559.0. "When you're happy... when you're sad" by TEPTAE::WESTERVELT () Wed Feb 26 1997 12:19

I have a question for y'all. Are you more apt to listen to the Dead
when you're happy or when you're sad?

Personally, I've found I'm only interested when I'm happy. The music
just doesn't resonate when I'm down in the dumps. It makes me feel
like I'm really missing out on something.

Or, are there some songs you like to listen to when you're down,
that lift you up? Or some songs that are particularly fun when
    you're feeling great about life?

Dunno if this is a stupid question, but it's something I've wondered
    about.

If I'm in a good mood, songs like Goin Down the Road or Eyes bring it
    to a higher level.

If I'm in a bad mood, songs like Goin Down the Road or Eyes bring it to
    a higher level...

    Hummmm....same thing I guess. ;-)

    Depends on the song.

i find it doesn't really matter much... when i'm happy and i listen
it's easier to ride the tunes to higher places and sort of relive
a snapshot in time... if i'm sad, it's usually kind of comforting
in a way... sort of a reminder that nothing is forever and for each
down time there's an up as well... and often, i find myself feeling
better after a time... a different ride to be sure, but ending in
    a better place still...

so my answer to "do you tend to listen when you're happy or
when you're sad?" would have to be "yes!"... :^)

    yes!

LAst August I listened to the dead everyday and I was sad every freekin day
I cried alot of days and after the initial shock, it was the songs that
made me cry, not the death....but I still listened....

nah, not a dumb question at all, IMHO. My listening preferences do go in
cycles. What songs, and who I listen to, are definitely related to my mood.
Yes, there are certain tunes I like to listen to when I'm up (Death Don't)
and when I'm down (Eyes). Or is it Eye's when I'm up, Death Don't when I'm
down, and Dark Star when I'm sideways? :-))))

When I'm down, Wharf Rats help me feel like someone else is in these shoes too.
12-2-73 in particular - Jerry has such a mournful tone in his playing,
especially near the end.

Sometimes nothing other than long spacey jams, like the 10/68 stuff, will do.

Sometimes I give up on the Dead for a bit and go off on a Dylan kick for a
while (haven't lately), or Mozart ("up" music) or Beethoven (definitely
stormier). Certain Dylan albums I've found very helpfull when in a
disintegrating relationship: Blonde on Blonde is excellent for this.

Another thing. When I'm down, dead tunes offer some relief.

I was suffering through heartbreak and dismay a couple years
ago...and lines like "don't give it up, got an empty cup" or
"broken heart, don't feel so bad, you ain't got half of what you
thought you had" or "a selfish heart is trouble, but a foolish heart is
worse" really helped (as someone else said) to make you feel your not
    the only one.

> Are you more apt to listen to the Dead
> when you're happy or when you're sad?

When I'm down I tend to go for known quantities & sure things -- if it's
the Dead, a favorite show. Exactly what depends on why... If
romantically leveled n' left for dead, ballads and/or drinking songs
(find me the nearest honky tonk bar...). If stressed out from work and/or
kids, something &%(&(*& loud (find me the nearest sensory deprivation tank).

I agree about Dylan Blonde on Blonde (and Mozart, and Beethoven) -- music
fans probably accumulate resonant musico-sensory experiences... I can
call up hundreds of touchstones for various moods. Depending on where I
am, I don't even have to play them, I can replay them internally... Take
Clarence Carter's "Slip Away" -- guess the mood for that 8) . 60s Soul
music and post WW2 country music afford many escapes & diversions...

I agree about Comes a Time... I've turned to the Other One > Comes a Time
on Hundred Year Hall a couple of times.

When I'm up, I'm more ready for the new & uncharted, listening that
may take patience and multiple listens... - JayC.

good stuff!!!!, but rage music???? CRASH is one of the mellowest DMB

re: .18 Toby....try a "Good Lovin" or maybe a "Truckin" or even
the Dead's rendition of "Take Me to the River". I kinda
like those for starters and there are many others as well...
just gotta find the right version amongst the countless
tapes out there. Hey, didn't I send you a mostly Brent
tape a while back??? As I recall, there were some pretty
            hot tunes there.

re: The topic......I'm sorry to say that the only music I've been
listening to since God knows when has been the Dead. I really
don't put anything else on...only when I have to ACCOMIDATE
guests (like MOM) who prefer something else. It's kinda wierd
to look at my four applecrates full of records from various
artists like Led Zep, Lynard Skynard, Fleetwood Mac, Outlaws,
CSN&Y,Jean-luc Ponty, Spyro Gyra, Nat King Cole, Allman Bros.,
Blondie, Peter Frampton, etc., etc., etc. and all I listen to
are the Dead tapes I've aquired over the years. I guess you

OK wise guy....yep Debess, strangely, I *DO* remember that Sunday (see
Petert!!) I woke up, fell outa bed, dragged a comb...err wait,
different story...I woke up that Sunday with a rippin hangover and
visison still imparied from the previous nites Shakedown gig. I was
makin myself some coffee and a fried ham sandwich whilst chewin on a
bone when this strange sensation overcame me. Not only did the hair on
my neck stand up, but my disheveled hair, still in the previous nites
9" pony-tail, literally stood up on end and got caught in the freakin
ceiling fan! The fan started twisting and turning me around, the bone
flew from my mouth into the hot skillet with the greasy ham in it and
the whole thang ignited, exploded, and woke up Patty and the dogs,
who started howling at the top of her voice (thought that piece was gonna
be about the dogs, didn't ya??) for the dogs to SHUT THE F UP! Meanwhile
the dogs came into the kitchen, saw me suspended from the ceiling by my
hair by the fan, and commenced to eating the burnt ham off of the floor
since my twisting and turning had knocked the skillet off the stove.
I have since forgotten about this but at the time *KNEW* there was
something weird and psychic about this whole experiance. But I probably
forgot it after chasing the dogs around the house trying to get my peice
    of burnt ham back....

    So thanks alot Debess....
