| of course.....they've been the dead since they discovered there was
already a Warlocks... thru Pig, thru Bill Grahm hating the name,
thru Constantin, thru Keith and Donna, thru
Brent, and now thru Jerry....."and the music never stopped..."
just my opinion....

the first days and weeks after Jerry died, I felt it was over.
There was no way that the Dead could go on without him.
As the weeks turned into months now, I'm feeling differently.
I see that the phenomenon called the Grateful Dead was/is/&always
will be more than the individual musicians. We know how the
"music plays the band" and how much a part -we- are too.
Although, it goes without saying, they will NEVER be the same
without Jerry, if they play together, to me they will be the
Grateful Dead - just a new form of it.
There's a lot of power in that name and I hope they do keep it.

How about the Grateful Live?
I still think that the music died on Aug. 10. More importantly, I
*think* (the logical reasoning side of me, which generates the income)
the scene died as well. but I *hope* (the illogical side which has been
such a large part of my life for far longer and deeper than the
logical) and more and more, fueled in no small part by talking and
noting with YOU (whichever individual YOU is reading this note at this
very second) and my non-Net 'Head friends that maybe we can still varry
it on.
I will go & listen to whatever comes along... the RatDogs, the Diga
Rhythms, whatever Phil wants to call his bunch... and actually will
possibly get to see them more&closer to home... since Jerry was the one
who (according to the stories I've heard) didn't want to play in New
Mexico.
...mike
PS thanks, Debess, for this note.

in spirit!

| The Grateful Dead should live on in name and music. The
Garcia Band, well....

Actually I'm gonna miss hearing Melvin Seals tear up those keys!!!
He had my vote for stepping in as Brent's successor.

499.10 | Dead on the road again? | FABSIX::D_TODD | | Sun Nov 19 1995 08:33 | 13 |
| As far as the Dead going back on tour next year as "The Dead", I Don't
think so.
I would have to say that being 50+ and having been on the
road for thirty years, they no longer find it necessary to go back on
the road especially after the loss of their friend. In addition, the
way the crowds have been acting over the past few years (riots...),
the dead have already threatened to stop touring, now this is the
catalyst, I believe, that will allow them to step back and lead more
private lives.
Perhaps they'll work on some new studio stuff for love of music, but
It's my opinion that we won't be seeing much of the boys on the road...
at least any time soon.
speak w/ you soon...Dave Todd
