I am not sure about being born, but I'd say many are conceived in the
middle of the night, after the bars close

As for the middle of the night stuff, my children do not support
that statistic. ;-)

Subj: WES CAN YOU POST THIS IN THE ERIC NOTE OF GRATEFUL
Eric William Fields June 22, 1995
As I look at my beautiful son, Eric William, I realize just how
fortunate I am to be a mother. Children are miraculous, and ours
is no exception. Reflecting on the 14 hours prior to his birth,
I feel an even greater closeness to Eric and to his wonderful
father.
Chris and I had gone into my regular checkup on Wednesday 6/21
@2:30PM. The mid-wife could not be certain if the baby was in the
head-down position and called in an OB/Gyn doctor to check. He
could not be certain either. Since I was 39 1/2 weeks and had been
4+cm dialated for over 3 weeks they requested an ultrasound to
verify the baby's position. Off to St. Vincent's we went...but
not before stopping by the house, feed Navajo Kitty and grabbing
my bag (instinct is truly amazing!).
By the time we got to St. Vincent's, were checked in and brought
to a labor room it was @4:00PM. They hooked me up to the monitors
and to our surprise I was having contractions @4-5 minutes apart !
(And I still couldn't really feel them.)
The OB/Gyn doctor on duty that afternoon was Dr. McNicholas. She
came in and checked the baby. Definitely breech. Rear-end down.
At this point I was still in a state of disbelief... as though
it weren't happening to me.
Our first course of action would be to try and turn the baby. I
was given a shot to relax my uterus (which has the not-so-wonderful
side effect of uncontrollable shaking), and the attempt was made.
No luck.
Reality set in when Dr. McNicholas gave us our options. If the baby
was small enough (a weight would be determined via ultrasound) we
could try labor. If anything started going wrong or labor stalled
I would be given a cesarean. Or, we could "go home", have a nice
dinner, a good nights sleep and return in the morning for a cesarean.
Either way I knew I wouldn't be getting much, if any, sleep. I also
knew that it was rare to even be given an option. Most doctors
nowadays will not deliver a breech baby - they will automatically
give a C-section. Because I had been born breech I knew it was
possible - my Mom did it and I had to try.
The ultrasound showed the baby to be @7 1/2 lbs. give or take a
half pound. Pitocin was started to regulate my contractions and
keep them going. We were on our way.
By 10:00PM I was 5cm dialated and feeling the contractions. I knew
they were going to give me an Epidural sometime before delivery...
standard with breech births to relax the muscles as much as possible
and in case forceps would be required during delivery of the head.
Around 11:00PM I gave into severe back labor and requested the
epidural. They were quick to oblige as I was too weak to try alternate
positions and too emotionally drained to care.
1:00AM 6/22 still only 5cm dialated, no progress. This is when the
threat of a C-section really hit me. I cried on Chris' shoulder for
around a half an hour before facing reality. If a C-section was the
way my baby was to enter the world, that's the way it was to be.
3:30AM 9 3/4cm ! No wonder I could feel the contractions !
Dr. McNicholas, bless her soul, had been delivering all night. She
wanted one hours sleep before breaking my water and starting the
pushing. Chris and I dozed until 4:10AM when my water broke so
loudly it woke him.
In a matter of 5 minutes the nurses had cleaned me up and started
me pushing. 4:30AM they wheeled the bed into Delivery. There were
approximately 15 doctors/nurses standing by and observing. A breech
delivery was so rare all that could attend were in attendance.
4:38AM. The most amazing surge of adrenaline and emotions as Eric
William makes his entrance into the world to a standing ovation
from all in the room. No forceps, only a very large episiotomy
required. As Chris and I cried, hugged and then I held Eric for
the first time it all blurred away. I lost sight of all who were
in the room....it was just the three of us and for an instant,
nothing else existed.
It is true what they say - it is worth it, all of it. When Eric
looks up at me with those loving, curious eyes I know I'd do it
all again for him. I have yet to decide the best day of my life
so far - the day Chris and I were married or the day I had his son.
I do know I'm terribly lucky to have two such wonderful men in
my life !
