1452.0. "Royal Majesty cruise to Bermuda?" by TARKIN::VAILLANCOURT () Thu Jan 30 1997 13:10

    OK, I have a 'cruise' question, since the cruise file is gone.
    Has anyone taken the Royal Majesty 7-day cruise from Boston to Bermuda?
    I'm looking for any comments on it, as we are considering this for
    our honeymoon next May.
    Also, I have never been on a cruise (other than the Odyssey in Boston
    Harbor!), and am told that this is a smaller boat than 'most' cruise
    lines, and that the seas from Boston to Bermuda are much rougher than
    say from Florida to the Carribean. Any comments?
    Any ways to avoid sea-sickness?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
      I've not taken that one, but good friends of mine have and they loved
    it. The ship is quite large, though smaller than some of the new
    "mega-liners" out there.

     As for sea-sickness, there are 3 approaches: pills, shots or bands.
    Pills take a while to work, and don't work on everyone. Shots must be
    administered ahead of time, and usually are for severe cases. For
    milder, or occasional cases, the wrist bands (about $7) seem to help.
    They have a "button" on them that fits in the inner part of the wrist,
    acts by applying constant pressure (sort of like acupuncture, but
    only on the surface). We got our wrist bands at a local boating and
    marine supply store, but they are available elsewhere, including
    mail order.

    enjoy....

1453.2Either way, Bermuda is great!!USAMTS::NETCAD::DREYERI need a vacation!!Fri Jan 31 1997 11:3616
We cruised on the Royal Caribbean's Song of America to Bermuda. I would
recommend this cruise over Royal Majesty's. Royal Majesty docks in St. George,
and stays there for the whole week. Not too much going on there. Song of
America docks in St. George for a couple of days, and then it docks in Hamilton
for a couple of days. It leaves out of N.Y., and "free" bus transportation is
provided.

The seas were very rough from N.Y. to Bermuda. I brought some antivert pills
with me. The trick to these is that they must be taken before seasickness sets
in. I would recommend getting ginger tablets, these are very effective against
motion sickness. I buy them at Walmart.

1453.3meclizine for motion sicknessORION::chayna.zko.dec.com::tamara::eppesNina EppesFri Jan 31 1997 13:0811
I've taken meclizine for potential motion-sickness situations, and it works
great for me. My S.O. and I went on an American Hawaii cruise around the
Hawaiian Islands (duh :-) ) a few years ago. The ship was smallish, and on
one day it was pitching and rolling kind of a lot. We'd taken meclizine and
were able to chow down with impunity. Other passengers looked fairly green!

We first discovered meclizine on a Holland America cruise to Alaska several
years ago. It was what they gave out at the purser's office for motion
sickness. We've been using it ever since.

I've been on the Royal Carribean's cruise to Bermuda. It was on the Royal
Prince which I think has been retired. This boat did not have the active
stabilizers that new boats have. It is also smaller holding maybe 800
passengers instead of the 1500-2500 for the new boats.

Half of our party of was pretty sick and went in for shots at the ships doctor.
I had no problem during the trip. I combatted sea sickness by staying up late
and drinking Tequila.

The seas can be rough out of New York. Once we were a day out of NY the seas
calmed down.

I liked St George, but it is kind of quiet. The shopping is in Hamilton.

    We took the Royal Majesty out of Boston the last sailing in October.
    Its a very nice ship and everything was great. In Bermuda we
    purchased the 3-day unlimited bus passes. I didn't think it was
    a big deal staying in St. Georges vs. Hamlilton unless you're a
    big shopper. I have all the cruise daily things to do & a bunch
    of other stuff on Bermuda. My friend here just booked hers for
    the end of September. I did get seasick on the way out cause of
    the tail end of a storm. And it was rought on the way back, but
    it didn't bother me at all. Different type of sea.

    Write if you'd like any other info.

1453.6rough trip to BermudaMSBCS::LEHMKUHLH, V ii 216Mon Feb 03 1997 14:538
    Took the trip in May (New York to Bermuda) on Norwegian's Windward
    (I think that's what it was. Not my favorite vacation, so I've
    already forgotten it). The trip down was rock 'n' roll the whole
    way. Many, many green people. Coming back wasn't too bad, but
    I suggest you take along one of each of the remedies suggested.
    One of them is bound to work!

    We also were on the last cruise at the end of October. It started out
    smooth enough (you leave in the evening) but the next day got sort of
    choppy. As we crossed the gulf stream and approached Bermuda it got
    better. Same thing on the way back but not as rough. You've got enough
    advise on sea sickness so I won't add to it. This was our first cruise
    and the ship was nice and food plentiful and generally very good. What
    I didn't care for was the full day at sea on the way over and back.
    I would have rather spent the time in Bermuda which we love. The nice
    thing about Royal Majesty is that you go out of BOSTON and that you
    have your hotel room with you all the way. I would not like to go thru
    the hassle of going thru NY, especially on the return. We liked staying
    in St George but this was our third visit to Bermuda. The one thing I
    think that needs improvement, and it's not the cruise line's fault is
    that it takes 2-3 hours for the boat to clear customs once you reach
    Boston and no one can get off until everyone is cleared. Next time we
    will fly down in two hours and stay at the SurfSide Cottages and stay
    a FULL 6-7 days.

1453.9Temperature in Bermuda?WMOIS::JETTEFri May 09 1997 14:5516
    We are taking the Royal Majesty out of Boston to Bermuda in just 2
    short weeks. YES!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone know what the average
    temperature is in Bermuda at this time of year? Will I need a jacket
    for the evenings? How far out do you have to be from Boston before it
    becomes hot enough to swim? Boston can still be very cool over
    Memorial Day weekend.

1453.10you have been warnedMSBCS::LEHMKUHLH, V ii 216Tue May 13 1997 18:565
    Well, I took the trip out of NYC at this time last year. On
    the way back we had the first day out that was warm enough to mess around
    out in the pool. Otherwise it was cold and stormy until we
    got to Bermuda and most of the way home. Be sure you are equipped
    for mal de mer. There were a lot of green people on my trip!

For those taking the Royal Majesty this summer...

Last week I saw on the news an interview with the ships captain. I don't
recall his name, but I recognized him as the same captain who was on our
Panama Canal Cruise on the Oceanbreeze (all owned by the same company).

My wife and I found him to be the most friendly and easy going ships officer
of any cruise we've been on. Spoke with him a few times early on, ended up at
his table for dinner and then, once transiting the canal, we were invited to
the bridge and observe the transit from there (best seats on the ship). What
a party we had up there, captain opened a bar tab and and we had a hell of
a time (two other couples were also invited up).

I would urge anyone to feel very comfortable talking to this captain.

    Just returned from this trip last week. Had a great time. The ship
    is very new and clean. The food and service was very good as well.
    However, we did prefer Royal Carribean's Song of America cruise to
    Bermuda over this one. Of course you have to go to New York for that
    one.
