Hmmm, normally I'd say, nah, but maybe we should send a delegation down

| well, it's finally getting about that time for me to head outta here
for good. actually, i probably have past that allotted time, since my
last day was officially 2 days ago.
i've had a good time living in new england for the past 4 years and
working at dec. as many others have echoed before, one of the best
things about dec has definitely been this notes file. my experience at
this company would have been so vastly different without it. i've met
so many grate people, and i will truly miss you all. but i'm sure i
will cross paths with grateful pholks again.
dechead camping or skiing trip out in cali, anyone?
i pick up my truck on sunday, and i'm outta here on monday or tuesday.
free beer and pizza to anyone who wants to help me pack the truck!
(probably sunday, late afternoon -> evening). call @ 508-624-9712
if interested...
i don't yet have a phone number out in CA, but i do finally have a
snail-mail address. e-mail too!
peace and general phishiness,
- rich

Rich hung out with Patty and I this weekend. He called me at work about
5 times from parts of Kansas and COlorado, but I was at a BBQ. He
finally hooked up with me Friday nite and arrived around 6:30pm. After
a few beers, I took him on a quick trip to Garden of the Gods and
showed him where my youngest climbs...he was pumped to climb the next
day with Lindsey, but thought better of it cause JC and Dean had made
him hurt his hand on one last bike ride in NE before he left. %^)
but the next morning he and Lindsey talked climbing for a while. Patty
and I let him sleep in Sat morning and went to the Farmers Market for
fresh veggies for the weekend. Rich followed us up to Tumbledown that
day, beached his rig down the road so there would be *NO* backing up
required (quite the set-up he had there, huge Ryder truck pulling his
Honda on a flatbed). After some preparation, Rich and I headed for
Mosquito PAss in the old Scout while Patty kept a fire going for kabobs
and ears of corn later on. We stopped at about 13,000 and watched a 4x4
group get stuck and unstuck in a small snow field that crossed the
pass. Pretty funny watchin these guys, one Jeep blew out his back U-joint
and had front wheel drive only. Arthur the Assh*le wanted to help these
guys out, but his presence was not appreciated. We checked out the North
London mine remains, skied a snow field in our Teva's (FROZEN FEET!!!!)
checked out what little tundra was bloomin and spent some time checking
out a small snow bridge that had a stream running through/ underneath
it. We coaxed Arthur over the snow bridge hoping he'd crash through it
into the stream, but it held. RIch commented several times that he'd
never been 4-wheelin like this before...a couple of times he said "This
is a road?"... and was amazed when I said this was an old stage coach
road!!! Drank beers and marveled at the High Country.....Partyed late
that nite, pigged out on stir-fry type kabobs, brook and brown trout,
fresh ears of corn from Pueblo farmers and lots of beer.
Rich wanted to see stars at 10,000 ft.,...I went to bed seeing stars...
Next morning, a breakfast of taters, bacon, eggs, and brook trout
before Rich had to hit the road...Patty and I wondered how he did
driving his rig over Hoosier PAss....

Kewl!
...and just last monday Rich was tellin Scott and I that he only wanted to
drive 5-6 days and wasn't going to stop and smell the roses...
Glad to see the long hours on the road (and good friends :-) changed his
mind!!! :-)
re: Hoosier Pass
Is it anything like the pass at Veil on I-70? If so, then the truck shouldn't
have a problem. Dori and I did I-70 last year and while the temp guage did
move a bit to the right, we didn't have any problems. That truck Rich got is
the same model, but his only had 8000 miles on it when he picked it up ... and
the cab still had that "new car" smell. And the newer models have built-in
cup holders! We also set up Rich's bed in the 6'x8' crawl space on top of the
cab (like Dori and I did last year) ... Talk about goin' in style! :-)

| ya, It took a little convincing to get him to, errr, shall we say,
"stop and smell the roses"
Hoosier is a little steeper on the Summit County side than Vail pass and
with much sharper switch-backs....I'm sure he did OK (although he did
hit a building while visiting Charnokey(?) in Ohio....) %^)

468.28 | trailers and brick walls don't mix... :^) | ROCK::STAYLOR | | Tue Aug 08 1995 13:49 | 19 |
| > I'm sure he did OK (although he did

Yeah. As I understand it, he drove into a parking lot that he NEVER should
have gone into. It took him close to 2 hours (?!) to back his way out!
Apparently he worked his way into a pretty tight spot, and had to back
his way out using a "U-turn" maneuver. Anyway, the trailer for his car has a
ramp/tailgate that is raised when the car is on the trailer. Rich scraped one
of the taigate support arms (that hold it in the upright position) against the
side of the building. He told me that it put some good scrapes into the brick.
I've since heard from other sources that he actually took out a couple of
bricks! Don't know which story is true... Rich bent the arm pretty badly, and
doesn't know if he can get it easily straightened. He was talking about
getting a torch and heating it up until it could be bent back.
Last I heard (RFB may have later news), he should be arriving at Berkeley
sometime today and unloading the truck today/tomorrow.

468.29 | I made it! | ROCK::FROMM | This space intentionally left blank. | Tue Aug 22 1995 10:56 | 64 |
| just thought i'd check in and say hi from sunny california (i don't think it's
rained a single drop since i've been out here - kind of strange).
i'm doing ok - certainly much better than i was a few weeks ago. i had flown
out here about a month in advance to look for housing. i hadn't actually
signed a lease then (unfortunately), but i did end up finalizing something
over the phone and sending out a rent check right before i packed up and left
on my cross country journey.
by the time i managed to get ahold of the guy who i was going to be renting
from, it was the morning the morning of the day that i was due to arrive in
berkeley at that point, he claimed that he never received my check (that i
sent priority mail), assumed i wasn't interested in the room anymore
(apparently our verbal agreement and my mail piling up weren't clues to the
contrary), and rented the room out to someone else. (i think he's lying about
not receiving it, but i'll wait and see what the post office says about
trying to track down the letter.)
so then i had to scramble around at the last minute to find something else.
kinda sucked. but i did manage to find something, so i'm no longer homeless.
the drive cross country wasn't too bad. thanks to all the people who put me
up (put up with me?) along the way. apologies to mike charnoky for scraping
away a bit at the side of his apartment building (in retrospect it was a way
stupid idea to take my truck and trailer down that alley), but i don't think
it was really that bad. (only scraped up the building a little, and only
bent a single piece on the trailer - some huge guy at a gas station in utah
or nevada was able to bend it back by hand, so i didn't get charged for any
damage.) hanging out with rfb was fun. you were right - taking the truck
over the mountain pass wasn't really all that bad - i just took it really
slow and periodically pulled over to let people pass. certainly much quicker
than backtracking and crossing the continental divide on the interstate.
plenty of talk about jerry and playing of dead songs on the local radio
stations here. i actually was in golden gate park on the day of the gathering
there, but that was only a coincidence. by the time we wandered thru, the
official memorial was over, but there were still plenty of people hanging out
in tie-dyes, vw buses, etc.
to jc, deane, etc... my finger is still injured from our latest mtn. biking
expedition, although it's slowly getting stronger. i went for a road ride
yesterday up in the hills - there's some beautiful scenery around here, but
i wish it were a little bit flatter! finally got a chance to use the low,
granny-gear on my road bike. there's still a bit of evidence of the fires
from a couple of years ago - occasional patches of burned out trees, and LOTS
of new construction.
there's some orientation stuff starting tomorrow, and classes start on monday.
