| hope lots of responses come in here cause I need to fill the
vacuum that exists in my life now - especially live stuff -
what groups are y'all going to see locally? Noone gave me
any new music this year, so I can't respond to that. But I
have really been grooving on Rusted Root since I first heard
them (anyone have any live tapes of them?)
> call me trendy if you like, but Joan Osourne's disc Relish has been on
for those who were there, did she open for Rusted Root in Boston?
if so, Guntis remarked to me that he thought she reminded him of
Janis too...
> sigh... but i still miss the good ol' Grateful Dead....... no matter
> how good everyone else may be, thre's still something missing...
yow - me too - am I ever going to get over this feeling of a big
hole in my life? It's painful.

| I've been getting into a lot of new stuff lately, mostly I guess
what you'd call hard rock. It's a nice diversion from the 99.9%
dead/jgb etc that was all I listened to for years.
Recent acquisitions include:
Folk Implosion - cuts from "Kids" Soundtrack
"Natural One" or "I'm the One" or somesuch has been getting a
lot of airplay. Picked up the soundtrack that has the tune and
found a couple more by this band that are very good. Lots of
good percussion!
Bush - Sixteen Candles (? I think that's the name)
This band is good and gonna get better. Lots of great tunes.
You may have heard Everything Zen, Glycerine, Come Down,...
Alice in Chains - Grind
I like the way this sounds on the subwoofer ;-) Varying tempos:
there will be a tune that sounds like Black Sabbath, followed by
a real nice acoustic tune. Glad I picked it up.
Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill
Kind of wearing this one out. Aside from the 3 songs that have
been on FM, I don't like much else about the disc. But I love
those 3 tunes!
Pearl Jam - with Neil Young and vice versa on Mirror Ball and the
follow up single. Mirror Ball is kick a$$ classic rockin' Neil!
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (old bands that I'm rediscovering ;-)
Just because I used to love this album when first getting into
R+R and albums, and it still sounds great.
Led Zeppelin - II,III,Houses of the Holy remasters, Plant/Page No Quarter
Stocked up in preparation for the September concert and realized
once again how good they were.
Zappa - been on a mission since getting the cd player for the car.
Civilization Phase III is simply outstanding.
I'm sure I've forgotten something, but that's about it for now.

| >are there new artists you're checking out? (live or recorded)
Not many. We seem to be in an era of one-hit wonders. I doubt we'll
ever hear another hit from the likes of Alanis Morrisette, etc., etc.,
etc.
>are there old artists that are new to you?
My interest in jazz has been growing over the past few years. It's
been tough learning the names of songs, though; unlike rock 'n' roll,
the song title doesn't get drilled into your head a million times by
the refrain. I'm especially partial to Thelonious Monk.
I've been rebuilding my Who collection too since they're overhauling
the catalog. The new CDs are reissues done right: good re-mastering
(even a little tinkering with the mix), bonus tracks, and improved
packaging. "Live At Leeds" is almost double in length and sounds
fantastic. "The Who Sell Out" is also a favorite - they literally
tried to sell commercial space on the album, but ended up using phony
ads.
>what are you listening to these days???

| good topic...lately I haven't listened to much new music or old that's
new to me, due to learning songs for the new band...but a few things
have come along...
Knots & Crosses from 1993 a cd called Curve of the Earth...I bought
this for KAren for Christmas, Carol Noonan is the singer/guitarist in
the band, we had planned on seeing her at the OVK on Jan 20... we have
her solo cd, and I decided to check out her former band...only a couple
listens, but I like it, and probably will like it more with repeated
lisnin's...
Phish...I have neglected to put a review of my 1st Phish show in the
Phish note, but lemme summarize...good musicians, but their music
didn't really strike me...I was physically not feelin' well that night,
(I went to the Thurs 12/28 Centrum show) we had floor seats, I wasn't
up for standing all night...I'd heard some negative things about the
scene, but when I went I went Very Open Mindedm unfortunately before we
even pahhked the cahhh and got in the building, the "negative attitude"
manifested itself...I'll give it another listen, maybe the studio
stuff, but dunno about shows...maybe...
Acoustic Junction..well, they are not new, but they are releasing a new
cd in the spring...I saw them 3 times last year, I have their 2
available cd's and I Highly Recommend both of their studio cd's and the
live experience when they come back in the spring...

| I, too, like those who reissues. Add to the ones Jamie mentioned
earlier "Who's Next," which came out in the late November timeframe.
There are a lot of extra bonus cuts, and they're not throwaway tunes
either. These Who packages are a model that all record companies should
follow.
Another excellent package in this same vein is the new Velvet
Underground five-CD boxed set "Peel Slowly and See." This is almost the
complete Velvet Underground library in one box. The official releases
are surrounded by outtakes and demo versions, which in many cases sound
better than what appeared on the original albums.
Luna's "Penthouse" album (thanks, Bob), which sounds a lot like the
post-John Cale Velvet Underground (read mellower).
There are several new disks out that are in pretty steady rotation in
my CD player at work, including:
--Smashing Pumpkins--Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
--Pearl Jam--Vitalogy
--Presidents of the United States--same (love the "Kitty" and "Lump"
tunes)
--Older Roxy Music stuff (wish these guys would get back together
again)
Stuff to look forward to, RCA is going to release the missing Jefferson
Airplane CDs, notably "Bark" and "Long John Silver" at the end of the
month. There's also a Great Society (Grace Slick's first band) CD out
there called "Born to be Burned" from the early SF daze.

VERY INTERESTING!!!! DMB does not have a "regular" Guitar player...when
they record/tour, sometimes an old friend of the band plays "lead", if you
will, but very little. I don't think DMB allows taping anymore,
recording contract and all, but that would be an interesting tape that
I'd love to add to min...er, Patty's DMB collection. I've never seen
Phish and don't care all that much for them (although some stuf is

Rev. Gary Davis - Hot Tuna led me to him, try his Blink Harlem Street Singer
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain, don't listen to much of this but whoaa ..
Perry Como - a Christmas hits CD that the kids have had on - from 1950 to

Little Richard - another one the kids pulled out
Nature Company sampler - there is one cut of a native American tune and lyrics
sung with an alternative modern accompaniment, it's better

Bruce Springsteen - live concert from '78 (Passaic NJ) someone gave me

Bonnie Raitt - Road Tested, especially I Can Make You Love Me with Bruce
Hornsby on piano, Opening Farewell with Jackson Brown and
Angel From Montgomery with Hornsby, Brown and some others

The Complete Last Waltz
(4 CDs)
A complete soundboard or film source is used for this elaborate
four-CD set presenting The Band's farewell show from Thanksgiving Day
1976 at the Winterland in San Francisco. The concert was filmed by
Martin Scorsese and a [3]three-LP soundtrack was released with some
songs eliminated and the sequence of performances shuffled around to
give a better flow. The Complete Last Waltz collects all the omitted
tracks and is sequenced exactly as the concert was played. The CDs
packaging is just as exquisite as the original event. The four discs
are contained in a book binder cover housing the CD "envelopes" as
well as a copy of the Last Waltz guest welcome card. Also included are
36 pages of photos, liner notes, song and personnel listings,
discographies and the like. Each binder is numbered and only 3,000
sets were pressed. The recording is a solid one. It's an unmixed
soundboard, so even the released tracks have a slightly different
flavour to them. Some portions contain a "hum" indicating that this
might be from film footage but it doesn't intrude too badly. The
Complete Last Waltz is for those of you who just couldn't be
satisfied with a chopped version of The Band's last show.
Here are the 17 tracks omitted from the official Capitol release:
1. [6]This Wheel's on Fire
Co-written with Dylan and found on [7]Music From Big Pink, this
version gets a deluxe orchestra and horn arrangement by Allen
Toussaint.
2. [8]The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show [INLINE]
From [9]Stage Fright, Toussaint also arranges the horns to give
this a better effect.
3. Georgia on My Mind
No one can draw on their own personal sadness when singing a
melancholy number better than Richard Manuel. The omission of this
track from the official release is unpardonable.
4. [10]King Harvest [INLINE]
Another favourite sadly left off [11]The Last Waltz.
5. [12]Rag Mama Rag [INLINE]
Dixieland seems to be the theme here. This is a radical departure
from the studio version with Howard Johnson leading a horn section
of clarinets and tubas with a good measure of honky tonk piano
thrown in for good measure. Listed with Robbie Robertson as
singer, but it sure sounds like Levon Helm to me.
6. Caledonia
Not many realise that this number is a Louis Jordan cover. Muddy
Waters gets the call to do the lead vocal. Paul Butterfield adds
some great harp playing to this version but isn't listed.
7. All Our Past Times
Eric Clapton entered the proceedings with this number from his
[13]No Reason To Cry album and splits the lead vocal with Rick
Danko.
8. Four Strong Winds
Neil Young covers this Ian Tyson song. It's more interesting than
"Helpless" which made the official album.
9. Shadows & Light
Joni Mitchell may be a great songwriter but she's not a terribly
strong performer. Left off the album with good reason.
10. Furry Sings the Blues
Joni Mitchell again.
11. [14]Acadian Driftwood [INLINE]
A strong version with help from Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.
12. [15]Chest Fever [INLINE]
Although this track was always a concert highlight, it just
doesn't work here. The heavy focus on horns instead of Robertson's
guitar takes all the guts out of it. The Band also seems
uncomfortable with the arrangement. With these factors and its
12-min length, I can understand why it was excluded.
13. Hazel
Bob Dylan gives a simplistic reading of this cut from [16]Planet
Waves.
14. [17]I Shall Be Released [INLINE]
Dylan and Richard Manuel share the vocals.
15. Instrumental Jam #1
This 12-min jam starts off with a drum duel between Ringo and
Levon Helm before turning into a boogie-style guitar showcase with
Ron Wood, Clapton, Young, Stephen Stills and Robertson.
16. Instrumental Jam #2
This is a slow blues featuring Garth Hudson's keyboards and
lasting over 17 mins.
17. Don't Do It [INLINE]
The closing song of the show and an unforgivable exclusion from
the official release for that reason alone. A set meant to close
out a band's career should have contained their final notes.
The Complete Last Waltz is a pricey affair but with such a large dose
of worthwhile unreleased material, it is well worth the investment to
those with more than a passing appreciation for The Band.

| I'm always changing music, but this is basically what has been
sticking to me lately:
Boss Hogg - self titled
one of my favorite cds, Cristina Martinez (x-Pussy Galore) and
Jon Spencer (of Blues Explosion). Lots of energy in this cd.
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
(the perfect cd to smoke a cigarette to ;')
Rolling Stones - Some Girls
I asked for a Stones cd for christmas, and my boyfriend gave
me this one. I love it, it's been in constant rotation.
John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Double Fantasy
this one takes me back to my childhood, my mom used to
play it constantly. Of course, 80% of the time I
have to skip over yoko's songs, and I ALWAYS have to
skip over her "churn of energy" ;') at the end of "kiss kiss kiss".
BTW, did you know that Yoko Ono has a new cd out? Her son Sean
is in the band.
Neil Young - Harvest Moon
beautiful vocals, and can you believe one of my favorite songs
is "Old King"?
Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily
a lot of people find her voice annoying, in fact I myself
do sometimes but I still like this cd
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
This cd has definitely had to grow on me, and it still is
growing on me. I still find myself listening to it
once or twice a week.
old Bob Dylan, Lightning Hopkins, John Lee Hooker...
and of course...
Indigo Girls - Nomads Indians Saints
This will always be my all-time favorite cd in the world.
I have listened to this cd about 5 million times. I can't
believe I haven't chucked it out the window yet.
yikes it's 7:45 - I'm outta here!

"Death Don't Have No Mercy" (death), "Thats It For The Other One" (death and
lots of alienation), "Morning Dew" (death via WW III), "Black Throated Wind"

| mind if I comment on your note, Josh? ;-) You're touching on
some of my favorite subjects - death, alienation and lyrics...
although some of these songs are about dealing with death
(Stella Blue, Birdsong to me are examples), to me they are
not dark, desperate, depressing. On the contrary, they are
very uplifting. Death is inevitable - these songs seem to
encourage us to accept the death of one we love, to appreciate
what we've been given, to be with that person in other ways.
Now, I won't say that I don't get depressed listening to songs
like this nowadays, I think that depression is just a phase of
mourning that must be done. But, I am hearing the message and
know that, in the end, I will take it to heart and be at peace
with it. I don't think the songs are necessarily "depressing",
I think it's just my state of mind now.
"The Other One" I think is probably my favorite song. I never
thought about it as being about alienation. There's tension,
no doubt, both in the words and the music (oh, the music), but
there's also somehow a reassurance in the coming together, -us-
coming together. Maybe you think it's about alienation from
The Man? (the heat come by and busted me)... Maybe it is about
alienation from straight society, but I always zone in on the
trippy way of finding this other society that I belong to, and
so to me, it's about the opposite of alienation. Does that make
any sense? I don't think of it as being about death either...
maybe along with Cryptical?
"Black Peter" again talks about the inevitableness of death (and it's
just like any other day that's ever been), and it seems to be talking
about hospice, if you will. He's dying at home, with his friends
there and he's at peace with his death.
"Death Don't Have No Mercy" and "Morning Dew", I'll go along with the
dark, depressing, desperate characterization...
And "China Doll" is an exasperated "WHY?"
Black Throated Wind may start out about alienation, but I think,
in the end, he's trying to understand why whatever happened happened,
and he wants to get on with his life, with this as a lesson.
Wharf Rat IS dark, desperate, depressing BUT THEN "I'll get up and
fly away" I love that part.
imo,
Debess

| Josh, those songs you listed are _totally_ different from what I was
talking about. I guess you need to read the lyrics to the DMB song
(I don't know which one) about a desparate person going deeper and
deeper into a black hole, getting depressed, can't take it any more etc etc,
needles and junk, to see what I mean. Turned me right off... not what
I wanna listen to.
But I'm not a big lyrics person, and have a hard time understanding what
some songs mean in their entirety mean. Been listening to Bird Song for
years and didn't know it was about death! Is it really ?
What I like most is the music itself, and I already pointed out what I
thought of DMB. A couple of good tunes, but nothing else there to keep
any interest.
The other songs Debess mentioned, Death Don't and Dew, well, there's no
comparision. Those songs are _emotional_.

Bird Song [Garcia/Hunter]
All I know is something like a bird within her sang,
All I know she sang a little while and then flew on.
Tell me all that you know, I'll show you snow and rain.
If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passin' by.
Laugh in the sunshine, sing, cry in the dark,
Fly through the night.

Don't cry now, don't you cry, don't you cry anymore. La la la la
Sleep in the stars, don't you cry, dry your eyes on the wind.

Hmm I was thinking of the part that goes:
The other day they waited, the sky was dark and faded,
solemnly they stated, "He has to die, you know he has to die."
All the children learnin', from books that they were burnin',
every leaf was turnin'; to watch him die, you know he had to die.
The summer sun looked down on him, his mother could but frown on him,
And all the others sound on him, but it doesn't seem to matter.
And when the day had ended, with rainbow colors blended,
his mind remained unbended, he had to die, you know he had to die.
Thought I've read somewhere that Weir wrote this as a result of a
_real_heavy_ trip, the kind where one experiences that cosmic ego death.
On 5-2-70 this goes into drums, then the classic Phil bass intro to the
long, desparate jam/Other 1 verse1/jam/Other 1 verse2/jam/Cryptical verse
reprise that sure sounds to me like a journey to, and back from, that c.e.d.
place.
> And "China Doll" is an exasperated "WHY?"
Pretty sure I read someplace this is about a suicide:
A pistol shot, at five o'clock,
the bells of heaven ring,
tell me what you done it for,
No I won't tell you a thing.
Yesterday I begged you
before I hit the ground,
all I leave behind me
is only what I found.
Someone blowing their brains out (the "I" in the 4th -8th line being the
suicide victim talking).
> Black Throated Wind may start out about alienation, but I think,
> in the end, he's trying to understand why whatever happened happened,
> and he wants to get on with his life, with this as a lesson.
Yup, ends with a sorts of "screw you all, turn is around, thats what I'm gonna
do". Actually, re-reading the lyrics, I think its about a love gone bad,
prompting the singer to hit the road:
I left Saint Louie, the city of blues,
in the midst of a storm I'd rather forget.
I tried to pretend it came to an end,
cause you weren't the woman I once thought I'd met.

Josh, I thought the part you quoted as "The Other One" was
actually "Cryptical"...and then I kinda figured that part was
written by Jerry cause he's the one that sings it?
but, in any event, what you've described above, if it's about
"The Other One" is pretty cool to know because that is some
pretty powerful music there...
so anyways, I guess I figured that Cryptical was about Neal
Cassady because it envelopes(d) The Other One, which mentions
him. That part does seem to be about his death. But The Other
One still doesn't seem to to me...

I forget the title, but if you pick up a handful at a record store it
is pretty easy to spot due to the dates beside the tunes (1987, 1992,

My favorite is "I've Got That Old Feeling". This album was among the best
3 or 4 albums of its year ('90?) in any genre, and IMO deserved the same
shower of awards the compilation is getting. (It did get a Grammy I
think.)
Feeling is one of her "solo albums" -- this means she takes all the
vocals, rather than giving a handful to the Union Station guys, and no
bluegrass instrumental romps are included.
I find the '95 compilation pretty weird -- it picks only 1 cut from each
album (hitting none of my favorites). But it does throw in a bunch of
misc. & new cuts that are worth having it for, even if you own the
original albums. There's one cut I really love, the one culled from a
Jerry Douglas album. - Jay

No, da ve, your not the only one. Album is a term that is as
appropriate for a CD as it is for an LP vinyl record. In the early days of the
recording industry, playing times for records were fairly short. A recording of
a classical work came on many vinyl disks that were grouped together in a book
of sleeves that came to be called an album. As time went by, and more and more
works began appearing on a single disk, the term "album" stuck. It is therefore
more appropriate to refer to something like "One from the Vault," which is two
CDs in a little booklet, as an album, than it is to call the vinyl version of
"The Golden Age of Wireless," which is a single LP disk, an album. However,
modern usage has album meaning a long recording, so the media, or the number, no
longer matters.

Every now and then I paw through my mother's Billie Holiday and Bessie
Smith "albums" from her childhood. The Billie Holiday one (actually
issued under the session leader, Teddy Wilson's, name) is five 78s, each
in its own paper sleeve, which you can leaf through.
It looks and handles exactly like a photo album, except it contains
phonographs rather than photographs. Literally a phono album.
The 78s are thick & heavy, and the whole thing is pretty unwieldy. Today
the same album (with 2 cuts added) is available as the Columbia "album"
Lady Day.
Finding hot small-group gems like "Miss Brown to You", "What a Little
Moonlight Can Do", "I Cried for You", etc., back in 1939 must've been a
trip. Billie Holiday with Teddy Wilson, Lester Young, Benny Goodman, Ben
Webster, ... while all your friends were listening to pale (literally)
imitations, light opera, or classical. Like finding the key to the

But then it turns dark again after August West's story when the singer
starts to doubt his girl's fidelity. The theme of the song can be
summed by the platitude "There, but for the grace of God, go I."
Just catching up on an old digression.

Stuff to listen to:
Phish -- Just can't beat these guys at this point. Although it is
understandable how some may feel after their first show,
not having listened to much beforehand, I think that if one
were to allow themselves the time to listen to some studio
stuff for a while the shows would become more enjoyable.
There just aren't many bands out there that have a complete
ensemble of extremely talented musicians, such is Phish.
Max Creek -- Saw these guys for the first time about 2 weeks ago in
Providence at the Living Room. Apparently they've been
together for about 10 years and doing dead covers for most of
that time. Now they are playing their own and it blew me
away. A very tight group that shows their experience playing
together. A must see...thurs. Feb 8 @ Paradise in Boston
and Fri. Feb 9 @ Lupo's in Providence.
Widespread Panic -- Do I need to explain this. Buy 'Everyday' and
'Space Wrangler' and you won't be disappointed.
Eddie Bush Group -- From the Carolina's, not sure you'll see much of
them in new england just yet, but keep your eyes/ears open.
Dave Matthews -- Come on now people, are you seriously considering
dmb and green day in the same conversation! Dave has some
great tunes and wonderful talent in his group. Saw them live
in Charleston, SC at The Citadel...great show, can't wait to
see them again. Highly recommend 'Remember Two Things'.
Percy Hill -- Fairly new band from UNH. Still unreleased but you
can grab their two Cd's at their shows. They played Paradise
about 3 weeks ago, and rotate around the maine, n. hampshire,
mass. areas regularly. Major influences are Allman Bros. and
Dead primarily...but don't expect covers, these guys have their
own great stuff and their hot!!!
We'll try more later...see ya..................multibeast

Yeah, one of the many trip shows me and friends would check out
when I was in high school. They've been around at least 12 years.
One night I snuck into the old Lupo's when I was 14 for the Creek.
They jammed out St. Stephen, Dark Star, Scarlet Begonias, Season
of the Witch and I know you Rider...all in one set! Another time, I
was 15 and we went to Dean Jr College to see em, afterwards, a
fraternity crowd came around and beat everyone up! I wrote quite
a letter to the college never to hear anything back. Place must suck!

| Beatles Anthology 2 of course, being the Beatle-maniac that I
am I'm gonna suggest you get this, but GET THIS !!! It's not only for
"collectors" there are some unreleased songs, versions of songs that
I've never heard before, and I'd heard a lot of that booted studio
outtake stuff...and some remixes that are just blowing me away.
EMI/Capitol/Paul, George, Ringo have really done a GRATE job with this
set. The liner notes are invaluable, there is an order form for various
types of Beatle t-shirts, organic, hemp products (backpacks etc) hats.
Some personal highlights...Yesterday, Take 1...Paul McCartney...alone
on acoustic guitar and vocal, some pre-take bantering, teaching George
the chords, and then a STUNNING version of the song...sans strings...
It is the only alternate studio version of the song, as take 2 was the
released version.
(Beatle Note: Many early Beatle classics were 1 take toonz, especially
Paul toonz, the way they worked in the studio was amazing)
Eleanor rigby, string only...Within You without you instrumental
version, and your Bird Can Sing (many giggles)
I'm Looking Thru you take 1...cool
Strawberry Fields Forever...a few different takes, way cooool
A Day in the Life...complete with John's instructions where to mike the
piano, and his "Sugar Plum Fairy" countoff
last but not least, Across The Universe...John on vox and acoustic
guitar with a little instrumentation behinf him, but not the LEt It Be
Phil Spectorized string/choir version...AWEsome
well, I won't spoil all the fun, but I think this volume 2 will be the
best of the 3...

| I agree that Beatles Anthology 2 is grate...
[Though being especially a Lennon fan, and not so much a Sgt. Pepper fan
(relative to Rubber Soul & Revolver), I would single out the first disc of
this, plus the second disc of Anthology I, as my faves so far...
Lennon's vocals on those 2 CDs blow me away -- it's true what someone
comments, that Lennon was born to sing rock (while McCartney among other
great ones had to learn & adjust). Several of the vocals are much rawer
and more intense than what got released at the time.
It's also true what someone else commented in notes, that the grate sound
on these Anthology CDs makes you wonder at the relatively poor(er) sound
on the official releases. Well, at least now we know it's fixable! ]

| JayJolls...I heard from a Very Reputable Beatle Collector that Anthology 2 was
set for release, and McCartney scrapped it...I'm Down was going to be song #5
on disc 1, but he wanted it as song #3...apparently Millions of $$$ were lost
due to Macca's request...The Beatles (Paul in particular apparently) were quite
involved, and quite attentive to Detail on these releases...
but, yeah, there prolly is an "unofficial release" available...re" comments on
sound quality...it's been a sore sport for avid Beatle fans/collectors for
YEARS that the sound quality of the offical Apple cd's are bogus in some cases.
for instance, the first 4 "albums" (and keep in mind they mimic the UK vinyl
releases, not the USA Capitol monstrosities we grew up with) are all Mono mixes.
There is room on a cd for the mono mix and the stero mixes...
oh well, EMI/Capitol/Apple will get more $$$ from us in the future...and that's
part of the reason why the anthology is soooo coool, the mixes are different
from the official releases, and sound better in some cases
Debess, THANX for quoting some Beatles...Tomorrow Never Knows for sure !!!

BTW, interesting version of "Tomorrow Never Knows" on Anthology II...
Totally different drum track, among other things.
> i saw an article yesterday where there was some dispute over
> making stereo releases from the original mono. i'll try and
> highlight some of it if i get the chance.
Many potential mono/stereo ratholes when it comes to the Beatles...
Here's one: Mono mixes of every album up through "White Album" were
released -- and ( just my opinion ) the mono mixes are uniformly far
better (up through Sgt. Pepper).
Esp. for Sgt Pepper. The CD stereo mix ain't too shabby but, played side
by side, it doesn't match the original mono mix for LP. (I'm not alone in
this opinion, not that it makes me right...)
[And don't event get me started on Dylan Highway 61 & Blonde on Blonde --
so many putrid stereo (re)mixes of those... Admittedly I haven't checked
out the 24-bit CD stereo mixes.]
Not that the *sound* on the Beatles/Dylan stereo mixes is ever that bad,
and I'm not a "back to mono" pedant either -- specifically it's the mix,
the blend of instruments, the levels, artificial separations of vocals,
rhythm tracks, key overdubs. (JMO.)
> I don't
> understand the phrase "McCartney had to learn and adjust"
My basis for saying that is listening to McCartney's very early vocals.
Even his early I Saw Her Standing There and early Little Richard covers.
It seems to me he was nowhere near the level he reached, after they
started making albums, with Long Tall Sally, I'm Down, [Kansas City,
Helter Skelter, etc.] (as I hear it anyway). Almost seems like he was
uncomfortable singing "rough" at the outset, maybe had to be egged into
it. Whereas Lennon seems to have been ready to shred from the outset.
Maybe I'm imagining things... 8) - JayC.

this tape I have of that show, also has an interview at the
end with Bobby and Gans.
Gans is saying that it was great hearing Weir play with Hornsby,
but the crowd was incredibly blown away to have Phil come out.
and then Weir, in agreement, relates this little story that
Hornsby told him. Seems that Bruce had invited one of his
"jock friends" to the show. And, as Bobby tells it, "this guy
doesn't know too much about music, doesn't know dick about the
Grateful Dead", and the guy tells Hornsby "I'm standing there
and this guy comes out on stage [Phil], and then the guy
next to me starts -crying-"!!! It's so funny to hear Bob

every once in a while this aching feeling from the past
jumps out to remind us that we've been scarred...
Jerry left an amazing legacy on tape. That is a treasure,
but it's also very likely to bring some painful feelings
to the surface for years to come - because they remind us
of what we've lost and can't have anymore.
I've been trying to experience his death as a spiritual
lesson - cause it's so hard to lose someone you love -

instead of thinking of spirituality in the sense of an
afterlife (i'll deal with that when i get there ;-)...
I look at my life as an ongoing series of spiritual lessons -
what do I get out of these painful or joyful or even ordinary
life experiences - and how do I react to and deal with them.
It's my feeling that this is what life is all about -
I'm here at this time and in relationship with the people
in my life because I'm to learn "lessons" from it/them all.
I see, the older I get ;-), that none of us is going to
get through this life without dealing with some real
heavy duty life changing issues. And it's up to us how
we deal with them. And if we don't deal so well this time,
do we learn how to deal in a better way the next?
The next time?...or the next life? !!!

I'll be navigating these for weeks -- I don't recognize most of 'em but
I'm psyched. The first time I'm going chronologically, starting with
3/1/69 and 5/2/70... Anyone heard of those?

4/9/75
VALENTINE'S DAY SHOW (Dead members): 2/14/95
BRUCE HORNSBY: 8/27/95
Also apparently duplicates of the following:

I'll be offering 'em in topic 70... - JayC.

Absolutely! Just finished it.
On to the '72 show (with Souls in Communion, which I've never heard, and I
believe with Pig's last vocal turn, on Chinatown Shuffle). Unless I've
confused it with another -- one of the bunch has this. - JayC.

| I'm up to 8/19/89, Greek Theater, in my "newbie-vana" trove...
This is a great show. How the tapeheads surveyed for Deadbase IX could
fail to place this within the top 260 "hot tapes"... in which 9 other
shows from '89 placed... beats me!
The previous night, 8/18, is pretty awful -- its only saving grace (to my
ears, from just 1 listen) being the encores... Black Muddy Water, in a
stirring version; and We Bid You Goodnight, best version I've ever heard
(I now officially like this song). Vocals and group interaction on these
2 encores are as strong as they were pathetic for everything before. What
woke the boyz up between Set 2 and the encore? (Hopefully, their consciences.)
Anyway, 8/19 is a whole other kettle of fish. Esp. in the 2nd set, which
begins with a smokin' China Cat and never cools down... I never heard a
NFA taken over completely by the crowd, rhythm & vocals, though I know
it's not unique. Here, it's the perfect set closer (Set 1's wasn't bad
either!). Set list follows... As always, your mileage may vary. - JayC.

I'm on a reggae listening tear of late, and I'm looking for suggestions...
Thought I'd try here before checking "the literature".
I'm looking for... worthwhile compilations or collections, like these:
The Harder They Come (soundtrack w/ Jimmy Cliff et al.)
Tougher Than Tough (4-CD Island compilation)
(For example, are Kong or Trojan compilations mentioned earlier in the
string available on CD?)
Also looking for more of the real musicmakers of substance -- the ones
whose whole careers are worth exploring, who have at least 1-2 dozen songs
worth hearing, like these:
Toots (Hibbert) & the Maytals, Anthology (2-Island)
Bob Marley & the Wailers, compilation or selected albums
Burning Spear, Anthology (2-Island)
Black Uhuru [w/ Sly & Robbie], Anthology (2-Island)
(For example, is Steel Pulse in this league? Haven't heard 'em. What
about 90s guys my kids are listening to, like Shaggy?)
Any interesting hybrids, like the reggae tribute to the Grateful Dead?
Pointers appreciated! - Jay

Columbia House carries most of the Zappa catalog, if you're interested
in joining a club. I did the math before joining, and the average
cost/CD works out to $6-7 depending on how much effort you put into
getting the best deal.
Check out www.columbiahouse.com and search their catalog.

Merle Haggard - Down Every Road (4 CD retrospective from 1961-1994).
This is the Bakerfield country music sound. Haggard has the reserved
reputation of being one of the very best singers AND songwriters. There
is not a bad cut on this set. If you like "Momma Tried", you should
hear the original version that was the radio hit. Also, Haggard's band
The Strangers is one of the best. Good stuff here.

This is excellent; The box that is. The solo acoustic medley from his

thing is excellent and a nice retrospective.

This is excellent as well! I just picked it up.
There's another 4 cd set out I've looked at over the last couple

Some good ones there probz! I recently got "Make a Jazz Noise Here" in the
cutout bin @ strawberries, good deal! Have heard good things about "Guitar"
but don't have that one.
Grand Wazoo is such a classic! If you like that style, Hot Rats/Waka Jawaka
is a must. Those are among my favorites.
I also just got "The Lost Episodes" from a cd club called CD-HQ, a subsidiary
of Columbia House (and MUCH better IMO). Glad I only paid $5.99 for it...
it's one of those for historical purposes onlys ;-)
If you want something totally amazing, check out "Lather" (contains a lot of
or most of Live in New York, Orchestral Favorites, Weasels..., and Studio Tan).
Expensive but worth it. And if you have no budget at all and want to be
totally blown away, Civilization Phase III is highly recommended! Zappa
worked on it for years, it's an opera about people who live a giant piano,
with amazing synclavier work.

| Just to help multiplex the reggae, Zappa, and C&W sub strings... 8)
REGGAE: Thanks for the reggae comments, will try to find that 4-CD History.
ZAPPA: My tape of the Dead UNC 3/24/93 has some great Zappa filler...
First, Zappa's Jimmy Swaggart Texas-motel-room medley, which is several
Beatles tunes but substituting lyrics about Jimmy, hookers, & Texas motel
rooms. Plus a great note-for-note cover of I Am the Walrus. (This
follows on the Dead's Lucy In the Sky encore, ya see.)
C&W: I devoured that Merle Haggard Down Every Road 4-CD set a few months
ago -- great great stuff.
Incidentally, the liner notes describe how "Okie from Muskogee" evolved
from tour-bus wise cracking about road signs... According to these notes,
it was never intended to be taken as anything but a novelty song. When
Nixon seized on it and the spotlight turned on Haggard, well, it was not
unlike when Bush seized on Springsteen's "Born in the USA"...
Supposedly Haggard was pretty shocked at the reactions it got, and went
into seclusion (for a couple of years) as soon as the media glare abated...
As for this comment:
> I was just thinking about C&W lately, trying to
> think about who was worth listening to in these days of BarfBrooks...
> C&W is starting to go through the same cycles as rock, with the
> suits taking the edge off and making it lifeless in order to
> sell more product...
I agree. And Hank Williams (Sr.), absolutely, he's the absolute most
worthwhile, period. (The new hot "roots" country group, BR5-49, includes
a guy whose Hank covers sound uncannily like the real thing...)
But there's lots of good C&W off (or on the fringes of) country radio.
Fwiw, when I constructed a CD library, with my kids in mind, a couple
years ago, here's some of what went onto the country shelf... - JayC.

Ah, I think you're right. The Reagan/Bush years blur together for me...
What I really ducked back in to say -- the only reason Johnny Cash (not to
mention Jerry Lee Lewis, other Sun artists, and probably even Buddy Holly)
isn't in that CD library under Country/Folk is that, for the moment, he's
on the Pop/Rock shelf (actually, these are entire walls, not just

| The 4 CD history of Jamican Music is not all reggae since it starts with ska
and goes through several phases of which reggae is the most recognized and
popular. The dancehall music is very interesting. My vote for one of the
best reggae CDs is the Marley Live album recorded at the Albert Hall in
London. Markley is just hitting it big and this is a show were he pulls
out all the stops. I would actually prefer the video of this since it
great to watch and the video, I think, adds some additional songs.
Can't go wrong with a Hank Williams (Sr.) greatest hits CD. Try to find
one that has more than 12 cuts. Williams was great.
There is a 3 CD Johnny Cash retrospective that covers everything of substance
prior to American Recordings which I would recommend if you like Cash.
American Recordings is Cash accompanying himself on solo acoustic guitar.
This is pretty timeless music.
Listen to Bill Monroe if you want to understand where the blues got
supercharged so it could turn into rock and roll. I have the 4 CD set,
but would probably recommend a greatest hits from the late 40's when
he had Flatt and Scruggs in the band. Peter Rowan and Vassar Clemens
from Old and In the Way played for Bill Monroe. If you are into
bluegrass, you need to listen to some Bill Monroe.
If you want a country sampler, try the Columbia 5 CD set. This is broken
down into (from memory) Roots, Honky Tonk, Americana, Nashville and New
Generation. This starts with the Carter Family doing "Can the Circle Be
Unbroken" and includes 4-5 John Cash hits, Roy Acuff, a couple Bill Monroe,
a Merle Haggard tune, a whole CD of country novelty songs (such as Jimmy
Dean's "Big Bad John" and Little Jimmy Dicken's "May the Bird of Paradise
Fly Up Your Nose") and some Bob Dylan (Nashville Skyline stuff) and ends
around 1980 with stuff like Roseanne Cash's (John's daughter) "Seven Year
Ache". BTW, these CDs can be bought separately and sometimes at the
"Right Price".
Another good set is The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be
Unbroken" 2 CD set which has almost all the greats in country music
circa the late 60's including Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson,
Roy Acuff, but not including Bill Monroe (who was too much of a
purist to consider playing with what looked like a bunch of hippies.

No but I heard ole' Pat on NPR the other morning touting his new Rock
and Roll cd :)
Pat talked about his problems with Debbiw who had a poster of Hendrix
hanging on her wall. He made her take it down. He likened that to
breaking her will...she was obviously confused and didn;t even know
who Hendrix was let along what he sounded like...she only put the poster
up to be different.
:)
Oh yea! Pat said he'd didn't know anything about Jimi except for the
Star Spangled Banner.
Now he's covering AC/DC, Zep, Alice Cooper, and a whole slew of others
I forgot - Actually I think my brain and eyes glazed over as the piece
was ending while AC/DC's "It's a long way to the top..." was fading out.
here's another gem: "those are some good songs. I never though to listen
to them."
He's also changed a couple subtle references to sex etc.
File this with Golden Throats....

| My wife got me 4 Pat Martino CD's for Christmas, and a CD
on Rykodisk called Venu, by Zakir Hussain and Chaurasian
Hariprasad.
Venu was recorded in 1974 by Mickey Hart. It's just Indian
flute and percussion. Indian harmony is typically very sparse,
just a drone note in the background and the scales establishing
tension and dissonance. This CD is very intense when you're in
the right kind of mood; say, dosing at sunrise :-). I wouldn't
play it at a superbowl party. Definately worth checking out.
Pat Martino is the god of jazz guitar. Nobody else even comes
close. Pat can play as fluidly as anyone around, but what gets
me is the sense of logical, almost mathematical beauty which
comes through in his music. If you're into chaos theory or
have read "At Home in the Universe", Pat kind of expresses
those ideas musically. If there was one CD I'd get, it would
be "Consciousness".

myself enjoying the "first set" too.

| The bands list posted for the (massive, as usual!) '97 New Orleans
Heritage festival [no, no Phish this year...] made me pull out of storage...
Very Best of the Neville Brothers (Rhino).
This is a single-CD compilation drawn from Rhino's previous compilations
(Treacherous: History of the Neville Brothers [2-CD] and Treacherous, Too).
I had forgotten how good some of the Nevilles stuff is... Especially 60s
singles (Tell It Like It Is) and 70s cuts from the Wild Tchoupitoulas
and The Neville Brothers albums.
Other superlative New Orleans compilations committed by Rhino are:
New Orleans Party Classics (single CD - Prof Longhair, Huey Smith,
Dr. John, Nevilles, Toussaint, Fats Domino, on and on.
Lives up to its title, all the way!)
the Prof. Longhair 2-CD anthology
Rhino sures does this sort of regional compilation well -- in fact for
Louisiana in particular. The "Alligator Stomp" compilation (and its
sequels) are fantastic samplers of cajun & zydeco... And there are
Louisiana blues compilations too.
NO Party Classics is next in my player... -JayC.

| Latest (belated) discovery is "Elastica", by Elastica.
Don't know much about them, but I'd peg them as girl-guitar-alt-rock...
Descended from (or at least IMO aurally reminiscent of) Patti Smith c.'75
and Debby Harry c.'76. Good crunching, nuts&bolts guitar rock with good
tunes.
They were a critical sensation in '95, but only now am I getting to
'95 in my purchases stack...
Next up (down?), Pavement's critically acclaimed "Crooked Rain", from '94.
Also continuing to dig the Black Uhuru anthology, and also Peter Tosh's
"Equal Rights" (nice tunes -- though to my ears it needs remixing to bring
the bass way up -- I'd hate to think CBS toned it down for the 70s rock
marketplace...). - Jay

| Everyone mentions the "Black Muddy River" at the last show, for obvious
reasons... IMO the version of "So Many Roads" played at the last show is
a truly special Dead moment. Jerry connects with the song and the crowd
is right there with him.
A couple of measures in the vocal show he's still capable of musical
surprise -- a mellismatic run he could not have pulled off in his 20s, or
even (with such feeling) in his 30s... (more surprising still given the
wretched condition of his voice that night.)
I haven't heard other versions, and people say the song was overplayed...
Still, I hope this version emerges on a commercial release for all the
fans to hear. YMMV, JayC.

| I've been on a Buddy Guy kick lately -
Listening to "Five Long Years" on Eric Clapton's From the Cradle led me to
two Buddy Guy versions of this. The first was an old version (I'm guessing
the early 60's) with Junior Wells - what a cut! The other was from Guy's
excellent Damn Right I've Got the Blues, which I think was the best version
of the three. In addition to the title cut, Damn Right I've Got the Blues
has great versions of Mustang Sally and Where is the Next One Coming From.
The Very Best of Buddy Guy compilation had a cut called Stone Crazy which
reminded me of an album of that name (which surprisingly does not contain
the song Stone Crazy) that starts off with a stunning 9+ minute raving blues
number entitled I Smell A Rat. I've heard great things about the Buddy Guy
and Junior Wells album. I will put that on my list of things to check out.
Guy comes to Boston pretty regularly. He is worth going to see.

recommended the same (most recent) Guy/Wells album to me. (Haven't heard

If you haven't already, you might also want to check out the "Hoodoo Man
Blues" album on Delmark. These days it seems to be cataloged under Junior
Wells, but Buddy Guy's on it. Early stuff, might've been their first
collaboration.
Among other things, it has the version of "You Don't Love Me" on which the
Allman's is closely modeled. (Like Clapton's "Key to the Highway" is
modeled on Little Walter's -- a near cloning...) FWIW, JayC.

Yo PeterT, Sharkey's is probably still there. Famous for cheap eats

| ..listened to 12/31/82 New Years show last night...
..Etta James comes out for a few numbers one of which is Tell Mama,
she goes into this small rap, something along these lines.."when you
hear the Grateful Dead you hear the blues..how come ya have a name like
that.."
..couldn't help but crack up because of her latter comments..
..I'd love any copies from 5/2/70,11/30/73 or 5/8/77, my Cornell copy
is starting to sound like a dog..(willing to trade)

i'm always impressed by the sound quality of my copy, but
it is readily available and i'm sure others have copies sounding
equally as nice... it is best to put it on a metal tape (that is
what mine is on) because of Phil !! he's outta hand that night
on the bass doing those big doooooooooowwwwwwwwooooooooopppppsss !!

Just got in latest CD order. I had heard about God Street Wine, so
ordered one 'o them. 'RED'. Question: I thought that these guys
have been around for a Looonnnnnggggg time, but the liner says 7 years.
Was there another GSW? Or am I in a time warp?
The other selection was something from high school days. I had
won a 'stereo' HiFi, portable record player from a radio station.
(portable my a**, the thing must have weighed 30 to 40 lbs.) Since
I was in tech school, I opened it up and installed a headphone jack
'cuz my parents used to freak over my music. (remember this as your
'dren get older 8*)))) ) One of my greatest memories was sitting on
the couch, doing homework, with the headphones on. Where's my time
machine??????? The album?: Doors: Absolutely Live!!!!!!!!! I
was hooked. Never looked back!!!!!!!! I've been waiting for the day
when this would come out on CD. And there's only 24 seconds missing.
(calc'd - I still have the orig. and replacement copies of vinyl)
The year? Approx. '71 - '72. Memories - don't you love 'em?
Glen(n) - who's almost ancient as rfb 8*)))))
p.s. I'm old enuf that my son asked if I was sad when the
dinosaurs died.....

I'm in a new building (CX01) for about a month now, were I used to work
6-7 years ago, all the peopel I used to work with just haveta make some
comment about my hair length (almost down to my waist) and color
(mostly grey) "Ya know, if you'd get a haircut, most of that grey
wouldn't show." stuff like that...and weird looks from chicks...

Before I got this gig, I had tried to grow my hair. I had always
wanted to do the 'tail thing. After a year, all I had was a thin,
mousy tail about 5 inches or so. The sides were like wings, always
sticking out. At the time I was trying to get a job, and finally
realized that some folks just havta take appearance into consideration
as to whether you can do the job or not,,,, so,,,, chop chop chop.....
I almost look respectable now..... (deadhead in disguise)
