542.0. "Next from the Vault [series]" by HELIX::CLARK () Tue Aug 27 1996 18:57

This is probably common knowledge, but just in case...

Supposedly it's been confirmed by David Gans that the next vault release,
presumably in the Vault (as opposed to Dick's Picks) series, is 3/24/90...
with filler (??) from another date.

Set list for 3/24/90 follows. - JayC.

I didn't catch a release date.

According to the (speculative) every-3-mos. release pattern I noted for
Dick's Picks, either a Dick's Pick or Vault should be materializing any
day now...

(Btw, I'm going to keep mentioning the idea of a Dick's Picks subscription
series to GDM each time I call...) - JayC.

This is great news, 3-24-90 was one of the top three shows I saw in
person. Floor seats smack in the tapers section and having Owsley try
to peddle a belt buckle to me during the break enhanced the experience,
but the band was on that night. I remember looking around at the
crowd, then having my head snapped around and the hairs on the back of
my neck stand up when I heard them nail the opening of "Loser."

Wonder what the 'mystery filler' will be?

Maybe that missing scarlet>fire...?? missing from any vault/dp release
that is....

Checking the set lists there was one from the cap center on 3-21-90.

Curios about that and also curious about the selection of this show.
I guess I view this as an attempt to "satisfy" the masses and get one
out from each "era". I was at the show but would rather see something
else released. :) Opening with ole' Brent at his misogynous best
seems a curious pick for Dick.

Yeah. It was a good show, but I certainly didn't think it was smokin
rippin hot.

The Hartford stealth show would have been a more appropriate release.

Even Foxboro 90 which went in record books with the crank out double
encore. It also had the I Will Take You Home if thats what they were
looking for. I also remember a flawless Buffulo 1990 show with a
Sugar Mag->Scarlet opener....f'in roasting, piping, smoking, raging
hot!

The opener was rilly "Let the Good Times Roll."

The '88 Hampton shows had a great Scarlet>Fire, with Jerry belting out
some "woah"s and "ooh"s. A combination of those two shows would work
well. "Stir It Up" wouldn't make the cut, though.

Technically, Dick does only the 2-tracks, for mail-order release only...
While Lesh & Cutler take charge of the multitracks, for regular commercial
release. Right? (Just checking that I understand Dick's charter here...)

There's an interesting account of 3/24/90 in Deadbase IX I believe. - JayC.

there's also some great accounts written by DECheads in

Well, if I'm correct about Dick's charter...

Lesh & Cutler are into just about everything else stamped "Dead", I believe.
This includes the Vault series (1ftV > 2ftV > Hundred Year Hall > ...).
And other supposedly forthcoming compilations of live stuff.

The Vault & Dick series(es) postdate Without a Net -- but Lesh & Cutler
worked on that too. (Corrections welcomed.) - JayC.

re .22

You are confused. :-)

"Don't Need Love" -- "I don't need love/And I sure as hell don't need
you."

"Good Time Blues" aka "Never Trust A Woman" -- "Never trust a woman/Who
wears her dress too tight." No misogyny there, just good practical
advice. :-)

"Let The Good Times Roll" aka LTGTR -- "Get in the groove and let the
good times roll." was the opener, I listened to a tape last night.

The Hartford show was good and long, but very laid back. I especially
liked the drumming on Eyes. 3-24-90 was much higher energy and had a
standout "Loser" with Jerry extending his solo and the crowd going
nuts. This show was taped for "Without A Net" and "One More Saturday
Night" made it onto that CD. I expect the release will sound similar.

I'll listen to my copy of the Copps show again, but I remember it being
mediocre to lousy. The attempt at "Hey Jude" was especially awful.

Ok Jamie, thanks for setting me straight - However one last bit of confusion

My pick goes to LTGTR - an opener. I doubt they ever opened a show with
Good Time Blues or really any Brent song...did they? Gotcha, it's a
plot, everyone is trying to confuse me.

I did look at Tour by Tour and it listed "good time blues". I don't

How many Hartford shows were there that week? I went to the Hartford

542.29those special stealth showsSTAR::64881::DEBESSThingsWe'veNevrSeenSeemFamiliarFri Aug 30 1996 10:5331
there were 2 (stealth) shows in Hartford.

that whole stealth scene was soooooo funny. rumors spread
like wildfire. My brother-in-law was living in Hartford at
the time - and I would hear rumors about tickets going on
sale at the Civic Center box office on Saturday, so I'd call
him and ask him to get tickets - and he would go down there
and wait in line with hundreds (really) of other people that
heard the rumor. But the tickets weren't really going on
sale at all that day. He said he had a great time waiting in
line with the Deadheads anyways.

Then, when they -did- announce the tickets going on sale, they
announced it with like 2 hours of lead time. Everyone I could
think of to call in Hartford couldn't get there, or I couldn't
get ahold of them. Fortunately, my brother has a job where he
drives around the city alot and he heard it on the radio and
zipped over to the Civic Center and got us tickets.

Those shows were real special to me and Guntis. It was almost
exactly the anniversary of our 1st date together - in the town
where we met - doing exactly what we had done on our first date -
and that year marked our being together with eachother exactly
half our lives.

I remember that the 1st show really set the mood for our
anniversary feelings. Lots of great slow dances. :-)

re .35

I'm not Tim, but I'd like to raid his beer fridge.

The shows were recorded on a 24 track recording machine. Simply put,
each recording track is for a single mike on stage, so you'd have one
for Jerry's vocals, one for his guitar, and so on. In the studio,
these are combined and mixed down to two tracks, left and right, for
your stereo.

The recording part is relatively easy and cheap, but mixing it down to
a releasable stereo version takes expensive studio and engineering
time. Since it was mixed down for "Without A Net," 3-24-90 was already
in the can and won't take much effort to release.

Some insider dubbed a copy of the final mix of the show and it's in
circulation among tapers. I just have an analog audience copy and will
gladly shell out for a CD.

I was gonna comment on this show which I was at, but couldn't compare it
to Albany because I wasn't there. Then I remember why. Timmy (my son) was
born on 4/16/90, shortly after Hartford... in some ways it seems so recent,
but then Timmy is in his 2nd week of 1st grade already - yikes! Where does
the time go ? I remember getting the best seats in the house at the
Hartford CC, 1st row balcony in the back - Mindy was *very* pregnant and
those seats worked great.

> 3/24/90

Here's another good reason for releasing it: CD's seem so much more reliable
and convenient than DAT tape... and there are a few more cd players than
dat players out there.

OK, I dug out my Hamilton 3-21-90 tapes and gave it a listen. This was
a great show, and the "Half Step" is the WaN version. I haven't found
my 3-22-90 tapes yet, but I'll give it another chance.

I also re-listened to 3-24-90 and still feel that it was the best show
of the tour. The only weak song is "Stella Blue," and it's only weak
by comparison to the rest of the tape. The "Watchtower" is probably
the best version I've heard (but 75% of the versions of this song get
tossed out due to Dan Healy's sb games).

Does anyone have a rumored release date?

Sheesh. Well, the latest info-byte from the gdead newsgroup is to watch
dead.net (don't think I've been there).

They'll be addressing the "3rd" vault "rumor" (you'll remember the
reported source was David Gans...), and announcing a 6th Dick's Pick.

So, at least a Dick's Picks 6 is nigh.

I'm guessing 3/24/90 is too, because the source for the Oct. 29th release
date (supposedly) was an Arista spokesperson. Oh well, wati & see. - JayC.

Well, while vaultheads watch http://grateful.dead.net for enlightenment...
A couple of tidbits from the gdead newsgroup:

- Steve Silberman says the song title "Mind Left Body Jam" is a Deadbase
invention, and some other name (Baron von Tollbooth jam...?) will be
used when it comes out in a vault release. In the meantime, Phil and
Dick jokingly refer to it as "Mud Love Buddy".

- Before 3/24/90 Knickerbocker, the rumored next_vault_release was
Englishtown 9/3/77 [or perhaps Binghamton 11/6/77]. As these would
probably be Dick's Picks, who knows, could still be true.

I recently got a tape of 9/3/77 but would be pleased as punch with
either of these as a Dick's Pick, esp. if Knickerbocker also emerges in
the Vault thread.

It's evident by now though that the wind changes every few weeks where
vault selections are concerned. For example, it's been confirmed by a
couple of people (including Dick L.) that at one point they "picked"
Harpur 5/2/70, spent a couple months preparing it... then Phil vetoed
it.

I only know of one, 12/2/73 (I think) and it's a corker. Would love to hear

Isn't there a song on _Baron von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun_ titled
"My Mind Left My Body"? I'll have to go look tonight...if I remember..
Anyway that's how I thought the loosely similar jam got it's name...

Even though I *LOVE* 9/3/77, there are enough good copies floating around
that I'd rather see a show I know less about....

thanks!

Quite a setlist there...
542.52SMURF::MROGERSThu Sep 12 1996 11:2510
There is a tune called "Your Mind Has Left Your Body" on the
Baron Von Tollbooth album (one of these days RCA will get their
act together and get the CD released--this is one of the only
reasons I keep a turntable around...). Jerry even plays pedal steel
on it, which may be where he picked up the jam.

Paul Kantner has also released a 2-CD set that is a spoken word
history of the early SF days. It's a wonderful story, particularly
the pre-SF days around the peninsula when they were all doing folk
gigs and hanging out.
542.53HELIX::CLARKThu Sep 12 1996 13:588
I think Deadbase lists about 5 "Mind Left Body" jams...

And yeah, the song "Your Mind Has Left Your Body" from the Baron Von
Tollbooth album is supposed to be similar to a theme from at least one of
the Mind Left Body (Mud Love Buddy) jams.

Problem is, at least according to folks who have heard more than 1 or 2,
no 2 Mind Left Body's seem to have much, if anything, in common... - JayC.

On 12/2/73, "Mind Left Body" comes out of "Playing...", so it's kind of
a variation on a Playing jam of that time. This is the kind of stuff I
thought Rock Scully was lovingly referring to as "insect death music".

According to pmDeadbase [my name for the ASCII repository based on
Deadbase VII], this was the 4th & last jam designated Mind Left Body by
Deadbase. The first not to sprout out of Dark Star.

Deadbase may have changed their criteria for Mind Left Body for Deadbase
IX -- designations for jams were revamped in general, at least according
to their preface or preamble. Though maybe it only affected songs jammed
w/o a visit to the lyrics (Other One jam, Dark Star jam, Playing jam,
etc.).

Anyway, Phil/Dick/John apparently have little regard for Deadbase's
attempts to systemize namings of jams. 8) - JayC.

I am digging all this conversation although I've had nothing
to say (keep it up!) because -I- always assumed that it was
called Mind-Left-Body because that's what happens when you
hear it ;-) ;-) ;-)

this is all a learning experience for me!

I would say, JayC, that it seems that they -do- give credence
to the jams' "name" in Deadbase - because they are pranksteristically
fooling with it - either changing it to words that sound awful
similar or to a name which points to the album the song is on.

Well, if you believe what people swear to be true in rec.music.gdead, the
next Vault release Phil, John Cutler, & co. are working on is:

2/11/69, Fillmore East

To me this is an interesting rumor, because

(a) Dick has said 2/28/69 Fillmore West will be a future Dick's Pick
(b) the online ASCII Deadbase has only this for 2/11/69...

A couple of details I forgot to mention about 2/11/69 as a rumored Vault
release... (From the r.m.gd source:)

"Dark Star" is supposed to be killer... Like most Vault candidates
the master is 16-track, but most of the music happens on 2 tracks...
Dupree's is truncated after the first minute.

Someone was asking if this is the "Lovelight" Janis Joplin sat in
on... Probably not so, but interesting to imagine! - JayC.

Apologies if I'm repeating information posted in here earlier...

From r.m.gd: ICE magazine says the next Vault release (again, the
16-track series, not Dick's 2-tracks) has a working title of "Adventures
in the Phil Zone". David Gans replied that noone knows what's on it, but
that he, Dick L., and John Cutler were asked (presumably by Phil) for
suggestions.

That "Phil Zone" hanging off www.dead.net is pretty interesting.
Eroica symphony analysis... Phil's bedstand... Why TV is bad for kids...

By the way, let me further clarify about 2/11/69 as a rumored Vault
release... The reason people were asking if Janis Joplin appears for that
show's Lovelight is that she did guest on up to 4 Lovelights -- and Janis
was the top half of the bill that night. - JayC.

Rumors of 2/11/69 as a Vault release persist. Supposedly it's listed
on some HDCD web site as a forthcoming release.

Set list a couple of replies back. Killah Dark Star. Janis was on the

I keep forgetting to mention:

Scuttle-butt from rec.music.gdead is that Dick's Picks 8 is on for
mid/late June... [which applying the usual slip factor should mean early
July...]

2/11/69 -- including the early show not listed in Deadbase -- still
appears to be what's on tap, but that's less certain than the fact a
Dick's Pick is 3-6 weeks away. For one thing, 2/11/69 has been rumored as
an HDCD vault [not DP] release.

Meanwhile, someone got a look at the cut list for a vault release,
"Adventures in the Phil Zone", and was blown away. (Phil was soliciting
suggestions from Dick, John, etc., for this a while ago.) No time frame
given, but sounds promising... - JayC.
