514.0. "Old & In the Way - That High Lonesome Sound" by STAR::OCTOBR::DEBESS (WhatYouAreWhatYou'reMeantToBe) Wed Feb 28 1996 11:07

	Old and In the Way - That High Lonesome Sound

	anyone purchase this new release? whatcha think?

	for me, this music is pure heaven. I'm a bluegrass fan for more
	than 20 years and absolutely -loved- the other O&ITW recording...
	so eagerly anticipated this when I heard it would be released.

	This release doesn't contain as many "extended" songs as the first -
	most of the songs are like 3 minutes in length, but, man, these
	guys were tight. Every song does contain a beautiful solo/duo, or
	two, along with the harmonies these guys were so fine at.

	Vassar's fiddle playing is masterful - I guess that goes without
	saying - he is just right there, adding color, texture, jamming out.
	A sweet, sweet sound to all the songs. It feels like he was loving
	playing with this band because his music sounds happy and easy.
	Hearing him do "Orange Blossom Special" with this band is, well,
	special!

	Grisman plays the mandolin like he is possessed. Fast and furious,
	and beautiful.  Superb!

	Rowan's vocals I find very pleasing to my ears. Typical bluegrass
	style - what is it, a twang? - but he has a great voice and it is
	complemented very nicely by the others. His guitar playing ain't
	too shabby either!

	Jerry loved to pick the banjo. It shows. He was really a master at
	that instrument, even though it was like a sideline for him.
	He sings a version of Catfish John on this recording - nice.

	The CD comes with a many-page booklet with some great pictures.
	Jerry in pigtails - I LOVE it!

	Highly recommended.

514.1whew! good thing I'm seeing Bela Fleck in a few weeks!QUOIN::BELKINNothin' left to do but :-) :-) :-)Wed Feb 28 1996 11:2622
I think the liner notes are excellent. I like the part where Jerry describes
how his banjo playing influenced how he learned to play guitar. How playing
the banjo is a constant excercise in problem-solving, of moving the melody
(or is it the rythme? I always mix these up!) from finger to finger.
That he'd already "mastered" banjo by the time he picked up electric guitar,
so that when it came time to learn electric, he knew what to do (finger
excerises and stuff, I guess) to learn it.

Take a close listen to any of the CD 'cowboy' tunes - a hot '73 Me and My Uncle
for example. Listen carefully to Jerry's riffing style - its almost like
he's playing banjo, once you attune your ears to the banjo style!!
I was doing this and having fun mentally changing Jerry's guitar sound to a
banjo sound, while listening to the tape - just sorta reach into the audio
part of your brain and twist the "Jerry_Guitar_Sound" knob from "Telecaster" to
"Banjo" :-)  It works!

Doesn't the studio album version of Cumberland Blues have a banjo come in
briefly, after the break and just before the "Lotta poor man got the
Cumberland blues, he can't win, for loosin'"? Or is my knob (helplessly)
stuck on Banjo? :-)

Why doesn't Leblanc have any pants with zippers ?

Because farm animals can hear that zipper opening for miles, and run
with fright!
