365.0. "CAR AUCTIONS - GOOD OR BAD?" by 45416::SAXBY () Mon Oct 24 1988 11:33

I'm looking for a TR7 convertible (I know!) and I have got around
to thinking about buying one at an auction.

I was wondering if anyone has been to an auction, or better still
bought at one, and if so what they're experiences were.

As I see it the plus points are that the cars go quickly and at
a lower than usual price. The minus points appear to be that you
only get a cursory look at the cars and no warranty.

Tell me your experiences, is it worth me looking at an auction or
are the risks greater than buying privately (on the face of it it
    would appear not!).

Ever thought of buying a car from an auction? It's not as risky
as you might think......

I buy all my cars at auction now......and save "loads a money!"

The first car I bought at auction was a Cortina Crusader estate
for 2,020 from my local British car auctions (now called ADT car
auctions). I saved about 1,000 on what it would have cost me
from a garage. I ran it for a year......did about 18,000 miles on
top of the 20,000 miles it already had on the clock when I got it
......then sold it to a dealer for 2,100......not bad eh?

Any comments or experiences about car auctions?

Has anyone been to Blackbushe Car Auction recently? What's it like?

I will be changing my car soon, and wondered whether it was possible
to get a really reliable car from an auction. What I'm looking for is
a 2-3 year old low mileage Golf GTI. What sort of price do they fetch
there? I drive past Blackbushe every day and thought it looked worth
    checking out.

Should I wait till August for all the H-reg trade-ins? Or is now the
    best time to buy?

    Thanks,

        Dave.

VW Gti's tend to command quite high prices even at auctions; thats if you
actually find one at an auction. I've been to several ADT auctions (midlands
area), & Gti's were few & far between.

There is a magazine out at the moment that compares buying a 2nd
GTi and Gte - I think its called "2nd hand car buyer" - amazingly
    enough !

I've been to Blackbushe a few times and have been quite impressed
with the general prices and what's on offer. I would think most
2/3 yr old GTIs would be ex-company owned at auctions, few private
buyers would have any difficulty selling them unless there was
    something wrong.

In general though I agree with .19 about the lack of GTIs at
auctions and of those I've seen, some look to have been well
    used.

The best deals seemed to me, possibly unsuprisingly, to be on common
cars such as Fords, Vauxhalls, Rovers etc. On a recent trip I saw
    new (pre-registered, virtually no-mileage) XR2i's fetching
just over 8,000 which is at least a thousand less than you'd
get from any dealer (if you wanted one of course!)

a 1600L Cavalier h/b and willing to pay around #3,000 .I have read

               a) Methods of payment?
               b) Insurance....e.g How do you get covered for drive home.

365.25The Law (or the lack of it)SUBURB::SCREENERRobert Screene, UK Finance EUCTue Oct 16 1990 13:2117
I read an interesting article about Auctions and the Law.

Auctions are selling a car on behalf of the cars last owner. If there
is a serious problem with the car not mentioned in the auction, you
have to sue the car's last owner to recover losses, NOT the auctioneers.

The Auction has NO legal obligation to tell you the car's previous
owner. You have even less Legal protection than when buying privately.

Guess you know the car pretty well, if you leased it for the past few
    years though!

    Buyer beware.
    Rob.

p.s. I can't remember what losses you can reclaim through the court for
    this type of purchase.

	Cripes!

You can't sue anybody, certainly not the last owner.

The trades description act does apply to auctions which is why you
	don't find any descriptions offered.

Hi, can anybody tell me how I can 'trace' the previous history of a car
when viewing at an auction....ie...I want to buy a car at auction and
would prefer to know the background before buying a complete shed on
    wheels!

Preferably I would want an ex-lease/finance snatch-back - are you told
by the auctioneer as to whether it's an ex-lease/snatch-back??

    Cheers Dieter.

Last time I was there they held auctions at Wimbledon Stadium, Plough
Lane. The Stadium might be able to give you an address or phone number.

I've rung the wimbledon auctioneers and they've said they do 3 different
types; Mon/Fri mornings are Cars, some other day is commercials and yet
another day is under 3000. I'm going to the Friday morning one.
Which leads me to the next question, whats the quality/type of cars on
offer ? and is it a covered or open air auction, if you've got any
other info on this one it'd be appreaciated.

    Thanks
    Garry.
