I think you need a different class license to drive a dump truck. There are
several reasons why I could see a need for "special training" when it comes to
driving around with tons of dirt (or what-ever) behind you.
I have never seen one for rent without it including the driver.

| If you're going to haul a load of asphalt, you'll need more than an
F-150, anyway. An F-350 (or Chevy equivalent), probably....

| 350 vs 150 ok, whatever you say. I know s___ from shinola about truck sizes. I
just know I want a big one. I don't know if doing this myself is even feasible
since the area is pretty big - a 400' X 12' drive connected to a 66' X 22' area.
It's a LOT of work but if I can save a LOT of money then I'm game.

| Hmmm... truck rentals are often based on some amount of time, right?
Given the size of the area you want to clear, you'd probably need the
truck for more than 1 day, right? Even if you have all the removal
work done and have a big pile of asphalt ready to dump when you get
the truck, that's a lot of time and work.
You might want to look into short-term dumpster rentals instead. I
know a friend who was remodeling and rented a dumpster for, I think, 1
or 2 months. When he was done, the trucking company took the dumpster
(and all the construction trash) away with them. I don't know what it
cost him, but it can't hurt to ask...

| When I reroofed my house I rented a large (barely fit in my drive way) dumpster
for a week for ~$200.
This was in Sacramento 2 years ago, your mileage may vary.

997.6 | Hire someone with a CDL to drive the truck | CSLALL::NASEAM::READIO | A Smith & Wesson beats four aces, Tow trucks beat Chapman Locks | Fri Mar 10 1995 11:58 | 12 |
| If you know nothing about trucks, forget trying to rent one .....at least
the kind you're looking to rent. In order for you to have the proper
license (CDL) to drive one you need to know what you, admittedly, don' know.
As for an asphalt recycling plant, most won't touch any loads smaller than
10 yards. An F350 pickup would have to make half a dozen trips just to get
a yard or two there.
A dumpster is probably your only alternative to paying someone to remove
the asphalt. ...and it will be dumped at someplace other than an asphalt
re-cycling plant.

| I never really expected the truck idea to work (I thought there would be a
licensing issue as well as availability) but it was worth asking. The dumpster
is a good idea that I didn't consider. As far as where the asphalt is disposed
of, as long as it's in a legal landfill I don't care. It would be nice if it
could be recycled but at $3 a ton I figured it would cost me about $175 to have
Brox take it. And then pay them again for it when the paving company puts down
recycled asphalt in it's place. Now, if I could grind it up and reuse it myself
I'd have something.
