The journey has just started.
The first step has been taken.
The road less travelled is yours to follow.
may the light that you brought to our world
guide you on your way.
The physical walls have now been shed
The boundries have been broken.
The spirit soars forever more,
never to be forgotten
Cry no tears of sorrow,
shed a tear of joy.
The journey has just started
thanks for leading the way
Has an era passed or just started
The body has departed.
It can't be quenched,
It Cannot die
the spirit grows forever
Fly on my friend.
You will always be near
no matter where you travel

Yesterday, leaving work, I launched into my car and grabbed the first tape
I could get my hands on. "Mmmmmmm, Boston Garden, 9-27-94" (in my
best Homer voice). I popped in the tape and the *very* first thing I
heard come out of the speakers was "I know you rider gonna miss me when
I'm goooooonnnee" followed by a blaring crowd approval seeing it was
the intro. I thought to myself "you'd better friggin believe it

In life death seems like such a overwelming downfall, but with Jerry's
passing, for me, has given a new outlook on where we have been and where we
will go.
Last night after putting Eric to bed, Jen and I reflected a bit on the
news, one thing that came to me was that I would never again feel the same
about going to a concert. Because Dead shows and concerts of other acts we
so vastly different from one another. No one can tell me that Causway st
could ever give off the same vibes as when the Dead played there....not
even a playoff game would give off the same feelings....why is this ? I
figure it is the people who I have known from just this type of event,
Deadheads....yeah sometimes I could live without 50 people asking me for a
spare while I walk 10 ft but that to was a part of it...so taking the good
and the bad sides it seemed to always even out to be a very peaceful time..
Jen reached out and held my hand and said that if not for Jerry and the
Dead, she might have never met me....wow, yeah we met face to face outside
the Dead world but it was that world that made us aware of eachother. Im
sure others in GRATEFUL can relate....
The day was one long trip for me personally, a day of reflecting on the
past and looking to the future....will things still be the same somewhat ? What
I would look forward to, like figuring out how I could find a few tickets for
the up coming shows, are now no longer a reality....as I have always said just
seeing a show was one thing but how I got there and what happened on the way to
and from it was really the fun part of the times.....this I will miss, I know
that Jerry never once figured that it would ever be like this, how the Dead
became such a lifestyle, but it happened and he too seemed to just go along
with it and take it for what if was worth....Peace Jerry, and thanks for
the past 16 years, life will never be the same but it rarely is....

were playing "Uncle John's Band" and went into a jam. They got soooo
totally lost ... loster than I've ever seen them... after floundering
around (still maintaining the coherency of the jam, incredibly) for
some minutes they finally got back into it... "Oh oh, what I want to
know is
HOW DOES THIS SONG GO!"
The crowd ROARED!

Compared to lots of you noters I'm new to the Dead. I've been close
to people since the 70's that were into the music but I never went
to shows 'til the 90's. After my first show I fell for them and
fell hard. I couldn't get enough of the music and the euphoric
feeling that came with each show. I remember walking out of the
green line in front of the Garden and connecting with people
I knew and never met. I remember commenting that there was
something in their eyes that made me feel like I had found
a group people with eyes like mine. I wanted to go to
a West Coast show after that and made it to Vegas every year
since to see the boys bring new friends to experience them.
So many moments and big experiences. I remember taking my niece
then 16 to her first show at RFK and feeling like our spirits
were more similar than I'd ever guess. The next few tours
we brought more of her friends for their first shows.
There was a point at my last show in Albany when one of those
girls looked at me, filled with excitement and awe, and said
'these guys are great!'.
Thanks to the friends I've made from here. Carol, Debess,
DC, Chris LeBlanc, and more -- people I've grown to love and
meet on some ethereal plane to share music, experiences, brews,
and dancing.. I'm so grateful for the generosity and willingness
to share I've found here. I know my friendships with you guys will
go on and on, despite the music ending. Each show I've gone to
in the 90's I've thought, 'this could be the last time'. I just
hoped that day wouldn't come so soon.

| What the Dead and Jerry have taught us is a way of life. Life for all
of us goes on. Although we have lost a friend, his infulence continues
to guide us.
The people I feel most sorry for are those who never had the chance to
expirence the magic of the Dead. They will never know what a special
feeling it is to be a part of the " Dead Show". Total strangers from
all over the country, gather in one location for a few short hours, in
a celebration of music, love and life. They leave as friends, feeling
beter about themselves, and set out to make the world a better place.
purpose is to make the world a better place.

| For Jerry, may your soul rest upon God's Heart so that God may know
the joy of it.
The Seed
the four-fingered Hand has sewn
the seeds have grown
to become one
To share all that is,
was
and all that might have been
they are happy to be and reach to the sky in rejoice
they bloom their flowers so that many can see
their celebration
the seasons pass, summer peaks
golden grass, the river weeps
And all the while, tears are cried
they fall to Earth, the dream has died
And in its fall, a seed awaits
to come anew in its watering wake
to once again, bloom together
to reach the sky, to love each other
For in the arms of Heavens Gate
the Hand that touched our lives will wait
And watch with love, all his children
'til the day we all come home.

| Thursday August 10 - there was open casket viewing of Jerry at the St.
Stephan's Episcopal church in Belvedere CA. Jerry was reportedly
dressed in a black t-shirt and sweatpants.
Friday August 11 - funeral service at the St. Stephan church in Belvedere
starting at about 4pm. The officiant Matthew Fox was the pastor who
married Deborah and Jerry last year. The church is small only holding
200 to 250 people. Many people gave eulogies including Bob Weir,
Steve Parrish, Robert Hunter, John Barlow, Ken Kesey and Anabelle Garcia
(one of Jerry's daughters). Hunter recited a poem he just wrote (see
below). Musicians in attendance included band members, Bruce Hornsby
and Bob Dylan. A very small grave site service was held, it was
primarily for family and the band.
Sunday August 13 9am - a memorial gathering is scheduled for Golden
Gate Park. No musical acts (though there are rumors ;^) have been
announced at this time.
It is suggested that memorial donations be directed to:

An Elegy for Jerry (by Robert Hunter)
Jerry, my friend,
you've done it again,
even in your silence
the familiar pressure
comes to bear, demanding
I pull words from the air
with only this morning
and part of the afternoon
to compose an ode worthy
of one so particular
about every turn of phrase,
demanding it hit home
in a thousand ways
before making it his own,
and this I can't do alone.
Now that the singer is gone,
where shall I go for the song?
Without your melody and tase
to lend an attitude of grace
a lyric is an orphan thing,
a hive with neither honey's taste
nor power to truly sting.
What choice have I but to dare and
call your muse who thought to rest
out of the thin blue air
that out of the field of shared time,
a line or two might chance to shine --
As ever when we called,
in hope if not in words,
the muse descends.
How should she desert us now?
Scars of battle on her brow,
bedraggled feathers on her wings,
and yet she sings, she sings!
May she bear thee to thy rest,
the ancient bower of flowers
beyond the solitude of days,
the tyranny of hours--
the wreath of shining laurel lie
upon your shaggy head
bestowing power to play the lyre
to legions of the dead
If some part of that music
is heard in deepest dream,
or on some breeze of Summer
a snatch of golden theme,
we'll know you live inside us
with love that never parts
our good old Jack O'Diamonds
become the King of Hearts.
I feel your silent laughter
at sentiments so bold
that dare to step across the line
to tell what must be told,
so I'll just say I love you,
which I never said before
and let it go at that old friend
the rest you may ignore.

I stood before you

I stood before you

overcame me in a flury of dreams and light
I stand before you

Do not stand at my grave and weep;

I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I keep thinking of the poem that was read at the
funeral in "4 Weddings and a Funeral" which I know is by a great,
but I can't remember which one. Something along the lines
of "Stop the earth, drain the seas, turn off the sun.
He is gone..."
But then I can't force myself to become as morbid as the sentiment
of the poem would suggest.

| I've been reading this conference since last week (I still find it hard
to say, "since Jerry died") and I just want to add my thanks to all you
folks out there; reading this conference, and some of the stuff on the
Internet, has helped me feel less alone in my sadness...
I was a serious Deadhead in the late 60's and early 70's, when I was at
Brandeis in Waltham and a few years thereafter. I must have seen 50
shows... I've always kept an ear out, though, and when I heard they were
coming to the Palace of Auburn Hills in June, (the Red Wings hockey
arena, for goodness sakes!) something prompted me to go. I'm sure glad
I did. Jerry looked good on stage; his voice was strong, and although
he wandered off into noodling sometimes, the band gave a tight, strong
show.
I always meant to "get back into it", but I guess (like a foolish
adolescent) I thought the band would live forever. A little Life Lesson
about Doin' It for me...
I was on a camping trip with some Boy Scouts last winter, and one of the
other scoutmsters, a grad student at U. of M., had his guitar. We
passed it back and forth; he played Box of Rain and I played Ripple,
and we began to reminisce. Turns out I went to my first concert three
years before he was born...

Jerry's life came
And just as quickly went
Some would even say
He was heaven sent.
He has returned
If that is true,
Where the full moon lies
In a starry sky of blue.
Even though
Now he's gone
Let it be known to all
He shall live on.
He will not fade away
Or be put in the past.

| A EULOGY FOR CAPTAIN
by Sandy Troy
The first time I saw Jerry perform was at Woodstock in 1969.
I was a long-haired hippie wannabe, fresh out of high school.
My buddy Hugh, a former roughneck turned peacenik, wanted to
go up to Woodstock several days early so we could get jobs at
the festival. Next thing I know I'm working security at the
largest gathering of the tribes in history. Wouldn't you know,
where do I end up Saturday night but working the area between
the audience and the stage. I'm literally standing at Jerry's
feet. It's me between the band and 400,000 fans. Thank goodness
the vibes at Woodstock were all peace and love, for I was in
no condition to protect anyone or anything. I was high as a
kite and enjoying my front row seat. The Dead began playing
and the next thing I know the Stargate opens and I'm whisked
across the universe, never to be the same. Twenty-six years
and 260 shows later I was still on the bus when I got the news
of Jerry's death.
Jerry was a unique person whose path we were fortunate to cross.
He was important to so many people--not only those who came of
age in the sixties, but also those of all ages for whom his life
was an example of how they wanted to live. He "beat the system,"
doing whatever he wanted to do withouot compromising his values.
He was forever opening doors of creativity and experience during
a time when many of these doors were being closed elsewhere. And
he was always striving to stretch his muse and bring music to
new levels. His mission was to play music as best he could.
Although he certainly got a charge out of performing before
millions of adoring fans, his basic attitude remained the same:
playing before music-lovers was a privilege, and if his destiny
had been different, he would have gladly played his music for
nothing.
Others might mourn the passing of a great historical movement
now that Jerry is gone, but Jerry himself would be mystified
by all that. Others might regret that Jerry died so young, or
say that he had been killing himself for years through drug
use, poor diet, and the stress of constant road trips. But I
think Jerry understood the consequences of his life choices.
It was a natural end for a personality that burned so brightly
for so many years.
So we should look beyond his lifestyle for lessons about life.
We should look to the qualities that made Jerry so appealing
and successful: His honesty; his clear vision of right and
wrong in the world; his passion for life's work; his
willingness to share what he created--not only with fans
who taped his concerts, but with aspiring artists, too.
It is for these qualities that we must remember Jerry Garcia.
And if we can do that, and pass these qualities along to those
we touch, then Jerry's death will not be the end of an era,
but the beginning.
We love you Jerry, and thanks for a real good time.

"SO MANY ROADS!!!!!" with riotess conditions in the crowd.....then the
clip ends. I could have watched that clip a hundred times.

awesome dedication to Jerry...started off w/ a very nice Terrapin solo
followed by I Know You Rider and Scarlet Begonias...
was nice...

ps. On the whole that complete broadcast was EXCELLENT...Lots of great combos
like Soul Asylum w/ Iggy Pop then again w/ Lou Reed. Johnny Cash w/
Mellancamp. Al green and his silky smooooooth voice, Chrissy Hyndes covering
Neil Young, Robbie Robertson...lots more...Allman's w/ and without
Sheryl Crowe and I forget the zillions of other ones...

| Dylan was backed by his current band. I really liked the Hornsby part
too. In fact overall I thought that the show was excellent. I didn't
agree with the Globe review's negative parts at all. (Of course, I did
not 'see' it, only heard it on the simulcast, and that can make a
difference). The low point for me was 'The Weight', such a great song,
I really didn't like Robbie's singing on it. Of course Levon's vocal
is a tough act to follow. I taped it and maybe it'll grow on me...
There is talk that since it ran so late that they scrapped a planned
encore with everybody doing "Come together" and "Like a Rolling Stone".
Sigh.

articles/pictures are better than People's version. I especially liked
a number of the advertisements (the VW microbus with a tear falling

about framing!
On a whole I was very disappointed in the Rolling Stone. I thought the
articles were OK, but not one bit of passion to them. And, when I
think how the mag was founded in San Fran during the beginings of the
Dead's run I am especially disappointed that Jann Wenner didn't take
the effort to write some sort of tribute!
I'm off my soapbox now!

473.63 | Jerry Interview/Dead history Tape | CXDOCS::BARNES | | Thu Sep 14 1995 10:10 | 21 |
| fell asleep on the couch last nite listening to a tape made by a DJ
friend of ours..an NPRish tribute to Jerry called "Not Fade Away",
old bits of interviews between songs off of released albums put together
in sort of a cronological order...it's OK, Jerry says some
funny things although there's more music than interview. I only made it
thru the first tape (it's a 90 min and half of another 90). It starts
off sorta tough to handle though...with the Marin County Sheriff depts
report of Jerry's death.....
thinking about this, this could be a real good tape to give someone
not in the know because of the cronological order it's presented in and
because of some of the explanations the narrator offers...as well as
Jerry's explanations of certain songs, etc.... fer instance, Jerry stole a
line (didn't say which one, something to figger out) from a Bulgarian
folk song for Playin...and between the famous Warfield recordings and
radio city music hall recordings, they played in New Orleans and Jerry
said *THOSE* were the shows they should have taped and didn't!
(anyone got those tapes????)...also some funny stuff about the Prankster
days..

The lyrics to this song are so intense....seeing it was Jerry's
last song, I thought I'd post.
Black Muddy River
When the last rose of summer pricks my finger,
And the hot sun chills me to the bone,
When I can't hear the song for the singer,
And I can't tell my pillow from a stone,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.
When the last bolt of sunshine hits the mountain,
And the stars start to splatter in the sky,
When the moon hits the southwest horizon,
With the scream of an eagle on the fly,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And listen to the ripples as they moan,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.
Black muddy river, roll on forever,
I don't care how deep or wide, if you've got another side,
Roll muddy river, roll muddy river, black muddy river, roll.
When it seems like the night will last forever,
And there's nothing left to do but count the years,
When the strings of my heart begin to sever,
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And dream me a dream of my own,
I will walk alone, by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own, sing me a song of my own.

| A MESSAGE TO JERRY GARCIA
by Ken Kesey
Hey, Jerry-- what's happening? I
caught your funeral. Weird. Big
Steve was good. And Grissman.
Sweet sounds. But what really
stood out -- stands out -- is the
thundering silence, the lack, the
absence of that golden Garcia lead
line, of that familiar slick lick
with the uptwist at the end, that
merry snake twining through the
woodpile, flickering in and out of
the loosely stacked chords...a
wriggling mystery, bright and
slick as fire... suddenly gone.
And the silence left in its wake
was-- is-- positively
ear-splitting.
Now they want me to say something
about that absence, Jer. Tell some
backstage story, share some
poigniant reminescence. But I have
to tell you, man: I find myself
considerably disinclined. I mean,
why go against the grain of such
an eloquent silence?
I remember standing out in the
pearly early dawn after the Muir
Beach Acid Test, leaning on the
top rail of a driftwood fence with
you and Lesh and Babbs, watching
the world light up, talking about
our glorious futures. The gig had
been semi-successful and the air
was full of exulted fantasies.
Babbs whacks Phil on the back.
"Just like the big time, huh
Phil."
"It is! It is the big time! Why,
we could cut a chart-busting
record to-fucking-morrow!"
I was even more optimistic. "Hey,
we taped tonight's show. We could
release a record tomorrow.
"Yeah right--" (holding up that
digitally challenged hand the way
you did when you wanted to call
attention to the truth or the lack
thereof) "--and a year from
tomorrow be recording a Things Go
Better With Coke commercial."
You could be a sharp-tongued
popper-of-balloons shit-head when
you were so inclined, you know. A
real bastard. You were the sworn
enemy of hot air and commercials,
however righteous the cause or
lucrative the product. Nobody ever
heard you use that microphone as a
pulpit. No anti-war rants, no
hymns to peace. No odes to the
trees and All things Organic. No
ego-deaths or born-againnesses. No
devils denounced no gurus
glorified. No dogmatic howlings
that I ever caught wind of. In
fact, your steadfast denial of
dogma was as close as you ever
came to having a creed.
And to the very end, Old Timer,
you were true to that creed. No
commercials. No trendy spins. No
bayings of belief. And if you did
have any dogma you surely kept it
tied up under the back porch where
a smelly old hound belongs.
I guess that's what I mean about a
loud silence. Like Michaelangelo
said about sculpting, "The statue
exists inside the block of marble.
All you have to do is chip away
the stone you don't need." You
were always chipping away at the
superficial.
It was the false notes you didn't
play that kept that lead line so
golden pure. It was the words you
didn't sing. So this is what we
are left with, Jerry: this golden
silence. It rings on and on
without any hint of let up...on
and on. And I expect it will still
be ringing years from now.
Because you're still not playing
falsely. Because you're still not
singing Things Go Better With
Coke.
Ever your friend, Keez
