Are you sure about this address ? It's should start with 08-00-2b...
and what makes you this is the "bogus" address ?
The error ?54 means there is no supporting host answering the printer's
boot request. It is not the hardware problem. You need to check the
supporting host configuration. If you change the controller board, you
need to continue use old board's Ethernet address ROM or change the
supporting host's boot configuration.

Providing your information, you got very poor tech suppport suggestion.
If they understand the ?54, the first suggestion is to check the supporting
host or network configuration, not to swap the hardware parts.

470.2 | At least the LPS32 can count from 1 to 12 | ODIXIE::GUGLIELMO | | Mon Jan 27 1997 08:06 | 17 |
| I'm sure they're getting an e-net adrs of 12-34-56-78-9A-BC, on post.
This is due to some kind of hardware problem, and causing the ?54
fault. Somebody told me they've seen this before if the e-net chip on
the controller is put in backwards, but then the chips smokes/pops.
They've got another LPS32, next to the inoperable one, set up the same
way, and working fine. The ?54 error is due to the bad e-net adrs the
LPS32 is sending to the host. A new controller w/ a new e-net chip that
was sent to them didn't fix the problem, so I don't think tech
support's suggestion of trying the backplane/motherboard was a bad
idea.
Also, you answered you're own question: - the e-net adrs should start
w/ 08-00-2B, that's why 12-34-56-78-9A-BC is a bad one, and a hardware
problem.
anybody wanna fly to Switzerland?

470.3 | some ideas to try | CSCMA::SMITH | | Wed Jan 29 1997 15:48 | 20 |
| you say there's another lps32 next to this one, as a troubleshooting
method you might putting the bad controller, e-net chip included into
the good printer. Of course there is always a danger in that, something
might be blowing something. But if your at the end of your rope, this
would tell you if it's in the print engine, the controller or the software.
If the bad controller and address come up in the good printer, you
will know both the controller, chip and software are good.
It would have to be in the e-net cabling or the printer. If they
don't come up, there's a chance the bad printer is blowing boards.
Trying the good printers controller with enet chip in the bad printer
may be a bit more dangerous, you probably don't want to try that.
Try another test would be to put a loopback connector on the bad
printer to see if it then displays the correct address, if not, the
problem is in the printer, it it does there's something wrong with the
net connection (either way you'll still get ?54 but you can read the
address to see if it's corrected)

470.4 | FTM/LANCE test-same problem/address & ?54 | ODIXIE::GUGLIELMO | | Wed Jan 29 1997 20:22 | 10 |
| I'm sorry I didn't mention that I instructed the VAR on how to run
the FTM LANCE 1,4,6 test w/ the DESTA terminated. He relayed the
instructions to his customer in Switzerland, and was told that after
the test was run, it came back w/ the same 12-34-56-78-9A-CB & ?54.
Unfortunately I can only go on what the VAR is told by his customer in
Switzerland. ??? I suggested he just have the bad LPS32 returned.
-I thought maybe somebody had seen this problem before-thanks for the
assistance

470.5 | IT WAS A BAD MEMORY OPTION BD.!!!!! | ODIXIE::GUGLIELMO | | Thu Mar 06 1997 07:37 | 8 |
| FWIW: This problem of the bad e-net adrs. of 12-34-56-78-9A-BC was due
to a bad printserver memory option bd. P/N: 54-23796-02 ???
Apparently the h.w. e-net adrs. gets loaded into a certain area of this
memory, and it wasn't! I couldn't find any info about this part though,
looking in STARS or QRL ??? Found nothing !?!!?!?!
Feel free to comment.

470.6 | some info on the plus upgrade | CSCMA::SMITH | | Thu Mar 06 1997 08:21 | 12 |
| If your stockroom doesn't stock 54-23796-02 (memory bd option with
handle) try 54-23796-01 (memory bd option without handle), I thought
the -01 was the part they were going to stock.
This memory option makes the lps32 into an lps32+. Customers can order
a plus or upgrade their existing lps32 (or lps20 turbo) with lps3x-ua.
It is customer installable. For more info try looking in TIMA for
EK-TP232-IN, this is the only guide I know of that covers this option.
(Turbo Printserver 20 and PrintServer 32 Printers Memory Installation
Instructions).
