    the Boston Garden shows (since it's a Boston paper). Presumably the
    other fall tour shows are in the same situation, cancelled and refund
    information to come after August 21st.

      The Grateful Dead agreed unanimously yesterday to cancel their fall
    tour in the wake of Jerry Garcia's recent death.  That means the six Boston
    Garden shows set for Sept. 13-19---the last rock shows scheduled before
    its demolition---are now officially off.
    
      "Sorry, the Garden is going to have to fall down on its own," Dead
    spokesman Dennis McNally said last night from San Fransisco, where the
    band held a meeting to discuss future plans.
    
      There was, however, a note of optimism that emerged from the meeting,
    said a source.  No one talked about dissolving the band, so Deadheads
    can take hope about some kind of future lineup, though the configuration is
    "radically up in the air."
    
      A method of refunds for the Garden shows will be announced after Aug.
    21. "The reason for the delay is simple," said McNally.  "Many Deadheads
    will want to keep their tickets and will not want a refund.  But in that
    case, the money by law will all go to the state of California---it won't go
    to charity.  I don't think that's what Deadheads want.  So we need to wait
    until the 21st and by then we'll identify a charity."
    
      Deadheads were urged to call the band's hotline after Aug. 21 for
    further information:  201-744-7700 or 415-457-6388.
    
            

    
    I would love to see the boyz go on, but right now it's very difficult
    to conceptualize.
    
    I had a daydream yesterday that Robert Hunter was singing for the band.  
    They are, after all, his writings.

    at least we had the pleasure of seeing him perform live
    let the others who weren't so fortunate have a crack at it

    It will never be the same,but it could still be something special.In
    my heart i hope some configuration keeps the tradition alive

    
    Anyone have info on getting refunds for boston shows.   
    I heard today was the day to find out what the details are.
    
    I'd rather be asking for more tickets but since they can't
    be used I'll be sending them back for a refund.

    I heard there are places offering double the value of the ticket.
    

    I only mail ordered for 2 tickets for the Friday night show.
    Although I am really broke and could really use the $, I'm, going
    to keep these...

	I just read that there's something in the works to get your
	refund *and* keep the tix.

Here's what a friend posted:

   To get a refund of money without getting the tickets back as
   souvenirs, send them together with an SAE and name of original
   purchaser, to
   
   GDTS Refunds - Fall Tour
   PO Box 9812
   San Rafael
   CA 94912
   
   To be received by 6 October.
   
   After Labor Day, there will be instructions on how to get a refund
   and get the tickets back as souvenirs. 
   
   (Is Labor Day next week or the following?)
   
   If you do not send back tickets, GDTS cannot keep the money. It will
   be turned over to the state of California. To donate the money to the
   Rex Foundation, they need a photocopy of the fronts of all tickets
   and a signed letter asking for the donation to be made.
   
   (It is not clear if they want us to do this now or wait till after
   the post-Labor Day instruction is issued.)
   
   They apologise for having to send many MOs back unopened marked
   "return to sender. "
   
   There is a special printing of Hunter's elegy for Jerry that will be
   sent out with all refunds. If you want a copy and are not asking for
   a refund, you can send a No 10 SAE to

    Also no mention of Registered mail - I'm gonna call the probs line
    today and see what they say about that. Sure hate to lose 'em to some
    mail thieves now!!

Has anyone sent in an order for Philly tickets and NOT received their
unopened envelope stamped "return to sender"?  I got my MSG envelope back
about 2 weeks ago and I'm getting nervous.

    my friend doug called GDTS..they just got a batch of mail back from the

    I haven't received my MSG order back, however Markus did get his MSG
    and Philly orders returned to sender.  I stopped by the Post Office and
    they gave me a form to fill out (for a mere $2.75) which will do a
    tracer on your money order and return a check to you.  I decided to
    give them another 2 weeks and then I'm filing out the form.

GDTS needs to RECEIVE you refund request by Oct. 6

If you want to make a donation (e.g., the value of 1 or more tickets), they 
need a signed letter from you AND a photocopy of ALL of the fronts of your 
tickets.

Remember to send your name (or at least the name of the original ticket 
purchaser.

    So as all of us New England area people know tomorrow woulda been the
    first night of the Boston run (sorry to bring that up - as if you
    haven't thought of it already! ;^) and since a few of my friends that
    were gonna come up for the shows have the vacation time set aside
    they're coming up NEway. So we figgered on heading in to Beantown this
    weekend for dinner/beers at the Commonwealth. Anyone else up for this
    sort of thing? Suggestions/comments/RSVP's?

	i vote friday nite at the commonwealth.  ;-)

    i say we have a drum circle right on Casueway....

    JOhn and I will be at the commonwealth on sunday evening .. maybe see
    some of you there.  Also with us will be my daughter Tracy who
    was going to go to her first dead show on 9/17. Since she'll be in
