I taped the 7/19  show from where I was sitting in the middle of Section 7,
using my small omnidirectional mikes.  Not the best mikes, from not the
best position.  I haven't heard my own tape yet cause I lent it to my taper
buddy for him to dub, since my own decks are very busy.
We were going to tape with Joe's AKG-460 cardiod mikes, but the wet weather
was making them fritz out.  In the middle of all the screwing around with 
mikes, cable, 48V phantom power supplies, etc, to try to figure out what was
wrong with the AKG's, a friend came up and asked for a patch.. had to turn 
him away cause we didn't have our shit together yet...he ended up patching 
into Neuman's (very very good mikes!) in the rear of Section 2 - the front 
middle section.  We traded and I should be getting that tape this week.  
He reports that the sound is a little muddy as it is wont to be in the shed... 
I can probably do a little EQ on that to help it out...

Now, which show did ya want ?  the first, or the second?
My tape of the second show sounds a little better, since it was with better
mikes which were in a very good taping location (rear center of Section 2).
I can run off some cassette masters, but I don't know yet what lenghts
of cassette are needed.  Show was around/just over 2 hours.

couldn't find a generic Allman Bros note - but thought since
this one is here and I'm STILL interested in a tape of last
July's Great Woods show, I'd grovel again and put in this news
I read over the weekend:

in a press release dated
Friday April 18, it was announced that Warren Haynes and Allen Woody left
the band to "pursue other musical interests".  At this point, the Bros.
plan to find replacements and continue their summer tour.

    with Warren and Allen leaving the Brothers, they certainly will be
    missed...to see how well these guys play try and catch a Government
    Mule show...I saw them at Club Toast in Burlington after the Dead '95
    Highgate show and they blew me away...                 Ross

I'll second that Ross.  I've seen Goverment Mule a handful of times and
every time has been excellent.   

      I heard on the radio (wzlx) that the replacements for Warren and
    Woody have been picked.....Oteil Burbridge will play bass and a guy,
    whose name I forget, who replaced Dickie a couple years ago when he was
    in rehab for hitting his wife, will play the other guitar....no, its
    not Zak wilde....

    that would have to be Dave Grissom, who has played for John Mellencamp,etc. 
    
    I'm kind of disappointed in this choice. Even though he's a good
    player, he's kind of generic. Warren Haynes had a unique playing
    personality. Even though a lot of people didn;t like him, I thought
    his style fit into the band very well. Grissom is more like a studio
    player, very slick but bland. I wasn't impressed with him at the
    GW show a few years ago. They should have stolen the guy from 
    Widespread Panic :-)

    his voice was ten times better than anyone else's in the band

    I agree on Dave Grissom.  In other contexts (his work with Joe Ely and
    John Mellencamp for example) he's a killer player, but he just didn't
    mesh with the Allmans.  This may sound like blasphemy to some, but I
    kinda wish Dickie had tried going it alone again.  He did some of his
    finest work in the early post-Duane Allmans, when he had to carry the
    load alone.
    
    Otiel on bass?  Great player, but in the Allmans???  Well, we'll see...
    

The problem with Dicky going it alone is that many standard Allman Bros
songs are based on twin lead guitar - hard to do alone.

      All I know about Oteil is that he did play on Trey A.'s "Surrender to
    the Air" CD.....

O'Teil played in a band called the Aquarium Rescue Unit
and he is one of the sickest bass players i've ever seen
... someone sent me a video of an old ARU show and it is
pretty incredible !  if i had dubbing capabilities i'd
offer it up, maybe someday ... i do have a couple shows
on cassette too (w special guests, etc)

the band usually let him go off on a few bass solos between
songs, and the crowd ate him up like candy !

when i first heard that O'Teil was joining the Allmans, I
thought "wishful thinking" on someone's part ... then I
found out it was true ... now I'm wondering how he'll fit
in with the band ... O'Teil tends to take the stage, even
in ARU, which has some talented musicians ... just unsure
how his style will mesh with the Allmans

should be interesting, just wondering how far the Allmans
will allow O'Teil to unleash his jamming on an unsuspecting
crowd ...

Allman Brothers Band Welcomes Two New Members

The Allman Brothers Band welcomes two new members. Joining the band on
lead and slide guitar is Jack Pearson and on bass is Oteil Burbridge.

Jack Pearson had played previously with the Brothers in 1993, when he
subbed for an ailing band member. Jack subsequently co-wrote with Gregg
Allman "Sailin' Cross the Devil's Sea" from the Allman Brothers Band
1994 recording "Where It All Begins". Having recorded and/or toured with
the Gregg Allman Band, Bobby Blue Bland, and Delbert McClinton, Jack
Pearson was an easy first choice to fill the guitar slot.

Oteil Burbridge is a founding member of the Aquarium Rescue Unit. As
featured on the cover of July 1997 Bass Player magazine, Oteil has been
making a name for himself playing and recording with many of the cult
alternative bands, including members of Phish, and T. Lavitz.
