123.0. "Blasting through ledge -costs??" by WMOIS::TILLERY () Wed May 12 1993 15:17

    We're looking to build a house (we already signed the P&S), but
    the builder mentioned that there is an outside chance that they
    might have to blast through some ledge for the foundation. Can
    anyone tell me a ballpark figure as to what this might cost?

    Thanks,
    Sue

    One might also watch the movie (or read the book) "Mr. Blandings

    I don't know where you are, but there's a blaster in Bolton, Mass.,
    who could probably give you an estimate. The company is Hudson
    Explosives. (I have no idea if they are good, bad, or indifferent -
    just that they exist.)
123.6That's a recommendation!XK120::SHURSKYIf you're not lead dog, the view never changes.Thu May 13 1993 11:0110
The fact that they still exist is a strong recommendation. :-) ;-)
They must be doing something right!

    Thanks for all the replies. I was just curious on a ball park

    I am looking for some updated information on ledge. We just started
    digging for the foundation and you got it, we hit ledge. I am looking
    for current blasting prices, and any other information I can get.
    I want to make sure that no one is trying to take advantage of me.

    I don't have any specifics yet, we just hit it this morning.

    Any information would be great. I did a search and could not find
    any updated information.

    Thanks,

    I recently hit ledge when putting in an addition it was about
    20'x15'x5' and cost me $1500.00 plus another $200 for pre-blast survey.
    I had Hudson Blasting do it 508-568-1157. They did a good job with no
    problem except for one piece they missed that they are going to take
    care of. If you call ask for Tim Kelley and tell him Tom Casey referred
    you.

123.17what a blastABACUS::BOURQUEWed Dec 15 1993 10:3816
    We need to blast approx. 4 1/2 feet down. The bids have been coming
    in around 6k. This is for blasting and removal. The land is in
    Merrimack N.H.

    Tom, does Hudson do work in N.H. ?

    We thought of moving the location of the house, but unfortunately, time
    is against us and by the time we reissud a new plot plan, building
    permit, etc. It would bring us into late jan. early feb. and then we
    would be dealing with frost. And then there is still not certainty
    that we will still not hit ledge again.

    It looks like blasting is it.

123.8a live one?SMURF::WALTERSTue May 24 1994 15:1514

    A question on blasting. Is it possible for a live shot to remain
    in ledge?

    I was clearing scrub from the ledge at the rear of my house when
    I came across a white & blue wire leading into a drill hole.
    The hole is still plugged with gravel & sand.

    I just called the City and they didn't seem to have any interest
    in inspecting it, suggesting I track down the original contractor.

    Thanks,

When I was a kid, there were public service announcements on TV wherein a
famous athlete (Willy Mays?) told kids what to do if they found blasting caps.
Too bad I don't remember the answer. Have you tried calling the police or
fire department?
123.10that's the next thing to do I guessSMURF::WALTERSTue May 24 1994 16:483

    A neighbour suggested the Police or Fire Dept also. I'll give the
    cops a call. It may be that I'm concerned over nothing, but.....

    | Is it possible for a live shot to remain in ledge?

    Certainly not impossible. In a previous life I did some blasting with a
    small general contractor. Through carelessness we miswired a shot and
    only half went. Finding those that did not go was not easy. When we
    cleared the rubble from the cellar hole we found a stick of dynamite
    with a live cap in it.

    The blue and white wires which you found - are they hooked together
    with a small shorting clip or do they look more like they were ripped
    off another wire?

    Still shorted together means they were likely never wired and there is
    a chance there is a live cap at the other end.

    Looking ripped from a twisted splice likey means it was wired and it
    is just chance that the wire remained in the hole as they appear to
    have done.

    Was the blasting done recently? I would think the person who did the
    work would like to know for sure there is not a live cap in the rubble.
    I have to believe they would have the equipment to determine if those
    wire are open, shorted, or still have a cap at the far end.

    Please take into account I am no expert by any stretch of the
    imagination - just offering my thoughts.

Hook the wires up to a magneto and see what happens. Make sure you dial
911 first. It might be wise to have some of your neighbor's kids around,
too. The worse the disaster, the more money you can make off it.

When the cops learn that there is an emergency at hand you may get a
whopping legal settlement like the Lexington 911 call that that was ignored
and the woman was killed.

123.13Cameras, lotsa CAMERAS!!MPGS::MASSICOTTEWed May 25 1994 12:598

    Have at least 3 video cameras going from different angles of
    the suspected blast area, plus one on you with the mag.

    Any TV station will pay for them. You get zilch when thier
    there.
