397.0. "Brief jams in Songs " by PONDA::64423::BELKIN (the slow one now will later be fast) Mon Feb 28 1994 15:09

This note is for listing (Dead) songs that have other brief jams of
(Dead) songs in them.

I was listening to 9/28/72 Stanley Theater yesterday. In the big wind-up
wah-wah jam near the end of Greatest Story, Jerry breaks out into a few bars
of St. Stephen (or is that spelled St. Stehen ? :-)

Jerry's riff actually has a few different notes from the St. Steve riff
(darn, too bad this isn't Mosiac and I had an audio hotspot <here> to click
on that riff!) but its definitely St. Steve.

So, I got to thinking, are there any other versions of Greatest Story that
have the St. Steve riff in them? (If there are, I'd bet they're from late
'72!) Does anybody know?

Another song with another song in it to list multiple versions of:
Dark Star, with the Feelin' Groovy jam. Most famous example: 2-14-70
There's at least one more, isn't there?

I guess I want to exclude songs with obvious, "named" jammed-out sections,
like Truckin' > Other One Jam > whatever, or Playin > UJB > Dew > UJB > Playin.

One of the nites of the '90 Albany run I remember hearing repeated Dark
Star references in Bird Song. I kept thinking "ok they're gonna break
into Dark Star any minute now" until I realized that we were still in
the first set. But then again 8-16-91 Shoreline blew that theory all to
    hell.

I have a tape from 74 in Vancover, BC with a unbeilivable
China Cat > I know you rider where they break into a Uncle
John's Band Jam (g,c,d,c) chord prgression (I think). You can
    definetly tell it is UJB.

That same jam (China>U.J.B. instrumental>Rider) is on the 6/23/74 Miami Jai
Alai Fronton show too, if I recall....(Thanks Josh!)

Hmmm.. checking deadbase - you must mean 5-17-74? Or do you mean the 6-22-73?

The Miami Jai-Alai Fronton China > Rider is on 6-22-74. Opens the second
set.

I am still completely convinced that during the MSG run of 9/90, I heard
Jerry play a bit of St.Stephen during Space. Of course, there was a certain
amount of zen anarchism going on at that time ... the height of human
comedic achievement being a person who repeatedly asked the soft drink
vendors how much they were charging for their wares ... but I really do think
I heard it.

I have filler on a tape from 06/04/70, I think it is, with
a few opening-of-China Cat riffs and St Stephen in NFA.
	Helluva jam.

There's lots more out there, but they're hard to remember.

Also the other night at Oakland it was reported that Cosmic Charlie
teases were all over the Other One.

Shakedown St. also has some mini jams in it....I have one from
Philly 85', where it sounds like "Hard to Handle" in the middle
    of it....

Also versions of Dear Mr. Fantasy, where you can definetly hear that
"Hey Jude" thing going on even though they never sang it.

I also had the same experience during 10/14/89 Brendan Byrne. It ended up
being China Doll. Anyone who heard a scream shortly before it started now
knows where it came from :-)

Well this note's been interesting. I played 6-22-74 last night and grooved
on the UJB riffing Bobby does in the intro to I Know You Rider :-)
Couldn't stop there and rewound the tape to Sugaree...

Hey I just got in a hot tape where Jer breaks out into a volcanic St. Stephen
riff in the middle of Stella Blue.

Yeah - there's some great bass work by Phil in that Miami jam too...and
more than once, I might add, I've heard Slipknot pull off the same jam
in the middle of China>Rider (e.g. Plantation Club about a month
ago)...I had been listening to the tape that day, and grinned
    ear-to-ear hearing it that night...

one of the tapes I was listening to lately - now what year was it -
it was Boston maybe 92 (they all roll into one sometimes ;0) -
anyways, when they started into drums I thought, oh Victim...but it
-was- just drums...clearly a sampling that Bobby latched onto to start
	up Victim with afterwards...
