1458.0. "Want To Take A Caribbean Cruise?" by NECSC::BARTLETT (Art Bartlett 237-7375) Mon Mar 10 1997 15:11
< < WANT TO TAKE A CRUISE ? > > >
With the addition of many new ships in recent years and still more
to come through 2000, some of us here in the CSC SHR site were thinking
of picking a cruise next winter and getting a group price.
We have generally had good experiences with Royal Caribbean Cruises.
RCCL offers a wide variety of activieies, excusions, and accomodaitons
(including handicapped) really targeted for all ages, but not a "party
boat." There is also a superior quality control program for food and
beverages. Medical care seems to be impressive having used those
resources personelly and having met folks traveling on RCCL so that
they could receive their dialysis treatments.
I have put together a group cruise on Royal Caribbean's Splendour of the
Seas for April 5, 1997 for a very small group of 6. This particular
cruise is a 7-day Southern Caribbean Cruise commencing in San Juan and
porting at Aruba, Curacao, ST Maarten and ST Thomas. I was successful at
requesting and receiving a RCCL group rate. We only looked at run-of-the-
mill cabins, including air:
Categoty 'N' Deck 'A' STD Inside Cabin, list $1949
Category 'H' Deck 'A' Large Outside Cabin, list $2299
The price we finally arrived at with a party of 6 w/3 cabins is:
Category 'N' - 1355.50 per person / $ 2711 per cabin (30.45% off)
Category "H' - 1456.00 per person / $ 5824 per cabin (36.67% off)
Cruise Insurance for a 7-day RCCL cruise is currently at $89/person
(Just revently increased from $79).
So you can see that I spent a total of $9069, including insurance and
air, for 4 perople in two category 'H' cabins and 2 people in one
category 'N' cabin. The list price totalled $13,620, I saved a cool
$4,551 -- but who sails for list price?
>> THE QUESTIONS ARE: what do you think, when should we go, what ship,
what route/dates, is this a bad idea?
>> THOUGHTS: Soke folks don't care to travel as a group -- we're NOT!
We are thinking of purchasing cabins as a group price, beyond that
everyone if 'on their own' from home to back home again.
Do some people want to spend more money to upgrade cabins to say
Category 'D' a delux outside cabin with private veranda and
refrigerator -- list price for 1997 is $2469 /per person?
I strongly suggest that the cruise be out of San Juan and NOT Miami
or Ft Lauderdale. In winter the seas are considerably calmer
starting further South.

1458.1 | Take the outside with veranda | POWDML::VISCONTI | | Tue Mar 11 1997 07:54 | 23 |
| Just one comment, I recently completed a cruise on the Sun Princess
(one of their newer ships) with 6 other couples, we all requested
outside rooms with a veranda. If you are going with an outside room,
then most definitely request one with a veranda, it is well worth the
extra cost, in your case around $150 list (2469 - 2299).
If you should decide to have breakfast (or in our case any meal) in
your room, you have table and chairs on the veranda and I can't tell
you how nice it is especially while cruising.
Simply having a cocktail in the room before/after meals became a real
delight. It also adds alot of space to the room because you don't have
two bodies taking up space if one is on the veranda. Makes the room
seem much larger.
Arriving/Departing from port is much more enjoyable with no crowds on
deck, simply taking in the view from your own room.
This single feature, for us, really made the cruise an overall
experience.
Regards,
Jim

1458.2 | Group Rate is Great | WRKSYS::DENNING | | Mon Apr 14 1997 14:16 | 13 |
| We just sort of did the same thing for next March.
We started with a group of folks and ended up booking 4 cabins on
Celebrity for an 11 night cruise.
Price below included airfare from Boston
Horizon, 11-Night Ultimate Caribbean List=$2595+166 (port) = $2761
What we paid $1596 inlcuding port+airfre (42.19% discount)
Bottom Line is it pays to try and get thr group rate

1458.3 | How many for the group rate? | JUMP4::JOY | Perception is reality | Fri Apr 18 1997 13:39 | 8 |
| Anyone have any idea how many cabins you need to book to get the group
rate? And do they all need to come from the same city? We took a cruise
in Jan. and had 3 cabins, but we each came from a different city. No
one offered us a group rate, although we did get a pretty good discount
anyway by booking about 10 months early.

Hi,
Each time I booked a cruise, for every 10 people (5 rooms) we got a free
room. What we would do is instead of some people going free we would
amortize the total cost over 12 people. I've taken 5 cruises this way,
have always booked the cheapest rooms and the group has been upgraded
2-3 levels 4 out of the 5 cruises. I also always book my cruises 6-9
months in advance.
Each 7 day Carribbean cost between $999-1299 p/p, including air from
Boston after we amortized the cost of 10 people paying over 12 people
going. I've taken Carnival, Royal Carribbean twice, Princess and
Norwegean.
By the way. I have a group of 14 people taking the Boston-Bermuda cruise
on September 7th and am paying $529 p/p plus $169.50 port charges.

| We paid $1326 pp from Boston including port charges for a 7 day cruise
in the Southern Caribbean on Celebrity. So I guess we got a pretty
good deal since this was a cabin in the 3rd category from the top (I
think only suites were higher). And this was without any sort of group
discount.
We used CruiseOne as our cruise agent out of Acton, MA
