483.0. "RFK (6/24-25/95) tree announcement" by SSGV02::TPNSTN::strobel (Jeff Strobel) Thu Sep 07 1995 17:36

Well, since rfb and Mystery have been seeding trees of late, I thought I'd
plant one as well. The tapes are on there way to me, so if they aren't
worth it (slim to no chance of that) I'll uproot this thing faster than a
Bob Packwood denial. Anyway, detail

    Most folks use Maxell: XLII (vgood), XLII-S (better), MX/MXS (even better)

    As for equipment, that depends on a lot of things. But if you have
    2 good decks, or a high quality dubbing deck, and you know how to use/
    not use Dolby, etc, and you think your dubs sound great, then that's
    all you need. Might as well try...

483.30tree structureSSGV02::TPNSTN::strobelJeff StrobelWed Oct 04 1995 12:1650
Here's the long-delayed tree structure. Before folks go sending off tapes,
pleased be advised of the following. I received my tapes on MX-S and
they're recorded VERY high, resulting in some distortion. I've spun copies
of these at significantly lower levels and they sound very good, but you'll
still catch some distortion (MX-S work better than XLII or XLIIS). I've
requested new tapes from my parent but haven't heard boo yet. If folks want
off the tree or want to wait and see what my parent does (or doesn't do),
please respond. We can either:

Let the tree run
Hold out for a while longer
Uproot the thing
Run a second tree if/when I get new tapes.

Sorry for the delay and glitches. Although the tapes sound very good, I
figured I'd float this out now rather than have people expecting pristine
copies and hearing some distortion.

    It happened. I got my tapes from Jeff. Made my copies and sent them
    out. I did not keep the tapes, as the saturation made them (IMHO)
    unlistenable.

I'm still looking, when possible, for a replacement set of tapes for these shows. The
saturation Dave mentioned was, based on my mail from my peer leaves on the net tree, was on
the DAT seed. The tapes are listenable on metal (mx-s) but conversely, if you're going to
spend that kind of money on metal tapes, it should be to get tapes that are outstanding,
not just listenable. Sorry for the confusion and dashed hopes.

483.38DAT tapes don't saturate like thatNECSC::LEVYHalf-Step Mississippi Uptown ToodleooMon Dec 04 1995 12:156
It's been my experience that DAT tapes don't saturate like that. The noise
you get on DAT is much more severe...or the signal just turns off.

Unless this was an analog recording, already saturated, copied to DAT.
