When Hunter was last in Sommerville, he did a COMPLETE Terrapin. There is
something special about Hunter out there playing solo - just him, his guitar
and the music.

Gotta agree with this -- I went out & bought a Hunter CD (Box of Rain?)
on the say-so of another noter, and Promontory was outstanding.
As was another tune he wrote alone... And "Space".

| From Hunter's road journal - 3/6 12:30am
Well, that's more like it! The monitors were sumptuous, therefore the
house sound was great, Jeff being a maestro - nothing like having a fellow
singer-songwriter at the board who knows the problems of the form from the
standpoint of personal experience. I was able to weave brand new threads
and textures and have a satisfying musical experience.
The only fly in the ointment was a dozen or so rowdies who infested the
quiet spaces with yips, hoots and comments. I didn't let it force me to
turn up the volume to drown them out, just decided to live with it. You
think they'd give a live performer the same courtesy they
give a motion picture, but there you go. It is, of course, only an
excess of enthusiasm. They don't understand the difference in dynamic
between a solo performer and a roaring rock band. More of that, it seems,
than in the old days. Decided not to unroll the Terrapin Suite in that
environment, much as I'd have liked to play it in the House of Blues.
In the balance, I gained back the energy I lost last night - and
more. The only way I could have played better would be to practice more,
and I practice as much as I can - so that's just a question of keeping at
it. I dare to play a number of solos, because onstage soloing is the only
way to really learn the form. If I screw up, I screw up - but often I
surprise myself. Don't go for speed, just feelings - open up and
provide a clear path for them. Those are the moments that make doing this
worthwhile. The direction of growth.
OK - I better post this and pack. Have to travel at 8:30 tomorrow
morning. On to D.C

ongoing
discussion So why tour now?
on arts &
entertainment ``It's one of those times when you start
thinking - man, I've got to get out of
here,'' Hunter, 55, says from his home. ``I
think it's critical for me to get in gear,
get on the road and lead some kind of a
dynamic existence before I just start
moving on to old age and can't recoup.''
Hunter is loath to discuss his new songs
until people hear them (he has no new album
yet), but he's asked if they're heavy in
the way that some of his Dead tunes were.
``Oh God, yes,'' he says. ``It's the only
way I know, man. Heavy is my middle name.''
And look for the 1997 Hunter to have more
confidence on stage, he says. ``The main
difference is that my voice is obeying me
in a way it never did before. And I think
my guitar playing is a whole lot better
than it used to be. I've really honed in on
that. And I have a new sound system.
Musically, I expect this tour to be miles
beyond what I did last time.''
Hunter jokes that touring is ``doing that
kid's stuff again,'' but to make matters
seem more adult, he's bringing his wife and
8-year-old daughter, Kate, out with him.
``When I first talked to my wife about a
tour, she said, `Oh, you don't want to do
that.' You know, I had programmed her well
over the years with all the wonderful
reasons not to do it - like family
solidity, raising my daughter, and being an
at-home father rather than an on-the-road
father. But I started rapidly sketching the
other possibilities. Since we're
home-schooling Kate, we don't need to be
tied down. I said that part of her
education could be traveling. ... And [my
wife] is from England and likes to get back
there once in a while, so I also got a tour
of Europe ahead for May and June.''
Hunter was asked to join this summer's
Furthur Festival - the post-Dead event
organized by surviving Dead singer Bob Weir
- but, after much thought, he declined. ``I
know that I would be valued on that tour
and could fill a certain place in it, but I
truly want to put a year into development
entirely on my own terms, and see just how
much of this I want to do. I want to
develop my own thread rather than joining
someone else's thread at this time.''
All of which leads to talk about Garcia,
his departed comrade. ``Put it this way,
he's not coming back and life goes on,''
says Hunter. ``A lot of people are not
going to be satisfied until he comes back.
And I expect that some are going to remain
dissatisfied with whatever else is offered
them.''
So what was his opinion of the Dead's
disbanding after Garcia's death? ``It was
absolutely the right decision,'' he says.
``Just think of the Grateful Dead going out
without Jerry Garcia. What are people going
to say? They're going to say, `Well, that's
pretty good music, but it ain't the same.'
It would always have a negative comparison
- and these guys don't need that.
``There's no Grateful Dead without Jerry
Garcia and that's that,'' he adds.
When asked to name some of his favorite
songs written with Garcia, he says, ``I
hate to even get started, because it's like
saying which of your kids do you like best,
you know? In different contexts I like all
of them. I'm particularly pleased with the
last one we did, `The Days Between.' I felt
that was the beginning of a whole new tack
on composition. It's a very sophisticated
piece of music, and I felt that Jerry had
moved the next step up in the mastery of
this whole forum. I miss the chance to work
with him on that higher musical
development.''
The Dead are no more, but will live on,
Hunter says, in a series of
restaurant/nightclub/theat er/audio-visual
rooms called Terrapin Station. The first is
planned for San Francisco in 1999. A
replica of the Dead's ``Wall of Sound''
speaker system will adorn the front
entrance. Inside will be rooms with Dead
music playing, along with light shows, a
tape room, performance theat er, and a
``rhythm devil'' room for visitors to
``just go and lie around and beat on
drums.'' (Dead bassist Phil Lesh has been a
creative consultant, but just how much
involvement the remaining band members will
have is still being determined.)
As for some of the young acts in line to
replace the Dead, Hunter admits he likes
the Vermont band Phish, widely considered
to be the heir apparent. ``They seem to
have their heads screwed on straight and
their music is very enjoyable,'' he says.
``I admit to only having listened to the
one double live tape they put out, but I
enjoyed it very much.''
When told that some people think Phish
could use a good lyricist because some of
their songs are too lightweight, Hunter
quickly comes to their defense.
``Oh, now, come on. They're doing fine. Not
everything has to be heavy and loaded with
significance the way the Grateful Dead
stuff is,'' Hunter says. ``There's a place
for a much lighter approach, too.''

Globe on 03/07/97.

If you can't find one there, then you're an elitist beer drinker :-)
Anyway, Mike's is probably where I will end up, unless Jim and I decide to

| short show. 1st set was 1/2 hour. 20 min break.
second set about 50 mins, encore about 10 mins.
hunter wasn't kidding when he said he likes to keep the venue
cool. they had the air conditioning on last nite!!
somerville theatre is sooooo cool. (in more ways than one ;-)
the show was grate. like watching jerry's brother. the one with
all the literary talent and little musical talent ;-) ;-)
actually, he did a grate job. guitar playing was pretty good. he
talked to the crowd a couple of times. the crowd shouted out
requests and one-liners between songs. a couple of good laughs.
most were respectful during the songs. the most annoying were the
shushers between songs. when someone would shout something,
they'd get shushed. i would've shushed the shushers, but i saw
and endless spiral there ;-)
mike's is an ok place, for a pizza joint. lotsa bottled beers.
service was so-so. food was so-so. but, it was in out of the
cold. met cath sloan there with her friend. had beers and a bite
waiting for debess and guntis. mnelson was in and out trying to
get himself a ticket. and, indeed as always he was successful.
saw tons of familiar faces inside. saw the da ve wanna-be in that
8th row seat with brother tim. saw bruce mandaro and some friends
grom groton. met bobo outside. finally got to meet tms!
the toilets in the theater are archaic. worst than that. the no
smoking law inside is strictly enforced. you gotta go outside
between set. they give you a wrist band to get back in (in
addition to your stub).
forgot most of the setlist %-} box of rain -> bunch of songs ->
ripple. am i close???? ;-) no terrapin. tonite, i bet. hunter
seems to like the venue. last there 7 years ago, he said.
a cupla-two-or-tree tapers der me. also, looked like a pro video
crew. seeral cameras and monitors.
i liked his new guitar. the set was cool. a window-like thing in
the back, with white drapes that they changed colors using the
lights. a bar stool, next to a table with a lamp on it on the
right side of the stage. and another table with some equipmnet on
it on the other side. to large monitors and some electronic toy
peddles. him and a mike. scary way to perform, imo. i kept
squinting my eyes, hoping to catch a glimpse of jerry. i think i
saw him once ;-) but the guitar playing brough me back ;-) ;-)
kinda wish i didn't let reilly talk me into going both nites. not
a fun nite to be travelling. oy. almost as bad as the march
johnny cash show last rite, ey bobo ;-) 'cept, that nite i made
leblanc drive!! ;-)

3/13 BOSTON
Just back from Somerville Theater after a very good feeling show.
Realized after the 3rd song that this house won't rock, but it rolls
nice, so I readjusted my set list and played for the energy the house
provided. Pulled a few tunes out of the hat I didn't expect to play,
though I'd done them in sound check just to avoid doing items in the
current repertoire. Don't like to play tunes I intend to perform just to
get sound balances - they want my whole involvement.
Easy Wind sounded like a tray of dropped dishes on the first attempt I
made to rock out. That's all the notice I needed. Cut tempos back on
most everything after that and found the sweet spot of the house. Took me
years to learn: always play the stage you're on, not the stage you might
wish it to be. Things will work out. Kate saw me perform for the first
time tonight. She's just so proud to see her dad up there she almost

| a bunch of disconnected thoughts...
Yea, not so bad driving as the night Johnny Cash played Avalon (of course
I'm saying that and it's 1:30).
But it's
only bad on the way in ... the way out - you got all night to get home safe :)
I remember Johnny and June were *amazed* they had a full house when the
weather was sooo sh*tty.
The show: Was a nice show I really liked it. I thought the first set was
short and not so hot. Now, after reading the thing you just posted, I
figured it out. He was disgussted with the early portion, figured out
how it should sound, got it down pat, and then took off to recompose and
start afresh for the 2nd set which was (in my opinion of course) a very
good set. There.
As far was what was played - in no order/set:
Keys to the rain (with a bit of La Bamba)
Standing on the Moon (very very very excellent and emotional)
Franklin's Tower (loved it!)
Mr. Charlie
Box of Rain (opener...tough opener)
Easy Wind
Mason's Children
Brown Eyed Women
Shelter from the Storm
Sugaree
Ripple (right???)
Boys in the Barroom (2nd and last encore and definately where I'd
rather hang and see hunter)
Musta Been the Roses
New Speedway
Dire Wolf
I can't remember any more....and all that is totally jumbled and
incomplete.
A fun time for me...
I got the Boys in the Barroom- ALWAYS love that tune. No Promontory
Rider though - that's tonight J. No Terrapin - .....
Saw Hunter's wife and kid there too.

Seeing Hunter last night was very great! I went because Da ve
wrote up a bunch of reasons when I asked, 'why would someone go?'
ie. to hear the songs, to pay respects. I didn't expect for it to
be such a spiritual thing.. it WAS like seeing Jerry's brother.
I thought Hunter played pretty well and I like his voice... he does
a great Dylan too, harmonica and all.
Mostly I loved hearing some favorites in a new way, sort of the raw
versions of Box of Rain, Ripple, Standing on the Moon.
I'd see him again. I was was embarrassed about some of the yelling
out from the audience, really foolish stuff coming out of peoples
mouths.
Fun time. Nice to meet up with Jay & Co., Debess etc.

I really enjoyed seeing Hunter last night. Very mellow show for the
most part. SOTM was nice, but I sure missed Jerry ;^(. Loved Ripple!
I thought the show was too short. I could've dug a few mo tunes. The
hecklers didn't bother me in the least. As a matter a fact, I thought
the were fairly funny. "FREEBIRD!" "Do something sick!" "No do
something well" Hunter seemed to take it in stride. The shushers were
more annoying to me.

Cathy, i am SOOOOOOO GLAD you went and dug it... kind of ironic
that after we spoke about all the reasons to go, that you got to
check it all out and i ended up missing it... but hey, the wheel
keeps turning and sometimes that's just what happens...
but i gotta tell you, it made me smile to read your note... i'm glad
you went and that my bit of gentle persuasion proved beneficial... :^)
hugs to you!!

If someone wants a tape of the Friday night Hunter show, the
guy I gave my front-row-balcony-seats up for swears he'll fill
a dat or analog tape for me if I send it to him. I'm not
really interested, but I'll call the guy if someone wants to
seed a tree or something. He should also have a soundboard
tape, since the soundboard guy came up and promised him one
if he wouldn't disturb their mike (hanging over the balcony)
during the show whilst doing their own taping.
Great hanging out with Jolls and Reilly before the show.

the *> Not sure what this was but not only did it sounds 'sick'
it sounded like 'sh*t' They way the soundman brought up the monitors
so loud on stage it got nothing but a buzz. You think that was
on purpose? I'd only hope the rest of us paying customers wouldn't
have to sit thru that just to satisfy heckler.
The "boys is in the Barroom" is always a capella.

| >2 things -
i got the setlist from rec.music.gdead
all the notations were the poster's.
well, we made the trip in on friday too.
i was regretting letting reilly talk me into going both days.
the weather bit the big one. the ride from mko to groton was
scary. after snowing all day, it turned to freezing rain just as
i left merrimack. brutal icy drive with ice building up on the
windsheild.
but, the ride from groton to slumerville wuzint bad at all. all
rain. and the temps had risen just enough to keep things wet but
not icy. uneventful ride in. pahked in the same lot, on day st.
went over to johnnyD's for brews. nice place, but kinda small.
must get rilly crowded on a friday nite. met tom w. there. had
eats and treats and headed into the show.
we had seats upstairs this time. last row of the mezz. we opted
to use a piece of stairs off to the side for standing and
dancing. met some tourheads. yup. heads are touring w/hunter. met
a guy from ohio. went to philly, dc, boston and then to ny. he
said there were quite a few touring. they all came in a side
entrance at somerville. wedged the door with a tuna sandwich! he
said hunter had sent out tickets in philly. it was kinda nice to
see heads dancing in the corner upstairs, like you find them in
the corners of the gahdin.
i thought hunter put on a better show friday. he seemed more
relaxed and comfortable. the crowd shouted out between songs,
like the nite before. and, again people were shushing them. it
didn't seem to bother hunter.
the first set lasted about 40 mins. i haven't seen the setlist
and can't recall the first set. the highlight of the two shows
(for me) was the end of the second set on friday. in response to
a shout from the crowd for "SPACE" hunter started drumming on his
guitar and taped an electronic loop, which he used to jam/space.
i sounded pretty cool, actually. then slid into wharf rat
followed by promontory rider (good call bobo ;-) then ended the
set with a very nice stella blue. choked me up. then came back
for the encore with an excellent days bewteen, ripple, boys in
the barroom (A capella, of course ;-) pissah show. and, it
wasn't nearly as cold upstairs as it was thursday nite.

| Hunter in Somerville 3/13
first thing on entering the theatre you are hit visually with the set.
It looks simple enough, elegant with 3 ornate old wood tables, one
with an old fashioned lamp and one with a vase of longstemmed roses. And
in back, what looks like draperies hanging in a window to the floor.
But, it's not that simple...with every song, the lighting changes and the
screen in the background changes color, and the draping fabric changes
to a different color. Very elegant effect.
The Somerville Theater itself is quite elegant. As your eyes gaze
upward, you are treated to a beautifully painted ceiling, comparable to
some of those beautifully painted Victorians in San Francisco -
multicolors and ornate patterns. Carved wood all around. Seated in a
balcony overlooking the stage, the fair maidens - Hunter's family.
As soon as I got to my seat, I found I was sitting right next to Scott
Abbot and Meri and right in back of tms and Mike Rogers...I love when
that happens!
I have never heard Robert Hunter sing before. This was the first time.
And everything about it was a surprise! His voice was not what I was
expecting...completely different completely better! I loved his voice!
I was also completely enthralled with my reaction to him singing his
songs that I had always associated as Jerry's songs. And there was never
a point where I didn't feel that, as familiar-sounding as they were,
that these songs are truly Hunter's songs! (duh) He has a definate style
that comes through in all of them - and the style is so tied with
storytelling tradition, that these songs are just naturals for this kind
of singing and playing. Naturally! It had sort of a Celtic leaning, I
felt. Just perfect! Actually, there was one point where I had strong
Jerry association with a song - with Standing on the Moon - it gave me
some chills.
The best part of the first set for me was the last 3 songs. Things
finally seemed to settle down nicely. _It Must Have Been the Roses_ I
think was started out with a long intro, Robert seated on a stool.
_Mason's Children_ felt whimsical and had me smiling and dancing in my
seat. _Brown Eyed Women_ was accompanied by guitar and harmonica!
Another surprise! Nice.
A 20 minute break outside, no smoking inside the old wooden theater. The
theater empties out into the street, where there is no police presense
that I noticed. Ran into Cath. Nice break!
The highlights of the 2nd set for me were Dylan's _Shelter from the
Storm_ and beautiful beautiful _Mountains of the Moon_. But the song I
liked the most was _Keys to the Rain_. I realize I've heard that song
before, but never knew who it was singing it. I loved zipping in and out
of the different moods in that song, the quick tempo changes back and
forth.
I can't remember what song it was, but there was one that is played
against some rhythm that I'm not sure how he did it, but he played it,
sampled it?, then played it back and then played -with- it, and then
slid back into it real time - that part was fun to listen and to dance to.
There were lots of rowdy requests, between songs at least!, but that was
the mood of the night. I felt all giggly too!
I really enjoyed the show - glad to have finally heard the man who wrote
the words singing them with heart.

read in Hunter's Road Journal, when he sang _Stella Blue_
(was it in Somerville/NY) - he forgot the bridge, so he
made up another verse on the spot - and then sang the
bridge...
I don't know if I would have been able to stand hearing
him sing that song, without falling to pieces...that song
still (always will?) hits pretty close to the bone.

" I think it would be a shame to see an idea predicted on providing a

recipe is not entirely what you'd have it be. "

| "...not ENTIRELY what you'd want it to be..."
We all went/go for a combination of several things.
I never bought the idea that there wasn't a party involved, and I don't
think the boyz did either. That was just some necessary PR that had to
be done to remind everyone that *THE* most important thing was/is the
music...not the only thing, just the most important. Personally, I
*NEED* that interaction between heads and myself and the music. )That's
why I thank Hale-Bop that we out here have Shakedown Street and this
file!!!.) ANd I think Hunter realizes this need with some of us
rfb_jonesin for a dead-related show

| The *whole* idea was not 'just' the music, imo. It was when
you'd see friends from all over again, a time of gatherings,
parties, and overall a real good time.
The music was the cake. The social aspect was the icing.
