486.1 | No more Lancia UK ? | SHIPS::SHADBOLT_S | Mon Jan 10 1994 15:22 | 11
As there is no general Lanci topic I thought I would post this here. According to Saturdays Guardian, Lancia have decided to discontinue manufacture of Right Hand Drive cars. The quoted reason is continuing poor sales which still seem to be blamed on the rust problems of the old Beta models. Presumable Fiat (the parent company) are going to concentrate on the Fiat and Alfa marques instead. Sad news - there have been some good cars over the years and their new sporty number looks, from the single picture that I've seen, pretty good. Steve.
486.2 | lancia thema with ferrari engine/suspension. | MASALA::BHAILE | Wed Jul 06 1994 16:49 | 6
I am thinking of buying a Lancia Thema special edition. It was manufactured in mar 88 and has a ferrari engine and suspension. Its listed as an 8.32 model in parkers price guide with no other information except it has a 3 litre v8 engine. Does anyone know anything good or bad about this particular model.Comments appreciated. brian.
486.3 | 8.32 = 8 cylinder, 3.2 litre | ESBS01::WATSON | Entropy: chaos at it's best | Thu Jul 07 1994 10:13 | 17 |
It has the 3.2l engine take from the 328 and Mondial QV. I think that it has different cams to drop the power a bit (The 328 has about 250 bhp). The rear spoiler raies out of the boot which is a bit odd. I think I have a mag with a review + cut away pic. of the car - I think they liked it, if I can find it, its your's What sort of money are they looking for ? Don't forget that this is a Ferrari engine demand a FSH (and a new cam belt)- you'll need it - also remember that Ferrari engines need tender love and care 30K miles is a high milage for on of these. Having said that the 3.2 litre QV (Quattro Valve - 4 / cylinder) is a pretty tought nut to crack. Rik No guarantee I can - I've just moved house ...

.3 It has the 3.2l engine take from the 328 and Mondial QV. I think that .3 it has different cams to drop the power a bit (The 328 has about 250 The engine base is the 328 V8. As mentionned above the cams have been made softer to get better torque and lower rpm. The crankshaft is also different: the original Ferrari one is a 'flat' version (180 degree between adjacent conrods) while the Lancia is a 90 degree (much like the US V8s). Of course the pistons and other parts are Lancia specific. Summary: only the outside box is Ferrari. But the sign 'engine by Ferrari' is a nice selling gimmick.

Since I started this topic 5+ years ago ... I've been looking for a new family car for the last 3 months. I've looked at the local products (Renault Laguna, Renault Espace, Peugeot 405, Citroen Xantia) as well as the new Audi A4 1.8T, the Opel Calibra, the Fiat Coupe, the Lancia Kappa, the Rover 620 series, etc ... Finally, by accident, we've found an ad about a Lancia Thema Turbo 16V with 35000km first registered in Sep 1992. This is the fully equipped version: air con, auto adjust suspension, ABS, etc ... The engine produces 185bhp at 5500rpm, it has A LOT of torque, value depends on how much you press on the throttle (variable overboost). We have a full year warranty (parts and manpower). So far I'm very happy with the car: very comfortable, quiet and fast. It's roomy and classy too. And ... we paid roughly half the price we would have paid for an equivalent product NEW. |
