	I walked outside and it started snowing.....how nice!!!!

    well it looks like it might be very slippery out there....small fast
    driving snow is still falling here @.5" so far

    It's snowing very dangerously and *I* drove from TWO to MKO just now.
    I left TWO at 1 and got to MKO at 2:30 .... a usual 35 minute ride.
    45 mph was it for me and many of us.  some guy in a ranchero was very
    upset with me going so slow so he blew by me to show how annoyed he
    was.  A couple miles up 495 he was off the side of the road with the
    front of his truck sticking straight up in an unnatural position.
    he and his buddy were walking around it and I gave him the thumbs up
    sign when i went by.

I spent friday evening driving to Maine in that storm.  Took almost 6 hours 
for what is normally a 3 hour drive.  Then an hour after I got there it all 
turned to freezing rain and then Saturday morning to rain and washed away 
all the new stuff, then went back to snow that night for a grand total of 
about 2" of new snow.

On the bright side we're (NH) supposed to get 6-8 more inches tomorrow 
afternoon and evening:-):-):-)

Well, I blew out of work early on Friday to head to Franconia NH.  We left
Littleton MA at 15:00 and go to our destination by 18:30 or so... usually
takes 2.5 hrs.  I love to drive in the snow.... I love to haul in it 'cus
you can, if you know the limitations of your car... snowed all the way up
to Franconia.  The notch was WILD!!!  snow was going every which way....

by morning, it was rainin a bit.  i skied cannon on sat.  ZERO lift lines!
mostly overcast w/ some drizzle, then eventually it turned back to snow.
I must have skied nearly 30 runs.... mostly down avalanche where the bumps
were (some big suckers near one edge and the cream-cheese snow helped make
'em big and soft!)....

about 5 below last night up there.

    Today should have something special for all us skiers!!!  And the
    report says the new snow which is expected today will not be rained
    on or melted off before the weekend.  That's the only time I get
    to ski so I'm psyched!

Hey JC!  I was at Cannon on Saturday, too!  Damn.  Too bad I missed ya'!

Pretty crusty in spots, but the trail edges were nice!

Grate day except for the 360 I did on the franconia parkway on the way
home.  Luckily traffic was stopped in both directions (which was what
caused the spin in the  first place) so even though I crossed lanes, I
didn't hit anything (the passengers were rather impressed :-) ).

< 6" within 495, turning to rain tonight...but only in the south shore and Boston

Chris, I'm anxiously awaiting the weather quiz ;-)

    NH is north of Central Ma (which if ya didn't know by now is the center
    of the universe !) but anyway I got a 4 mile ride home and as far as I 
    can see its covered with snow ! beyond that, hell it could be sunny for 
    all I know ;'p
    
    but yes I will be playing a weatherman on the 27 of Feb. on our local
    access station.....it will be a live show, making fun of morning tv of
    the likes of Goodmorning America & The Today Show.....we hope to have
    some live guests, but we don't plan on letting them know its a joke...
    one hopeful guest is a local Cop :') I will also be doing an expose' on
    breakfast places in town, from the Micky D's & Burger King's Drive-thru
    to rill places to eat....

Unfortunately I gotta travel down to Maynard for a meeting at 2:00.

    just before I left the house this morning I heard that there was a
    multi car pile-up on 495S at Rt 9/Mass Pike (nowhere near Rt117 exit) 
    but I would guess the roads are very slick, right now we are in a FOG

    Gee, I didn't have any trouble on 495 today.  The accident was, 
    I believe, actually on rte 9 by 495 (though maybe we're talking about
    different accidents).  Snow was falling, but lightly, and I wouldn't
    expect any accumulation.  Rte 3 southbound looked bad, but I don't have
    to worry about that till tonight when one can hope the roads have
    cleared a little.

    what we have learned today is that by the time you climb a flight of
    stairs it can stop snow and the sun will be shinning....now we need to
    see if it will work the other way ! so if you can go down a flight of

	I am so glad winter is making a surprise appearance
	this year!!!

	I look at the snowbanks on the side of the road and
	the kids sledding and having fun...it brings back
	fabulous memories of my childhood when the snow fell
	hard and bountiful and my winters were never boring.

	I'll be tobogganing at the infamous Nashadic hill 
	in Concord Center tonight...can't wait.

	It's time to be a kid again!

Lemme see, more playing outside this weekend for me:


sat. i went for a good long walk in the sarah-doublet forest in littleton.  
i broke the trail through the fresh snow.   it was afternoon so the snow was
a bit wet... i had fun making enormous snowballs (4' in diameter) by rollin'
'em downhill... must have walked about 5 miles or so.

sun. i climbed mt watatic.  lots and lots of snow out there.  easily 2-3' of
snow on the ground.  i climbed to the top, had a brew and some oats, and walked
around for a bit... the ski trails looked very delicious - i even saw 2
skiers (a boarder and a alpine) getting ready to crank.  Lots and lots of
snow.  drifts were very deep - some as deep as 6' !!  the snow in the woods
was beautiful!!!  quite, peaceful, and just plain nice!!  


so, if this week's weather remains on the cool side w/ NO rain, I think i'm
gonna climb watatic from the northside (ski trail side) and take a run or 3.
Anyone game?

I was thinking either Sat or Sun.   There is _A_LOT_ of untouched snow on
those trails, at least what i could see.   and, it is an easy climb!!!

i finally tried out the trails behind our house (Callahan State Park) this
weekend; i rented a pair of telemark skis to see what they were like; i felt
like a had a bit more control going downhill than with XC skis, but i still
felt pretty insecure at times; i think next time i need some pointers from
someone who knows what they're doing

but i did have a blast skiing; i went on both saturday and sunday; absolutely
amazing weather; it's really cool being able to ski simply by walking out
your door, and not even having to drive anywhere

According to NWS Severe weather logs, some parts of Texas are getting pelted
by over and inch of hail and its snowing as far south as Corpus Christi. I'm
not a storm tracking expert, but if you ask me, it looks like the storm will
blow out way south of us.  Anyone have the _latest_ forecast from NWS?

Jamie, a gif file is a standardized graphical format that can be displayed 
on a workstation or almost any computer with a graphical display, like a PC 
or MAC.

	Fog, is that the one that resides on meddle?

	I have a program called WX that updates the 
	gif files on a bi-hourly basis so you don't
	need to copy each one at a time.

	Not bad for a pee-on....aye?

	I am looking at this mornings and this afternoons
	in comparison, and it is clear that the storm is 
	headed to the North East but slightly more to the 
	west than this mornings predictions...I think because
	the storm is to the west we will have greater 
	accumulations in the 128 area....because storms are
	always more powerful to the west of the eye....
	and to think...this was only a little thunderstorm
	yesterday....

	Obviously a product of the moons gravitational pull!

    The storm may look like it's tracking south of us, but the weather
    reports of the last few days show the jet stream bending pretty far
    south and then rushing north along the eastern seaboard.  That will
    cause the storm to come up our way.  If we really get clobbered, I may
    have to eat all that cheese cake I'm making tonight, instead of
    bringing it over my friend's tomorrow.  Sigh...such problems ;-)

    Use ftp and username anonymous.  It should prompt for a password,
    and the acceptable password is your mail id.  Actually it will 
    accept anything, but mail id is a pretty standard convention.
    You have to do it through ftp though, as this lets you into a 
    very small subset of the system.

i've lived in N.E. all my life - we'll see how this one shapes up for real.
i've seen many weatherpeople say "2 feet of snow, drifting, etc" and we
end up with a dusting of snow... this seems to happen more often!


i predicted the "BIG ONE" for this year.

i want to see blizzard of '78 matched, and, if possible, exceeded (in the
snow fall dept).
   
    

just called pinkham notch -  6" - 12" predicted in the whites.

Well, the snow is tumbling down at a good clip right now.  Lots and lots
of wind, some heavy gusts...

Lots of drifting.  the plows are having a hard time keeping up with the
constant drifting.  i expect to lose power eventually ... my MSR stove is
standing by.

probably go skiing this monday... not sure though.

i'll probably go for a walk later tonight....  i'd say we've got about
10" so far....

	So what'd everyone do during the blizzard....

	I had a group of people over my house and we boozed 
	it up all day....seems like everyone I talked to 
	during the storm was tie'in one on   :-P

	Went sledding...and involuntarily ate snow....

	We made sure we had all the right supplies: food, beer,
	movies, etc.   Then we waited for the storm to start.
	The awesome power of mother nature sure showed up in
	Charlton...  it was as intense a storm as I ever remember.
	Like a hurricane during a blazing snow storm ;-)  Everything
	going sideways.

	Took a walk to the other end of my land with Timmy in the
	sled, out to the shelter I built a few years ago.  We watched
	the storm from the hill and it was quite the show!

	Didn't lose power or cable (thank God ;-).

	I started the process of using the snowblower to clear the
	driveway at about 8 am sunday.  There was about 15 to 24''
	of snow depending on where you looked.  About 10 mins after
	I started what would have been a 4-6 hour job, an old friend
	shows up with his plow and does the whole driveway in like
	3 minutes ;-)  I sure was psyched!!   Spent the time after
	that building an igloo for the kids.  Took about 1.5 hours.
	They went in it for about 15 seconds ;-)

I spent a lot of time watching the snow blow up the valley
toward my livingroom windows, and then over the hill behind
me.  It was fascinating to watch it all blow around.
Never lost power, and the wood stove kept things warm.  
Didn't feel like drinking much, but I slept a lot.

I had two feet of snow at my front door yesterday, and
six foot drifts in front of the house.  Had to dig out of
the house just to get out the door.

On saturday morning, at the very beginning of the flurries,
I went to Market Basket in Westford to pick up a few odds
and ends.  The 'now serving' sign at the deli said '20',
as I picked my number: 71.  I found it odd that I couldn't
get milk, since they were sold out, even though I live
next door to a large working dairy farm. ;-)  As I was
leaving, there were a couple kids & moms with a table
selling Girl Scout Cookies.  I have no doubt that they 
got cleaned out immediately....(I bought two).

I think I've gained five pounds since Friday.  Moo!

    About 8:00pm on Sat. my wife and I put on our X-ctry skis and headed to
    my mother's house about 3/4 mile away.  My sister also live in the same
    building.  Boy were they surprised to see us show up!  Kinda funny as
    they thought we were crazy for being out.  The weather had slowed down
    by then so it was no big deal.
    
    On Friday evening we went to the local book store and each bought a
    fresh book to amuse ourselves.  My wife is a conpulsive reader and once
    she gets into a book she will not put it down.  She consumed a 570 page
    novel on Saturday.  My book was only 400 pages and I still have about
    20 to go.
    
    Drank some burgundy and ate heavily garlic'd hummus using pita bread as
    a scoop.  Made beef stew on Sat and had a nice fire going.  We really
    enjoyed ourselves.
    
    I'm bumm'n for the folks who were killed/injured by this thing but I'm
    also glad to hear that no one died in NH as a result of the storm.
    
    Oh yeah, our son (15yrs) had the T.V. to himself all weekend and he
    watched about 20 college basketball games.  He was in heaven!

    I spent much of Saturday preparing to lose power.  And then never lost
    it!  Cool.  I got some propane for our barbecue, just in case.  And
    then split wood for an hour or two.  And took a walk with Hannah
    down the road and made a few snow angels on a big rock.  Snow angels
    don't seem to work too well on almost vertical surfaces though.  Maybe
    if the snow was wetter ;-)  I only had to carry her the last few 
    steps.  And then we took the sled around the house for ride or two.
    We cancelled out on getting together with our friends.  We probably
    could have made it there, but I wasn't too sure we'd ever make it 
    back.  Had an early dinner, got the kids to bed, and then watched
    "The Commitments".  Then spent about 3 hours digging out on Sunday
    morning.  And got a call to come over the friends we'd cancelled on 
    Saturday.  I think my friend just wanted a taste of the cheesecake
    I baked up Friday night!  
    All in all, a much friendlier storm (to us at least) then the one
    that hit in December.

    Spent saturday recovering from multiple courses/bottles of
    wine at Harrington Farms in Princeton (best restaurant I've
    come across in central MA!). Spent sunday shoveling out. Boy
    am I sore today!

    I went skiing Saturday evening after spending the day waiting for

    I think I got dumped on Sunday so it doesn't leave me thrilled or very
    talkative about the weekend.

i drove home from amherst; basically that took most of my weekend; didn't feel
like leaving friday "night", because by the time friday night was over for us
it was already about 4 AM; woke up and headed out on the road in the blizzard;
driving actually wasn't that bad, and except for the one time that i pulled
into the passing lane without sufficiently slowing down to make it over the
hump of snow in between lanes, i was getting along basically ok; then all of
the sudden it felt like my car lost about 50% of its power; i was able to pick
up decent speed on the downhills, but going uphill was limited to about 20 mph;
we managed to make it to the next rest area, at which point the car sputtered
to a halt; the guy at the service station thought it might be moisture frozen
in the fuel lines, so he suggested we put in some dry gas (what the hell is
that, anyway?); well, getting that to circulate into the fuel lines would
require the car running, which unfortunately wasn't happening; so, we asked if
we could at least push the car inside the garage to let it warm up and thaw a
bit; no-can-do; there's a garage there, but nobody's allowed to use it;
wonderful turnpike regulations; so, i call AAA; lo and behold, that wonderful
24 hour Emergency Roadside Service that's supposed to help you anywhere,
anytime, isn't applicable on the Mass Pike; more stupid turnpike regulations -
they only deal with a private contractor, AAA isn't allowed; apparently this
also holds true on the NY Thruway, Maine Turnpike, PA Turnpike, NJ Turnpike, GS
Parkway, etc.; so, i call some (long distance) state police number, and they
give me another number to call; get towed, ironically by some guy who has AAA
signs all over his place; yet he won't honor my AAA card, because I was on the
Pike; anyway, the problem actually wasn't too major - cracked distributor cap,
allowing snow and random moisture to accumulate inside; but try finding a parts
store open in a blizzard; so we left the car there and called a friend to pick
us up (who got stranded at our place because his car was able to make it into
our neighborhood but couldn't handle the hills on the backroads); i picked up
the part on sunday and got driven out there to get my car

so that was the highlight of my weekend; i always make fun of the people who
run out to the store just because of bad weather, but i was kind of bummed
on saturday night that we only had 3 beers left, and no milk; we managed
ok, though - went through a couple bottles of wine and then dipped into the
liquor cabinet :^)

My guess would have been #1: water in the electrical system (wires, distr
cap), or #2: water in fuel line. Looks like it was #1.  While you needed to
replace the distr cap, a cheap fix to get you off the pike might have been 
WD40, not another reggae band ;-) but the silicon spray.  It's helped me 
out countless times, and I'd *never* travel in one of my vehicles without it.  
All you do is spray the distr cap, spark-plug wires, and everything that the 
wires go to (rotor about the size of a soda can), and it removes water/allows 
the electrical current to flow so you can run your vehicle.  My bro in law
broke down on the pike once and was all bummed out after getting it towed.
A quick spray of WD40 and he was off an running, and quite happy ;-)

AAA won't help you on the pike ???  Wow, that's BS.  And good to know, I have
considered AAA before but not now.

we thought about trying a quick fix; but given the fact that there was a
blizzard going on around us, we weren't too keen on having the car break down
and leaving us stranded on the pike; had it been sunnier weather, i think
we would have risked heading out if we could have done something to get the
car going again, but i don't think it was worth the risk given the
circumstances

    MOVED ! yup Jen and I moved ! started Friday afternoon (@3pm) spent
    Friday nite at Hotel Fields (Mom & Dad's) hit the bed at 9 woke at 6am
    �finished up (all the big stuff at least) just as the snow was
    starting to drop.....hit the packey/food store got home and watched the
    snow fly !!!! Sunday got up to dig out at 6am.....got the cars out and
    moved a few more thing......took Sunday afternoon off to relax and set
    stuff up.....

This storm didn't come close to the intensity of the '78 storm. no way.
it was done and over with in under 24hrs....  great storm, but, absolutely
nothing like the media/weather people said it was gonna be!  no one I knew
even lost power!!!

btw, under the "old" blizzard rules, this one would not have counted as
a blizzard in this region (MA)... the old rules used to say the temp had
to be below 20F the entire time of the storm... they changed that./. i guess
the weather people got bored 'cuz they couldn't call anything a blizzard
anymore!!!!

went skiing today.... the top of loon mt. was closed yesturday due to high
wqinds... hence, today was the first day the top part was skied.  26" new
up there.   AWESOME CONDITIONS!!!!!!!!!!  EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least at the beginning they were saying blizzard-like conditions.  A 
true blizzard is Temp's of lt 10 deg F and winds greater than 65 MPH with 
snow.  It sould basically be a flurry and still be a blizzard.  This was a 
nice (read real) snow strom, however it was not a blizzard.  We got about 
3' as close as I could figure.  We had 6-8' in some places and 8" in
others.  Saturday night I made pizza for the family.  We put the kids to 
bed early and then watched Far and Away.  Great movie.  Sunday Morning I 
was up at 6 with the kids.  By 8:30 I was shovelled out enough so that I 
could move the cars when our landlord got there with the plow.  Sunday 
afternoon my Mom-in-law and bro-in-law came up and I made home-made pasta 
with a killer sauce.  The left and I immediately curled up on the couch.  
By 10 I had a fever of 102 and was up most of the night.  Spent all 
yesterday in bed and though I'm at work now I still feel lousy and haven't 
had anything to eat since sunday afternoon.

All in all a fun storm though.  There hhas almost been enough snow this 
winter, even for me...

    This was a big storm - it nailed 25 out of 50 states, over 3 million
    people without power, shut down nearly every east coast airport, 110+ 
    deaths and they haven't reached many locations along the AT yet, record 
    cold temps, record low pressure, over 50 tornados, thunder and lightning
    while it's snowing, hail, sleet, etc. The list goes on and on. The
    storm did lots of damage to locations that just are not prepared to
    deal with that much snow (eg Birmingham, Ala. - 18"). This may not seem 
    like a bigger storm than in '78 to us, but that's a rather provincial 
    viewpoint. IMHO, the storm did indeed live up to the name "the Storm of 
    the Century".

Well, yes, if you consider the force of the storm on the country, perhaps it
was quite bad.  Didn't hurricane Bob top this one though as far as damage
and deaths go though?


The effect this storm had on MA still doesn't compare to that of the '78
storm, imo.

I've never seen a storm that was blowing rooftops off in Florida and
causing a freighter to sink off the Atlantic Maritimes in Canada and
raising havoc all points between.  

That sucker was BIG (78 was big for N'east; this was HUGE in comparison).

    Let's see, the storm of '78.  Hmmm, I was in Albany then and I doubt
    we even had foot of snow out of that.  What blizzard?  C'mon, that was
    a wash!

    Really, though, the storm of '78 was pretty localized.  I went home
    to Lon Gisland the following weekend, and they were still digging
    out.  And to Boston the weekend AFTER that and they were STILL
    digging out.  But in Albany?  Pfffft, just a normal old snow 
    storm.
    
    But this storm hit Albany, and Syracuse, and Rochester, and New York,
    and Boston, and Washington, and Alabama, and....
    So while we survived fine here, others were not so fortunate or 
    prepared.  I really don't know how much snow fell by us, because it's
    drifted all over the place, and there was already a good 4 to 6 inches
    of hard packed stuff in our yard.  But the swing set in the back looks
    a bit strange with only about 2 inches of clearance under its seats,
    and as I got out of the car yesterday and climbed over the pack of 
    snow by the side of the driveway and walked on the crust towards
    the front door, I found it amusing that I was clearly above the 
    level of the front steps and travelling down toward the front
    door.  Luckily the wind had blown enough clear so I could open the
    door without shovelling.
    As far as I'm concerned, this storm was MUCH worse than the lizzard of 
    '78, but, I never really saw a blizzard back then.

    The Blizzard of '78 just stopped over New England and hung there for a
    few days.  This one moved all the way up the east coast and didn't
    stop.
    
    I took my dogs for a long walk Saturday afternoon....it was quite
    intense.  The snow was blowing sideways, and at one point seemed to be
    blowing pure ice in my face.  Outside of getting ice ripped into my
    face, I had a great time :^)  At one point I just lied down in the
    snow, and my 5 month old puppy just curled up beside me and tucked her
    head in her paws to keep the snow away.
    
    Personally, I'm ready to move on to the next season, and am ready for
    winter to end.  I can take the cold, and the skiing was grate at
    Wachusett last night, but I won't be disappointed at all if all this
    snow melts in a week.

    The Spring Thaw
    
    On side effect of all this snow is the potential for some
    *serious* flooding once the spring thaw sets in.  A lot depends on how
    fast the thaw comes but in years past with a lot less snow there have
    been areas completely inundated with water.  In the So. NH area,
    Milford, Amherst, Wilton are prone due to the runoff from the Souhegan
    River.  Nashua is prone from the Nashua River and many, many other
    communities can probably look forward to some water damage.
    
    If it gets warm fast and for more than a few days, LOOK OUT.
    
    I've seen 3/4 of the Amherst Country Club underwater.  Rt. 122 closed. 
    The Millyard area of Nashua completely covered.  Other low laying areas
    are in for some serious moisture.  Some people might consider taking
    some steps now to check this possibility.

i hope my aunt's ok; i guess if they're heading out this early they must have
been prepared to handle a bit of cold and snow (there was about half a foot of
snow on clingman's dome in the Smoky's about this time of year 2 years ago when
i was there, so it can't be that rare), but i do think about a foot of it all
the way down in georgia has to be a bit unusual

    Mt. Mitchell in NC got 50". I don't think your aunt is that far
    north yet though. Helena, GA (~2500') the first town on the AT
    got 18". Mountains certainly got more. I hope your aunt has enought
    food to lay low until the snow melts.

This is really a rip-off.  The mafioso who run these roads take a fixed per-
centage off the top of gas, restuarants, auto service, etc.  I think the number 
is like 15% off the top.  That's why services on these roads is almost always 
so expensive.  (After all, it's a captive audience, in a sense; "limited 
access" is limited egress too, especially if you're just passing through and 
you're unfamiliar with the area.)  I used to work on 
the NY Thruway, and they wouldn't let a guy come put his friend's disabled 
motorcycle on a pick-up because he wasn't an "authorized" (read - doesn't pay 
the extortion fees) service person.

I'm convinced they use the cash from this racket to pay toll-collectors so 
they can take more of your money.

    approximately 3 weeks, more or less. However, you could probably get a 
    good 3-4 days of food out of yer boot leather and maybe another 2-3
    days out of a sweater. :-) In all reality the snow shold be gone soon
    if it isn't already. They shouldn't be laid up more than a day or two. 
    I expect that a lot of folks will bail after this storm.

    almost forgot to answer the question. You can probably live on water 
    alone up to a month or so without causing any permanent damage to your
    system. After that, you'll certainly undergo irreversable damage. Your
    actual milage will vary.

Besides the fact that even in deep snow cover there is plenty of food up

	It may not have been much here but I had the good fortune to catch
the scenery in New York from a train window on Wednesday ... after a days worth
of rain which melted *alot* away.  Let me tell you, from Syracuse down to
Albany got *dumped* on.  43" in Syracuse!  Before anyone beats me to it I'll
say it first, not only is that more than � my height but more than � the height
of most (if not all) of you as well.  SUNY Buffalo closed school Monday ...
and Buffalo gets no less than 6" per storm and no less than a storm every other
day - this is not counting lake effect snow.    

these are places used to handling snow.  At my brothers in Georgia they don't
even own shovels and snow boots - let alone snow tires and plows!

     so. NE? i heard on a providence radio station this morning that it's
     supposed to be in the sixties tomorrow?! think i'll climb up on the
     roof tomorrow for lunch and catch a tan 8^) .....hope we have *grate*
     weather for albany!!!

    I've only heard the extended forecast from yesterday and from that I
    expect light rain or drizzle to start the weekend out. So I'm packing
    my foul weather gear, well the top half, for the weekend and if I don't
    need it Great!. I missed the forecast this AM, I'll try to catch it
    tonight and post what I can derive from it. The forecasts come from 
    Logan area and are mostly specific to eastern Ma, beut the extended 
    was for all of southern NE. I think I can get a Worm town broadcast 
    on another channel, I'll try that tonight.

    Gee this file is quiet these days, is everybody at shows?

    I heard we're in for a gorgeous weekend!!  In the upper 50's Friday and
    Saturday. I may blow off half of friday and do somethng outside.  Still
    too wet with the melting snow to go bike riding.
    
    I'll pobably end up working on the damn cars.  They need it and I like
    to get really dirty once in a while fixing the car.  I got such a
    "clean" job that getting really greasy and grimy is a pleasure!

    	The Worcester station really doesn't say much 'cause they're not
    broadcasting to mariners. They did deliver the little tidbit that this 
    season's snow fall in wonderful Wormtown was a wicked 117.* inches!!
    I think that's a little better (from my point of view) than last year.
    Just a little.
    
    	They did say, and Boston agrees that Tomorrow (Friday) starts
    cloudy and then clears, going up to the 50s. Saturday is the first time 
    I've heard 60s in the forcast this year!! But they are both talking
    a good chance of light rain for Sunday and Monday so don't leave the
    fould weather gear behind. Saturday sounds like a great day, But Sun
    and Mon could be wet.

    	This should be some spectacular Maple sugaring weather in central
    Massachusetts over the next few days. 
    
    	Maybe if I own some maple trees next year I'll do this again.

	This weather is fabulous....my aunt & uncle have 
	a sugarhouse in the Berk's, I should call em 
	and see if theres some extra maple candy lying
	around!!!  They still have 4' of snow around
	the house.....

I went walking in the little-know Sarah-Doublet forest in littleton this past
weekend.  Lots and lots of run-off.  Many areas still are covered with >1' of
snow.

I'd reckon that snow in the mtns will stay well into May - those conifers do
a very good job of keeping the snow from melting.

	Where's the Sarah Doublet forest?

The water is running about 16 inches over the Quinnopoxett Dam near my
house; normally, the water only flows over about one quarter of the breadth
of the dam. There is an old mill race on the north side, you should see
what it looks like now; there is a five foot high standing wave at the
outlet. As of yesterday, there was still a snow/ice bridge across the four
foot wide race. 

I haven't checked it out yet, but is water running over the Wachusett Dam 
spillway? I would guess so, since I've never seen the water level higher.

Jamie and other bikers: The loop around Quinnopoxett would make a great
ride: probably around six or eight miles, it loops through the red pine
plantation, following the river up and then cuts under the I190 bridge.
Then a side road cuts right across the river and you wind through open
woods up until you come to Quinnopoxett village, then its a nice 3 or four
mile stretch of good open road back over 190 and down Laurel street back to
Oakdale center. 

There is some really neat local history on this road that follows the
Quinnopoxett up from the resevior, I forgot the road's name, though. The
area where the dam is used to be Harrisville, a mill town built in the
early 1800s and destroyed by the construction of the resevior around 1900.
You can still see foundations, roadbeds, and other ghost-town denizens if
you look around enough. A bit further up the river, the chasm where I190
crosses marks the spot where, in the 1700's an earthquake which killed
hundreds and was estimated to be 7.5-er was epicentered. Today, all that
stands is the hydro plant at the dam, which generates electricity from the
quabbin Aquaduct, and is that big pipe's terminus.

    maple syrup/sugar products were having a tough time of it this year...
    evidently the longer winter and colder weather has kept the sap from
    running and the later the spring starts, the shorter the tapping

	Oooooohhh, geez, I used to go there during High School
	to deviate!  The sign must be new....

    
           On March 12-15, a storm now called "The Storm of the Century"
       struck the eastern seaboard.  Following are some highlights of
       the information gathered about the storm thus far:
   
       1)  At least 243 deaths have been attributed to the storm to date,
       plus 48 missing at sea.  This is over 3 times the combined death toll
       of 79 attributed to hurricanes Hugo and Andrew.
   
       2)  Thousands of people were isolated by record snowfalls, especially
       in the Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia mountains.  Over 100
       hikers were rescued from the North Carolina and Tennessee mountains.
       Curfews were enforced in many counties and cities as 'states of
       emergency' were declared.  The National Guard was employed in many
       areas, especially in the North Carolina mountains.
   
       3)  For the first time, every major airport on the east coast was
       closed at one time or another by the storm.
   
       4)  Hundreds of roof collapses were reported due to the weight of the
       heavy wet snow.  Over 3 million customers were without electrical
       power at one time due to fallen trees and high winds.
   
       5)  At least 18 homes fell into the sea on Long Island due to the
       pounding surf.  About 200 homes along North Carolina's Outer
       Banks were damaged and may be uninhabitable.
   
       6)  Florida was struck by at least 27 tornadoes (at least 15
       counties were struck), although the exact number is not known as
       of yet.  26 deaths in Florida were attributed either to the
       tornadoes or other severe weather.  A 9-foot storm surge was
       reported in the Apalachicola area.  Preliminary damage estimates
       are as high as $1 billion.  Also, up to 6 inches of snow fell in
       the Florida panhandle.
   
       7)  3 storm-related deaths were reported in Quebec and 1 in
       Ontario.  3 deaths occurred in Cuba (Havana was blacked out), and
       a tornado left 5000 people homeless in Reynosa, Mexico (near
       Texas border).
   
       8)  Highest recorded wind gusts included:
   
           110 MPH in Franklin County, FL
           110 MPH on Mount Washington, NH
           101 MPH on Flattop Mountain, NC (by NCDC employee Grant
       Goodge--due to ice accumulation on anemometer, he estimated 105-
       107 MPH)
           98 MPH in South Timbalier, LA
           92 MPH on South Marsh Island, LA
           90 MPH in Myrtle Beach, SC
           89 MPH in Fire Island, NY
   
           83 MPH in Vero Beach, FL
           81 MPH in Boston, MA
           71 MPH at La Guardia Arpt, NY
   
       9)  Snowfall totals included:
   
           50 inches on Mount Mitchell, NC (14-foot drifts)
           44 inches in Snowshoe, WV
           43 inches in Syracuse, NY
           35 inches in Portland, ME
           35 inches in Lincoln, NH

       12)  A spokesman for the National Weather Service's special
       studies branch said that the volume of water that fell as snow
       may be unprecedented.  For example, the NWS office at the
       Asheville, NC airport reported a snow/water ratio of 4.2 to 1
       from core samples of new snow.  Numerous other core samples taken
       in a nearby area by an NCDC employee verified this 'very wet
       snow' with similar results.  This equated to 4-5 inches of liquid
       equivalent precipitation (or even higher in some areas) from the
       storm.  Areas north of Asheville which reported up to 4 feet of
       snow probably received 'dryer' snow with similar liquid
       equivalent amounts.  Due to the weight of the heavy snow, damage
       to trees and some buildings was extensive.  Polk County, NC
       reported 99% of its electrical customers without power at one
       point during the storm.
   
       13)  Overall damage figures are not yet available, but it appears
       that the total will exceed $1 billion.
   
       14)  Comparisons to the Blizzard of 1888 are now being made.  A
       few facts from the '88 storm:
   
            400 people killed
            50 inches of snow in Saratoga Springs, NY
            48 inches of snow in Albany, NY
            22 inches of snow in New York City
            Snow drifts over the tops of houses from New York to New
       England
            80 MPH wind gusts common
   
            Although the '88 storm was probably more severe in the
       Northeast and New England, it did not affect the entire eastern
       seaboard to the extent that the 1993 storm affected the area.
   
       OBSERVATIONAL DATA
   
           The attached data lists were taken from decoded surface
       observations for the period March 12-15, 1993.  The two most
       damaging characteristics of the storm were the heavy, wet snow
       and the high winds (including tornadoes).  The first list focuses
       on some of the stations which reported the water equivalent of
       snow on the ground.  The second list shows all reports of wind
       speed or wind gust of at least 70 MPH.
   
           A complete file (in the same format as the attached) of all
       observations (56090 observations--4.4 megabytes) during this
       period from latitude 20 N to 50 N and longitude 65 W to 95 W is
       available as shown below.  Also, additional data (other elements
       such as wave heights) from these observations are available from
       NCDC upon request.

    I once had a farm in the upper peninsula pf Michigan.  We had lots of 
    maple trees and made syrup each spring.  The sap run when the temp
    is above freezing during the day, and below freezing at night. 
    Sunshine and wind increase the volume of the flow.  It take approx.
    40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup.  Gathering and boiling sap 
    is absolutely the most fantastic outdoor thing in the world.
    
    I lost my farm and joined DEC 13 years ago, "I'd trade all my tomorrows
    for just one yesterday...."  I can almost smell the sap boiling now...

    I got a bit of a sunburn too yesterday.  I ended up going to horseneck
    beach with some friends, and now I'm paying for too low of an SPF.  I
    can also tell you that it takes quite a bit of determination to go
    swimming there this time of year.  If you take too long to get in the
    water your feet go numb. I did manage to get all the way in the water
    though after the 2nd attempt.

I've been hearing lately that anything less than SPF 15 isn't good enough.
Don't know if this is rooted in the ozone-hole information or the skin-cancer
stuff, or both.  Any exposure that causes a change in skin color has, by
definition, caused damage.  This, along with meeting a few people who spent 
way too much time getting tanned, and now look like a well-tanned cowhide,
has led me to loose my attraction for the suntanned look altogether.  Give me
a nice, pale complexion anytime...

Being basically 100% Irish, the sun and I just don't get along anyway.  Luckily,
most of my favorite activities are indoors.  

Or at least, under cover...;-)

Yep, I agree with you.  I wasn't going for a George Hamilton look ... just
was surprised that I got burned this time of year with SPF 8 on.  This weekend

	Yes, the sun is doing it's damage this year...people in 
	certain parts of Austrialia are feeling the immediate 
	direct effects of no-ozone living...they've had to change
	their lifestyles significantly.  We are now going to face
	what they've been dealing with for years.   

	I am eager to find out what last weeks shuttle mission
	discovered!

My doctor told me that anything over SPF 15 was just as effective as SPF 
15, and that stuff labeled as over SPF 15 was just a marketing gimmick.

She said labeling it SPF 45 is another way of saying its "300% effective."

    I saw a program on TV a while back on Autralia and the skin cancer

    The priliminary stuff from the shuttle was that the ozone is very
    depleted over the nothern hemisphire, especially the east coast.  I
    have not seen this in print yet, so no hard data.
    
    Yup.... I think we are really going to miss the old ozone layer.

    Yeah, we used to spend nearly the entire summer vacation on the beach,
    like most of the rest of Australia. A dab of zinc cream on your nose
    and off you go. Sun cream was for sissies.
    
    I used to return to school each with the classic sun-bronzed Anzac
    look, hair completely bleached out by sun and salt water.
    
    No wonder we lead the world in skin cancer (two of my relatives have
    had malignant skin cancers treated).
    
    We also lead the world in repetitive strain injuries, but that's not

yup... misunderstood....  1pm the parking lot fun begins.  alright!

    well it's 3pm here in Colo and we are gettin our usual afternoon
    thunderboomer. three of the baby magpies out the cx03 cafe window 
    are huggin the tree trunk, the other 3 are in the nest...not enough
    room for all 6 now. The ones on the tree have their heads tilted way
    back so water stays out of their beak holes and they don't drown...funny.

Supposed to hit 90 big ones today here, w/ humidity!

    Well the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers here in Minneapolis/St. Paul
    have brought the southern half of the Metro area to a stand still. 
    Only 2 of the 5 Minnesota river crossings are open and one might close
    today if we get the 1-2 inches more of rain predicted!!!  I35 is the 
    crossing that might close and is a major artery into the cities.  The 
    rivers have not even crested yet so it will get worse before it gets 
    better.  Alot of people living near the river are having some major 
    problems.  They are saying when the rivers crest they will be close 
    to 15 feet above flood stage!!!!!  
    
    Besides the extensive damage to many residense. They have canceled the 
    Lalapaluza (sp?) Concert and moved the Barney FunFest concert.  Both of
    these shows were supose to be on an island on the Mississippi that is
    underwater right now.  Valleyfair Amusment park has one of the water
    rides under water and one of the rollercosters is half underwater.  
    Holman field airport in St. Paul is also under water.
    
    This is the worst flooding in 30 years.

    One other amazing story was about two Mountain bikers who were riding
    down by the river and allofasudden the river sweep over the bike trail
    and forces the bikers into the very turbulent waters.  One was able to
    get to dry land easily but the other was caught down streem.  During
    the rescue effort an officer was caught under the asphalt trail (he had
    a rope tied around him)  The river current was so strong that is washed
    away the asphalt!!!!!

This is one hot JUNE so far...  if this is any indication of what is in store
for the rest of the summer, July and August will push 100+

back to the roasting hot summers.  we need another volcano to go off I
guess......

Thunderstorms are fun (one of the things I miss about
Tampa)...  Tampa gets 90 days per year with at least one
storm.

    Ps.  Colorado gets nailed by thunderstorms all late spring/early
    summers.   I love it.  Nothing like sitting back and watch ol' mother

Great article on Lightening in the last National Geographic.  It shows the 
highest concetration of stikes per square mile is in Central Florida.

    I actually like being in work on hot humid days like these.  It's quite
    brisk here in MRO1.  
    
    The parking lots here are quite empty; guess everyone is on vacation. 
    I feel sorry for them!  Too hot to do much; even too hot to go to the

    I was blown away with a blast of heat when I walked out of this same 
    building yesterday and I hear it's hotter today! 
    
    My mind is still on Monday though, the first day it was warm enough to 
    sail all day without a shirt. My chest and stomach are the most amusing
    color of red, but oh it's uncomfotable when my shirt touches it.

My god ... he's been cut off ....

    	I got home to Boylston and the thunder started at about 4:30. Non 
    stop claps of thunder with no space greater than 15 seconds for a good
    hour and a half. The lightening that struck over at the corner nearly 
    blew me out of my chair. We last power three times until it stayed out 
    from 6:30 to about 7:40.
    
    	And the whole time Worcester NOAA was saying no warnings or watches
    had been issued, truly clueless weather station.

The rain didn't help much.  It just hit the ground, evaporated, and 
turned into 99% humidity on a 99 degree day.  Yuck.  I keep sticking 
to everything I touch.  Makes ya wanna just walk around nekkid all 
day (for some of us, more than usual)...;-)

For the Boston Area, 13 days over 90F in one year is the average.  So far, we
have had 8 days over 90 and it is only 8-Jul.  Today will make 9...

last year, I think there were only 3 over 90.

1991 had 27 days over 90.

the rain actually cooled the littleton area off, but, as tim noted, the
humidity got a bit worse.

I thought that on average, its been cool this summer.

    I had to run out and close the windows in the car about 16:30
    yesterday.  When I got to the car, I hopped in and just kept heading

    I beat the storm home.  We went shopping last night.  When we got out
    we got nailed with a killer storm!!  The lights went out for a minute
    at Shaws when this massive bolt of lighting hit something about a mile
    in back of Shaws.  Musta been a power station or something.
    
    I haven't seen lightning like we had last night for quite a while. 
    Lightning like you see on the Weather Channel when they show stuff
    happening in the mid west!!  That's something for little RI!  Lotsa
    rain too.  Then massive humidity and high temps for night.

    the storm last night was wild, when we got to Julie's comp. the storm
    hit, blew out the lights twice during warm ups to Julie's event...place
    went pitch-dark (what does that mean anyway) luck-a-lee the kids were
    off the floor at the times this happened,then the rains were rilly
    heavy, so much the roof started to leak !...this was in Tauton Ma.

We got hit pretty hard last night.  Knocked out power until early this
morning.  My wife was talking to her Dad who had called other than his
usual Friday time to tell her they were going away for a vacation.
Amy told him, "Fine but it's thundering and lightning like crazy so I 
better get off before I get electrocuted..."
The next thing she knew the phone was on the floor, her teeth, jaw, cheek
all hurt and she got a wicked headache.  But otherwise she was ok.

Sigh...  Anybody know if they still sell lightning rods?? And how 
effective they are?

    We have been getting these heavy intense storms in the Upper
    Mississippi Valley just about everyday for about a month Literally.  
    We had tornado warnings yesterday heavy rains this AM and it is looking
    like some HEAVY storms are moving in.  DeMoines Iowa was getting like 
    another 3 inches of rain today.  Really to bad for the farmers - many
    have lost their first crop and then replanted and have now lost their
    crops for the second time in one summer.

Check the homework notesfile for more info (KP7). I think Radio shack may 
sell them, too.

    I mostly watch them via satellite TV. A lot more images get distributed
    each day than those you see on the news.
    
    AM Weather is pretty good for that sort of stuff although it is
    broadcast at some horrible hour (i.e. sometime before 9am). When NASA
    announced some new findings on ozone depletion last year they beamed
    down some very interesting, and scary, animated sequences from one of
    NCAR's global circulation models (ok, so I'm a weather weenie).

sucking up some of the idle Alpha mips floating around our LAN. :-)  I know 
there's likely somebody out there tconverting the satellite gifs into the

images and weather maps via anonymous ftp to vmd.cso.uiuc.edu, which has IR 
and Visual satellite maps and the full suite of aviation weather maps.

The year I lived up at Killington(1982?) we were up looking for jobs and places
to live the last weekend of august and Killington peak got 12" of snow.  
Lots of people, including us hiking up to the top to get a run in before it 
melted at 2:00pm...

    I love winter and all, I can't wait for the first snow (it makes me so
    happy), but in all honesty I am far from ready for the first snow. I've
    still got a good 5 or so weeks of sailing left and then I need time to 
    put the boat away. Speaking of which (wrong note) Did you know that the 
    Whitbread starts 3 weeks from tomorrow! Exciting news!
    
    Well, I hope I get a new shroud today. And speaking of the weather,
    it's supposed to blow some serious heavy winds tonight, I'm hoping
    for milder air over the later days of the weekend.

	snowed 2" at 2000'.  I could see Killington from my window and 
	it was whitecapped.

	I skiied The Glades triple chair and Snowdon Mtn on my birthday

    Went up to Denver for the 1st snowed out game off the year for the
    Rockies.  Didn't bother us too much though.  We had a great snowball 
    fight outside the sports bar.  It was great to be sloshing around in 
    the snow again.  
    
    Only downside of this snow is I have a few inches in my garden.  I
    still have loads of green tomatoes on the vines, my cabbage wasn't
    quite ready yet.  Lucky this quick a cool down won't hurt the carrots
    or beets.

Actually, there will be a lot of teams in snow weather mindset starting 
next year when they go to three divisions in each league.  This will bring 
in wildcard teams and a third set of playoffs extending the season into 
November.

    Serious wind yesterday! Super crisp, clear air. Full foul weather gear
    too. A wet day, blowing about 20 knots put the lee rail far enough
    under water to submerge my ankle under green water. Nearly overpowered
    with the spinnaker up, it all depende on how I trimmed it. 
    
    Fun weather for racing!!
    
    Break out the hiking boots soon.

    I've heard a lot of talk about snow in the last twelve hours or so. 
    I'm certainly hoping we get it since I'd really like to take out my 
    touring board and get a real kick out of that wax I got for Christmas!
    
    I'll use the Alipne boards too, if I can, but I've got new woods in my
    back yard and I really want to ski them!

OK.... how much?  is up North supposed to get a good helping?  I may
hit the road northbound tomorrow...

    There is being included the normal diclaimer of storm speed governing
    how much we get. Comercial radio has been saying 3-6 inches in the
    Boston area. NOAA weather radio says there is potential for 6 inches or
    more. Two weather systems are merging, one moving up the east cost and
    another moving in from the cold mid west. The current conditions
    included snow in Washington DC at the time. I think the northward track 
    of the coastal storm indicates potential for this to move up north and
    add some skiing terrain. 
    	The word is, clouding up today, snow starting to fall in the
    afternoon (50% chance), continueing through the night (I think that
    was a 70% chance) and then tapering off Thursday morning. I think it
    will at least be enough to shovel. 
    
    
    	My biggest problem with the idea of skiing this week is that it is 
    vacation week. Full price, full capacity and no discounts all week
    long.  

    603-225-3161 will get you the NH forecasts.  Here's Boston's, no
    amounts predicted yet.  My bet: 3-4".

    they keep talking about snow here too, but right now it doesn't look
    like it.  Nice blue, sunny skies.  I know DC got dumped on already and
    it's supposed to be on it's way up.  
    
    

Yeah, it's supposed to start out nice and still be fairly reasonable
for the commute home, then turn real after midnight.  We'll see.
Maybe I'll read Hannah "Geraldine's Big Snow" tonight, as it is the
story of a little girl (alright, in the book she is really a little pig,
but cute animals are used a lot in these things) waiting on a 
big snow storm.  
Anybody have any recommendations for good boots and bindings for cross-country
skies?  My old ones are starting to fall apart, and they always hurt
my feet (right at the toe/foot interface) but the skies themselves are 
fine.  The bindings are step into kind, but not Solomon (which I'm thinking
of getting).

    	The word on Solomon bindings is, bad choice of equi[ment. 
    
    	The bindings you desribe, I think are NNN, (New Nordic Norm).
    There is a new development in the NNN style called NNN BC (Back
    Country). This has a metal bar under the ball of your foot to help
    flex the boot where your feet would normaly flex. I really have no
    experience with these step in style of bindings, so I can't give you
    first hand info, but anyone I've talked to who has experience with 
    SNN (That's the Solomon ones) has nothing good to say about them. 
    
    	Myself, I ski with your basic 75mm 3-pin. I have a Merell "XCD
    lace" boot which is a backcountry boot. It's a good boot, but if I want
    to ski and not get blisters on my toes I have to pad them to avoid
    that. If I don't pad two particular toes, blisters will form and break
    in nothing flat. I use my boots for both telemark skiing and touring. 
    My touring binding is a basic three pin with pins, but my tele binding 
    is a Riva cable. The cable binding has no pins but instead holds the
    toe of the boot in a slot with forward pressure from the cable. This
    slot style binding has a lot of binding body on either side of the toe
    to offer better lateral support (I've heard that lots of turning force
    on the pins can rip the pin holes out of your boot). But, I understand
    that three pin boots are becoming harder and harder to find because of 
    production of NNN taking over. 
    	So, NNN is the emerging style which most equipment will be based
    around. I stillski a three pin and have no reason to change until I
    can't get the equipment any more. 
    
    I guess that makes me a pin head and discussung skiing in the weather
    note supports that theory.

Loon Mountain got 5"-7" out of it;  I know 'cuz I was there skiing.  Full
price, no discounts offered...  plus, i had gads of equip. problems.  but,
other then that, the skiing was excellent for December!

	I don't think they really know what's going to happen after 
	daybreak tomorrow, we could easily have a foot by dawn.

	I didn't do any downhill over vaca. due to ski area overcrowding,	
	but I did rent a pair of cross country skis and buzzed around
	the local area.  Yesterday the snow was melting right out from 
	under the skis.

    The forecast at lunch spoke of a foot or more in the western and
    interior sections. The coast will be getting rain tomorrow morning
    so Boston will not get as much as the interior this time. There
    is potential for major icing in central regions of the stat tomorrow
    morning after much of the snow has fallen. It sounds like this storm
    will be better for the mountains than the last one.
    
    XC last Thursday, pretty good, rock were obscured from view, but not 
    enough to protect skis.
    
    	Alpine yesterday at Cannon, Full price, neglegable loft lines,
    almost all trails open. pretty good cover (but not good enough for new
    skis, Very, very nice snow on zoomer in the afternoon with mild ripples
    starting to look like bumps.

    gettin a little snow out on the east coast? saw Marlbourgh Mass on Good

    on a realted issue, we have a ritzy club out here called the AdaMan Club
    (they "add a man" or new member each year)
    that walks up Pikes Peak every NYE to set off fireworks. Started off
    nice and balmy at the base in Manitou Springs, but by the time they
    reached near summit, they were on the ground crawling in 60-100 MPH
    windgusts and 60 below wind chill...the wind let up enough for them to
    shoot the fireworks at midnight. (I didn't see them, too busy kissing
    my wife and dancin to Shakedown Street!)

    Yeah, a little bit of a storm happening out here!  We got about
    8 or so inches in Lancaster where I live (about 15 miles No or
    Marlboro).  Now it's sleeting like crazy making for a pretty 
    slick drive/walk.  Actually I think the walking is much more
    trecherous than the driving.  Supposed to keep up all day and
    into tonight...
    
    This place is almost as deserted as it was last week!

    	I agree with MJ about the ocupancey thing, but this time there's
    less activity in the Grateful too. 
    	We got about 6"-8" in Boylston (~10 mi due west of M-boro). It's
    been steady sleet since about 4:am there. It's still coming down which
    makes me really happy, but there is a chance of a change to rain. It
    will continue all day and if it goes rain today it will turn back to
    snow tonight. I'm not sure how long I'll stay in here, I might have to
    go out and go skiing again. 
    
    	I was thinking of you this AM rfb. I was wondering if you've gotten 
    to get out and ski yet. Last week wasn't great but it was skiing (this
    is the XC type I'm talking about), but this afternoon I'll bet my woods

    Last year I think it was around $19 so it's probably 20-$22 this year.

    Our snow in D.C. was a flop, right now it is snowing hard, but not
    sticking, the sky is dark grey, and we can expect an additional
    inch maybe, so we got a total of 1.5 inches.   No big deal down here,
    we keep hearing that the trains going north to Philadelphia, Newark,
    New York are all screwed up, due to power lines falling.

    	Lucking out depends on your point of view! I can't wait to go ski
    this stuff and I'm trying to think of a deserted slope somewhere where 
    I can go cut some telemark turns. 
    
    	I just went home for lunch and it is gorgeous out! The driving
    isn't too bad, but in N-boro they've used a lot of salt and the plows
    have sprayed an unattractive brown trim along the edge of the road, But 
    there is the better part of a foot of very dense snow cover all over
    the ground. I couldn't stand driving back here, but it was too easy and
    I really didn't have a good excuse. I can't wait for after work, I'm
    either going to find a hill and play on my telemark boards or grab the
    touring cut and go ski some trails in the woods. There could still be
    some rocks in the woods so the turning skis I want to find something
    lawn like to ski on, but at a very steep angle {:*).
    
    	But if DC is still getting snow, then I'm really hopeful that
    thewr's more to come!!!

    There are a couple trails on the backside of Wachusett that, with 
    over a foot of snow, would be awesome.  One of em is the Old Indian
    foot trail facing to the west, very steep, a little ledgy, I skied 
    it on downhill skis last year.  The other is the one that drops
    off to the Northeast and ends up at the state Park Headquarters, 
    forgot the name.  Ultimately, you could ski up on the access road 
    right to where it crosses.
    
    
    

    	I kind of want to stay away from Wachusett. It's not really that
    close and by the time I got there today it would be dark. If I'm going
    to ski in the dark I'd rather know the terrain, but the back of
    wachusett could be worth checking out.  
    
    	I would really like to carve through some of this stuff while it's 
    fresh so if I go tonight, I'd like something where there is nothing to
    hit. But if I can't come up with any thing by the time I head out, I
    can tour through some of the Pisgah trails in the dark. There are some
    pretty challenging turns in there and it could be fun. But I think to
    carve this blanket with a treal turning ski would be a delicious
    opportunity, rarely availible in these parts.

    Well, I don't know if it's snowing outside yet, but it's snowing on my
    workstation, courtesy of xsnow.  Cute program.  It doesn't get
    all that high, but it will accumulate on top of a window if you
    have one with the top exposed.  I didn't notice it for a while at
    first, since my windows usually take up all available space and

    	Well, it's snowing and and accumulating more, again. This is the
    most amazing January weather I can recall. Eve in the Blizzard of '78
    it waited till February. 
    	I cleared another 3"-4" off my deck and Driveway again this morning
    and by the time I was done, the deck was covered again. The driving is
    a little bit slick and the snow that was left from the storm earlier in 
    the week is really slippery with this light stuff on top. THis is the
    lightest, fluffiest snow weve had so far, but tonight and tomorrow
    should be a lot denser. 
    	Yup, I turned on the weather radio last night to get an idea of how 
    I wanted to wax my skis (Alpine) for the weekend and heard nothing but 
    snow advisories through the entire forecast. I did gleen enough
    information to determine that I wanted a mix of red and purple wax
    for the Alpines and a dose of white mixer for the fast skis. On my
    Nordic it looks like the green from the other night is still good. 
    But the weather people said that we would get 4-8 inches last night,
    another couple durring the day today and then another storm would move
    in this afternoon. Last night's forecast called for the potential of a
    foot or more within the Friday night to Saturday night time span. 
    The storm would come in with snow this afternoon, dump big time over
    night, dissipate some tomorrow, maybe warm up turning to sleet and
    freezing rain (More likely toward the south-east) Then turn back into
    snow for Saturday night. 
    	Approximately 18" of snow was discussed over the 48 hours between 
    THursday night and Saturday night. This, on top of the better part of a
    foot from earlier this week, is unheard of in this area, in January, in
    my recollection. I don't care what I recall as a kid who couldn't see
    the tops of the snow banks in '66 or '67, this is some of the biggest 
    chain of snow storms I remember seeing in January. March has delivered 
    some big snow recently. 
    
    	A truely amazing chain of storms!!!

Phyllis, I got this from one of the OSF systems here in ZK3.  There might
be a decwindows example, but I'm not sure.  I did find what appears to be
the source it's built from, and I'm putting that in 

quarry::/usr/staff/quarry2/petert/public/xsnow-1.18.tar.Z

which you need to uncompress and tar xvf xsnow.....

I'm assuming you're on a VMS system, though I could be wrong.  I see up
here that there are compress and tar available on the VMS system I go
through for notes, so I'm hoping you'd have access to these too.  Of 
course, if you have an Ultrix or OSF/1 system, then you'd be all set.

By the way, you wouldn't happen to have a left over copy of Tuesday's
New York Times would you?  I missed my weekly fix of the Science Times
due to the snow.

    woke to -12 this AM - I think it is still below 0 now.  At least we
    have some snow on the ground to play with now ('bout 8 inches two
    nights ago).  There was 20+ inches up on the North shore of Lake 
    Supperior (out on Highway 61) that fell that same day.

last night, i went for a walk after the slashmon left around 10:50 or so.

     I came in to work today (Saturday).....I can't believe they didn't
    call it off, at 7:00 am there was only three of us out of about fifty
    here in manufacturing, even now there are only about ten people.

    well I don't know what you ended up with up there, but what we got down
    here was the longest, worst ice storm in memory.  Cars frozen solid
    with INCHES of ice all over them.  People smacking windshields with
    metal objects and hammers trying to break through the ice.  Car locks
    so frozen that even if you could make your way to the door, you
    couldn't get in to get anything heated up from the inside.  
    
    I know I was pretty psyched I was the one who made the dinner Saturday
    night and only had to sit around in my nice warm apartment and hear the
    horror stories of the travelers. :-)
    
    

    	I'm happy to report that we got snow and no ice and I like it that
    way. Central Ma. got about 12-13 inches over night Friday night and 
    Southern NH got about 3-4 more than that. Shoveling my driveway it
    seemed like there was a phase of denser, maybe sleety, snow in the
    middle, but no ice. 
    	The skiing was amazing and the tips of my XC skis were getting
    completely consumed in the snow as I skied along. 
    	Sunday was cold and windy. We skied at Bromley (which I won't go
    out of my way to do again) and it was between 6 and 10 degrees F
    durring the day, windspeed stayed around high teens to 20mph most of
    the day. Lifts were closed, lines were long, temperature was low,
    skiing was fun. There were some small spaces of glade skiing which  was
    a lot of fun on telemark skis but it was the un official glade skiing
    that got this place to the weather note. When we skied in to the High 
    section of the glades, the unpaced snow drifts completely stopped my
    skis so I would nose dive into snow where I couldn't reach te bottom.
    In trying to get up, with my ski poles at 120cm and stopping on a
    surface, the hand grip was covered by snow! The snow was as deep there 
    as the temperature was cold.

cross country skis

i doubt that i'll ever get really serioualy into it, but it would be nice to do
as an alternative when there's too much snow to go mountain biking, and just as
a great way to get out in the woods and stay in shape

any general advice as to how much i should expect to spend (for something
decent, but not incredible), what length skis would be appropriate (my downhill
skis are 195 cm), or even what different kind of skis are available and what
i should consider?  (i'd probably mostly do terrain that's relatively flat, but
i must admit that true backcountry stuff sounds like a lot of fun)

The big decision is whether to get metal edged skis or not.  
If you view xc skiing as a way to go hiking in the mountains in the winter
(like I do), you probably want metal edged skis (if not snowshoes!)
as they are more versatile for handling back-cuntry conditions.
They are (usually) wider and have more "side-cut" (hour glass shape) so they
give more flotation in deep snow and can "carve" turns better.
The metal edges allow the edges to "bite" into even crusty snow, greatly
facilitating turning.  Look at Fischer Europa 99s or Karhu XCD GTs or similar.
Get "NNN-BC" bindings and leather boots that look like (fairly heavy) leather
hiking boots to match.

But the price (other than $$) that you pay is that metal edge skis are quite
a lot heavier.  Not only that, but you would tend to use heavier boots 
(typically ones that resemble leather hiking boots) with them.

If you plan to do most of your touring on groomed trails or even ungroomed
but heavily skiied trails, then you probably don't want metal-edged skis.
This is more for the person who sees skiing as a way to get an aerobic
work-out in the winter.  Get light, skinny skis and boots that look more like
(insulated) running shoes.  Go to Windblown, Waterville Valley, Bretton Woods,
etc. and have a great time with everyone else.

There is a "new breed" of xc skis out this year.  Much shorter than traditional
and "one size fits all".  Around 150 cm, I think, and supposedly easier for
beginners to get used to.  These, of course are *not* for back-country use.
I haven't tried them.  Traditional xc skis range
in length from around 190 cm up to 215 or even 220 cm.  Choice is tradionally
determined by your height, but weight is actually more relevent.  I am 6-1"
and use 215 cm skis (big).  The traditional "quick and dirty" method of 
determining length is that they should reach from the floor to your wrist
when you are standing and your arm is raised vertically.  A better test
(based on weight) is to put a slip of paper under the middle of each ski
on a *flat* hard surface.  Then stand on the skis (in the normal way).
With your weight distributed evenly between the two skis, you should be able
to pull the papers out (i.e. the middle of the ski should *not* be flattened
to the floor by 1/2 your weight).  But standing on just *one* ski, you should
*not* be able to pull the paper out (i.e. the middle of the ski *should*
be flattened to the floor by 100% of your weight).

Another decision is whether to get waxable or waxless skis.  I *strongly*
recommend waxless (let the attacks begin !!).  They sacrfice a bit of
performance (under ideal conditions *and* if you have used the right wax)
but are a *lot* less trouble.  Buy waxable skis if you enjoy waxing your
skis, but waxless if you prefer spending your time skiing on them (;-))!

What I have said pertains primarily to "traditional" xc technique.  There
is another style called "skating".  This is similar to ice skating but on
skis.  You use shorter skis and longer poles than in the tradtional technique.
This technique is harder to learn and probably requires a higher level of
aerobic fitness but it is faster.  It also requires trails that
are specially groomed for skating (not just two ruts like for traditional
technique).  But these are available at most (all?) xc ski places.
For this technique, you need (or at least it is preferable) to use waxable
type skis but that have no "kick" (gripping) wax applied to the middle 
section.

biking; not groomed for cross-counrty, but probably somewhat heavily used by
other skiers; back-country stuff in the mountains sounds like fun, and maybe
i'll get into that sometime, but i think for now i'll be sticking to flatter
terrain; so i'll probably get waxless skis w/out edges

    	I agree with Craig right down the line, but I feel the price of a
    steel edge (weight price) is negledgible. My self I have a double
    camber, little side cut, waxable ski and a single camber, blow my mind
    right out of my head, turnable telemark ski. Looking at where I bike
    and how badly I want to hit those trails on my touring cut skis made me
    think of this note yesterday. I think you would have a great time and
    be hooked on a sport that doesn't require lift tickets on a pair of
    double camber, steel edged, waxless ski. I'm a pin head and like my 3
    pin boot, but three pins are going to be less prominent as the industry
    shifts and you probably do want to get into something NNN-BC. 
    	I suggest waxless for ease of use. It took me years of frustrating
    skiing to figure out HOW to properly apply wax to my touring skis. It
    took me one trip without any kick (grip) to speak of to realize the
    pain of waxing, again, to match the new temperature, paid off big time 
    when you wanted to go vs. slide in one place. I have yet to figure out
    how to properly wax my single camber ski for touring, but Oh you should
    see what these things do on the down side of the hill!!!
    	I've said single camber and double camber and you might be
    wondering what I'm talking about. A single camber ski is like your
    alpine (downhill) equipment. Single camber has one steady arc of flex
    to the ski. A double camber has a moderate flex pattern at the tip and
    tail and the a much stiffer flex pattern under the boot, this second 
    camber is the wax pocket or kick zone. This is the type of camber that
    Craig described the proper (paper) test for. FOur good touring you want
    a double camber ski. Waxless skis have fish scale type patterns in this
    kick zone to give you "kick". If the ski were waxable, the kick zone is
    where you apply your XC wax. 
    	I bought my touring cut skis for learning telemark skiing. It was
    okay. No It was hell, these things are toooo long for me and toooo
    stiff. I was frustrated, but dammit I was going to learn this. Five
    years into it I wanted a ski that could go, I was going to get a
    waxless and instead got talked into a single camber ski with sidecut. 
    I can't tour well on these things, but they have a notch for my
    climbing skins built in at the factory. I am still blown away at the
    easy with which these skis turn. The single camber ski is for someone
    who wants to attempt radical steep descents. 
    	I would strongly recommend a touring cut ski with a heavy boot for
    skiing where you bike. I'm not bent on metal edges, but all my skis
    have them (maybe I am). Backcountry and metal edges equal abuse of the
    steel. I saw a pair of skis last night with a partial steel edge. I'm 
    not sure what that buys you. 
    
    	Robyn and I are talking about some XC this weekend. Maybe a long,
    moderate terrain, 10 mi. one way trip. Or maybe something local one day
    which I'm thinking about a place I like to bike which I've always
    wanted to telemark. I know where you could rent skis, maybe join us and
    give this all a try.
    
    	And the weather forecast calls for some light snow before the
    weekend!! Fresh dust over an amazing base (how sweet the sound).

i think that someday i probably will own a pair of back-country skis; but, for
the time being, i think the terrain that i'll ski and the amount of money that
i wanted to spend was more geared to a touring ski without an edge

apparently i wasn't the only person who took a look at all of this snow and
decided to get skis; there's not much of a selection left, and i was pretty
limited by what was available in my size

i got a whole package for $150 at the ski shop in framingham; selected them
on monday, picked them up last night after work, and tried 'em out last night
in callahan state park (behind our house in framingham); it was a lot of fun,
and i'll probably go back tonite; anyone care to join me?

looks like all snow here in littleton.
i'm TOTALLY psyched.

now, i heard there is another storm for thursday night.
what's the deal?

	Last nights strorm was wimpy....a measly 2-3 inches, hell, 5 years
	ago that would've been considered a dump here in the Northeast!

    Yes, and the snow removal people would have gotten SO psyched, they'd
    blow the budget on it.
    
    	But, there was a lot more snow in NH as we were driving home from 
    skiing. And you should also know that the lift line were short, the
    fall lines were long, the skis turn very rapidly and the snow covered 
    the surface very nicely.
    

	Major cold spell moving into New England with temps (without 
	windchill) in the negative digits.

	I estimate a lot of ski areas will be stutting down any exposed
	lifts....this is gonna be some serious shit!

    50 degrees in Colo Spgs for the next 4 days, 20's at nite. We watered
    out lawn and trees yesterday. Hopeing for some spring-type skiing this
    Sunday.

    we're supposed to get more snow today.  well hell it's been a good 10
    or 12 hours, so why not? ;-}
    
    

    I know, it's been a long time since we've seen any snow here. It's been 
    almost two days and they're only talking about 1-3 inches here. 
    
    	But, I think it's still good for XC skiing and plan on some fun
    this weekend. I think being down in the trees will do a lot to avoid
    the wind chill. There's certaily now crowds or long lift lines to deal 
    with in the woods. 
    
    	Hey Deane, Come on and do so backcounrty adventure this weekend!
    It's skiing and it's cheap, even if you have to rent. You did say you
    wanted to get good at tigh tree skiing. Do it, You'll dig it!!
    
    	Keep active, don't expose skin and carry extra layers for when you
    stop.

Cyclone to developing off of East Coast and heading northeast.  Cyclone may be
close enough for several inches of snow on the Cape and parts of eastern MA.
Models continue to move cyclone out to sea.  No evidence of it slowing down
or tracking more to the west.  Will go with 2 to 4 inches in Boston area
and up to 6 or so on the Cape.  This situation is still being watched closely.
Look here for updates.


The weekend will feature VERY cold temperatures and strong northwest winds.

Yeah, I brewed too!  a weissen beer, totally inappropriate for this cold
season, but, i love the taste.

we have a new LL Bean clock in our pad that has a temp and humidity gauge
in it - it is hanging in the kitchen.  with all this cold weather, it has
been wicked dry in our pad, the meter is as low as it'll go!   but, when i
brew, i can get that thing to go up tons!  kinda fun to watch...

lemme see:

1 keg in the fridge right now, brewed about 2 wks ago;  still very young and
  quite fresh.  brown ale.  3 gals only.

1 keg aging... this one is gonna be real nice, i think, if i have the patience
  to wait.  dry-hopped in the keg w/ 1.25 oz kent goldings.  brewed 8 days
  ago.  dark, porter-like brew.  5gals.

1 5 gal batch in the primary, brewed last night...  using barvarian weast
  liquid yeast for the first time;  as of this am, no staht yet!  assuming   
  it'll take a few days as i did not make a stahter...  wheat brew.


i'll hold off for a 2 weeks or so, then go at it again...  one day 2-3 weeks
ago, i realised i had NO homebrew in the pipe, so now i just finished a 
brewing frenzy to correct this major problem!!!!!!!  i hate it when supplies
run dangerously low!

    I just came back from a quick trip home (10 minutes each way)....on the
    ride there it was snowing really pretty, then 10 minutes later, I get
    into my car to come back and freezing rain has replaced the snow.  It
    was just icing up the windshields pretty bad regardless of the
    defroster on full blast and my windshield wipers flying in a frenzy.
    I saw a few cars pull over to scrape it off.....hope it tapers off soon
    or it'll be a crazy ride home!

    Cold ...It has been dangerously cold here in Minn.  Sat. Morning
    I went out and it was -26 at 8:00 AM.  It hasn't been above 0 for the
    past 2 or 3 days and the forecast is for no change except colder.
    One man living in Roseau, Minn on the Canadian/Minn Boarder showed 
    an "unofficial" reading of -46!!! 
    
    -30 tonight I heard.  Windchills (as irrelevent as they are IMO) 
    could get down to -70.

it's pretty icy out there; i hate freezing rain - when's it gonna start
snowing again?

	Last night was the worse commute I've had in my 6 years of 
	commuting.....It was 25 degrees in Littleton and freeze 
	raining at 6:00, real hard.....but at 6:30 when I finally
	arrived in Acton (7 miles away) it was 40 degrees and just
	raining.....odd!

		

	Totally bummed over the lame rain!!!!!!!!!!

	geez, i was hoping for an all-snow january, but alas, that record
	has been broken.


i was gonna split north to ski today, but, when i saw the temp top 40F, i
decided not to for fear of ski country getting the dreaded rain too.  anyone
know for sure if they got all snow or a mix?

	gotta admit, it does look pretty nice outside right now w/ the
	snow in the trees and the sun shining bright.

    ride home yesterday sucked. shoveling this sh!t this morning rilly
    sucked. the ride in was wonderful ! I brought the camara and took a few
    pix....can't wait for the temps to drop tonite (-5 give or take a few

    Yeah, the ride into Hudson from Westboro (the back way) was incredible
    this morning. Little spots of bright sunshine coming through the dark
    clouds and bouncing off the ice and snow that had clung to the trees
    overnight. Awesome, to say the least. Too bad I can't plan my
    flashbacks - this morning woulda been perfect ;^)

It's Too Damn Cold!!

Reports are that the cold spell has now accounted for 88 deaths.  Greater
than the current toll of the LA earthquake, though not as much 
structural damage.

    Today was the 4th day since Sunday that NYC had record low temps. 
    Today's was 0 although it had climbed to a fairly balmy 5 by the time I
    left my apartment.  Normal average temp for January 20th is 37.
    
    

I like to think that, at my house this morning, it was 448 degrees K warmer
than outer space.

    its been 0 or below all week at my house when I got up, my car has
    started with a bit of trouble but today I swear it shuddered when it
    saw me coming toward it !
    
    but I have noticed that my warmup minute per gallon has improved, it was 
    a 1/4 of a tank per hour...now its about 1/8 of a tank per hour :')

i didn't realize how bad the situation was in pennsylvania until i spoke with
my mom last night; apparently they had a lot more ice on the roads then we did
up in new england, and a lot of highways were closed; on top of that, i guess
they're not quite as well equipped to deal with severe cold weather, because
they're running short on electricity; they've been having revolving blackouts
where the utility company shuts off electricity to one area for a while, then
moves the shut off portion around, to force energy conservation so that people
will have heat; the bad roads and energy situation means a lot of businesses
are shut down; my mom hasn't been to work since monday morning

    it's not just pennsylvania.  those revolving brown-outs are involving
    new jersey and I think delaware also.
    
    

    Ma Nature is doing some crazy stuff going on throughout the entire USA.  
    Today will be the first day in over 5 days that air temp will go above 
    0 in Minn.  This is the 4th longest cold spell in Minn. history.
    The govorner order the schools closed on Tuesday for the first time ever
    due to the -70 windchills being able to freeze exposed flesh in 30 seconds.

	Well, for me, I like this cold weather.  Yeah, it is damn cold, and
it hurts if you are not prepared, but if prepared, it is easy to deal with.
One thing we noticed while in England: people keep their homes a lot colder
then people in the US.  Lots of homes we went to were downright cold, in the
high 50s to low 60s, where as, many homes in the US that I've been too crank
it up to 68-74F !!  so maybe the energy drain is caused by folks trying to
maintain that 70F climate in their homes!  another case of the US pigging out
on the natural resources.  people should just wear more clothes and get 
themselves in shape.

	as a kid, i remember much colder weather then this.  i remember the
temps nearing -20F some winters, which is something i haven't seen here
since the late 70s.  

	so, as far as i'm concerned, bring on the cold!  it won't be long
until we get to the point of not being able to take off anymore clothes to
say cool and the season of heavily polluted air (that is: summer).

right now we've got our upstairs at 63 in the evening when we're home, and down
to 55 overnight and during the day if nobody's there; our frigid downstairs - i
try not to spend too much time there currently, but i think you could probably
leave milk out for a long time there and it wouldn't go bad

    well I don't know about growing up in New England, but in NY we had
    plenty of snow as kids but the temps were no where near 20 below.

    When I was a kid, I lived in Maynard, and I remember it being a much
    bigger town than it seems today.
    
    The '80s were full of wimpy winters, but I don't remember that it was
    that much colder when I was a kid ('70s) than it is now.
    
    For me, nothing compares with Indiana in January 1985.  That wind + cold
    was the most bone-chilling I've ever felt.

    Hey Dave, my last chemistry class was in 1978. My mind just retains
    useless junk.  But I don't remember how cold it was that year.

i remember getting those cold snaps that would last a week or so and the
temp, as i remember, went to nearly -20F... one particular time i recall was
around christmas, but i don't remember the year... maybe '78? '79?  pipes
froze, the whole works.

i also recall going to school during many storms;  they'd only call it off
if it was really, really bad.  it seems too that these days, every storm
is "winter storm watch" - i seem to remember that when a storm was given
this designation, it was gonna be a biggie, not some lame 1" storm.  then
again, maybe those storms never happened and i just dreamed 'em up...

where in NY did you grow up????  being further north and away from the ocean
has a big effect on temp.

from Littleton MA to Franconia NH, it is about 110 miles due north.  the
temps they have there run 10-20 less then here!  that's only 110 miles...

	Scott G, every time I see the weather report that shows the map
	of the US with temps, and I see the temps in Minn, I think of
	you. Man, that's freakin COLD!
	
	re; brewerys closing ... Miller stopped producing so employees
	could stay home. Now they're bottling water to send to LA.
	Personally, I'd prefer the water over the Miller anyway.

    I grew up in Watertown, N.Y., which is approximately 80 miles north of
    Syracuse.  School was closed a lot (at least 8 days/winter) due to
    lake-effect snow and because we were on the edge of a snow belt.  When
    I went home for Christmas this year I couldn't believe how COLD it was!
    All negative temps.  We also got ~3 feet of snow during the 5 days that
    I was home......makes me glad I live in Mass.!

    Funny, I saw that and drew the opposite conclusion, I thought you were
    rilly fried.  :-)  This month has been way below the average, and the
    ave. they showed was for '61-'9?.
    
    One of my snowfall theories is that modern plow blades throw the snow
    back further than they used to.  Therefore, the snowbanks aren't as
    high which gives the impression of less snow.  All I know (from trips
    to the compost heap) is that it's knee deep in our backyard.  Of course
    when I was a kid, all we had were snow rollers and draft horses.  They
    just packed it down, perfect for sleighs.

    I would also like to dispute the -20 temp. I was in high school then
    and do not have any recollection of -20 in Ma. However, my mother did
    call me the other day to say, amongst other things, "That's the same
    weather pattern that was happening in '78". Yes, she knows I like snow
    and was predicting a blizzard in February. Also the weather radio said
    something about all time record cold in the state, I don't think it was
    in 78 and in was only something like -24. We've been setting records
    here too. 
    	I've been setting records for me. Like this is the longest amount
    of time where the front hubs of my truck have been locked more often 
    than not. Between snow, ice, and wanting to park in the snowbank when 
    I got xc skiing, I've been in and out of 4wd for about a month. I've
    done more xc skiing this January than any January previous. I think
    I've seen more below zero days than I recall, but it certainly has been
    enpugh to change my perspective. I hear temp.s in the high teens and 
    consider it warm.

    I grew up in Ossining, NY, which is in Westchester County, about 45
    minutes north of the city.  In the western part of Westchester County,
    not near the water.  It's about 2 minutes off the Taconic (in case you
    feel like stopping by and saying hi to my folks. ;-))
    
    We're actually supposed to hit the 20's today!  That's damn near
    tropical at this point! ;-)

    Gee, thanks, but I was mostly serious.  I have seen a snow roller in
    action and we did go for frequent sleigh rides on town roads.  My
    Grandfather used to keep horses, and he had a beautiful sleigh.  He
    even had the wide leather straps with bells on them.
    
    I guess taking that as a compliment qualifies me for something.  :-)

    CXO is about a 10 minute drive to Judge Baldwins, Becketts and
    The Phantom Canyon Brewery.   The PCB isn't getting grate reviews due
    to the greenness of the brews they are serving.  Baldwins and Becketts
    both serve some delicious brew.  
    
    I'll be glad to take you to both if you twist my arm.  Ahhh, alright

Just for the record, absolute zero is -273.15 deg C or -459.67 deg F or 0 deg K
And no, I didn't have this memorized but I did have an idea about -459 F.  At
first I thought I was confusing it with Farenheit 451, the book. :-)

So, it's about 270 K right now.  Pretty hot in the universal sense.

Yeah, that fits in well with what I remember.  I was working as a night
shift operator in Cambridge at the time, living up in Marblehead.  So
I'd take the bus into Boston and then T over to Kendall Sq. and walk a 
few blocks.  Don't know about -20, but that Christmas season it was
definitely below 0 for about a week or more.  One weekend I came in
and the air conditioning had broken down in the computer room.  It was
over 100 in there.  Solved the problem by opening a window in the
office next to the computer room and putting up a couple of fans.  That
cooled things off quick ;-)  And I vividly remember thinking how much
warmer it felt when I saw one temperature/time clock that read 10 degrees
above 0.  And today it is positively balmy.

	More snow tomorrow, but they don't know how much or what
	kind (light fluffy?  heavy & wet?). 

	what's the prognosis for ski country for the next storm?  dumping?
	dusting?  i'm thinking of blowing friday off to ski;  i have my
	dunkin donuts proof-of-purchase ready to go for $10 off the Loon
	ticket!

    The only word I've heard is that this storm today will do the most
    snowing on the cape. Tomorrow nights storm is a maybe on rain so I 
    would expect it to be snow in the hills of NH. 
    
    	Robyn and I have talked about skiing, up and down, Cardigan on 
    Saturday. ANybody want to join us? the ticket is free!

    Out in the high country SOME low altitude folks suffer from cardio-pulminary
    edemia (sp).  It is basically severe altitude sickness, resulting in
    severe shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and swelling
    of the heart.  Folks affected need to be evacuated to < 5000 feet for
    relief.  
    
    On the bright side, almost all low altitude folks catch a tremendous 
    buzz while partying at high altitude. Come to think of it, I do too. 8^).

	House creeking is okay, but can cause damage, especially during
	thaw time.  The most damage is caused by foundation shifts. 


	Clutch fluid and transmission fluid was slush this morning, almost 
	couldn't shift.....shucks! and I would have had to stay home  ;-(

Yeah, my house makes those cracking/booming sounds too.  It's sort of a
'housequake', as the cold contracts the various materials in your
house and you get the "crack" when the the stress is released.
When it starts to get down to 10F and lower, we hear these quite often.
Haven't noticed any problems yet.  Hard to pin down exactly where it's
coming from too.

    If it is the system that just moved over Minnesota you should get some
    decent fluffy snow.  We got about 5+ inches from this.

    Looks Like Rain for this area (Wistah area) for today NEway. 
    Temps are supposed to push 50deg. today. Possibility of T-storms for
    the drive home. Nor-easter supposed to be heading up from FL/GA area by
    Monday - looks like we mite get dumped on early next week to make up
    for the thaw 2day/2morrow.

    Well, it kind of makes up. I can't ski as well in my office as I can in
    my back yard (maybe after this rain I can). But it will help to get
    more snow.
    
    	Remember, my mother, from a far off distant view (Seattle) has
    predicted a blizzard of '94, noting the similarity to the weather
    pattern of '78.

re: cars makin' funny noises in the cold

My 4runner's front bearings have some odd grease in them that gets a bit thick
when the temps get below about 20�F ... makes this awful crunching sound.
A poor choice for an American vehicle, if ya ask me...

So last winter, after hearing this rather ugly sound, I bring it in to the
dealer and they re-pack them with 'better grease'... okay fine, no more
problems.

So I thought.  This year they start makin' noise again.  Well I took it into
the dealer this week and they said, "oh yeah, the harmless grease noise thing.
Really, it's harmless."  So after telling them that it doesn't sound harmless,
I aske them to repack the bearings with better grease, and get a "No, we won't
re-pack them under warranty, because it's really harmless" ... yeah, well, I
never really believe anything that makes noise is harmless ... so I made them
check it out.  Well, it turns out that they've got to replace both of my front
axles and probably the bearings as well, which is going to be a WAY BIG job on
my truck -- something like 5 or so labor hours per side on a 4WD with
auto-locking hubs -- harmless my A$$!



THANK GOD FOR 6-YEAR/60,000 MILE WARRANTIES!!!!!!

    Well, my skiing trip didn't work out too well.  I drove up Thursday
    night to avoid the storm that was going to hit on Friday.  Friday I
    awoke to one of the worst ice storms I've seen.  I waited a little,
    then set out to drive from Littleton to Burke Mtn.  The driving was
    treacherous, and worsened as I made my way north.  I followed a
    tractor-trailer down I-91 and watched his trailer play catch-up with
    his cab down every hill.  I made it to Lyndonville, but just outside of
    town the roads were polished mirror smooth and impassable, and I turned
    around.
    
    I later found out that Burke was closed, as was Cannon Mtn., I-91, and
    the Franconia Notch Parkway.  The local school (St. Johnsbury Academy)
    clsoed for only its third snow day in 13 years!  Any of you who decided
    to stay home made the right choice.

    Yah bummer. I listened to the forecasts last night to figure out where 
    the snow went. From the sounds of the offshore forecast for the waters
    south of Nantucket shoal, to the Haig line and out to 1000 fathoms, it
    sounds like you'd be shoveling a couple feet off the deck if you were 
    an offshore mariner. 

    
    Pretty cold but beautiful morning here in Colorado.  Crystal clear blue
    sky, Fresh snow on the front range.  I was looking out at sunrise and it 
    couldn't have been any more beautiful.  Stppoed my car on the way in and 
    just soaked it up for a while. WOW!!

      yup, beauty sunrise this am...  bright red across the whole horizon..
      minus 5 degrees on the thermometer at 6am this morning -- 
      the bus wouldn't start either - acted like the battery was too low/dead...
      went back to bed and tried again after another hour of sleep - no go...
      time for a new battery, tune-up, brake job, new rear window. etc....
      but need to get emissions and registration first and today was the end 
      of my grace period :^0       but can't do anything about it since I 
      took Danielle's car to work...  Oh well, be crossing my fingers drivin
      around tomorrow...

    it's been snowing here, from very light to fairly heavy, since about
    9am.  good thing the weather reports last night warned us all about

Just heard on the news; it was an overturned tractor-trailer truck on rte
495 ... massive traffic backups ....

    apparently the truck that was supposed to deliver oil to my house
    yesterday was in one of those accidents...  we got a call real
    early today...  "sorry we couldn't deliver yesterday...  truck was in
    an accident...  you'll have to find someone else to come deliver..."

    'cause it's not the snow that's the problem - it's the ice.  We may
    only get say, 8 inches of snow, but then we'll get inches of sleet and
    ice on top and the roads around the city all become impassable -
    sidewalks are like pure ice - I have two friends who are now on
    crutches with broken ankles after the last storm.
    
    This one isn't so bad, at least in Manhattan.  The precipitation has
    stopped, and while the roads have a lot of snow on them, the sidewalks
    are pretty clear and nothing is that icy - at least not yet.  The other
    boroughs are worse, though.  It's still sleeting in Queens - I know La
    Guardia's been closed for hours and nothing much is getting out of
    Kennedy.  Early morning flights were cancelled in Newark, too, but I
    don't know what's happening now.  
    
    It's probably pretty bad everywhere cause the office is practically
    empty.

Get some golf cleets.  Works wonders on the ice.

The roads didn't seem too bad this morning, but I did see a pretty 
spectacular spin-out on 495 through my rearveiw mirror.  I think this
guy tried to change lanes a bit too quick.  He was in the left hand
lane, and all the lanes were for the most part, two clear tracks for 
your tires with snow everywhere else.  By the time I caugt a glimpse
of it, this car was heading at about a 45 degree angle across the whole
road.  In the right hand lane it looked like he almost gained control 
again, but must have overcompensated, and ended up doing a 360 before 
burying himself in a snow bank.  Snow spraying everywhere... Whoa.
They were lucky, as there was no one else close enough to crash into
them, and the car was stuck well enough into the snow bank as to be
totally out of the way of oncoming traffic.  Having nearly lost control
twice so far this winter, I sympathisized with the driver, but it looked
like they would get away unscathed, if a bit adrenaline charged, and
perhaps in need of a tow to get back onto the road.

Saw a 'bendah yesterday on rt. 9 in F-ham about 150' in front of me.
Car 1 was minding it's own business, puttering along at a happy 30mph in the left
lane.  Car 2 pulls out onto rt. 9 from Ken's Steak House and drives (not
slides, DRIVES) right over into the left lane that already occupied by Car 1.
...and the plastic/paint/hubcaps flew.

Observations of Car 2 showed uncleaned, snowy, fogged-up windows and a driver
not looking where he was going!  

Stupidity at its finest!  :-|

	last friday had to be the first TAY closing i've ever experienced!
	actually, i left at 2pm to head north.

Finally got a chance to get in here today...

The colorado pre-sunrise-cloud-show this morning was un-f'in'believable...

I wake up around 5:45 and you could look out over the horizon and just see some
light showing under the clouds-- by the time it was 6:30 on my way to work
there were reds/oranges/pinks/purples all through the clouds stretching 
from the horizon to the clouds directly overhead....  Quite a sight...

My daughter (who I accompany while she waits at the bus stop) stepped out the
door this morning and simply said "WoW! That's cool"

    It's definitely beautiful outside.  I just went out to get lunch in

    Now that you've let the air out of their balloon, the law of averages
    tells me there's probably another place with the same numbers in the
    opposite direction...I mean, after all, there are slightly more women
    in the general population then men, so presumably since they're not in
    Breckinridge....they're someplace else...?   Trolling for millionaires
    in Aspen and Vail?
    
    No plans - just thinking about the future...keeping abreast of trends,

i was getting a bit nervous when you guys were talking about temps in the 50s
and 60s last month

and then jc sent me a note about 9 feet in 9 days in british columbia, which
is probably too far for a day trip from breck ;^)

    Just for a little comfort back east as the snow melts into my well, 
    The extended forecast has precipitaion on Wednesday, mostly snow in 
    the interior and snow again on Friday.
