159.0. "UTP vs. ScTP" by NOTED::16.67.96.117::dfaust (Dennis Faust) Thu Jan 30 1997 11:29

I have a customer that will be undertaking a large campus rewiring and is
pondering whether to use UTP or Screened Twisted pair. My personal ttake on it
is that UTP will work just as well in their environment (offices and labs) as
ScTP, but I have no evidence to support that claim. I also feel that the vast
majority of the installations are done using UTP rather than ScTP, and as such
hardware vendors will develop more options that support UTP than ScTP.
However, once again I have no hard evidence of this.

Are there any white papers on Digital's stand on the UTP vs. ScTP issue.

Dennis,

There is a continuing debate regarding the need for a screened cabling system. I have an excellent paper that I
can fax to you if you would send me your fax No. It goes into detail regarding the performance of screened and
unscreened cable systems. In theory a properly balanced UTP system can perform a well as a screened system. In
any case it is important that the screened system is properly bonded to ground and that ground loops are avoided
or the screened system will not provide any advantage, and could actually be worse then UTP.

The DECconnect system is designed to support both environments at Category 5 levels, so your customer can install
a system to meet his or her needs. It will cost a premium to use ScTP components so careful consideration should
be given to the selection. If the environment is not subjected to high energy noise souces then UTP should do the
job. Our lab testing has shown that a well balance Cat 5 system will support most user environments.

Please send me your fax number and I will forward the article to you.

Regards,

Norm
