379.0. "Low DAT Tape prices" by SAHQ::SWITTS () Fri Oct 29 1993 14:36

I know there is a base note for taping equipment and that type of stuff
but I was afraid no one might see this note if I put it there unless
they went looking for it. Anyway, I recently broke down and bought a
DAT deck (Sony TCD-D7 portable) while I was recently out in SF CA for
training and it just so happens that Jerry was playing at the Warfield
2 of the 3 nights I was on town. BTW - I paid $558 including tax for
this deck vs. $650 in Atlanta not including Tax !! If you are
interested in getting one let me know and I will send you details on
    how to order one.

Anyway, the reason for this note is that DAT tapes can be pretty
expensive and I found a place that has the best prices I have found by
far !! They carry Maxell, Sony, TDK and Panasonic. I ordered
Panasonic because I heard great things about them. They carry these in
    60 min, 90 and 120 minute lengths.

    The place is:

    W. B Hunt Drugs Co
    100 Main Street
    Melrose, MA 02176
    617.662.8822

Ask for either Al Rizzo (owner) or Steve McCloud (who I talked with)
to make your order. Tell them you heard it from me, Randy Switts.
They have great customer service, they put me in a Data Base and gave
me a Reference Number so from now on all I have to say is my first name
and my ref number and they have my credit info, mailing address,
purchase history and more. It'll be great not to have to reiterate
    that with every purchase.

Hope this helps someone save a few bucks and save on frustration...

    Regards,

    Randy Switts

Welcome to the Bread-N-Water Club!!! ;-)

BTW, $558 incl. tax is a great price for a D7!

One thing you MUST do (if you haven't already) is to send a message to:
    [email protected]
and get signed up on the DAT-heads mailing list -- make sure to include the
word 'subscribe' in the message. It's an incredible resource for
information (e.g. cheap sources for D7 accessories!), and is a fairly low
noise/volume mailing list.

Another thing to do is find a wet-cleaning tape (if you still can). Since
the feds outlawed CFC solvents they've gotten scarce, and there's nothing
else that's really good for cleaning a DAT transport with (alcohol and most
other solvents will trash the pinch-roller). Dry cleaning tapes don't
really clean the heads, they just push the dirt around -- or so it is said.
Competent professional service is the best, but it's expensive and slow.

re: cheap tapes

I usually tape with: Panasonic 120s (from Rizzo) for $6-$7, and new/used
Data 180s (from Munson) for $11 new and $9 + 1 free if you buy 10 for the
used-once variety. I used to use Denons, but they gunk up the heads too
much so I switched to the cleaner DDS and Panasonic tapes.

I just got a few new DDS 120m (240 minute!) tapes from Art for an
at-home-trial. I haven't had the time to sit down and really test 'em yet,
but I'd be wary of using them in a portable. I usually buy from Art,
because he gets me the tapes faster and for less shipping $ than Hunts (Art
is in CA, Hunts is in Boston -- go figure!), and the fact that the data
tapes are cheaper in terms of $$$/minute (and a whole Dead show fits on one
tape! ;-). Art occasionally runs specials on his used-once generic 90m DDS
tapes for $7 each, by announcing them on the Well and on DAT-heads -- you
have to mention the ad to get the price...

The vendors below (from the DAT-heads market posting) offer the best
prices and service. I think Bob Ramstad has hung-up the tape-selling
business and is now into SCMS stippers, FWIW.

FWIW, I went to one those small computer fairs that appear in various parts
of New England, there seemed to be a few people buying up used DDS tapes for
DAT use. This was at the Nashua Sheraton Tara, but they travel around various
hotels etc. I have a schedule at home if anyone is interested.
