we should make a DEChead trip to a PawSox game this year. Friendly crowd, 
cheap seats and the have the best record in all of baseball! And if that's 
not enough, the Celtic Pub in Pawtucket pours stout at the right 
temperature!

    I love Fenway, I would go more than I do...I'm sure Yankees tix would
    be hard to come by, at least good seats, but bleachers, Hey, that's
    always a memorable time

    The BoSox actually play the Yanks the end of next month...here is the
    real nice part though.....They play again in Fenway end of Sept.

I was thinking about starting a fan-run buy back program so we could all chip
in bucks, buy expansion franchises and fold them...

I think if the Devils (the ones on the last 3 games and not the 1st 2) show
up that they'll give the Rangers a hard time....but only defensively.

The B's game last night - best one yet but they waited til the last game
to play it.  Whichever one of you called for Featherstone's return - good
call.  That last goal really hurt - the one Adam gave up 3 feet in front
of Casey; at least Casey hung in there and didn't flop on the ice....

Lots of good prospects for next year (youngsters).  I think they need
to beef up a couple of lines though....

    Okay, sports fans. Here's something I have to ask. Is anyone else as
    irritated as me about the fact that baseball is now split into
    *divisions*?? It used to be easy, and fun, to keep track
    of four divisions in two leagues. But no... Now we have three divisions
    in two leagues. Baseball season now goes into October. Any bets we
    could be seeing games at Fenway around Thanksgiving if the playoff
    rounds go far enough? I think the only people that can be happy about
    this are the teams in the American League West division--it doesn't
    take a lot to be in first place:-)

    re. 15 the thought of expanded basebal playoffs is interesting, but I
    don't think it'll work, where you could end up having the top 3 teams
    in the AL East finish ahead of the winner in the AL West, which means
    the 3rd place finisher in the East doesn't make the playoffs (ok, you
    have that situation with the 2 divisions as well, but adding the "wild
    card" spot really weakens the playoff setup)
    
    you could go on and on and on about it....that's the beautiful thing
    about baseball

re: baseball's 3 divisions

As Bob Costas aptly put it, "monkeys could have done a better job." The 
regular season, like that of hockey, hoop, etc., is now a long warmup for 
the playoffs. With wildcard teams you all but eliminate pennant races as 
teams will be happy to play for second. Also, the balanced schedule (e.g., 
the Red Sox will play the same number of games against the Yankees as they 
will against the Angels) wipes out the importance of division games. 
They would be better off having 1 division and having the top 4 teams 
make the playoffs. You can also have the prospect of a team with a losing 
record win the World Series. It's clearly for revenues. I say go back to 2 
divisions per league or have one league with 4 divisions, 1 team/div. makes 
the playoffs and schedules are again weighted with more games in a teams 
division than out of it.

	thanks rfb. slow start this year. last year at this time i had 22
	fish in 8 trips. ended the year with 92, took home 54 of 'em. 
	
	this year i painted the boat, so i've only been twice. it's gonna
	be hard to beat last year's boat total of 140. but damn, i'll
	have fun tryin!! ;-)  ;-)

    Ahhhh, you guys ain't seen nothing till you check out the Scotish
    Women's Rugby Team in action...although ithink the US Team won again

    caught a nice 14 inch brown SUnday, Hoot caught a 16 incher that had 2
    four inch baby browns in it's belly!! Hoolie caght 3 nice trout about

We used to have the same type of feeling in Boston.  But it's been
a few years :-(  It will probably take a few years to build the
Celtics up again.

    Take a look at it, they've come pretty far in building it already
    Rich....they had a channel 4 news team inside one day....from the steel
    frame, the layout looks much more spread open with more access to
    bathrooms and different levels..they even have  a time lapse camera
    filming from next door so when finished, we can see the construction of
    over 1 yr happen in a minute and a half....

    Tough loss for NJ last nite. But Martin Brodeur (sp?) shirley has made
    a new fan!!! He was fan%*#&^#tastic last nite!!
    
    Good luck to the Rangers. They may need it after coming off that very
    physical series only to face the well rested Canucks.
    
    In other sports news, the Red Sox lost and Yanks won :^( I hope that

Steve,  I wouldn't say that "home ice" thing with any confidence.  All those
skeletons are coming out of the closet now :) They may not be able to

Yea,  it's just a personal thing;  I love the back and forth game like
they've been playing where the goalie stops most of the shots and you end
up like 2-1.  It's fun to watch all the gaols but some of them were plain
sloppy goal tending (easy for me to say :) :)  

Last night was the 1st night I actually wanted to see the stRangers win.  
I have a hard time liking a team that has so many ex-Edmonton players.
See, the only one I can stomach is McT (he would've been a great Bruin
... he was good when he was here but he's gotten better...).

I mean *How* can I pull for a team that has EISSA "I'll bite Janney's cheek
off" Tinkannien (butch job on his name).  He's enough to make me puke.  :)
I dislike him....I don't like the Oilers either so it's been tough pulling
for the Rangers.

    the way it looked this AM, the Canadins rilly took it hard....:'( lot
    of scary stuff happen up there...but as a complete surprize the NYers
    seemed to be to damn happy to fight ! 

Good game.  I wasn't a big fan of Gregson's after the 1st though.  There's 
nothing worse than delay of game and I saw a Ranger fall and grab the puck 
twice only to have Vancouver called on the other end for a questionable
forecheck that lead to the 2nd Ranger goal (but the "forecheck" was called
after Anderson took a stick to the head).  Bure needs to mature just a little
bit....they are young and will be back.  

Good game though....lots of action and exciting right to the end.  

I heard they "rioted" up in Vancouver after the game.  One person fell from
way up on a pole and he died.  No knifings or shootings in the reports I
heard anywhere....

    so what about the World Cup ? I watch two games over the weekend. not
    bad I must say, I got into the Italy Ireland game....what I rilly liked
    was that the game was 90 minutes long (2 45 minute halfs) and the clock
    never stopped ! it was like watching a field full of energizer bunnies,
    they kept going and going and going.....and then at the end the Refs
    will add time to the game due to injuries that occured during the game
    which as far as I could tell noone know that amount of time but the Ref !
    
    
    it was neat to watch ! very refreshing compared to say a baseball game!

    Yea, I liked it too, I've never watched World Cup
    before yet I found myself disagreeing with the refs
    on some of there calls.  Must be the sports fan in me.
    To me, its more exciting than the other once-every-four-
    year-sporting-event, the Olympics.

Soccer is a wonderful game.  I caught about 35 minutes of the Switzerland/
USA Game and thought the US played very poorly.  They will have to do 
better than that if they want to be in this event for very long.  THey were 
much to hesitant and when on offence did almost no passing, just run and 
shoot.

I love World cup FOOTBALL (soccer for U.S. citizens 8-).

  The last world cup in a semi-final match, (can't remember who) one team 
 ran out of substitutes and had another injure. the guy had his head wrapped
 gauze and came out to finish the game.

The Knicks were not impressive at all.  I would have told Starks after game 5
"lay off the 3-pointers, you're not hitting them".  Why they didn't go to the
rim every time is beyond me.  The Knicks are clearly not an outside-shot kind
of team.

Oh well, I thought they might be catching up late in the 4th....

    Well the USA team lost on Sunday but they still have a chance to move
    into the next round...now in no way did I figure this out, its in the
    paper and well I don't have the braincells in my head that would beable
    to figure this out :')
    
    the USA finished in 3rd place in group A with the record of 1-1-1
    giving them a total of 4 points. they scored 3 goals and gave up 3
    goals. to get to the next round the top two teams in each group advance
    and the best four teams in 3rd place (out of the 6 groups) advance also. 
    to understand which 4 teams in 3rd place advance it gos like this...
    
    tie-breakers are as follows in order; goal differential, goals scored,
    head-to-head, lots.
    
    so for the USA to NOT make the cut, four of the five scenarios would
    have to occur.
    
    GROUP B - Cameroon beats Russia by at least 3 goals AND sweden does not
    lose by more then one goal to Brazil.
    
    GROUP C - S. Korea beats Germany by one goal and Germany scores at
    least two goals AND Spain beats Bolivia or S. Korea beats Germany by
    one goal and Germany scores at least two goals AND Bolivia beats Spain
    by at least two goals.
    
    GROUP D - Bulgaria ties or beats Argentina AND Nigeria ties or beats
    Greece.
    
    GROUP E - either Irland-Norway or Italy-Mexico ends in a victory and
    the other game ends in a tie, with the tie game finishing 3-3 or
    higher; OR both games end in a tie at 3-3 or higher.
    
    GROUP F - Saudi Arabia beats Belgium or plays a 1-1 or higher tie AND
    the netherlands beats Morocco or plays a 2-2 or higher tie.

    I was just thinking (again), and now that the USA has embraced Europe
    Football...maybe we can now bring such wonderful Europe sports like,
    hummmmm the running of the Bulls ! Well 1st of all the animal rights
    people would not go for it one bit, so we (USA) could kinda change the
    rules a bit to say something like the Running of the rush hour traffic
    of Rte. 128. (to the people who do not know what rush hour traffic on

Actually, that sounds a lot like what football was in it's original
inception.  Injuries and deaths (and probably lawsuits) have done
much to shape the helmets and padding.

    I like the helmets and padding of american football.  They
    keep players healthy and actually increase the force of hits
    players inflict on each other.  Players can deliver a blow 
    without too much worry about getting injured.
    
    I do agree that american football needs to be hurried up.  I
    wouldn't mind seeing something close to near constant 
    action like european rugby.  What's the difference between
    australian rules and the rugby that is commonly played in 
    college clubs and local teams in the US.  or is this austr. rules?

    	Once again I made it up to New Hampshire Speedway for the Winston 
    	Cup race, a good one this year!  Besides drinking as much beer as 
    	I could pack into my 14' cooler, I saw lot's o' spinouts, car 
    	contacts and excitement, but luckily no major accidents (except for 
    	the guy lighting off the fireworks).
    
    	Much to my surprise, and joy, Ricky Rudd took the race. 
    
     	I definitely wasn't too thrilled to see Dale Earnhardt take the lead 
    	in lap 290 (it was a 300 lap race) and the person I root for (Rusty 
    	Wallace) was in a rather set back 3rd place and struggling.....but 
    	whoa, wait a minute, it's Ricky Rudd in 2nd place, now blowing
    	the doors off Dale Earnhardt and taking 1st....YEEE HAWWWW...I'll
    	drink to that!!!!! And I did!!! 

    "Australian Rules", or footy in the vernacular, is derived from Gaelic
    football, a bit like rugby only more violent :-)
    
    It isn't as bad as it appears; there are restrictions on tackling that
    are mostly observed. Each team is 18 players, with positions and
    tactics not unlike field hockey or soccer for that matter (there are
    some significant rule differences though, no 'offside' for example). As
    in basketball, you cannot run with the ball unless you bounce it.
    
    There are surprisingly few serious injuries, and US football
    ("Gridiron") is generally regarded as a game for wimps. Career
    footballers usually bang up their knees or ankles over time.
    
    The name is misleading, as it was primarily played in one state until
    about 10 years ago. It was centered around Melbourne, my home town. If
    you can imagine a city the size of Boston (say, within 495) where 10 of
    the 12 teams in the league played each Saturday... Footy totally
    dominated the media and you simply didn't venture out on the roads
    around 5pm Saturday when a few hundred thousand drunken footy fans hit 
    the streets. It can be an ok game to watch, but I really loathed all
    the crap that went along with it.

    seems like a major difference is that ya hafta bounce the ball
    in Australian rules, unlike in Rugby.  Do they have the "scrum"
    in footy? And is scoring similar?

    Nope, no scrum. I don't know how rugby is scored (last one left alive?
    :-)), but you score 6 points in footy for a goal (between the larger,
    inner goal posts) and 1 point if you get it between the smaller, outer
    goal posts.
    
    Bouncing the ball takes a little practice, but it is no harder than
    dribbling a basketball. I could never get the hang of passing, where
    you sort of punch the ball out of your hand. You are not supposed to
    throw the ball.

    Thought I'd make a few comments on the Gaaahhden, but move it here to
    sports...I don't like the Garden for shows, somehow, thankfully in my
    years of concert-going, I've been lucky enough to only see 2 concerts
    there...Jackson Browne '80 or '81, and the Dead '83 maybe ??
    
    but ya gotta love the atmosphere at a sports event there, my first
    Bruins game back in '72 I got to see Mr. Bobby Orr, I have pictures
    from that game, and I treasure those...he even scored a goal...and I've
    been to only 3 Celtics games, but was lucky enough to see Larry Bird
    play once, a few years back...
    
    I'll miss the history and "pain in the *ss" of it all, there will never
    be another like it...I am looking forward to the new place though...I
    have always been bummed the the Worcester Centrum wasn't built big
    enough to accomodate the Bruins and Celtics ona regular basis...it
    would do so much for Worcester, it's in a much better place to get to
    as far as access in and out of the city...and Acoustically it sounds
    grate, and it's a damn shame about the problems that will never see the
    Dead back in Worcester

    I gotta agree with Wes, da Gaaaaaden is something to behold as a sports
    hall....and in 1910 Rock-n-roll was just not around....I've seen some
    B's and C's games and half the fun of seeing a game is the Gaaaaden its
    self ! its hot it smells like stale beer...I love it ! how many NHL
    play-off games get canceled because of Fog and a power failure ! only
    one that I can think of ! never saw Bobby Orr play there but I have had
    the pleasure of skating with him in Westborough :') did see Larry's
    last game at home...in the skybox seats ! and I saw the 6 91 shows
    there and if the seat sucked at least I had fun with Fog complain to
    lisa about which way to go and park !

	I have great memories of the Garden.  My dad had season tix for
	the B's for years (60's/70's) and I got to see a lot of hockey
	with Orr in a crewcut, and thru all the glory (Cup!) years.
	B's vs the Russians in '72 was something I'll never forget - it
	was such a big deal back then!   Aerosmith in '75 or '76, my 
	first real concert, even buying fake tix for Pink Floyd in '75
	(DSOTM tour!) and getting rejected at the door :-/  oh well...	
	
	But the place is old and the air is stale and the sound is bad.	
	And if you ever drop anything on the floor there, you'll never get
	the stench out ;-)

	I'm looking forward to the new garden with the bigger ice surface
	which will hopefully result in less knee injuries, and better sound/
	acoustics (which I hope they plan for!).  I just wish it was still
	being called the Boston Garden.  I really dislike the Shawmut Center
	for a name.

    well, I miss baseball a Lot...I love the game, and there is nothing
    quite as exciting as a good pennant race...and my favorite National
    League Team, The Montreal Expos, were on their way to post-season play,
    and boy, was I looking forward to going to Montreal for a World Series,
    but alas, the Strike...I think owners and players are both at fault,
    and I'm pretty bummed about no baseball...I'm a die-hard Red Sox Fan,
    and yes, I even miss watching them play out the rest of the season...
    
    BUT, I for one, am Psyched about the NE Patriots this year...well, I'm
    not a bandwagon fan, so I'm always watching, but this year should
    continue down the path to the playoffs, and the appearance in a few
    years in another Super Bowl...and what a Grate way to start off the
    season, by playing those dreaded Miami Dolphins...

    Hey...i watched Syracuse and Pawtucket battle it out last night, and i
    even thought they played pretty well....who needs MAJOR leaguers
    anyway???

    foxboro was packed!!!!!!!
    i have not seen a crowd like that in years except for the dead
    shows.... funniest thing i have ever seen was the shot Jim Kelly took
    from 2 pats defenders and he starts walking off the field afterwards
    only he's going to the Patriots' sideline....one receiver caught his
    attention and he starts to turn around only to walk BACK towards the
    trots  bench....his bell was rung hard...Bledsoe took a coupla
    nasty shots as well....a hard hitting good football game.....and how
    about that Michigan-ND game????? one of the better college matchups i
    have seen..

    my bud from home with season tickets to the trots has an extra for
    the raiders game on sunday..anyone interested in joining the madness?

    Well the C's looked alittle better last night than the first 6
    games of the preseason.....dino may be coming into this own....
    but the team has shelled out some big cash for deadbeats (MMMMMMM

    together i will look into acquiring ticks in Nash Vegas.....

    Missed the C's...as I was at the Centrum for the Worcester Ice Cats.
    for those who are not hockey inclined, the Ice Cats are Wormtown's
    new team in the AHL (American Hockey LEague) this is a good level of
    hockey, most teams in the AHL are farms teams for NHL teams, as of now
    the Ice Cats are not affiliated to an NHL team, but they will be maybe
    before the season is over...
    
    many former NHL players are in the AHL, and the Ice Cats have Walt
    Podubny, Rob Melanson and former Boston Bruin John Carter..who is from
    Woburn or somewhere local...Carter basically drank himself out of the
    NHL, but is sober, and back on the road to the NHL...
    
    Ice Cats beat the previously undefeated Binghamtom Rangers 4-0 for
    their 2nd win of the season, and their 1st franchise shutout...
    
    lotsa seats available, and cheap tix too...this may be a cool choice
    for a Dechead sporting event...there's a bar "Challenges" across from
    the Centrum that has good selection of good beers...Adams, Pete's etc.

    a little more info on tix...the $12.50 best seats are not available for
    groups...the end seats and most rows of the 200 sections are $10.00, and a
    group of 15-49 gets a discount of $2 on each ticket, for an $8 ticket...

    I think we'll end up in that number of folks, based on response so far,
    and for $8/ticket, that's pretty good...the January games should be
    available no problem...I would have to mail a check no later than a
    week before the game we choose, so at this point, I'll put this as "to
    be determined" and we already have roughly 17 definite and maybeeees
     
    once we decide a definite date of 1/7, 1/14, or 1/28, I'll discuss
    method and time of payment...this would make a nice stocking stuffer
    for the little hockey fan in your house so keep that in mind...
    
    having been in several seats there, I would pick end seats (not the
    corners) or even the 1st row of a 200 section on the side...no glass in
    front of you, and being up a bit helps too...

    this a.m's newspaper had an article concerning the arrest of patriot's
    running back sam gash's wife after the game on sunday...from what i
    read she made an illegal u turn and then did not stop when asked by 
    state policemen..after being handcuffed she claimed racism was the root
    of her arrest....Dee Brown faced similar harassment when he signed
    with the C's....does this seem to be a recurring trend for 
    beantown? I thought that Boston was one of the first cities to
    break the racial barriers in professional sports?

    yeah, I find it distressing that Boston has become known as a racist
    city amongst black athletes, especially when I believe (and my history
    may be wrong here) Boston was the home of "The Abolitionist" the anti-
    slavery newspaper during the Civil War ??

    i am wondering whether we as New Englanders are viewed this way? I know
    at UNH where i went to school with a student population of 10,000

    the Pats game was a good scene all around....
    pulled into the lot across the street from the Stadium at 9:45 and
    proceeded to tailgate like tailgaters should..got in right as the Jets 
    players were being announced shot up to 211 and grabbed our seats..
    good defensive showing from the Trots.....nice INT that nailed the 
    coffin shut...now with Buffalo beating the Dolphins the wildcard is
    anyone's game... now to snag that extra for next weekend!! :^)

IF...

...Buffalo loses to the Vikings next week and Miami loses next week and we 
beat Indianapolis (good chance), we'll be tied with Miami for 1st place:-)

It's nice to be able to get excited about a football team.  I always liked 
football and followed my teams but growing up in Philly and then living in 
this part of the world it has been hard to get excited.

    us Boston area folks we have not had a winning team (any sport) for
    something like 6 years maybe 7 ! (when did the Celts win last anyway).
    Red Sox and the Bruins (along with the rest of the leauges) can't finish
    or start the season....the Celts are in the re-build years (they done a
    lot to keep us happy IMO)...the last time the Pats made the Superbowl
    who in their right mind would have believed they could beat the Bears 
    (well OK I did, but I can claim insanity can't I ?) but this time they
    seem to be on an upswing not a hanging by a thread swing ! yes I admit
    that I have been taken in, I feel like Charlie Brown trusting Lucy to
    hold the football as I start running up to kick it, and this time she
    will let me and not pull it away at the last moment....AAAAUUUUGGGH !

    i think as Boston Sports fans we have also taken for granted that we
    will have a championship basketball team every year and then when the
    Big 3 started to get old and the team started to falter people started
    being overly critical.....history repeats itself and sports goes in
    cycles, as does most economic, social and life systems..i'll trade 
    3-4 years in the sh*tter for the # of banners hanging from the rafters
    any day of the week compounded by the ability to hang more....
    as for football, we could be st louis/baltimore etc and be scurrying
    to re-acquire a ball club, after having lost one..so while it's there
    SUPPORT IT!

    of those were won before you were even born...:) which isn't a Bad
    thing, after all, the Sox last won the World series before my Dad was

in colorado we saw places that had killians listed as an import

Sort of related, though not to sports ;-)  We get the New Mexico magazine,
as we happen to like New Mexico.  Every so often they'll run a column
at the back called "One of Our States is Missing" about the various
clueless individuals who call up and want to know what sort of vaccinations
they'll need to visit New Mexico, and whether or not they'll need their
passport.

    Once when I was working at the Very Large Array radiotelscope in New
    Mexico, I had reason to go out to bid on an image recorder (to be hung
    off that greatest of *ALL*  minicomputers -- the PDP-11). As this was
    back in the Stone ge when they still HAD PDP-11's (1977) therefore an

    All of a sudden...even i'm a believer...Bledsoe coming back yesterday
    after 4 INT's...absolutely incredible...and even the D looked good.

    
    Spending the day yesterday at Foxboro Stadium with Chris Leblanc, and 
    much to our surprise Don Mitchell, is a great excuse to get drunk at 
    9:00AM with tons of crazy people...also, seeing a game like that
    restored my dwindling faith in the Pat's.....real cold!!!!! but the
    beer was flow'n real hahd!!!!!!!
    
    Not only was it an awesome game but I had the pleasure (well sorta) of 
    meeting someone who was directly involved with the Lake Carmi Bonfire 
    Incident (tm), I believe his name was Drool Bredsoe??? ;-)
    
    Good game....I recall Bledsoe giving up a couple passes, one of which 
    was a major setback to the Pat's when the guy caught it and ran the 
    whole field only to score....perhaps that's why Drew decided to run a 
    couple on his own....did a pretty good job a couple times.

    including losing 2 times to Miami....so, for all those other teams that
    are 7-6, I think we want them to lose...like KC tonight...it's still to
    tough to figure out, but it may be simply put:
    
    1. Pats won't win division unless they win next 2, Miami finishes with
       only 9 wins
    
    2. they are still alive for a wildcard spot, but prolly need some help

Ice Cats fans, unite !!!   OK, here it is...a vote !!!  I want to put this out 
for a vote folks, we're voting on what date should be the Dechead trip to the
Centrum for "Your Worcester Ice Cats !!!"   these are all Saturday games, face 
off at 7:35pm.

1/7  vs. Cornwall   (FYI, Slipknot is in Maine this weekend :)

Howzabout if we vote by next Wednesday 12/21...most votes wins, hopefully we'll
get 15 or more folks for the $2 discount on tix...kids 12 and under would be
$5.50, while we'll be going for $8 each....FYI, I will try to get the first 2
rows of section 201, which is an end, but it's the end that the Cats shoot at
twice, and noone would be in front of us...good seats.

    Why does Notre Dame get to play in a major bowl on New Year's Day, when
    they had a mediocre season in which they lost every big game on their
    schedule.  Sheesh, they aren't even ranked in the top 25 this year. 
    They play 4th ranked Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl.  They get to go
    because they are Notre Dame, not because of their talent.

    Lou Holtz is a weenie..always was always will be....gave the shafteroo

    Another good argument for a playoff system in college Wes...
    if Nebraska was playing Penn State then we could see who was the better
    team and eventual champion as opposed to who played who/beat who/who
    has a tougher schedule/who leads the AP/UPI/coaches poll crap.....

Same reason we are forced to watch the New York Football Giants close to every

    with Emmit nursing that hamstring pull they even have a shot at pulling
    themselves back into the playoffs by beating Dallas this 'Saturday'

if you're not counting OJ in your count of 2, then i'd guess that you need
to up your count.  i know that OJ was on the cover of Time and Newsweek in the
same week (with the identical picture, in fact, except that Time altered
the photograph to make him look "blacker", something that just hints a bit at
racism, imho), and i'd find it hard to believe that he wasn't also on the cover
of Sports Illustrated at least one week in the five weeks that would count as
a three week period coincident with him being on the cover of Time and
Newsweek (but i don't know for sure, it's just a hunch, considering how he
was plastered everywhere, and not just in tabloids, but in forms of news media
that allege themselves to be respectable and not just sensational, even if the
hard-copy mentality has invaded them too)

	An early 4:00 faceoff time is a major motivating factor for sure!
	Oddly enough this is the ONLY afternoon game at the Centrum, 
	a marketing mistake IMO.  On the schedule I have from the IceCats
	office monday's game is listed for a 7:05 start, but I had heard
	thru notes that it was a 4:00 start.  

	If they had weekend games at like 1 or 2:00, we'd have been there

    Ken, I agree withya...the Saturday afternoon Bruins games are pretty
    popular, and the Ice Cats draw well on Saturday nights, but could
    probably do a bit better with an afternoon schedule...it is so family
    oriented that it makes sense they'd have more early games...

    suggestion...I think being the 1st year they'd be open to make some

    my brother attended the Ice Cats Christmas party on Monday night, he
    and the family got to skate at the Centrum...cool stuff...the word is
    that next year the Cats will be affiliated with either the Dallas Stars
    (formerly the Minnesota North Stars) or the Anaheim Mighty  Ducks, of
    the NHL...this oughtta get some better players, as they will be the
    farm team for one of those NHL teams...

well, if a sports team, a female, an animal, and 2 males, were each
individually on all of the covers, that would take at least 5 weeks.  so does
that mean that the female and 2 males were all on the cover together, of all
three magazines?  i doubt that the horse was on the cover along with the
hockey team.  although i suppose if the jockey was pictured with the horse,
that would count as a male plus an animal, and if then only a male/female pair
would also be required to be together.

    and 1/28...they are in the AHL (American Hockey League)...most teams in
    the AHL are "farm" teams of NHL teams...Worcester isn't yet (this is
    their 1st year of existence) but next year will be affiliated with
    either the Dallas Stars (formerly Minnesota North Stars) or Anaheim
    Mighty Ducks of the NHL....GRATE level of hockey as da ve pointed out,
    some former NHL players in the league, 3 Ice Cats are former NHL'ers...

    fwiw, there were 11,147 or so fans at the Saturday game...3rd largest
    attendance this season in the entire AHL, Providence owns the 2 biggest
    crowds of the season, but for a 1st year franchse, the Ice Cats and

    I'm boderline obsessive/compulsive with Hockey (ask my wife!). I'm
    really hurt by this lockout. Here was a golden oppurtunity by the NHL
    to cash in on baseball's greed and get new fans etc... What do they
    do argue over who gets X_millions of $$$  ... while meanwhile I bust
    my butt at DEC [ do I have to mention what my wages are 8-) ]. I HAD
    NESN but dropped it & I don't know if I'll subscribe again. I probably
    will cause I love Hockey and my Wife does too... I'll more than likely

    I thought the NHL strike was unfortunate, not only because of the
    baseball strike, but because the NHL playoffs were much more exciting
    than the NBA playoffs.  Sports Illustrated made many comparisons of the
    NHL to the NBA, and with the end of the NHL season this past year, the
    NHL waas looking to make big strides.  Then they all shot themselves i
    the foot.  When the the strike was looming, I thought they'd be stupid
    to let this happen on the heels of such a positive previous season for
    the league.
    
    January is an awfully late time to be starting a season.....I felt it
    should have been canceled by now.

    I agree with Mr Maggard...hockey is a rough sport and long season....
    what is the median salary in the NHL? and what is the life expectancy
    of a player? i am sure the former is not on par with baseball or hoop..
    life expectancy is probably like football and the toll the game takes
    on one's body is huge....granted i don't feel "sorry" for hockey
    players and don't sympathize fully, they do have a gripe and it was the 
    guys who signed their paychecks that were shafting people...
    now to stand in a field of grass, catch a baseball and hit home runs..
    THAT is worth 5 million a year!?!?!?!?!?! BAH!
    

    I agree that the NHL blew a huge opportunity to attract fans big time,
    with the baseball strike, and as stated, moreso due to the grate
    playoff season last year...the NBA is starting to bore me to tears, the
    rules apparently have changed, guys are taking 2-3 steps before they
    would even be remotely called for travelling...it's more of a side-show
    these days than a sporting event...
    
    with the Rangers winning the Cup last year, the NHL could even made
    inroads on the network tv scene, instead of just NESN, TV38, and the
    occasional ESPN game...I think both sides are wrong, but unlike
    baseball, I think the NHL owners were more wrong than the players. They
    held up their end of the bargain by showing up for training camp, and
    then were locked out...the owners want to OWN the rights to a player
    from the time he's drafted at age 19, until age 32...
    
    would you want to work for a company that prevents you from looking at
    another company for work for 10 years or more ??  I'm with the NHL
    players on this one...
    
    and baseball...sigh, let's hope they don't screw up again, we could see
    a record setting season in Boston with Jose Canseco if they play a full
    year...he should easily hit 30-40 homers at Fenway alone :)))))))

    I'mnot sure if this is relevant, but, in comparing the two sports,
    the baseball players wnet out on strike at the end of their season.
    Most contracts are written with quarterly payments in advance. So in
    essence, the baseball players took their last paycheck, and then went
    out and didn't play. The owners lost money big time on this one.
    
    In hockey, the owners "learned" from baseball, and tried to avoid that
    situation.
    
    The real losers in both cases are you and I, the fans, and all of those
    people who sell peanuts, and popcorn.....

I was upset that I didn't bother to go out on Sunday and try to purchase Bruins
tickets (even though I knew they were going to be on sale).  I want to see the
B's this year because I've never seen them and this is the last year for the
old Garden.

But, I went to Ticketmaster today during lunch and got a pair of obstructed
view (Stadium 6, row K) seats for the game against the Rangers on April 1!!!! 
I hope the view isn't that bad.  Anyone know what these seats are like? 
They're definitely in a corner, specifically, the Phil Corner (tm) to make an
analogy.

    	Plan on standing up at the end of the (stadium I think) section. I
    bought these for a Penguins game [of course Mario was hurt 8--(] a few
    years ago. you could only see part of the ice because the Balcony hangs
    down hence the obstruction. It wasn't that bad standing.... I also had
    Balcony Obstructed seats where the obstruction was a pole you could
    easily look around.

    rfb that's right....he took a clean check at center ice, collapsed, and
    died from cardiac arrest...his Dad was in the stands watching the game,
    EMT's tried to revive him but couldn't...a freak accident...the initial
    findings of the autopsy apparently showed no trauma to his heart,
    nothing out of the ordinary, and he was an otherwise healthy kid...there
    are blood tests etc still coming, but one cardiologist said that he may
    have taken the check at the split second when the heart is "waiting" or
    about to start it's next beat....
    
    Very Very sad, and Very Scary...I have a nephew that plays high school
    hockey,and is a goalie...so he voluntarily tries to stop the puck...
    standing behind the net during a game makes one wonder why NE1 would
    become a goalie, but there ya go...

    A check IS when contact is made during play, rfb, between 2 opposing
    players...this kid Messing took a CLEAN hit from an opposing player 
    and fell to the ice...pretty sad and damn scary

Something like this happened in Tampa about five years
ago.  This kid was playing little league baseball, and
was hit squarely in the chest by a pitch.  Fell down
dead right there, apparently of cardiac arrest.

    seriously though, body checks/hitting is not the same as the fighting
    or goonism that can happen in hockey....an opponent has the puck, your
    aim is to get it away from him...you can try to take it away with your 
    stick, he may skate around you, or you can "hit" him...a clean hit is
    not violent, it IS part of the game...
    
    I don't know how to explain it any better than that, but although the
    results may look violent, a good hip check is really not violent...and
    players are penalized if a referee thinks a player has "intent to
    injure" such as swinging a stick or a cross-check to the back of the
    head..that's the violent part of the game that I don't like either...

    The athletes make too much money, period.  Regardless of whether they
    are entitled to it, the aquisition of such huge salaries have had a
    horrible effect on their egos.  You can't coach these guys, because
    they make 5 times as much as the coach, and these days the money talks.
    
    They all think they are bigger than the game.  This has become
    especially true in basketball.  The NBA became very popular because of
    high quality competition and exciting games.  Now everything is image,
    its like MTV basketball (as many have said).  The NBA has made a
    mistake in overly promoting players who have not even proven
    themselves.  Take "Shaq" O'Neal for example.....he was made an icon by
    the NBA before he even accomplished anything.  It isn't right.  In the
    past, players had to earn their fame.....now it is demanded.  (by the
    way, I don't mean to point out Shaq as a whiner, I actually think he is
    one of the better behved in the league).
    
    Sure the owners have been making gobs of money, but their wealth has
    not affected the play on the game.  Now that the players are getting
    filthy rich too, the game has been affected (poorly) by it.
    
    Its also a reflection of our whining society to an extent.....

I'm with Deane-o. A few runs to Pawtucket and taking in the games of the 
new team in Nashua. I've actually been tired of the major league level for 
a few years. I think it goes back to 1987 when the Sox paid Rich Gedman 
$1m+/year after leading the league in 1 category the previous season - 
passed balls. I'm not irked at either side more than the other, I just 
don't think the sport should be excluded from anti-trust laws.

	From what I saw on Ch 4/Bob Lobel, the highest priced $50 seats
	are going up to $70, representing the biggest increase.  The
	slightly lower priced seats just under that are going up about
	1/2 that.

	I thought I also saw that $29 seats will still be $29, same for the
	current $18 seats remaining the same at $18.  Also thought there was
	another category that remains the same price.

	So the increases in price are being absorbed by the highest priced
	seats.

	I can't vouch for my memory, but that's what I recall.  Makes sense
	that they'll do the same for the Bruins tix.

Yeah, ch 4 went into the price distribution of seats last night.  Ken almost
has it right.  NONE of the balcony seats are changing price, and I believe
there were 3 levels of balcony pricing, rather than 2.  The globe has the 
breakdown, balcony remains at 39, 29, and 18, and more than 500 seats will be 
specially priced at $10 (per game).

    i was under the impression it was for april only..
    we got upper box between the bullpen and foul polein right field
    section 4  for 8 bucks
    yesterday we got upper grandstand sec 4 for 6 apiece.....
    friday we could sat behind home plate if we wanted...
    i think they may let this go seeing the attendance is waaaaay down
    we baited a couple of scalper scums on the street and asked them how
    much for bleachers (knowing prices already)
    they asked 10 apiece and by the time we reached the counter they
    had conveniently dropped them to 3 for 10  :^)

Fenway is 85->90% full (according to attendance records in the papers).

As for the 1/2 price deal .... it was for April only (4 games total).

    I'm also pleasantly surprised at the Sox starting pitching, no one
    expected these kind of performances from the staff as a whole.
    
    Clemens has been overated for 4 years now.....I certainly feel that he
    should take a spot in the Sox rotation when he returns, but I don't
    have any expectations of him beyond those of the other starters.  I
    would not consider him "The Ace" by any means now.  And this has
    nothing to do with his being a prima donna, this has to do with him
    getting rocked consistently over the past 3 years.

documentary mini-series?

Speaking as someone who has always HATED baseball, I've really been enjoying it.
 My son, Joe, is a baseball nut, which is why it caught my attention, but it's
really a terrific story...

    and have two more (1960's, 1970-present) to go.  Though it is very
    long, I'm enjoying it a lot....lots of interesting stuff, and info that

    I think Burns has done a great job with the baseball series... I'm a
    baseball fan, and I didn't see the 1st 2 "innings" but I did see the
    rest of it... baseball may not be as "popular" as basketball (YAWN) or
    football right now, but it still is an interesting barometer of our
    society...witness the attendance at ball parks this year...folks are
    more willing to stay away, and send a message that we won't put up with
    all this strike/lockout garbage any more, and IMHO the message that is
    being sent isn't directed to just the players, it's directed at the
    owners as well...
    
    ya just gotta love seeing the old films of Cobb, Ruth, Williams, Aaron,
    all the Robinson's...the old parks, the old uniforms...cool
    
    baseball was SO important as a fabric of our society before the advent
    of mtv etc and the shortened attention span of the collective populace,
    it's not as important now...you don't have the cross-town rivalries you
    had in the past, (Brooklyn Dodgers, NY Giants, NY Yankees etc) but it
    may be going thru a resurgence of interest...look at Cleveland, where
    they would have 2-3,000 fans at a game at Municipal Stadium, but now
    with the new park, they draw so many more people in...I like the new
    parks, built exclusively for baseball, without astro-turf...the way the
    game was meant to be played, on grass, no roof overhead, fans close to
    the field...THat's Baseball...
    
    baseball is a Grate game...especially when the Sox are in first place

    Yeah, I'm particularly happy about the new ballparks being "ballparks",
    not "stadiums".  I"m reading a book called "Play Ball", about major
    league baseball, the author (John Feinstein) described the new parks
    like Camden Yards, the new Comiskey Park as being real good
    old-fashioned balalparks, not the "cookie cutter" style all-purpose
    round stadiums like the ones in Pittsburgh, Cincinnatti, Atlanta,
    Philadelphia, etc.....the ones built in the early 70's.  I thought the
    term "cookie cutter" was appropriate.

    well, 1st of all "replacing" Fenway would be tuff...building a new park
    for the Sox would be nice, only if it's done in the tradition of a ball
    park that's built only for baseball...at least we have the new parks as
    models to use for the way it should be built...it would be cool if they

Be careful . . . I saw several people get busted, handcuffed, and thrown in the
paddywagon for selling tickets.  There were several undercover officers around
soliciting scalpers.  It's illegal to sell a ticket at the park, even for face
value or less.  From what I saw, both the buyer and seller get nicked.

    I was in Phoenix recently in the vicinity of a Sun's game, and was
    amazed at all the people 'scalping' tickets openly.  I then later found
    out that it is not illegal to sell your ticket on the street there.  I
    don't know about price guaging.

    Down here at Camden Yards, they have roped off an area where people
    can purchase other's extra's at face value only, and have it patroled
    with security, this just started this week. Interesting concept

    Anyone who reads the papers can think of at least one case where
    patient needed a liver transplant and didn't have enough clout and
    or money to make it happen quickly or quickly enough.  For gods
    sake - there is a list!  Do people get on a list because they DON'T
    need a transplant?
    
     

    valid point...I certainly find it disheartening that Mantle gets "star"
    medical treatment simply because he is a baseball legend...same with
    David Crosby...just because he's a celebrity or anyone's a celebrity
    shouldn't get them priority...but, such is our society that puts
    celebrities on those pedestals and gets them preferential treatment...
    
    ya know, friggin' Kato Kaelin (talent/star/celebrity that he is...NOT)
    would get priority over the average you or me...
    
    I feel bad that Mantle drank himself to this condition, but there are
    prolly younger folks with families who need a transplant just as much
    as him...

Are we saying here that someone else on the list was

There's more to being on the list than chronology. 
Tissue typing is critical (literally) to a liver
transplant.  After all, liver transplantation is
relatively new technology, isn't it?

If people are having to wait longer as the well-healed

The media reporters aren't gonna come knocking with their cameras if Mr. Liver
Surgeon tells Joe Blow Citizen he has to wait for a liver transplant.  But if
Mr. Liver Surgeon tells Mickey Mantle he has to wait in line, then the
reporters are gonna come knocking.  This is why Mr. Mantle gets what he wants
... nobody wants to look bad on CNN.

But the REALLY sad story is...

That if they *HAD* told Mantle he has to wait 6 mos. just like everyone else,
then maybe, just maybe there would be a National_Campaign(tm) for liver
donations...  and maybe, just maybe, EVERYONE on the list would get one, and
soon.  And maybe, just maybe, due to the increased media coverage of the
"organ donor crisis" ... people who need hearts, lungs, kidneys, etc. would
all benefit 'cause more folks like us would sign up to be organ donors.

The lack of forethought on this is fuggin' stupid if ya ask me.  :-(

    something that was pointe out to me at lunch is that we have no idea
    whether or not Mickey Mantle was on a list or for how long...  getting
    put on the list isn't news...  going in for the operation is...  it may
    well be that he has been waiting for quite some time but that we're
    only hearing about it now that he's going under the knife...  David
    Crosby too, knew long before we did that he needed to go for an
    operation...  it's just not news until something is actually
    happening...
    
    thre's also the tissue typing stuff that Tim mentioned tht i thought
    of too after putting in my note...  but also, on getting passed up,
    people get passed up for medical care EVERY DAY over ABILITY TO PAY,
    so once more, money talks while everyone else waits in line....  (and 
    yes, i have some recent personal experience with this that proves

Hey, calm down everybody.  While I'll take it with a grain of salt, there are 
a few things you should take into account.  Mr. Mantles condition was VERY
serious, and it looks like he would not have lived long without a transplant.
This tends to bump you up in the list.  I'm not sure what to make of this,
but the news I heard this morning said that he suffered from liver cancer
caused by Hepatitis C which he may have gotten due to numerous blood transfusions
he received in operations to fix sports related injuries.  But certainly 
his heavy drinking contributed to the condition of his liver.  Further, the
tissue match was was done against a list of numbers, and Mick was just the
number that first matched.  Now, I can see people saying, and I might be one
of them, that sure, it was just a number, but everyone knew WHICH number
Mick was.   In this day of peeking into everybodies garbage and under the
bed, I'm sure that if there was a better match with a number higher in
the list, we WILL hear about it.  For the moment though, I'm willing to 
believe that it is a lucky coincidence (except for the person who's liver it
originally) and give him the benefit of the doubt.

There was a guy from an organ transplant foundation on sports radio and again
on wbcn this morning regarding Mantle.  He *sounded* pretty knowledgeable,
being a recipient of a liver himself, about how it all works.  According to
him, there was no preference given to Mantle.

PeterT brought up some of the same points he made. His condition was very
bad, and he'd certainly die in short time without a new liver.  That Mantle
got it is a matter of timing, being in the "right place at the right time",
with the right match, etc etc.

Personally, I'm amazed he got one so quickly.  But I can't believe it's just
coincidence - there must be someone else out there who'd match who also has
very limited time.  Supposedly 8 or 9 people die a day waiting, today I guess
that will be 7 or 8.

    next available liver...The program weighs all factors including how 
    sick the recipient is now and how long they might live while waiting...
    The average person is on the list for 6 months...For someone in as bad
    shape as Mr. Mantle is supposed to be in the average wait is 3 days...
    still, you can't help but think that maybe celebrity status was
    involved...

    first round Sweep of the Legion team, moving onto the 2nd round of
    softball playoffs...we won the 1st game 2-1, last night 6-0, Legion
    scored 1 run in the top of the 1st inning, 1st game, da Hunters held
    them scoreless for 13 straight innings after that to advance...
    
    Sox trade Mark "the arm" Whiten for Dave Hollins, who delivers a big
    base hit in last nights Sox win...too bad Whiten struggled at the plate

    Dwight Evans patroled out there...

    Maddux pitched a great game last Friday (in place of that stiff Clemens
    "ohhhhhh, my elbow hurts!" ;^).  I don't know much about these guys,
    but I know that both Maddux and Cormier have pitched well lately.
    
    I just read Stanton's stats in RED_SOX notes:
    
    	ERA:             6.00
    	Innings pitched: 18
    	Hits allowed:    32
    
    Ummmm....here's to improvement with the Sox ;^)
    
    It seems like public opinion is turning on Clemens very quickly.....his
    last outing (8 runs in less than 2 innings) followed by another veiled
    excuse, which turned out to be nothing.  For the first time, no one is
    buying it.  I really do hope that he gets his act together, because the
    Sox need him to get back to form.  However, he admitted that he arrived
    at spring training 27 lbs overweight, and that he did not work out much
    during the strike.  He was caught by surprise when the season suddenly
    started.....and at this late stage in his career, he could not afford
    to do that.  For 5M/year, he should stay in shape, strike or no strike.
    Very disappointing.....

    they should treat it like every game is their last...
    
    as far as those numbers on Stanton, the hits/innings concerns me, but
    for a reliever, 'speshlee one who has only pitched, ahh, how many
    innings was it?  the ERA may not be truly reflective of how he's done
    in regards to setting up the closer etc...and they say he's tough in
    the post-season, so hopefully he'll help that way in October...

	I wish they'd do all pro-sports like they do pro football, where
	you can get cut for lack of performance. Pay for play, and vice versa,
	and that's it!   That would keep a lot more athletes in shape.   

	Clemens $ is probably guaranteed, so a lot of incentive goes out
	the window if you are not championship driven, which Clemens evidently
	is not.

    YUP...Roger pitched another good outing, without getting a decision,
    but if he keeps pitching like that, it's good newz...a successful road
    trip for the Sox, 8-2, with the two losses being the shutout in Detroit
    against a great pitching performance, and the loss in Texas when Gator

Some sports people have no sense of humor.  Last night's top ten list on
Letterman was something like the Top 10 Horrifying things you didn't
about Cal Ripken:

played in 426 games consecutively.
      Perfect attendence at the local Hooters too!
      According to Mrs. Ripken Cal is not exactly an "Iron Man" at home,
if you know what I mean.

Ok, some of these are in bad taste, but hey, it's Letterman, and I thought some
were pretty funny.  On the morning news on WBZ, Ch 4 Boston, they replay the
top 10 of the night before, and the sports announcer (Gil Santos of WBZ radio
and various sports announcement for Boston Teams) rates them 1 to 10.  Now 
yesterday's, which was Top 10 things overheard at the Women's conference
in Beijing, got an 8 from Santos, and some of those were pretty poor.
The one on Cal Ripken?  Big fat 0.  

Sigh, some people can't take a joke when you point it somewhat in their
direction.

    PeterT, Gil is sort of an idiot at times anyway...the other day he
    thought that Ripken should tie the record and sit out a game so that he
    and Lou Gehrig would forever be tied...that's bogus un-called for
    sentimentality methinx...records are made to be broken, and that's what
    Hank Aaron, PEte Rose, and now Cal Ripken have done...shattered some of
    the all-time "never can be broken" records...though Ripkens feat really
    stands out among them...
    
    this takes Nothing away from Lou Gehrig...if he didn't come down with
    ALS, he prolly would have kept going to a point where the record may
    never have been broken...here's a stat to show Gehrig's greatness...
    
    from 1927-1939 he AVeraged something to the toon of 154 rbi's, 39
    homers with a batting average of .350...that is F'n AMAZing over a 10
    year period...Gehrig is one of baseball's all time greats, and will
    always remain so, despite that Ripken has "outplayed him"

    OK, Clemens is pitching great now, and though I said he was "toast", I
    guess I was wrong.  And I'm happy to be wrong!!
    
    I think Lou Gehrig is my all-time favorite player (despite being a
    Yankee).  He was a class act, an awesome player, one of my biggest role
    models as a person and a baseball player (I play 1st base too).
    
    I don't mind seeing his record broken, though I didn't think until a
    couple years ago that it would ever be broken.  It could only be broken
    by a player who truly loves the game and who is unquestionably
    dedicated to it (I don't think that the likes of Rickey Henderson could
    even think of approaching this record).

    I got a little teary-eyed when he went round the park. It
    reminded me of Yaz day.... Class act that Ripken. I read 
    where the equivalent of his record to the working class folk
    would be to work 8 yrs straight without a sickday!

While there is a lot of talk about this new record never being broken, I can
imagine that someone like Cal Ripken will come along again.  On the other 
hand, my choice for a baseball record that will never be broken is Connie
Mack's lifetime record for losses as a MLB manager (somewhere near 5,000).  
I once calculated that if Butch hobson (then the youngest manager in MLB) 
had continued to manage the Red Sox to similar last place finishes every year
until he was 80 that he would still not break Connie Mack's record.

A baseball life is one of long hours, lots of days away from home (spring
training and 81 away games per year) and *always* having someone trying to
take your job.  I know my family would not take kindly to me being away
for three full months each year.
