88.0. "AUSTIN MONTEGO advice?" by ESASE1::GLEESON (Moss Gleeson) Tue Mar 01 1988 13:20

I am thinking of buying an Austin Montego and have been hearing
   conflicting reports.

      Are they unreliable?
Any body out there driving one at present who might give
      me advice I'd appreciate it.

                                              Thanks

                      Moss

Anyone know the story behind Montego tyres? My wife, Sandy, was ringing round
a few local tyre compansies and was told only Dunlop and Michelin make tyres
for the car and the cheapest quote was 54 for bog a standard tyre!

Are they a funny size?

My Montego 1.6L (1989 Model) currently runs on Goodyear GT65s. If I
remember rightly, they are 185 SR 14s.

Last time I had to replace a tyre with a hole in the side wall, I was
offered a choice of Avon, Goodyear, Michelin or Dunlop. All were over
    50.

Re.35:

The problem is with an Estate 1.6HL (1985). Don't know if it makes a difference.

Tell us what size tyres it currently has, and we may be able to tell you if
they're rare or not!

    Re .36:

Montegos originally had factory fitted Dunlop tyres. They were supposed
to be low rolling resistance tyres, but I don't think they were
    specific to the Montego.

Any 185 SR 14 tyre should be okay with the Montego, but expect to pay
around 45 to 55 for a decent one.

Try Micheldever Tyres - 0962 89437. They are VERY competitively
priced, offer excellent service and really know what they're talking
    about.

    Do Micheldever take PHH cards?

I don't think they take any fleet cards. Terms used to be strictly
cash or cheque, though I hear they now refuse chaeques and accept
    credit cards instead.

Micheldever Tyres now take PHH cards - I used mine there a few weeks
    ago.

Don't know about the Montego, but my young lady's Metro demands very
expensive tyres, too. Same manufacturer, so maybe the same story. They
have Michelin (I think) tyres, designed to let you drive for a limited
time when they have a puncture (though they get mighty noisy !!)

The people at Kwik-Bodge said they have to have these special tyres, as
the rims (i.e. on the wheels) are specially designed for them. Other
    tyres won't fit properly.

Now, maybe they were stringing me a line, but I'm not prepared to take
risks with my girlfriend car/life. Plus, I only wanted one tyre, so
wanted the same make/type as the others.

Some metros (and presumably other cars too!) have special rims without a
"rim well" (or whatever it's called).

The absence of the rim well stops the tyre coming off if it's deflated... it
also makes it impossible to get a tyre on! So you have to use special tyres
with different beads...

A lot of places charge extra for these tyres cos they claim there's a lot more
labour required to fit them... ATS in Reading told me that was a load of
rubbish...

Re.39

I'm told the "365" on the tyre size indicates "TDX" rims, which are "special
double seal rims".

Info from Humphries A33, Reading.
