| Chris L and the world in general,
Sorry to offend you with use of the word "touchhead".
In my mind it really means more along the lines of someone who's there at
the show just for the party and not for the music, and _how_ long they've
been listening to the Dead really isn't a distinction.
I don't care if you (general "you" here, not directed at Chris L!) lent Garcia
that dictionary where he looked up the phrase "Grateful Dead", and had
front-row seats to 3-1-69, if you're behind me at a show yellin' and screamin
during "Black Peter" etc, you're a yahoo! :-)

not to be nitpicking, but just to clarify. the place where i believe most
of us will be at is not the CBC. the CBC is the Cambridge Brewing Company,
which is across the river by MIT. although it is a nice hangout, and you'd
find it substantially less crowded than the Commonwealth Brewing Company before
and after a show, but it's not quite so close to the Garden.

This morning's topic: BG Transportation.
No, not what happens to you when the Boys melt your mind with really out-there
Bird Song or Playin' jam, but, on a more mundane level, I'm talkin'
physical, bodily movement to/from the B.G.!
Some folks here are partial to taking the train. Important for me though
is the ability to get home relatively ASAP so I can try to get some sleep...
Do you train-takers have any trouble with having to take a later train
than is optimal, given that a typical show lets out aroung 11:30?
When's the last train from N. Station, around 12:00 midnight?
Pahkin' lots. Last year I pahked a few times at the lot under the
"up" ramp to 93 by Leverett Circle (across the street from the apt. towers
at the end of Storrow Drive that have the sign that sez "if you lived here
you'd be home by now"). This lot was convienent for getting back onto 93.
Any other favorite pahking spots/lots? I guess that some lots would be
filled up by say 6 PM - that has some bearing then on when to decide to
split from work and head into town.

How late does the T run?, how late is the Alewife garage open?
Is anyone interested in getting a Real Table (TM) at the Brewery tomorrow?
Advantage of a Real Table (TM) is you get access to Real Food (TM) not
Bar Food (TM). :-) They have pretty good swordfish, as I recall!
Downstairs you can get only sandwiches (pretty good ones though) and fries
I can reserve a table for N people, if I get a rough idea of how many are
innerested. I think I'll be getting on-site around 5:15.

Very KIND night last night. Although, being 14th row gave me a unique
perspective that I have yet to encounter before in my 40+ show history.
Okay...While it's still very fresh -
Stranger, TLEO, and Minglewood blew my socks off. Maggie's>Cumberland was
such a smooth transition; didn't know what was going on til they started
singing.
2nd set was lighting....China->Rider was in the groove. *IT* was knocking
at my door, big time. Bobby took the lead on the transition to get
things organized....did a great job! Crowd seemed to be in a constant
roar. Women was excellent....flawless and spunky. A couple wind down
tunes, then a surprise, picture perfect Uncle Johns. D>S was loud and
full o' bass. Watchtower was good, but nothing major. Standing on the
Moon was, by far, the best version I've heard...powerful!!! I think
Jerry want's to "Be with us"....whatever that means!
Johny B Goode was also done to near perfection.

| Great show last night!
I was a little late getting in (what else is new!) so I missed most of
Stranger....
Stood behind the stage at the very top last row of the stadium.....had
lots of dancing room and I really like it behind there...one thing that
I noticed which I wish I hadn't was the ceiling! YUCK! It's hairy
and scary...
TLEO, Minglewood was good, then while groovin I turned around and
noticed a poor soul holding his head, sweating profusely and shaking.
Apparently, he slipped and fell and cut his head open. Then the
ambulance people came and put him in a wheelchair and strapped him in
it. He was all by himself and it looked kind of scary, especially if
he was on anything. So I walked down to the First Aid station with him
and waited with him, to make sure he was ok....
I only missed Roads and Maggie's Farm, so that was cool....Cumberland
was great....
Second set Rider was excellent..
Corrina:
Aaaahgghh! Did anyone else notice the high pitch ear piercing squeal that
followed each Corrina? (Corrrinnnnaaaaa WEEEEEE WEER WEER WEEEEEER)....
yow! I thought it was feedback at first, but then it happened each
time they got to that part.....but I guess it sounded kind of cool...yeah
Uncle Johns was great!
Drums/Space was cool as well, I love being behind the stage and
watching Mickey...D/S was about 30 minutes long...
I agree with Deane...last night's Standing on the Moon was the best
version I've heard!!! Perfect!

I'm *REALLY GRATEFUL* for the earplugs I had (thanks Rich!) -- we were sitting

Nice to run into a lot of folks down in the Brewery! Sure not gonna make
the mistake of staying there too long though. Left there around 7 and got
on a very long line to get in, missed Stranger.
Yeah - I looked up one point and noticed that old hairy scary ceiling too!
What IS that stuff? It looks like the entire ceiling is covered with
stretched-open steel wool strands. Probably decades of dirt but it looks
real wierd.
Nice light show on the central screen over the drummers.
Can someone(s) please update the BG seating map in 18.14?
In particular, whats the deal with the floor sections? I saw what seems
to be 4 sections with 5 aisles. Is section BB a really wide double-width
section, and AA, CC the narrow left-and right-most sections? or is there
an invisible line between AA and BB that would be in the middle of the
second-from-right (facing the stage) section? Which way do the seat
numbers go? Is this too many questions? :-)

C'mon, Danielle. You were at Woodstock :-)
I hate the stadium level because you can't see anything and the sound is
blocked by the overhang. You need to be in the first 5 or 6 rows for a decent
view/sound.
I thought it seemed much more crowded this year than last. I can remember
going behind the stage several nights last year and finding one or two seats
open around sec. 74. Last night we tried to move around and check out a
different vantage point but there was absolutely nothing to be had in the whole
place! People were everywhere and there were no free seats. The surfaces that
the lights shone upon were blocking the behind-the-stage view a lot worse than
last year. Looks like I'll be in my assigned seats every day this year.
Uncle John's was great, with an awesome "7" jam at the end. Johnny B Goode had
both my feet off the ground at times (no small feat for me)
I'm getting in early tonight! I missed the first 2 songs yesterday (we got a
late start on the road).

don't know about the hairy things in the ceiling, but the ceiling is
covered with a product called tectum. It's about 1/2" thick and has
fiberglas stranding in it which make it look veiny, even for a distance. It
was originally white but enough smoke, dirt, humidity, etc. make it look
like regurgitated fiber cereal or worse.

| Well, I'm not sure that last night was the best show I've been to, but it
was easily the best show I've SEEN, if you take my meaning, if you catch my
drift. I'll start at the start and wander around to the end, and hopefully
not take up too much diskspace ;-)
Left the house about 5:20 and took the pike all the way in to Copely.
Nice fairly empty $7.00 parking lot down the road a bit past the hotels
and plaza. From there it was a 5 minute walk to the T stop by the Boston
Public Library, and the green line to North Station. Getting off the T
the stairs emptied into one of the lines going in, so we just got in line and
were inside by 7pm or so. Very light pat down searches, and Amy didn't have
a handbag or anything so they didn't even bother with her. Grabbed some
icecream after hitting the port-o-sans (kind of unusual inside the building,
but useful in the Garden) and looked for the entrance to the floor. Very
inconspicuous door led us to the loge level and then downwards. Got some
directions from the ticket checkers, but we were pretty sure we knew where
the seats were ;-) We got to them by 7:15 and found two big guys with cameras
standing right in front of our chairs. After a bit Amy asked them if they
planned on hanging out there all night! As she put it "I'm short, and I'm
sick, and these are the best seats I've had in twenty years!" They were
fairly good about it and it turns out they had 1st row in AA. Which I
sympathized with, because their seats were basically in the floor bank of
speakers to stage right! Someone asked if the floor seemed more packed
then in previous years. Hard to say, since I've never been on the floor
in the Garden before, but from our aisle seats in BB, I could basically reach
out and touch the corner of the speaker bank which appeared to be about 10
feet high. About 3 or 4 feet in front of us, was a black wooden wall about
waist high, behind which the stage bouncers were sitting to make sure noone
rushed the stage. It seems to me that having been in the balcony behind
stage a few years ago (not last year) that there was more space in front,
but that may have just been perspective. Certainly the first few rows in
AA and DD might as well be considered obstructed view.
Just about everyone in the first few rows had their cameras with them.
I know I did! I think I might have gotten a few good shots, including
one Bob shot in mid-spit! I used up a whole roll (could have easily
used more, but only brought the one) and put it in for processing today,
so I'll let you know if there are any good ones. I'm a fairly decent
photographer, but haven't had a lot of experience/luck in previous
indoor events. The press photographers (the ones with the BIG lenses)
were let in front of the wall in front of us for the first 3 or 4 songs,
and then were hustled out, leaving us with noone in front for the rest
of the night. Funny watching them. All clustering around in front of us
jockeying for position. Then, on cue, after about 2 songs, they rushed
over to the other side of the stage to concentrate on that angle.
We had good views of just about everybody except Mickey and Bill, who
were hidden behind the drum sets. Great views of Jerry and Vince, as our seats
put us just a bit to the right of Vince's setup.
So, how was the show? Well, I had a great time. I think the night before
might have had a better show from the description, but overall I was
pleased. "Let the Good Times Roll" seemed a bit slow for a opener,
but was decent. We started to really get into it with "Bertha" which
has been a particular favorite of Amy's since the early 80's. At her
first job in Boston, Amy had a co-worker named Bertha whom she was not
particularly fond of, and who was a source of aggravation for her more than
a few times, so the chant of "Bertha don't you come around here anymore!"
really hits home!...
Time to go out to lunch for my boss's going away party. More later!!!

423.52 | its more then a show its an adventure !!!! | SLOHAN::FIELDS | Ain't gonna worry my life anymore | Thu Sep 29 1994 14:19 | 66 |
| As the day started out it looked like it was gonna be just another
freakin' crummy day in New England...but as the FOG burned off and the
bright sun peeked through, it started to look up ! After getting my
system together and running I logged in to see the night before's set
list....hummmm one hot show by the list and by what others were saying.
Could they do two in a row ? I went home at 2ish, had a brew watched
the weather channel to see if the rain was gonna come back....took a
nap....Jen got home and we had a quick bite to eat and hit the road by
4ish.....pulled into State St. parking lot ($7, with a $2 off
validation from any Quincy Market store) at 4:58.....hit the money
machine in the nice marbell lobby :') and started the short walk to the
Garden.....met up with Geoff Keller in the street as he handed out
Slipknot flyers (which Jen and I offered to do inside the show) so got
one thing outta the way (getting the flyers) and off the the
Commonwealth for some beers.....Met Jay and his friend Roz at the
bar....then saw Josh at a table...Joined him and his friend Eric (?)
who was not taping the show for a change I guess....then a few things
seem a bit hazey but Probs join in with a co-worker (?)....after 3
Burtons Jen and I felt it was time to go hand out flyers....Rich Fromm
and Jeff Maggard took our seats and we ran into FOG at the bottom of
the stairs....after howdies we left...down one street up another and
bang we run into FOG again ! he tells us he is going in NOW ! so we
figured to HEAD in too...no waiting and they didn't take my Granolla
bar away !!!!! swaped out seats and went to check them out. not bad not
at all....FOG takes off (we never see him again)....after a little time
who sits down next to us...Eric (?) Josh's friend who by the way is not
tapeing the show for some odd reason.......then Josh shows up and much
to his surprize he can't believe we got seats next to his....then I
turn around and there is Deane-O and a couple friends (I believe one
was a laywer, right?).....OK this is too cool ! lites go down at
@730ish...the band hits the stage a few minute later and off into Let
the Good times roll...yea-ha ! Jerry looks good and sound even better !
Vince has come along way (but in my heart I rilly miss Brent) Bobby is
still mister Rock and Roll star :') Phil is still Phil, a constant rock,
Billy and Mickey strong as always....Bertha was wonderful ! a good
greatest, and a West LA (a treat, haven't heard one in years) El Paso
was OK...lazy was alright....Eternity was funky jamming, you could
smell it ! 1st time for me (tape me please !) DoughKnees was lots of
fun !
took a quick walk at the break got some water ($2 a bottle, at least it
was cold)
I heard Victum revin' and was hyped for it !!! and was not
disappointed...Foolish was like gas on a fire !....Looks like rain was
nice....Samba was different but I guess I gotta hear it a few more time
for it to melt in....the Jerry/Drums jam was cool....Space was well
Space....Wheel was nice surge into Miracle (this even got a few cops
boogien')...Black Peter was good (I still cringe when I hear it though,
spring '87 in worcester always comes to mind :')) I didn't expect to
hear Lovelite and was up dancing my butt off !!!! when Baby Blue
started Jen and I felt it was time to beat the rush for air (which I
was lacking dearly !) and headed out to the cool air in the streets.
Stopped by the Beanpot to tell Geoff of the success Jen and I had
handing out flyers in the tunnel coming up into the garden ! while
doing this we met lots of friends :') and a former DEChead Bob Rose and
he was jazzed to know that Knot was playing later ! also Geoff was
happy to tell me that he found me a Monday ticket !!!! now what a
better way to top of a great show but with the promise of going to
another in a few days :')
Jen and I trucked back to the car and were back home tucked into bed by
12:30 dreaming happy dreams....

Good show last night!
This is a family notesfile, so I will not elaborate on the pre-show
sights I witnessed....but wow! I think the famed "Highgate Bonfire
Girl" came down to Boston yesterday.
1st set was a rage! It was short n' sweet, but right to the point!
Good Times went by very fast. Bertha and Greatest Story were like
a freight train blasted through the arena. Things got tropical.
West LA was unexpected...I didn't intend on hearing that, a treat!
El Paso was classic. Very good Lazy River Road....that song is in
the same groove as Peggy-O. I actually enjoyed Eternity. Sounded
grate! Don't Ease was short and sweaty. I wished the 1st set
was longer.
2nd set. Called the Victim opener during the break...the girl behind
me was like "no, no, not Victim, they won't play that". Sure enough
they did, but I explained to her that usually after a Victim opener,
the rest of the show is good, and it was. Foolish Heart, one of
may fav's. Things got pretty tropical during the foolish-jam in my
section. LLR could have been better, IMO. Jerry was playing too much
with the Sleeping-on-a-beach-in-Hawaii sound. Samba, as Chris said, I
need to hear again. Wheel, Miracle, Black Peter and Lovelight all seemed
flawless and played with vigor. Baby Blue helped me get cooled off a
little.
Overall, good show. *IT* came by a couple times to visit, but didn't
stay too long. Good workout the past 2 nights but I'm taking a break
til Monday...see ya'll then!

423.55 | A view from the front, take II (and call me in the morning) | QUARRY::petert | rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty | Thu Sep 29 1994 17:07 | 106 |
| Let's see, left off with Bertha. The other highlights of the first set
were Eternity which had a real decent jamming section in it, and Dough Knees.
One thing that Amy noticed that I didn't, probably because I was trying
to get camera shots, was that Bob kept throwing Jerry these weird
looks, like "where are you going with that" type of thing. This was
just for the first set though. El Paso was OK, but not memorable, though
I did make sure to get at least one picture of Bob on acoustic. Lazy River
Road was a bit unfamiliar to me and needs more listening to make a judgement
on. And let's not forget the fashion report! The crowd pleaser (shocker?)
of the night was Jer in a pair of black shorts! They appeared to be loose
sweatsuit like material, accompanied with black T shirt (tm) and black
loafers (looked kind of like lounging slippers). Bob was in shorts also,
and it was obvious who had the better legs ;-) But Jerry's were thinner
then I thought they would be, though he still has the pot belly. Hopefully the
film will reveal all,
After Don't Ease, the lights came up for the break and after sitting
around for a bit, we decided to roam around a little bit. Shortly ran into
and met some other DECheads. Todd Nicholson, and not too far away, Dave
Levy. I hadn't met either before, and it was nice to attach faces to names.
Dave did look vaguely familiar though, and after a bit of interrogation
we managed to establish that Dave was my Phantom Flasher ;-) (A month
or two ago I had written how some guy in a grey car with lots of stickers
on the back had passed me on 495 and waved and flashed his DEC badge
at me as he passed. He didn't pipe up last time, but now I know who it
was!) Continued to roam a bit looking in the taper section for
Mystery and his friend who wanted to trade seats with me for a few songs
to take HIS pictures. Didn't see them, but today I found Jim thought
I had the front row tickets for Saturday, so maybe it wouldn't have
worked anyway. Amy had headed back to our seats, though I thought she was
still following me and I spent a bit of time looking for her ;-)
Ran into Danielle, another first in person intro, and mentioning that
I had run into Levy and Nicholson, she followed me over to where they
were sitting. Danielle, something I thought of after I headed back
to my seat: How's that Woodstock review coming!?! C'mon, it's only
been a month or more ;-)
Headed back to the front, and sat waiting for another 20 minutes or
so for the break to end. Amy had to thank the security person near us,
for being able to keep the area fairly clear, ("I'm sick and I'm short
and I've waited 20 years...") I must admit, there was one thing about
being right up front that had it's drawbacks, trying to be inconspicuous ;-)
Ah well, trade offs. Security was fairly cool though, at least by us.
One guy right behind me was toking away on a joint during the 1st set and
security caught him. They took the joint from him, stubbed it out, and
about 30 seconds later, handed him BACK the joint(!), saying "Save this for later".
Not a bad attitude.
The lights went out for the 2nd set and everybody cheered and nothing
happened! There seemed to be little correlation between the lights going
out and the boys coming back. Eventually they did, but it was a few minutes
after the lights, and then another few minutes of noodling away. Saw Bob
and Jerry talking at one point and Bob laughing at it. Jerry seemed to be
having some problem with his guitar as he kept fussing with the controls.
Mickey and Bill got bored and started pounding out a beat. Eventually
Bob started twanging away, and it eventually turned into Victim as Jerry
finally got some things together. This was followed by a very hot
Foolish Heart. This just jammed away with everyone getting into it.
Noticed one vocal flub, I think, something along the lines of
"a Foolish heart is Bad, but a Foolish heart is worse." Eh? I might
have just misheard. LLR followed, not bad, but I've seen a lot and this
wasn't a stand out. Samba in the Rain will take some additional listenings,
but Vince was well into it. I think it was here that it ended, and things
just stopped. Then Bob pointed (pointedly ;-) at the drummers and put
down his guitar and walked backstage with Phil right behind. But
Jerry had something else in mind, and stayed on with his back towards us
and started into a heavy jam with the drummers and Vince stayed on as
well. It sort of reminded me of the Hornsby/drummers Jam of a few years
back at one of my previous Boston shows. Well, the circumstances, if not
the similarities of the jam. Vince eventually reached the end of what
he had to contribute, kind of threw his hands up, laughed and headed backstage.
Jerry eventually did much the same, but a bit more quietly, and Bill and
Mickey were left to their devices. And what devices! The beat just
kept building and building until BOOM, the whole building shook with a
few extra low loud notes that we could just feel through our whole bodies.
At this point, I noticed Mickey looking out at the audience and giving this
wicked little smile! ("hey, how was that ;-) Things then progressed to
the beam and more body rattling. After a while it got to be where I couldn't
see anybody on stage but I could still hear things going on. From previous
behind stage views, I've seen times where Bill and Mickey have actually left
the stage, but some software loop or something is continueing on this
wicked beat. Seemed like it might have happened again (or maybe I was
just hallucinating those other times ;-) but finally Bob came back and
started spacing, and then Jerry, and then Phil joined in, and then
Vince came back. I love drums and space and this was a fairly good one.
Eventually it coalesced into something recognizable, which turned out
to be the Wheel. And then things flowed smoothly and powerfully through
Miracle. Black Peter seems to have some sort of fix on me, though I
can't quite pin it down ;-) and Lovelight left us trim and burning.
Finally down to the encore and It's All over Now, Baby Blue, one of
my favorites. The place was still jamming after the last notes faded
but eventually they had to turn on the lights.
So how was it up front? Nice....
The sound was a bit muddy, but not that bad. Being towards the center a bit
more might have been better as there were a few speakers below the
stage but behind the security wall centerstage, but I can't be too
picky. We had the speakers just on the right of us, and directly overhead
were the catwalks with the speakers hanging off of them. Interesting at
one point to notice sneakers overhead. Turns out many of the spots
for the boys are manned by a crew sitting in the catwalks. Must be an
interesting perspective! All in all a very favorable time. The pinnacle of
our deadhead career, as Amy noted at one point. I'd do it again ;-)
Well, time to do something else today!

That occured to me. Thinish legs and a pot belly are what you might
expect of scuba diving. I've been in the water a lot and seen this
on the older swimmers.
Interestingly the Dead backstage folk had passes with the international
scuba sign on it. Remember that Bill is also heavy into scuba.
Hey Deano, were you sitting on Phil's side almost even with
the front of the stage about 15 or so rows off the floor? Spotted
another DEChead shirt up there and it looked like it might have been

I thought the first set was pretty lame on whole. Yeah, there were some spots,
but it didn't go much for me. The second set started a little shaky, but
quickly got in a groove. Excellent song selection and very good vocal
performances. For me, the second set WAS the show. I Fought the Law, for me,
was like a return to the first set.
No crowd at the Slipknot show. Got a table in the back with a great view
of the band. I like these guys.

| Quick note on the major hassle I went through getting in last night (I
think I was frisked by someone from the same school as the one who got

about 7:00 with a bunch of friends - nice & easy getting through for them
but when it got to be my turn...
I had a jean jacket on and a fanny-pack and this guy made me empty out
every pocket I had. Jean jacket, pants pockets, fanny-pack you name
it. "What's in here?" - "Notebook and pen" - "Take it out"
"What's in here?" - "Chewing gum" - "Take it out"
"What's in here?" - "A wad of toilet paper" - "Take it out"
"Look man I don't have anything!!!"
"What's in here? - take it out"... Gimme a friggin' break man.
Meanwhile the guys I'm with get in with a couple shot bottles in their
socks and never get touched. Finally after all my belongings were on
the ground he musta been satisfied and let me through - thanks for
screwing up my whole organization system pal! Now I gotta put all this
serious contraband back where it belongs.
So I guess the moral of the story is be careful there's a couple of
real anal security guards at the gates. First night I found one outta
the 3 so far - but just goes to show they're there.
BTW - he apparently doesn't know about the secret little compartment in

| Damn, I dunno if I should review the show HERE or in the show review note!
Almost all tunes played were from my group of favorites.
Pretty good seat, on the first row up from the aisle between lode and stadium,
behind the taper section - great view of the light show.
Still something is bugging me about the sound. Phil just isn't
the solid presence he was last year. Is it better on the floor?
Also, a lot really is lost because of the mono mix.
After Bucket, I thought Sugaree was gonna be next, but Jerry slowed things
down with Peggy-O. I think they got in the groove with Ramble On Rose,
Masterpiece, and BEW.
The Eyes was played with the slowest tempo I might have personally ever heard
them do - very close to the '74 versions! This was quite nice, and a
real pleasant change from the too-fast way they usually go it.
Jerry broke a string! Bobby carries the show! Bobby plays a lead!
Big roar from the crowd when Jer returned to his mike, after changing his
string while Bobby jammed and jammed and jammed and jammed all by his
lonesome self! I think Jer fumbled the lyrics when he got back to the
mike - right?
Eyes slide right into a slow-tempoed Estimated. We were treated to a
take-no-prisoners full-fledged Bobby Eagle
HAHHHHHHHHH!!!!
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
NAAA NAAA NAAA HHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
Space got into that symphonic atonal Phil-led thing that Phil did on Tuesday.
Interesting stuff! Embolded Bobby, having a taste of playing lead, did
some more during space. And he seems to have gotten his whammy-bar jones
a bit more under control :-), he did some nice whammy work in Space.
A very clearly demarcated Spanish Jam set up the obvious seque into the Other
One. _Another_ jerry ballad (wharf rat), when the Sugar Mag that Bobby was
saving his voice for. And I still like IFTL encoure!
Nice lightshow - I like the stuff up on the projection screen. Some of
what they show should be illegal :-) During Estimated, the seen-before
fast-motion clouds, but overlaid on regular-speed waves on a beach
(the burning shore!), and with spacey effects. During the Other One,
a weird shot of ? a religious shrine - figures of saints?, with incense
smoke puffing periodically. Fit the music real well, actually!
During the encore (or was it sugar mag?) they showed on-the-street video
of the Deadheads, and of some of the eating/drinking establishments in the
Garden/Fanual Hall area. The Oyster House, etc. Didn't show the Brewery
though ! :-)
Being on the first row on up from the aisle was wierd. Most of the time
the redjackets kept it pretty clear, which made for good viewing.
Other times, and especially during the break, it would be sooo crammed with
people it was like watching an overloaded subway train at rush hour, that
wasn't moving too fast, and that had no side walls, so you could see all the
people.

I don't recall if I mentioned that ear plugs were not at all necessary,
at least in that row. Some of the stage security had them in though.
Little plastic foam plugs that were a bit florescent. Some of the lights
must have had some low UV spectrum in them. Funny to see a mostly dark
face with glowing spots coming out of their ears!
They checked our tickets 2 to 3 times during the first set. Didn't
bother during the 2nd. I was beginning to feel like I should ask them
to punch my ticket so they'd know it was already done before ;-)

| Between Drums and Space, there was a good 2-3 minutes when there was
NO ONE on stage (that I could see, anyway), yet there was plenty of
noise coming from the PA. Now I know that the Bralove/soundboard run
MIDI samples, but this stuff sounded like it was being made live.
That is, it sounded like someone hitting a keyboard or drumpads to make the
sounds. Like the sounds Mikey makes when he's at his drumpads.
But there's no kb at the soundboard. So, how/where was all this sound
coming from? It did not sound like a 3 minute pre-canned sample.

Yes. After spending a night or two behind the stage, it is plain to see that
there is a guy behind the drums that plays a keyboard and related equipment.
I'd say most of the noise you hear during drums comes from that third person
(in addition to Mickey and Billy :-)).

For anybody who wants to follow this up, 1/60th looks like the better
bet for that speed film. 1/30th is a bit washed out, even though my
internal meter seems to like it better (but in a concert situation, you
can't really trust that too much). Some came out pretty good but no
contest winners. Probably about 1/3rd came out blurred due to motion
on my or the bands part (though more likely me, or someone jostling me
at just the wrong moment ;-) Only one picture of Mickey (though it looks
like I did a bad picture of Jerry who's in the center and out of focus).
No pictures of Bill as he was behind a plexiglass barrier from my

Jay, you must have gotten some relatively sharp pix at 1/125.
When I had front row at Giants in 91 and 92 I had my f4 35-135 zoom, with 1000
speed film. A 210 or 230 telephoto would have been nice! I got some good pix,
mostly from 1991, but most of them are just black around the edges, with the
subject (whoever had the stage lights shining on them) the only thing
adequately lit. 1/30 is pushing it, IMO, in terms of sharpness. Perhaps if
I'm ever in the situation again, I'd ignore the light meter and just take a
shot at 1/125 and hope the film's under-exposure latitude gives me a visible
image.
How was the light on the stage? At Giants, with 1000 ASA, my light meter
constantly wanted f2.8, and sometimes f4.
Last year I bought a used 135mm f2.8 lens for $50 just for this purpose. I
haven't had front row seats yet, though :-)
I'm interested in seeing each of your pix and "talking shop".

Best boogieing last night to Row Jimmy Row and Aiko.
After Aiko the set really seemed to fall apart for everyone up in the

looking around I could see that the tunes just weren't capturing people
like Aiko did.
I liked That Would Be Something (a Paul McCartney song, correct?)
A lot more crowd noise audible up in the balc.
A couple of things gotta come together for me to really enjoy a show:
. playing tunes I like :-)
. good sound
. some room to dance
. attending show with friends
. or if not sitting with friends, a friendly, into-the-music crowd right
around me.
Man I just don't like it when the Dead are cranking away on a fave tune
and I want to boogie, but I'm squashed in by big guys who just stand
there stock still. It _really_ kills the mood for me. I much prefer to
be in a crowd of dancing women. :-)

I have a sore throat today...too much (cough cough) smoke in the garden

SUNDAY NIGHT:
=============
Last night I was sitting in the 3rd row. Center. Perfect seats.
But then ---> Mr. 6'5" comes walking over and sits in the seat DIRECTLY
in front of me. :( :(
I couldn't see a damn thing. I was right in front of Jerry yet never
saw Jerry. The guy in front of me was freaking out and I'd lean over
to one side to see some of the show and 6'5 would boogie over to that
side. I thought to myself, "That's ok, at least I'll see some of Drums
and space." Nah. 6'5 and his friend stood up and danced madly during
drums and space. and days between.
I was also blowing bubbles (a la Lawrence Welk) during Drums and
Space, but they all popped on Mr. 6'5. Some guy behind me made the
comment, "Well, at least you're washing his hair with that stuff..." :)
A few bubbles landed on Jerry. :-) When I told this to my boyfriend
after the show, he recommended not doing that again, just so that Jerry
doesn't look up, see the bubble pop on him, and go into cardiac arrest.
(sigh)....
A few mental notes about the band, etc. I made last night (whenever
6'5 leaned over to talk to his friend I was able to catch a glimpse of
the band and what they looked like up close)...
- Phil has a sweet 6 string bass and 2 thick cords coming out of it. I'm
not bass guitar literate, so does anyone know why there are 2 cords
coming out of it? He also kept fiddling with the mixing board (?) next
to him. He had the words of "Take the Ball and Go Home" taped to his
mike.
- Mickey had the giggles last night. He was freaking! Acting really
giddy and weird. It was kind of funny, actually....
- Vince looked like he was about to freeze up, fall over his keyboard
and die. He looked tense.
- Ah yes what a true rumor about the Bobby spit. Yuck! It kept
spraying into the front row...and I have now pinpointed what Bobby's
hair reminds me of. The Incredible Hulk. Except his hair isn't green.
But enough about what they looked like, I was really there for the
music which was great, except I don't feel that last night's show had
the energy that the other ones had. The first four were wonderful,
last night's was good.....
I'm really psyched for tonight! :):):) Hopefully I'll be at the
Commonwealth before the show ~ probably 6ish....

Who was doing up all the BALLOONS? by Row Jimmy, 8 had been batted
onstage. I thought it was great - makes the stage look more festive.
I had fun watching the balloons get blown around by the breezes and was
waiting for Bob, Jer or Phil to kick one but I don't think they ever did.
> doesn't look up, see the bubble pop on him, and go into cardiac arrest.
Watching Jerry when he winds up the big heavy parts of his dirge ballads -
Black Peter (come and SEEE), Stella Blue (stella bluuu-uuuuuee), Standing on
the Moon (BE with YOU) - I realized what makes Jer look so convincingly
SCARY. He gets a face that looks like he's about to eminantly expire from
a violent medical cause!
> - Phil has a sweet 6 string bass and 2 thick cords coming out of it. I'm
> not bass guitar literate, so does anyone know why there are 2 cords
I'd guess its a similar setup to Jerry, who also has 2 cord for his guitar.
The signal from the string pickups goes out one cord to his equipment rack
thru all his sound toys. then back to the guitar and through (at least some
of the) control knobs and switches. then back out to the main mixing board.
Wait that should be 3 cords.... :-) well anyway there a lot of signals
going back and forth, and 1 cord's worth of a set of wire's just isn't enough.
> hair reminds me of. The Incredible Hulk. Except his hair isn't green.

Yeah, 200 ASA. I've used 1000 in the past and have been unsatisfied with the
grain. Of course that was a while back, and maybe things have improved.
Much the same problem with 400 ASA, though the grain is much better here.
So I'd thought I'd see what the 200 could do. Yeah, my light meter was unhappy,
but you have to make choices. My camera is totally manual, with the meter
just a + 0 - indicator to show overexposure, just about right, underexposure,
with absolutely no control over speed or f stop. I don't like having
equipment that can overrule me! Off course it does sort of force you to
go to things like 1/60th and 1/30th, neither or which I'm that thrilled
with, due to the unstableness of the setting (sans tripod). But I can usually
hold fairly steady.

Ah, but what more do you want? In these types of situations, anything outside

Just curious what ya'all thought about the scene in and around the shows
this year. Personally I thought it was way cooler than last year. I never
was hassled once (except for the empty your pockets routine that one
night going in) and was told several times by the cops that having a

| Well, I didn't hang out in the street too much (too crowded) but
there did seem to be more police in the area than last year,IMHO.
They seemed pretty cool unless you gave them reason not to be. Some
of the younger cops might have been alittle jumpy...I saw one guy take
out his ticket to show his friends where he was sitting and two cops
were all over him for maybe being a scalper....I didn't really pay
too much attention to the heavy presence, myself until the parking
garage had patrolmen with dogs walking around in there the last
night...BUT....police presence did not take anything away from my
enjoyment of the festivities going on inside the Garden.... :-)

| I thought it was a little heavy-handed this year. The crackdown
on the vending scene was relentless. And whenever I saw a copy
hassling someone, they were doing it to the max. There's a guy
who usually plays the hammer dulcimer on one of the street
corners. I couldn't find him the first two nights. On Thursday,
he was set up in the corner of one of the parking lots. He had
just started playing, and I was wondering why he wasn't at his
usaul place. I planned to ask him that when he finished his first
song, however before he could finish 3 motorcycle cops pulled up
and really started hassling him. It turns out that he had gone in
extra early to get *that* particular parking space so he could
play on "rented space", "private property" and not be hassled. He
was told that although he may be on private property and out of
the way, if he continued playing and people gathered to watch
him, they would arrest his audience for loitering. So, although
he could play, no one could stop to listen. More than a few
people gathered to question the cop's rationale for making him
stop. I just didn't get it.
In another instance, on Teusday, we had gathered to drum in front
of the Tip O'neil federal building, because it was a wide open
space and away from the thick crowd. 3 federal cops came by and
told us to move. One of them sadi "this is the second time we've
told you to move." and we said, "but we just got here." To which
he responded "prove it." So when we asked where we *could* drum,
he said anywhere but here. So, we moved across the street and
within minutes were told by the Boston cops we couldn't drum
there either. We asked where we could drum and were told
"anywhere but here." "That's what they told us across the street"
we said. To which the cop replied "who would you rather be
arrested by, them or us?" Tough choice. I asked who had the
better lockup. He wasn't amused, and asked if I wanted to find
out.
Yeah, I thought things were a little heavy-handed.

I can't comment on the scene outside, but I can inside. For me it was
real close to a Grand Slam. I saw a topless lady, a young male passed
out and carried to the hospital (all handled quite well by the police
in my area), an clueless individual, running around the taping
section, who then took a swing at the usher who was trying to slow him down,
who was later arrested, making we tapers happy. About the only thing
missing from this run, that I did see last run, was a naked guy.
Come on, fess up, anybody see a naked guy this run?

harassed so badly on the floor by the ushers that they almost threw me
out (until I pointed out that I wasn't high, drunk or stupid, and they
can't just toss me for no reason). I filed a written complaint with
the Customer Service desk. Guess what? Big surprise! Nothing
happened.
On the other hand, after the Monday show, I was sitting in the Bean Pot
with a friend, having a beer and waiting for the crowd to disperse and
the parking lot to empty, when a Boston cop on a Harley with full
lights flashing, drove INTO the Bean Pot, around the bar, and back
outside again, just for giggles. Hilarious.

| Differences between the NYC run and Boston run:
(all opinions my own!)
1. Police close off streets for Deadheads (& DECheads) to congregate.
2. Vending scene in full force - multiple products sold (i.e.
t-shirts, foods, jewelry, pictures, etc.)
3. Cigarettes sold by concession stands inside of BG (at $3.50 a pop!)
Actually, I thought the outside scene was very cool. Closing off the
streets in an excellent idea and it also helps with "crowd control".
Taking everyone's advise and going in early helped with the pre-show
crush. I did think the frisking bit was too much though. They don't
do the frisk bit here (or maybe I've finally reached an age where
they're not checking me!)
Would we come up for me shows your way? Sure, but I think I'll wait
for BGII.

| I was extremely upset and disappointed with the police presence around the
garden and I called the Governor and the Mayor and talked to Howie Carr
live on WRKO about it.
The gestapo tactics used by the Boston SS were completely uncalled for and
they precipitated most of the problems that occured.
Aside from beating on people for basically no reason (I saw one guy set up
a grill in a private lot to cook some chili for his group of friends and
two cops came up and threw him into a brick wall and hit him a couple of
times and then drag him off in cuffs. I talked to his friends who said that
they didn't have any drugs and that the kid had no id cause his wallet had
left by mistake the day before), my main complaint was that twenty minutes
after the show started the cops lined up their motorcycles from sidewalk to
sidewalk on both canal and french streets and drove everyone away from the
Garden and all the way down to the other end of the street. Then they
would not let any traffic (pedestrian or otherwise) down the streets all
night. I talked to people who had tickets to the show and got there late
and the cops wouldn't let them go to the garden. I saw a group of about 10
people (a couple of which I knew) who were coming to see Slipknot at the
Beanpot and they weren't allowed to walk down the street to get to the
show. All in all a thoroughly disgusting display of human rights
violations whereever you cared to look.

the isle of the floor yelling at how he F'in hates everyone and
how f'ed up he was, a gang-boy whip out his peice on a fellow
gang-boy for a nitrious balloon....among many other stupid antics.
Doing things like going into the show early, going to the Commonwealth...

Of course the cops are going to be busting...it's a dead-show in the

me wonder, 'cause all of the shows I've been to lately have been at
the Shoreline, and, although Johnny Law is there in full force, even
on horseback in the p-lots, EVERYONE is having such a good time. The
only real crackdown has been on nitrous and fake tickets.
I wonder if the difference is because the Shorline is outdoors, sparsely
populatated area, etc., etc. Perhaps things are a bit more relaxed here.
I heard that Highgate was real relaxed too.
Sounds like one needs combat gear just to get into Garden, and that

| Kip,
The difference is not only indoors vs outdoors, it's also 6 shows
in 7 days, and for most of those days, commuters have to make it
from Gov't Center to the trains @North Station (where Boston
Garden is) to get home. Most of the hassles were to keep the
streets clear so the suits could get to the trains. The other
thing is, it gets very crowded in that little space in front of
the Garden. And then, the city feels like it should get it's
share of the vending, and local law says you need a vendors
license, so they walk around hassling people for that. But,
mostly it's to keep the streets clear. IMO, they should block off
one of the 4 streets leading to Causeway St and leave it for the
vendig scene and stop hassling folks. It seems to me that the
city of bawstin loves the revenue the shows generate, but hate
the 'inconvenience'.

I thought the cops-on-the-street was about the same as the past 3 years - lots
of them but they don't hassle you if you don't try to walk down the wrong
street at the wrong time (and are lucky).
Inside, they were fairly strict about keeping the aisles clear, but I must

it's nice to not have your space violated by aisle-grabbers.

| A quick update for those who ordered pictures:
- last week I ordered 8x10s for myself (to see how they would
come out.) Although there is some color loss (there usually is
with enlargements,) I'm satisfied with the results. The 5x7s
still look the best, IMO. (I think the smoke in the air gets
magnified as the pictures are enlarged, causing more light to
be reflected and some 'hot spots' as well as color loss.) I did
ask the folks at the lab to try and do a better job on the
8x10s.
- the reprints were ordered on Saturday. They will be ready next
Saturday. I will have them in the mail (hopefully) by Monday
morning, 10/24/94.
- I sent out confirmations last Friday. If I missed anyone, send
me mail, I'll send you the amount due and my address.
- send me a check, I'll send you the pictures. I'll cash checks
only after the pictures are mailed.
- your satisfaction is guaranteed. If you are unsatisfied, return
the pictures for a refund (I'm not expecting any takers on this
tho ;-)
Last, thanks to all who ordered. I took grate pleasure in making
these pictures available.

| Just a note to those of you who may have ordered copies from Jay.
They are VERY nice. Good time, good beers, and I even brought along
rfb's pictures that he sent with some NTTH stickers. Figured
Mark would at least recognize them ;-) ("Do you have a basset hound, too?" ;-)

decheads ;-)
